Good book with good illustrations, but lacking some of the important basics of segmented turnings such as: Choosing a turning tool, which type of turning tool works best for inside and outside cuts, methods of Flatening your rings, turning a vase type structure where you need to build up and turn the inside as you go. Section on building your own cutting sled needs more illustations and pictures...very vague. It's a good start for a subject that has little printed information up to now though.

I bought this book thinking that these designs would be easy to do,but you have to purchase other items to complete the designs, so add this into the price if you are going to buy this book, i wouldn't recommend it, unless you have the money for the items that are in the second page of this book, to complete some of the designs in the book you need waterproof body liners, A commercial stampand three inking pads, white mendi stick, liquid water colours made for the skin, a paintbrush or eyeliner brush, makeup sponges, and a lot of other tools of the trade to many to mention, so I was dissapointed with this book as I thought they would be easy to do, they look easy in the photo on amazon.co.uk but they are not as you need all sorts of stuff too much stuff to mention as you need a foam back board and other stuff also, I have learned one valuable lesson from buying this book I will never buy a book whhich hasn't been reviewed.

Thanks for reading my review

this is a rather good product. it doesn`t help that much but it will tell you the best plays to use. it also will tell you how good your team is in a number of catigories. so it is decent over all and would be worth your money to buy.

Great guide for the long run.

This book really helps if you need to learn a few plays but it doesn't give you 8-10 automatic yardage gainers. It is good for the franchise mode preparation.

Good for general info, but . . . .

lacking in ways to improve. It does a good job of breaking down all of the plays and tendencies, but that's about it. I highly suggest VG Sports online guides. Much more helpful.

This Strategy guide is not worth money. The training session on the game is more than enough. If you played the series you would have a good feel for 2002. This guide give some information on particular teams (plays), nothing that you can't figure out. To keep it short this guide has nothing new in it. No cheats, codes or any of the sort. Has team information which you can get from magazines, internet.

Mook Jong Construction Manual: Building Modern and Traditional Wooden Dummies on a Budget

It seems that the author completly missed the point. Traditional wooden dummy measures are mostly wrong, since they are based on false assumptions. Look for correct measures at the internet, for free. Woodwork techniques descriptions are fine and the mounting system description may be useful, but again, there are better ones available for free at the internet. Its "human response" dummy still has to prove its usefulness.

Cheap Man's Dummy

Review Date: 2007-01-10
Although innovative in many ways, this guide to making cheap muk jongs is not worth the price asked. If it were priced at $9.95, it might be worth a look, but at $16 plus shipping it lacks enough in content to make it not worth the more expensive price.
Having said that, it should be noted that this book explains how to make a cheap man's version of a wooden man---NOT a traditional Wing Chun dummy. Keep in mind, the title of the book is "The Mook Jong Construction Manual" not "How to Make Your Own Traditional Wing Chun Dummy." It is a guide to making an economical muk jong which mimics the Wing Chun wooden dummy, but lacks the beauty and finesse of the real thing. Contrary to what's stated, you will need some carpentry skills, tools, and an abundant amount of time before it's finished.
Finally, the details in the construction procedures and b/w pictures shown were good enough for a novice to contruct a dummy.

The arms and legs and body of the dummies that this man is making aren't even close to the traditional sizes. If you are looking for an idea or drafting plan on how to make a real traditional dummy don't buy this book.

its a great book. the human response dummy is worth the price of the book itself. being handy with tools helps but you dont have to have handyman skills. i supplemeted this with free info on the net but the book is well worth the price. i added to the human response dummy design and made two legs instead of one and in addition to having a knife fighting dummy I have a takedown dummy i use for building my wrestling skills. if you like cover it with strips of old car tires an it will last you for life. additional ideas can be found by doing a search on the net for "pell" or medieval pells which were basically knife and sword training tools. buy the book and you will save money and be able to build a great dummy.

A good place to start

Definitely a good place to start if you're looking for help on building your own dummy. It has a good foundation, but unfortunately, that's about it. The layout is pretty bad- the step will reference a picture that's about 3 pages over. Pictures are adequate (in number) and good quailty, but are B&W. The book's price is also on the high side. The last section was unique in that it illustrates how to build a 'human response' dummy- a dummy that has moving arms and life-like response. A solid 2.5 stars- a good foundation with detailed steps, but not much else. If you're looking for a beginner's guide to building book, pick this one up for reference. Supplement this book with free mook jong plans found on the internet. Don't have time to build your own dummy- check out www.mookjong.20m.com JG

Not as helpful as others in the "Dummies" series

I usually love the "Dummies" books and was hoping this one could teach me about soapmaking. It really didn't have much in the way of helpful information and I ended it returning it.

For beginners only

If you've never made a candle, or done pour-and-mold soap, this book will tell you how. It will also warn you of every concievable mishap you could encounter. In today's litigious society, I suppose that's required, but it did detract from the rest of the work, in my opinion. Then again, I was looking for pointers and updates on materials, since I hadn't made any candles since the late 1980's. In that regard, it introduced me to soy wax and a few products I did not know existed.

However, the pictures offered were not all that helpful, and the instructions very basic. Any of this information could be gotten from a decent online search. The best part of this book was the part in the back which listed a lot of websites for supplies and further information.

I found the author's style to be rather pedantic, and overly "upbeat", as if she were trying too hard to make this a fun and enjoyable book by interjecting bits of humorous commentary that didn't quite "gel".

As a series, the "for Dummies" line seems to me to be stretching a bit thin. I have quite a few of them, and the originality of the first few made learning fun. Now it simply makes it tedious, and the attempts at fun and humor are becoming tiresome.

All in all, the series overall has become what the name implies: books for beginners and dilettantes. There is nothing wrong with that, by any means. But it wasn't what I was looking for in this book.

Not worth your money

Of the many books I bought on soap making this was the worst. It had no real information in it. It skimmed on all the topics but never really explained how or why. The books written in the early 1900 on soap were more helpful than this one.

Great for melt and pour soap creations

Review Date: 2007-12-27
I did not read the sections on candle making, so this review is strictly based on the soap sections. I found this book to be one of the most helpful ones I've read (I checked out a lot from the library). True, it does not cover the cold process, but as the more simple, melt and pour method is all that I'm interested in, this book is right on target for my needs.

In addition to the color and fragrance info, it discusses stenciled soap, soap on a rope, variegated soap, embedded soap, three-dimensional soap, imprinted soap, soap balls, customized shampoo, massage oil, bath salts liquid soap and more.

I also enjoyed Chapter 19 which is devoted entirely to aromatherapy. It lets you know what a particular scent is noted for (i.e. boosting memory, fighting infections, relieving congestion, calming effect, etc.), as well as whether it is photosensitizing (increases your chance for a sunburn), a possible irritant to sensitive skin, possesses antibacterial qualities, etc.

I appologize that this is not an actual review of the book but a warning about one of the merchants that the book suggests you buy products from. I suggest that you DO NOT order soap making products from Well Naturally Products. Check out the Better Business Bureau on line first. I unfortunately failed to do that and had my credit card billed 60.00 and so far it's been a month with no products and no replys to my inquiries.
This may have been a fine company when the book was written...but I'm not so sure about that now.

Why is this book being reprinted?

I bought this book expecting to set up a homemade gun bluing operation in my home and was disappointed.

The chemical formulari were archaic and unusable (most of the chemical names used went out of vogue 50-60 years ago).

The book does not include plans to build bluing tanks of drying rooms; book only offers a brief description.

It left me, "the advanced do it yourselfer" lacking and I do not undertand why so many people rave about this book.

I do not think it should have been reprinted.

It did not help me at all

'Must read' for the gun enthusiast.

The print is very small for older eyes and the book was written many years ago. The blueing and browning techniques of today are far easier and simpler to use.
I would not recomend this book for reblueing modern firearms.

Very good info but very technical. This is more of a cookbook then a novel. It does explain everything including measurments and chemical names but is very dry reading. Please keep in mind that this title is 90 years old and the style reflects it. The fact that it is still around after so many years tells all you really need to know in regard to it's value as a reference.

Gold Panning Is Easy
Helpful Votes: 15 out of 17 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-13
The book was well written in easy to understand language. The pictures were good. However it sounded like an advertisement for Garrett Metal Detectors and products.

Mr. Labal seemed to lack detailed knowledge about dry washing in the desert and dry washers in general. Dry washers do more than "vibrate" to extract the gold. Some use air and some use a combination of both. He talked about the lack of water in the desert and how drywashing was the only way to get the gold out. There is some truth to this but there are portable sluices or wet washing machines which use recirculated water to separate the gold from the "pay dirt". Most people who dry wash take wash tubs and containers of water with them. This allows them to use a gold pan and water to separate the gold from the concentrated material dry washers produce.

The book was revised in 1992 and needs to be revised again. There have been many advances in recreational prospecting equipment in the last decade and the book needs to reflect that.

As president of my local prospecting club I would recommend this book to any beginning prospector. I learned that my gold pan can do more than I thought it could!

Little Substance - Lot's of Self Promotion
Helpful Votes: 19 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-13
It's hard to imagine this book being of much value even for a true and complete novice to prospecting. Written with blatant self promotion in mind for other Garrett products there is little if any substantive information on panning that could not be reduced to 4 or 5 pages with a couple of diagrams added. Would appear author may have been paid by the word given the tedious repetitions found throughout. Truly basic and nothing new here - spend your money elsewhere.

Hits the nail on the head

This is a comprehensive book on panning. Two things stand out for me. One, there is a by-the-numbers recipe for wet panning that is more detailed than any other book that I have read. Two, this is the only work that describes, in detail, dry panning.

This book is an excellent guide for both beginner and advanced pinewood derby enthusiast. Although compact, it offers information consistent with the discoveries I made after years of racing (and winning). Any first time racer will benefit enormously from the information found in this book. Advanced racers will also find some interesting new techniques to try. If you want to win, this book is money well spent. I wish I would have read it before building my first car!

This booklet is very small indeed, being a mere 11 pages. In it, the author covers a couple of unique, possibly effective techniques for increasing the speed of a Pinewood Derby car. He claims that tests bear out his conclusions, but does not give any indication of what the test results actually were. Overall, this book gives far too little to warrant the purchase.
