Knitwear designer Kristi Porter presents Knitting Patterns for Dummies, a worthy addition to the exemplary "For Dummies" series of guides designed to make their subject matter thoroughly accessible to beginners. Chapters address how to choose the right yarn and needles, common stitches and pattern shapes, how to measure one's gauge, read a pattern, and understand garment sizing, proper care of completed knitted creations, and much more. A handful of color plates and an assortment of black-and-white diagrams illustrate this step-by-step guide, enthusiastically recommended as a top-notch self-teaching resource.

One of the many things that I LOVE about this book is that while it is great for beginners - with many good graphics and descriptions of stitches and finishing etc - it is absolutely fantastic for those of us who aspire to get past a rigid pattern and want to try and create our own designs. It is very clearly thought out. Instructions, hints and tips aplenty. It genuinely does have something for everybody. What's more it's written in a fun and quirky way. Who'd have thought about using liquorice as a yarn ;-) As I say "I love it!"Knitting Patterns For Dummies (For Dummies (Sports & Hobbies))

I can't imagine a better manual. It is well illustrated, and written in an easy-to-follow, personable manner, as if the author is talking directly to you. It book delivers a clear, concise explanation of every step of the reloading process, discusses the different types of reloading components and their uses, impartially reviews the different reloading tools, and discusses the pros and cons of darn near everything covered.

The reloading tables are extensive and cover a wide range of powders and bullet weights. The book even includes a brief history of every cartridge covered (a plus for the curious)!

This is definitely a book that any reloader can use. Plenty of value for the money.

A Useful Reference-with one caveat

I bought this book on the strength of good reviews in Amazon. The only weakness I have found is the imprecise identification of powder manufacturers in the reloading tables. An example are the references to "No. 9" or "No. 2" powders. These are probably Accurate Arms- series powders but could be mistaken for Hodgdon or Hercules products with similar numeric designations. A preface to the tables, giving the author's abbreviation conventions, would have been useful in a reference used by both beginners and advanced handloaders. Safety and clear, non-ambiguous tables are a must. Check the Measured Density tables starting on pg 45 for powder ID's before using the Reloading Tables.

Not what I expected

only about a third of the book is telling you about and how to reload, the other two thirds is reloading data and dated to boot! I would not have bought this If I new most of it is reloading data that you can get off the Powder Mfgs website for free. the information is generalized and not to indepth.
okay for general use. but I would have spent my money elsewhere.

It covers a wide range of powders including both older and newer ones. My friends and I have found that this manual's reloading instructions are great for both the novice and more experienced reloaders. I have found that it covers calibers not found in other manuals and also lists bullets from several different manufacturers. I highly reccomend this book to other reloaders.

The Thirty-Seven Interlacements of Hira Kara Gumi by Rosalie Neilson Published by Orion's Plumage ISBN: 0966486307

This delicious little publication is what we call bibliophilistic. As such I think it is unique in the art of braiding. We have, by now, heaps of books; mainly Japanese with luxurious, gorgeous, and perhaps even garish colour-prints. But none of these can be called bibliophilistic -- whilst yours is so.

I admire the paper, the binding, the beautiful typesetting, the unusual fonts. Really everything is exceptional. And in addition (there is) the numbering and signature of the author!

An in-depth study of one braid spanning 18 years of research
Helpful Votes: 14 out of 14 total.
Review Date: 1999-11-04
As the title suggests, this is an in-depth study of one braid, the result of the author's 18 year journey of discovery. The 37 unique patterns for this braid are for only two colors; were there three, there would be over 400. This gives some idea of the design possibilities within individual kumihimo braids. Most books tempt you with ever more complicated designs, requiring more bobbins or more equipment. This book looks deeply into one eight bobbin braid structure and is never boring.

The patterns are based on the binary number system related to the starting positions of the eight braiding elements. It is astonishing to see the differences that switching just two threads in the set-up can make. On facing-pages 20 and 21, for example, there are two patterns for 6 A threads and 2 B threads. You have to look twice at the change from a pattern of small hearts to a snake-skin pattern.

This is no coffee-table book but rather a book-lovers' book. About the size of a large postcard, it has a printed pattern of stitching on the cover which suggests the spare but useful text inside. The mostly colored pages, one braid per page, are doubled, giving a folio feel to the book. Each book is numbered and signed.

I have Rosalie Neilson's Braid Runner Computer program which will scan through 14 different braid structures in the same way. But having the information for the her favorite braid beautifully condensed to hold in the hand is a pleasure indeed.

The picture would lead you to believe the book is hand-stiched Japanese syle - those "threads" are printed. This is *not* a bibliophile-quality item. The paper is standard card stock. The colors of the graphics are lurid primary and secondary colors, and the resolution is pretty low. I can' t believe I paid so much for this little pamphlet. Caveat Emptor!

This is a book for who already has some experience in Kumihimo Brainding, but your new method of mixing design patterns is innovative and easy assimilation. Undoubtedly, this book is indispensable for the enthusiasts in the technical of Kumihimo braiding. I advise that you have too the software (Braid Runner) elaborated by Rosalie for your self make elaborates own design patterns. This a some best book for kumihimo brainding in my japaneses armors construction.

Bill Sherwoinit fulfilled my goal of learning more about Denali to help me prepare for my own future climb of this awesome mountain. He covered most of the historical climbs on McKinley, but failed to recognize speed records. Maybe he can include the current speed record in a future printing. If you like reading about high country adventure, you may also like TJ Burr's "Rocky Mountain Adventure Collection". Thanks for the hard work in preparing this great book Bill.

Well written, a must for anyone who aspires to climb Denali

Sherwonit has written an interesting history of the expeditions on Denali. It is not a "page-turner" but anyone interested in climbing will appreciate the stories of successful and unsuccessful first ascents, first winter ascents and first solo ascents.

Worth reading if you enjoy Mountaineering stories.

This book reads more like a collection of short stories. The book covers the first assent of Denali, first winter accent of Denali, first solo accent of Denali, and several other interesting or note worthy asscents. If you have read and enjoyed the book "Into Thin Air" then you should enjoy this book. The book is very enjoyable reading.

Very educational with a clean line of history.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-05
This book offers an excellent detailed and informative historical perspective of Denali itself, as well as stories of expeditions, climbers, and a look to the future of the mountain. While well-written and an easy read, some of the stories lack the drama and realism due to the continuing third-person perspective. The book is more of a "factbook" rather than a collection of gripping adventures, and I recommend this read for those interested in true learning about the mountain. The reader is left with a greater appreciation of both nature and human perseverance.

The book is well written and easy to read. The instruction is well presented so the novice can uderstand and with practice will be able to advance in the game. For the intermediate on up player this book has little to offer except to learn a little about Willie which could be better spent reading a book that is devoted to Willie and not a sideline intro. depending on your skill level it is either good and well worth your time or is not worth reading. Even though i did not gain much useful information i still enjoyed the book.

He is the master after all.

This book really does not have a lot of content or instruction. If you really want to learn more about pool you'll find more in other books by less prominent pool players (ie, Robert Byrne, Phil Capelle), but he does make some very good points about the fundamentals. However, above all other things, Willie Mosconi is the greatest pool player to have ever lived and any serious pool player should read his book out of respect if nothing else.

I originally purchased this book when it was fresh off the press (at a cover price of $2.50).

Over the years, my pool game has had its ups and downs, but when I get into a 'slump', I get out "Winning Pocket Billiards" and go through the entire book as if for the first time. My game seems to undergo an immediate improvement!

I highly recommend this book for both beginners and "those that THINK they know it all"!

A must read

Mosconi's Winning pocket billiards with a copyright date of 1965 might seem a bit dated... but it's a must read. It's advice from the master! It has pictures of Mosconi hitting various shots and graphics that, while dated, are very easily understood. The graphics are done with tape on the felt... indicating direction of the object ball and the cue ball.

I have recently gotten back into the game and can sink a few... but I learned new things in this book. Definately worth it!!

This book is great for the beginner who doesn't mind being seen with a book for Dummies. The explanations are clear and there is even help for the left handed calligrapher. The illustrations help a lot. Although there are some different fonts to work with the selection has been kept to the simpler types. It is a good way to get started with the art of beautiful writing.

I just wanted to say that I recently purchased this book and am pleased with it. The book has a nice structure to it and helps walk me through everything from getting the tools of the trade, to building my confidence. For someone with my complete lack of experience, this book was exactly what I needed. Some of the other books I've found have been somewhat slim on explanation, or a poor choice for a tutorial. While it doesn't have the full suite of letter forms inside it that others may have, it seems to have the major ones I'd like to start with, and is a great way to get started. I suspect that someone with experience already would find this book somewhat too basic.

I would have given this book five out of five, were it not for the fact that I really have nothing else to compare it to. As well as the fact that the pages are not really suited to practise on as they are of a newsprint type quality. For those who wish to begin with calligraphy, I suggest using this book to get started with without reservation.

Cheers,

t.

I actually really enjoyed reading this book, it's well written (though it has a few easy-to-spot factual mistakes), and I will no doubt go through and re-read a number of sections over a few times. If anything, this book will help enculturate you as a hold 'em player; the jargon, proper etiquette, common strategies, etc. Even if you're playing no-limit, for the price this is an excellent first book. Once you're firmly hooked on hold 'em, I'd suggest Harrington on Hold 'em Expert Strategy for No Limit Tournaments, Vol. 1: Strategic Play; it's a lot longer, and more expensive, but will definitely do more to improve your game.

I gave this three stars because, for me at least, it fell well below 'Everything'.

I have two shelves full of of holdem poker books including Super System 2, Hellmuth's book, Sklansky's books, TJ Cloutier's and others. Yet, Wenzel's book, believe it or not, may be the best of the bunch.

His writing is so good, that it makes Sklansky seem like a hack. And while many beginners will pick up this book, I think intermediate players (such as myself) will get the most out of it. This is because Wenzel comments on and refutes many things that have been written in some of the other books. What's more, the book is easy to read, yet packed full of useful info.

I also like that he doesn't just go forward step by step, but interjects all kinds of useful info. throughout. Thus chapter one is just as valuable as the final chapter. And again, the range of material that he covers is mind boggling.

If you want a book that "tells it like it is," rather than just giving you a bunch of theory, "The Everything Texas Hold'em Book" is your baby. And because it's an "Everything" book, it will probably be overlooked by most poker players as being too basic, but this is a good thing, as it will give those of us who do read it a significant advantage over them.

Very good except for one thing.

I really liked this book and was pleasantly surprised by it. It is not one of those extremely basic beginner type books that does little more than explain the rules of the game and tells you to play tightly. It's quite a bit more advanced than that and I found myself agreeing with most things the author had to say. My only problem with the book and the reason I didn't give it five stars is his treatment of internet poker. He more or less claims it is rigged and is strongly against it. He also makes silly claims like it is impossible to play more than one table at a time well etc. Obviously he is more of a live game type of guy and that is fair enough but he is wrong about internet poker. The hundreds of internet millionaires are proof of that. I myself have made a substantial amount of money playing internet poker.

That gripe aside, this is a very good book and well worth a read.

This is a good book to get you started on the basics like sharpening, selecting bamboo, preparing and making equipment. What he says in the book is very much enhanced by his 3 DVD set, which I purchased off of ebay. If you can get the DVDs it will really help you the book should come with the DVDs in my opinion. It isnt a very glamorous book in terms of photos, but there are enough pictures to give you a good basic idea of what you need to do. There are many tapers for rods in the appendix, which is nice to have.

This is a good reference book, but should not be your sole source of information. Too much is left out that is critical to building a first rod. For example, a lot of details are missing with regards to what you need to do with the blank once it comes out of the glue binder. WHat about scraping, filing, sanding and keeping those sharp edges? The book could also do with better organization.

I purchased this item for my 11 year old daughter, who is a big Harry Potter fan and she is really enjoying it. She loves building the castle (although we are not yet finished) Things to note about the toy, there are a LOT of really tiny pieces so you need a good size space to work on, the instructions require you to flip back and forth between pages which is cumbersome and sometimes they are not easy for an 11 year old to follow without help. Younger kids may need help building it depending on how good they are with instructions, but it will defintely keep an 11-13 yr old busy for a while, the castles can take hours to build depending on how fast you work and how complicated you want it. It also makes a great family time activity as everybody can build parts of it at the same time. Kids who love building will like this toy, even if they aren't Harry Potter fans. Overall, I recommend the toy as a good value and lots of fun.

Very good book, easy to use. The best so far that explains how the D40 features work, especially for a beginner. I tried a couple of other books,I am new to the world of slr cameras and have not understood enough to venture away from the auto setting!! The other books I bought was supposed to be for beginners, but I had to look up every word to figure out what they were trying to tell me.
This author, actually goes through the menus and each function very carefully and in PLAIN language. Everything I wanted to know was in this book, even some things that I didn't know I needed to know.
I highly recommend this book if you are going from digital point aand shoot to slr cameras. The book tells you all about the Nikon D40, This is an AWESOME camera!!!!
