Best comprehensive reference on texas hold em!Review Date: 2007-05-31
There are other books that cover some of these aspects of play, but I have found no other book that describes them in a manner that is this easy to understand while having plenty of detail at the same time.
This is definitely one of the first poker books that you should read, and I am certain that you will find this to be a useful reference. I can see this as being a resource that I will refer to often as I continue to learn the game and build my experience.

Hilarious!Review Date: 2008-04-18
We decided to buy it for our nephew who is turning 16. He'll get a kick out of it and have fun doing a bunch of the ideas in the book. I'm sure my husband will get him started and make sure he does a few things right away.
This is a great gift for anyone who is young and heart and has a great sense of humor! I'm also thinking about getting it for my brother on his next birthday (he'll be 34), but I'm not sure he needs it since he is immature enough.
I would have to say that this gift is best for the boys, but some girls might like it, too. I think it is funny, but not nearly as much as my husband. The girlfriend of our friend's brother hated the book, but she didn't have much of a sense of humor.

If you want to know Ruby this is the book for you.Review Date: 2007-11-12
If you have seen a few games and are lost, this is the book you want to get. It explains everything from the smallest detail to the history of the world cup. If you don't know the difference between a ruck and a maul or you have no idea what a pitch or a try is then buy this book. Everything is explained in a simple and easy to understand manner.
But then isn't that how all "for dummies" books are written? Well this one is written by people who play and know the game and have an idea how hard it can be for an American on the outside looking in to grasp the game.
I highly recommend this book for both those new to the game and those that have been just using Rugby as an excuse to pop down to the pub for a few pints.

I want to grow a giant pumpkin!Review Date: 2008-06-27

All its promised to be...and moreReview Date: 2007-12-20
The author did an excellent job researching all aspects of growing giant pumpkins. I found myself with numerous questions as I read the book and inevitably the author answered every question I had. The author writes for those having no prior knowledge of pumpkin growing - but would also likely interest those who were knowledgeable in the field. She has a creative use of vocabulary and story telling. I was sorry to see the book come to an end, but also very content with the ending. This book is well worth the reader's investment.
A Delightful Journey...Review Date: 2007-10-25
Mr. President meets The Great PumpkinReview Date: 2008-01-26
Susan Warren is a gardener. She googled a personal gardening question one day, and incidentally found guys that were obsessed with creating monster pumpkins. She wrote a front page story about them for the "Wall Street Journal", and this book grew out of that article.
Warren describes the pumpkins, of course, but her book is much more about those obsessed guys. She grew a giant pumpkin (240 pounds) as a research project, but both she and her architect husband "got sucked in ... this is a very dangerous book. It sucks in people who like a challenge."
She is amazed at the diversity of growers: airline pilots, engineers, Wall Street analysts, bankers, truck drivers, country club managers and "your mom could be a giant pumpkin grower." They live in a number of countries: the US, England, Germany, Australia, and elsewhere. She believes they are all overachievers, the kind of people who work all day and then come home and put in a few more hours in the garden.
Warren writes that the giant pumpkin competition started out with a lot of secrecy involved; there was very little sharing. The Internet changed that. Growers soon realized they couldn't hold secrets, and 15 new world records have been set in the last 18 years. [The current record is 1,689 pounds set by Joe Jutras in Rhode Island who is mentioned in the book, but who set the record after the book was released.] The philosophy is now: "I'm going to beat you. I want to beat you at your best. So here, let me help you."
Bill Clinton understands the challenges {apparently an expert on giant Arkansas watermelons): "If you give it too much water and the skin breaks, you're eliminated. And if you give it too little, somebody else beats you because they've got a bigger melon or a bigger pumpkin. So like at the end, under very tense circumstances, there are these constant judgment calls. It's kind of like being President."
The growers feel a moment of mutual elation when a new record is set, according to Warren. That moment represents many years of hard work, many years of disappointment, many years of learning and education. A key point of the education is that these fruits are no longer pure pumpkins, but the result of cross breeding with other heavy cousins like squash. The goal is to be heavy -- weight is the only objective measurement of size. A smaller pumpkin can weigh more than a larger one, so the growers strive to increase density. They don't look so much like pumpkins anymore; Warren writes that they resemble "deflated Thanksgiving Day parade floats."
She says that the growers don't care about looks, they care about 40 to 50 pound a day weight gains during the peak growth period. That rate will put a great deal of strain on the pumpkin which can lead to the disaster of split skin and disqualification that Clinton spoke of. Growers report that they can hear the pumpkins growing, a creaking and groaning, especially at night, much like the sounds of corn growing back in Wisconsin many years ago.
Several other details caught my attention:
- Despite their enhanced density, these giants will float.
- They can be hollowed out and raced in Pumpkin Regattas.
- Growers thump them vigorously to judge density.
- Getting rid of gophers and other varmits provide some of the most intense moments; a lost bud can severely weaken a pumpkin vine. ("You'll still get a pumpkin, but you want a champion.")
- All growers become soil scientists, and now rely primarily on organic fertilizers.
There is a bit of pathos in this book: Ron Wallace, the featured grower, loses one of his pumpkins: "Ron's disappointment was sharp and deep and all too familiar. He cracked the rotting skin open in hopes of recovering some seeds. But the seeds swimming in a fetid pool of neon-orange slime were limp and lifeless. Disgusted, he left the broken shards of giant pumpkin lying in the grass next to the garden, an organic monument to disappointment."
As the extract shows, Warren is particularly good at describing the depth and complexity of the obsession these competitors. If that human element appeals to you, you'll enjoy this book.

LA CREME DE LA CREME OF 007 BOOKSReview Date: 2008-06-12
Well, the JAMES BOND ENCYCLOPEDIA certainly doesn't dissappoint, hundreds of terrific pictures organized by category (movie, vehicles, girls, villains, etc.) include even the most oscure of entries. While a dream come true for aficionados, it's definetly bound to please casual Bond fans also (and who isn't ?)
Excellent Bond Review Date: 2008-01-09
good information/ hard layoutReview Date: 2008-02-15
It is full of information with plenty of accompanying pictures, and is divided up by subjects (i.e. Bond Villians, Bond Women, Weapons, Equipment etc.). For myself, since that is also part of the Bond world, I wish it had had a section on Bond bloopers (deliberate or otherwise) which occur in the films.
I did notice that occasionally the pictures did not match the captions listed for them (in "The Movies" chapter especially) in that a photograph would be shown, but the caption did not relate to the designated picture.
Also, in the sidebar section of that chapter where different persons connected with the production side of the movies would be listed along with their professional biographies, sometimes the print was hard to read bacause of the background color it was placed on.
Overall, I would recommend this book.
A must for the Bond fanReview Date: 2008-01-24
A pleasure to read.
A COOL BLAST OF BOND Review Date: 2008-04-14
I've read a lot of books from DK on popular films and while they are always very well done, they sometimes can be a bit light on material. No so with this book. This book contains over 300 pages filled with information that will test even the most knowledgeable of Bond fans. It is bountifully illustrated with over 2000 photographs and images and traces the Bond history right up to the most recent film, Casino Royale.
As the title suggests it is an encyclopedia but rather than just list its hundreds of entries in alphabetical order it lists them alphabetically by subject. The subjects include: The Bond Style, The Role of Bond, Bond Villains, Bond Women, Supporting Cast, Vehicles, Weapons & Equipment, and the Movies. A comprehensive index finishes things off.
The role of Bond covers the six actors who have portrayed Bond with two pages of biographical information on each actor and a list of the Bond films they starred in. Next up is the section on Bond Villains. This section covers Bond villains from the criminal masterminds Blofeld, Hugo Drax, and Goldfinger; crime lords like Frank Sanchez; muscled thugs Jaws, Odd Job, Mr. Kil, and Tee Hee; and dangerous females May Day, Elekta King, and Bambi & Thumper. The encyclopedia gives the film(s) they appeared in, their current status, characteristics, the actor who portrayed them, and a synopsis of their roles in the films.
No book on Bond would be complete without looking at the dozens of Bond Women played by some of the most beautiful actresses in the world: Terri Hatcher, Ursula Andress, Lana Wood, Eva Green, and Halle Berry. The section on supporting cast members covers all the other major and minor characters in the Bond films from Q to Miss Moneypenny. Each Aston Martin that Bond drove is featured in the section on vehicles along with some of the more extraordinary vehicles like the Bath-O-Sub from Diamonds are Forever and the Dragon Tank from Dr. No. And of course all of Bonds secret weapons and gadgets are detailed in the Weapons section.
The last fifty pages or so of the book covers each bond film in chronological order with a listing of cast and crew credits but rather than provide a synopsis of films you've probably seen numerous times the book instead provides anecdotes on the making of the films with all manner of interesting production notes.
This is a book that is perfect for the die-hard or casual James Bond fan.

Locating Fishing Spots in the CarolinasReview Date: 2007-02-15
Lots of Great InformationReview Date: 2006-08-12
It's pretty cool when the author mentions pier owners, bait and tackle owners, etc. by name. This book is really a must read for folks wanting to fish the Carolina coast!
Highly recommended.
Finally a specific fishing book!Review Date: 2006-01-14
The book reads like a conversation with and old fisherman on a pier or in a tackle shop. The author covers all the bases like where to shop, what to buy, how to rig it up, where to go, how to cast, where to cast, how to set the hook, where to put the catch, how to cook it, etc. This is not the modern "magazine article" style of book, it's an old school how to catch fish book.
Something to consider...
The book is mostly text and some basic B/W images and illustrations. You must be prepared to do some reading before you go fishing. This is not a skim fast and go fishing today book.
If you live in the area or plan to visit, it is a great resource.

A Toy In Disguise!!!Review Date: 2007-09-07
Do you wish you could draw? Not necessarily to be an 'Artiste' or whatever, but just for fun? Do you look at all kinds of art~from greetings cards to school kids' comics to the art in world famous galleries and think 'I wish I could do that' [please say 'yes' here otherwise I'll get paranoid]? Me too. Well, here's the answer!!
Sure other art teaching type books probably have their merits, but none can hold a candle to this one.
It's a square, a little smaller than A4 size, ringbound, and comes with 2 watercolor pencils (I can't tell you how fun these are!) and a drawing pen-all of artist quality.
Lessons and directions are mostly kept to the periphery leaving big blank spaces for you-the budding new artist, to fill in, add to or enhance some of the unfinished sketches in there-THAT'S RIGHT! YOU DRAW IN THE BOOK-no other ingredients needed!! (So this isn't really suitable for a library or something to share between kids; it's totally personal and that's actually part of the charm.)
FUN is the key ingredient to any successful learning and this is what we have here in spades, and you learn proper techniques too-it's not just about doodling, and the encouraging, esteem building way it's written is just buoying!
And here's another bonus; there's no upper age limit, so as long as you're 8+, you're set; I'll be 33 soonish and I LOVE THIS!!!!
So get this for yourself or for anyone who wants to draw and have a blast!! It's 104 pages of absolute brilliance!!
And may I say a big heartfelt thank you to all the people behind it; I used to be embarrassed about my drawings-never feeling like I measured up, but you guys have made me feel great about it-turns out I actually can draw!!!
Excellent and fun! A winner...Review Date: 2003-12-20
There is instuction in the book but it's subtle and never says *a sky should look like this and a dog like this*. It's more about the joy of drawing and just getting started than it is about how to draw anything in a line by line way. A great thing for kids as they get to develope their own style.
That isn't to say there aren't lessons to be learned (perspective, shading, faces...showing movement, etc) The book is set up with small amounts of text and drawings (almost doodles) on the pages with the expectation that you will draw your own designs on the blank spaces. One thing I just love is that the pictures they included as examples are very sketchy and loose... simple and quickly drawn. Nothing that anyone would look at and say "I could never do that!" about. I think that is wonderful. I have seen too many how to draw books where the results look nothing short of professional and when I buy them for my son he just looks at them and thinks he could never duplicate the result. Its intimidating and he won't even try.
with this book... The examples, looking more like doodles, are very inviting and non-threatening. Almost inviting you to add your own. Perfect!
The text is helpful and humorous. Some pages there is very little and others...there is more but it's all friendly and conversational. This is a real winner!

Young kids might need helpReview Date: 2003-03-15
However I would not give it to yopung children for two reasons. Reason number one is that children younger than ten express themselves through drawing. The way they draw a tree, for example, tells us a lot about their personality. No instruction should be given before age 8. Reason number two is the instructions are a bit difficult for kids up to third grade.
I suggest teacher should use this book as an art connection inside a Roald Dahl author study.
