Can Heidegger's Thinking Be Aligned With Atheism or Theism?
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-10
In this essay, the relationship of Heidegger's thought on Being to the theological issue of the existence of God is explored. In _Being and Time_, Heidegger lays the foundations for metaphysical thinking (which also concerns the existence of God). But, first he must show that metaphysics is indeed possible, following Kant. When asking "Why is there something rather than nothing?" (as he does in his _Introduction to Metaphysics_), Heidegger does not intend this to be answered with "God", as is done in medieval philosophy, i.e. he does not intend to search for the divine ground of Being. Rather, "His 'why' asks for the deepest and most fundamental ground of Being; for this reason the questioning does not begin with a given aggregate of beings and asks about a higher kind of being which accounts for their totality. (18, this book)" After concerning itself with the foundations for metaphysics, the book turns to Heidegger's "overcoming of metaphysics" in his thinking. The book deals with this overcoming, and with Heidegger's overcoming of theology. Finally, the book looks at Heidegger's thought after his "Kehre" (turning)and deals with the relationship between the poet (viz. Holderlin) and the thinker (viz. Heidegger). In conclusion, the author notes that Heidegger has made no decision on God. He writes, "Heidegger does not feel himself qualified; he experiences Beings as holy . . . but he has not been claimed by the god, i.e. he has not experienced god. (119, this book)"

Good for all ages

This inspiring and fun-to-read book profiles 23 Ohioans who have exhibited outstanding character and courage. Some are quite famous, others not at all. Among the famous are the Wright Brothers, Tecumseh, Harriett Beecher Stowe, Toni Morrison, and Jesse Owens. Among the not-so-famous, but should be, are Jacob Parrott, Mary Ann Bickerdyke and Janarius MacGahan.

I put this book at the top of my Christmas giving list for these reasons: 1. All the stories make you appreciate the sacrifices and character of the individuals profiled ("Could I ever be that brave?"). 2. All the stories are well-researched. I thought I knew about all there was interesting to know about some of these Ohioans, but the book taught me otherwise. 3. It's written in story-telling fashion, making for a good read-aloud book for the family and an interesting read for the junior and senior high school set. 4. It well represents the diverse interests and ethnic backgrounds of Ohioans.

Great Modern Poetry

David Bergman's "Heroic Measures" contains beautiful poems about the nature of life and living, that are universal between straight and gay audiences alike. It is poetry without pretension, that accepts itself easily and flows when read aloud. It does not try to outdo itself with meaningless metaphor and aggravating allusion, and instead honestly tells stories. This collection has such a varied repertoire of topics, too, from the much-praised AIDS poetry, to the nature of travel and family, with some especially meaningful poetry about fathers. With their unexpected rhyme, range of subjects, and sheer honesty, I found these poems to be some of the most enjoyable modern poetry I've read in a great while.

This map is great for anyone who is tired of seeing the same old things when treveling. With this map you can now take a side trip to see bigfoot's stamping grounds or where a ufo landed. As an old english playwright said "there is more to life then is dreamed of in your phillosophy"(or something like that). This map helps you find it in Ohio!

Incredible story of one week in the life of an autistic boy
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-24
This most wonderful book should be read by anyone and everyone who has ever been in contact with autism. Whether it's family or acquaintances, you will get so much out of this book.

The effect that an eight-year old boy has on his family during his summer vacation is heart-breaking, joyous, sometimes funny, and eye-opening.

Excellently written, reads very easily. Makes you want to rush out, buy more copies and distribute them to all of your friends (because one coopy is just not enough).

An amazing book. Read it.
