This is the story of the Sherwin family as actually recorded in letters to each other. If you want to get a feeling for what life was like for poor but well educated people between 1848 and 1880 this is the book for you. No real commentary is given just the actual translation from long hand of over 300 letters. There are five books in this series. This is the first one. I hope people who own these will put them up forsale on amazon so that others may enjoy them.

All too often the Bushmen (otherwise known as the San) have been portrayed in school textbooks and in the minds of the general public as "living fossils" whose ways of life have remained the same throughout the ages. Associate-Professor Smith et al. demolish the myth and present a vivid picture of Bushmen social and economic dynamics down through the ages, as well as the interaction with incoming cultural groupings and the effects thereof. Anyone who is interested in the remarkable history, both past and contemporary, of the Bushmen will find this book an invaluable addition to their library.

A thorough treatise of all species known to occur in Ohio. This book should be of interest to anyone interested in butterflies and skippers throughout the region. The section on the history of butterfly research in Ohio is rich and without equal. Kudos to the authors and the Ohio Biological Survey for presenting such an accurate and detailed publication that is useful to everyone with an interest in butterflies!

This book is very good and is a wonderful overview of the Caborn-Welborn peoples. I am, at the time of this review, working on a publication about the dental remains and pathologies of the Caborn-Welborn site of Mann. It is located near the outskirts of the culture area, but retains the same cultural styles and other items. This book give a great overview of what defines the Caborn-Welborn peoples and focuses on how they formed out of the antecedent Angel chiefdom. It also speaks a lot on the pottery. Unfortunately, it does not review the bioarchaeological remains of these peoples.

A true story of showboat life

This is a must reading for people who were around in the 20s, 30s 40s and 50s and anywhere near the Ohio river. It's a true to life story of the TJ Reynolds family who brought old time showboat entertainment to thousands of people along the river. I found it to be a fascinating glimpse of life aboard showboats and the trials and tribulations of this Reynolds family. What's interesting is that after reading the book, one can actually experience seeing a play on the last showboat, Reynold's Majestic, even today in Cincinnati, Ohio.

This book concerns itself with the Adena people the mound builders of the Ohio Valley in America who lived sometime between 1000 and 200 BC The book was published by the Carnegie Museum in 1963. For a book of its time it is liberally illustrated with line drawings and black and white photographs. Good analysis technical analysis of the sites. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this culture some of the art work is truly stunning and includes some of the pieces which are worked in copper (!).
Unfortunately not mentioned in the text is the work of Marshall Homes who was a true pioneer in this field.
I am sure there may be other works on Adena more up to date (although I am not familiar with them) but this is a brilliant and charming volume.
For anyone interested in the archeology of North America it is a must read.

This book is very inspiring. Buckeye women are strong and intelligent women who didn't let prejudice stop them from achieving their goals. They fought for what they believed in. And some of the Buckeye women have moved onto the national platform ~~ bringing Ohio into the forefront of history. It's a fascinating read ~~ very insightful and for those who don't care for long descriptives, this book is brief and straight to the point. I didn't feel like they've left anything out ~~ in fact, this book has piqued my interest in Ohioans and read more on Ohio history. It's a fascinating look into time. It also makes me very thankful that my foremothers fought to give me better opportunities in life ~~ it's a book that everyone should read.
