Importance of the Aftermath in History
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2007-05-17
Dr. Robert P. Forbes is no stranger to students of the antebellum era. His previous articles have been noted for their clear readable style and scholarship. Dr. Forbes states the book took a long time to come into being as a finished work. The result shows a well thought out examination and interpretation which makes the wait worthwhile. His colleagues, experts in the field of antebellum history, state they "learned a great deal from the work." The real value of this work is in its examination not only of the well known history of the Missouri Compromise itself --the formulation and passage of the legislation--but the even more important aspects of the effect of this compromise and the devastating result of its being revoked. The book has enough meat in it to satisfy the most discerning scholar and a facile style to satisfy the general reader. This is a volume that belongs in the library of every student of history, of politics, social movement, and ultimtely the disolution of the Union. Congratulations to Robert Forbes for a great gift to us.

Tracy Crudup's new book was just excellent. What a grand story and what a poetic charm she has in her descriptions. I got it in the mail yesterday and started reading it. I couldn't put it down until I was done with it at 12:30. This one will probably be her best one.

I can't remember when I have enjoyed a book so much. I absolutely could not put it down until I had read it all. I want to find a man like Garrett...lol Her writing is just excellent and I find it hard to believe that she will ever top this one. I think this one would make a great movie!

In this must-have reference book for the economic historian, McCusker compiles an impressive amount of information on the major European currencies, units of account and relative values, and presents it a clear and straightforward fashion. Conversion tables, market values and stock exchange quotes make it extremely easy to obtain the information as needed. If a number or a series is all you want, you can go in and out of this book in seconds, taking with you everything you need. In my personal experience, I managed to convert prices in florins per Dutch pound to pence per British pound between 1690 and 1720 in a matter of minutes (and it involves six different weight, monetary and accounting conversions!). But the masterful accounts that accompany each chapter make it worth spending much more time on it.

Too long and too muddled
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 6 total.

Brown tries to delve into abolitionists' motives. The result is an overly long book full of equivocations. It's a hodge-podge, wherein on one page, he questions the abolitionists' sincerity because they objected to slavery on religious grounds and on another page he admits that they were dedicated to abolition as an end in itself. And so it goes on and on and on....very slowly and with no apparent end, or resolution, in sight.

Moral Capital Indeed; but not in the United States

This is a great attempt to understand how the British turned against the enslavement of Africans. It is sad to note that it took a bloody Civil War, the worse conflict involving Americans, to end slavery on these shores.

Subtitled "The Limits of Biological Control," an amazing book on this subject matter and way ahead of its time.

A memorable, nostalgic, and highly recommended narrative
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2003-04-14
Mountain Born, Mountain Molded by Larry G. Morgan is a wryly written personal memoir of growing up in the Nantahala region of western North Carolina from 1945-1955 as the fifth in a family of ten children. Childhood memories, simple games kids played long before popular culture became overloaded with atrociously [spendy] collectible toys, and the refreshing wonder of the great outdoors are all recalled in this memorable, nostalgic, and highly recommended narrative.
