An informative, easy read

This is a comprehensive and entertaining history of the development of commercial fishing in the southeast. It is also very informative with regard to the momentum coastal development has, and which is threatening the source of its development in the first place--fishing. As multiple use zones, our coastal communities now are the intersections of a variety of conflicting interests. This is one of the few books that chronicles how this has happened, and the incredible ability of fishermen to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.

When I was researching my thesis at Vanderbilt on O'Connor, Thomas Daniel Young, my advisor, recommended this book as the best book on O'Connor, and I can think of no better authority than Dr. Young. It was invaluable to my understanding of her work.

What a wonderful book by Galen Reuther! She has written the book I have always wanted to write. The archival pictures are a treat and speak thousands of words. Born and raised in Hendersonville I was pleasantly surprised to see a picture of our father Charles M. Elliott - page 17 2nd row far right - as a member of the Bearcats in 1930. Family members were not aware of the picture. Was even more surprised to see a picture of myself on page 90 in the first Hendersonville Little Theatre production of Bus Stop. I played the role of the bus driver. It is creatively written by a very talented lady and I thank her for a nostalgic re-visit to a place always special in my heart. Phillip Elliott

This book is a true treasure for those researching their family history and wanting to know about the history of blacks in North Carolina from articles written by blacks. This work is a must read. It contains information detailing agricultural, religious and education history, among other subjects. It culminates with stories about hundreds of families from North Carolina as family members recount their history based on their memories and stories told and passed down from their ancestors. I've recommended it to many of my family members as well as friends of all races.

This is one book you will not be able to put down! If you enjoyed the first two books in the Blue Ridge Legacy series, you'll love this one. It's definitely the best of the three. I was sorry to finish it, knowing that I wouldn't have the chance to follow the characters any farther. Their lives had become real to me.

This without a doubt is the best researched book on life in appplachia for a fiction book. On top of that it is very good reading material. It's one of those books that tells a story that might just as well have been true. Top notch.

Artistic, insightful and brilliant. An amazing first hand account of the bombing!
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.

I must admit 4 1/2 stars would be most appropriate.
In "Hiroshima Diary," Dr. Michihiko Hachiya recounts his experience as both a victim of the atomic bomb and a first-responder of aid.
Hachiya's account graphically depicts the confusing, terrible weeks that followed the atomic attack on Hiroshima. His matter-of -fact interpretation revels how little modern portrayals of the bombing compare with reality.
The destruction wrought upon the Japanese people at Hiroshima is not to be underestimated, however, Hachiya bares facts that today seem unbelievable in light of the vast devastation.
For all his suffering and all he has been witness to, Hachiya demonstrates little resentment towards the Americans who completely altered his way of life.
A profound book that is both troubling in its imagery and beautiful in its language. No less poignant today than so many years ago.
