This is the quiet, intense story of an adolescent girl who struggles to gain autonomy in an oppressive family and narrow-minded town north of the arctic circle in Norway. The story (originally published in 1926) is set in the narrow confines of the bourgeoisie at the end of the nineteenth century, and the desperation of the main character, Alberte, is palpable. Cora Sandel (pseudonym for Sara Fabricius, 1880-1974) is considered to be one of the greatest Scandinavian novelists of the twentieth century, but is virtually unknown abroad. Despite the seriousness of the novel, it manages to delight most readers because of the brilliance of Sandel's prose. A must read for folks who love twentieth century women writers.

Alice's Birthday Pig is a chapter book for young readers ages 7-10 about a girl who longs for a pet of her very own, and who gets frustrated over her inability to properly pronounce the world "animal". Her brother teases her by comparing the way she talks to that of their baby sister Rosie, which is completely unfair since Rosie is only three! Alice's dream of having a pet pig eventually comes to pass in a surprising way - when she becomes the proud owner and responsible caretaker of a guinea pig! A handful of charming black-and-white illustrations enhance this upbeat, easy-to-read story.

While this book is deemed appropriate for ages 4-8, our 14 month old daughter quickly chose "All Year Long" by Lois Rock, as her favorite book. The rhyming pattern, colorful changing seasons, and simple content continues to appeal to her after 4 months of having it read to her every night!

The Private House hits its stride

Ombreux' "One Week in the Private House" was fairly charming and fast-paced, but rather too formulaic in terms of its innumberable nasty bits-- there just wasn't much of a frisson of excitement in the characters' submission or "humiliation". Fortunately, "Amanda in the Private House" takes Ombreux' delectable style to the next level. Reserved young Amanda wants nothing less than to be embarrased by being caught in compromising situations-- or so she tells herself. Alas, kinky people in high places have taken a shine to her, and suddenly her life is full of pleasantly compromising situations. Ombreux is, thankfully, a very gallant sort of erotic writer, who clearly is charmed by his female protagonists and assures them a happy life where they can be free to submit. And his gift for erotic invention really blossoms in this tale. Many wonderful scenarios draw out in delicious detail. Top-notch.

How often we're grasping at straws, when we should be gripping the pages of a book written by an expert, someone who cares, someone who is not merely looking to reap the monetary rewards of royalties, nor the roar of the crowd of recognition and fame.
Such was the case with Dr.Claire Weekes' "Agoraphobia" -- a book which literally transformed my life after a terrifying and debilitating personal trauma. Suddenly, I had found myself thrust into a world of fear. The cyclical events of fight or flight ... could this keep happening again and again? Who would or could help me to overcome the effects of this experience? Noone could know what I was feeling, could they? How was I to spend the rest of my life living with fear all about me when I had so much to do?
I found myself browsing the "How to" book section and there it was... "a simple treatment for agorphobia." Was that what this was? I thought I was losing my mind. However, as I eagerly thumbed through the pages, I found other stories like mine. There *was* a cure, and it *was* simple enough.
After following Dr. Claire Weekes' suggestions, learning to go with the "flow" instead of fighting it. Learning to "accept" ... I empowered myself with the strength to find myself again. I left the fear behind me after nearly two years of constant suffering.
This was all accomplished within the pages of this wonderful book. Dr. Weekes, the Australian physician who was the pioneer in the area of agoraphobia, is no longer with us, but wherever she is, I hope she knows how many people are grateful to her for returning their lives to them.
I see this book is listed at Amazon.com as "hard to find." Well, don't give up trying to find it because this book will transform your life like it did mine.
Thank you, Dr. Weekes.
