Venceremos !Review Date: 2007-06-01
This is a must-read for everyone, Chilean and non-Chilean alike.
The story told within these pages speak to all humanity and "civil"ization regardless of nationality.
Victor's story and that of the Popular Unity and Nueva Cancion movement must be told. The beauty and tragedy go hand-in-hand in this story of love, passion and sadness.
Joan Jara writes with a sincerity and a frankness that trancends even honesty. As a young Chilean-American, Joan's words resonate with stories that my parents have told me over the years. If you are interested in the history of Latin America, specifically Chile, or just looking for a great book to read, give this one a chance. You will not regret it.
! Victor Jara Presente ! Muchas gracias Joan !

Closing the GapReview Date: 2004-02-19
As they say about sickness, the body must heal itself. Medicine can only assist it in doing the work. So is it with thinking. We don't need to be told what to think, we need to be instructed on how to open doors to new ways of looking at things we have looked at for so long, we no longer see.
This remarkable Press has some good news we badly need in these times. It's possible!

1792-1793Review Date: 2006-10-23
In this installment, Ross and Francis's partnership in the Wheal Leisure mining operation is threatened when the backing of key members of the Cornish business community begins to be inexplicably withdrawn. It soon becomes apparent that Poldark's hated foe, George Warleggan, rapidly becoming the wealthiest man in Cornwall, is pulling strings, intent on ruining the Poldarks. In addition, the results of Dr. Enys relationship with the aristocratic Caroline Penvenan drives the doctor to drastic actions, and even the marriage of two such similar souls as Demelza and Ross founders.
This is a novel in which perhaps the very deepest and most vital events in the first half of the entire series come to pass, and the one in which English society of late-Georgian times is most creatively explored, frequently even insofar as Graham seems to step away from his central characters and take asides that could only be termed "sociological." Warleggan features much financial battling, showcases Ross's nature as a gambler, and sees the death of a character who had seemed so central to the plotlines of all other books as to be indispensable, proving that in the Poldark novels nothing may ever with certainty be predicted. In Warleggan, sexual passions long buried for dead explode, disaster looms throughout the story, the forces of malignity seem prepared to achieve absolute and utter triumph, and never before have the Poldark fortunes looked so drear as near this novel's end...and then a twist comes into the plot and the novel ends in a cliffhanger that must have tormented original readers forced to wait TWENTY YEARS for Graham to release his next Poldark installment...
POLDARK VS. WARLEGGAN: WHEN TEMPESTS ROARReview Date: 2004-07-20
The growing power and influence of Warleggan throughout the novel is highlighted, as are the lives of Ross & Demelza, Francis & Elizabeth Poldark, Dr. Dwight Enys (a close and trusted friend of Ross, whose radical approach to practicing medicine has made him both loved and scorned throughout the district), and Caroline Penwenen. Ross and Demelza, in particular, experience some struggles that put their marriage to the test. There are also some surprising, relationships which take root among some of the other main characters, which are described in rich and colorful detail.
Once again, Winston Graham has written a novel that grips and holds the reader throughout, and ends as a cliffhanger. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

A rollocking good tale that tenderly delivers a look inside the lives of the homeless in England.Review Date: 2008-05-27
Dennis Apperly's writing had me laughing and crying with his tender characterizations.
I finished the book in three days.....when I had to put it down I couldn't wait to pick it up again!
I'm looking forward to the next one.
Wasteground - No Sentimentality HereReview Date: 2008-05-27
I read the entire book in one day -- I just couldn't put it down. I know that most homelessness is a result of addiction made worse by Thatcher's insistence to close halfway houses, like her pal Ron Reagan, despite the protestations and warnings from Andrew Cuomo, serving in HUD (Housing and Urban Development) and I always buy Big News when I am in London... I just didn't see the faces behind the dirt and the despair.
Cringe-makingly honest and brutal, yet touching and humorous at the same time, Apperly takes the reader on a journey into the souls of the street people, bums... whatever you want to call them when you deign to notice them at all.Wasteground

Helped me pass the Finance section of the CPA exam!Review Date: 2002-01-17
Excellent, focused and great help in passing CPA exam.Review Date: 1999-09-04
This book is more detailed than Delaney's 2 book set, and is specific to each of the 4 CPA exam sections. If you have passed some of the exam sections and need to redo one or two for whatever reason and have done ALL of the questions in the 2-book set and are looking for more detailed theory explanations, then this (or any of the other 3 in the 4-book series) book is the one to get.
Far exceeds the others (CPA Excel software, Conviser Duffy etc...) in ease of use, clarity of material and overall CPA preparation.
Overall, top marks.

THIS WINE ATLAS USED FOR AN AMAZING WINE TOUR "DOWN UNDER'Review Date: 2002-01-30
From there, the tour extended to the whole of New Zealand. Again the Atlas laid the groundwork for my visits, enabling me to meet most of New Zealand's greatest owners and winemakers, including John Buck at Te Mata,Kevin Judd at the famous Cloudy Bay,Neil McClallum at Dry River, Grant Taylor at Gibbston Valley and many others.Naturally, covering nine separate wine regions entailed tasting many other prime quality varietals in such warmer climes as Waiheke Island and Hawkes Bay with their magnificent cabernets and Bordeaux blends, plus gorgeous chardonneys, etc. In all cases, the Atlas gave regional and subregional data and exacting descriptions of "terrior" necessary to a serious study.Halliday is, in my book, a more comprehensive writer and reviewer of "new world" wines than even Jancis Robinson or Robert Parker. He also adds the direct insights of his winemaking in Australia and his pioneering of pinot noir developments "down under". His reputation as a critic is simply impeccable and his easily read writing style, while detailed, is at once comprehensive and comprehensible. It is a must read and essential reference for serious oenophiles and fellow wine tourists.

Fans of Chilean protest music will enjoy reading this book not only because it tells the story of Victor Jara, but because it also records the history of many other important Chilean folksingers like Violeta Parra, Inti-Illimani, and Quilapayun, as well as the poet Pablo Neruda. Joan, if somehow you should find this message, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for keeping the memory of Victor Jara alive. Your courage and humanity humbles me.
Reading this book, I am reminded of Joe Hill, the North American folksinger and union organizer who met a similar fate, and, of course, I am also reminded of all the other disappeared activists in Chile, Argentina, Guatemala, El Salvador, Colombia, and elsewhere. May Victor's songs inspire us all to continue working for social change and may peace prevail in Latin America and around the world.
