What was it really like to be a soldier in the Civil War?Review Date: 2001-11-25
Although a few Civil War purists may take umbrage with the technique, Mr. Halberstadt successfully blends period photographs with dozens of stunning reenactment photos, all expertly crafted and woven into a lively text attempting to answer the following question: What was it really like to be a soldier in the Civil War? For my money, Halberstadt is the first author since Civil War veteran Sam Watkins wrote "Co. Aythc" to capture the essence of the wartime experience for the rank-and-file soldier.
"The American Civil War" is a fantastic reading experience. Rich in detail, eloquently written, and beautifully illustrated, it gives readers a "you are there" perspective on Army life, North and South, in America's bloodiest conflict. For anyone who wants to understand the Civil War, Mr. Halberstadt's book is required reading. It is a central work in my Civil War library.

Excellent book for artistsReview Date: 2008-10-02
good addition to an anatomy reference collectionReview Date: 2007-09-28
It has very acurate illustrations and if focudsed somewhat on comparitive anatomy drawing. I could cry almost when I see book illustrations with deformed lumpy horses because this book really explains them well too (which is good for fantasy artists/horse hobbyists) and the whole book offers very good study on the range of movement, which is particularly useful.
If you want a book to show you how to draw anatomy this is the one! it doesn't necessarily mean it's the only one you need, but it's by itself the most comprehensive (in the range it covers of various animals as well as human anatomy) and also brilliantly put together and very scientific without being too dry.
Five stars!

Very detailed depictions of animalsReview Date: 1998-05-27
There are very detailed charts, with DMC color suggestions, and beautiful color photographs for inspiration. There are also many ideas for how to finish the projects and make them into lovely gifts.
I thought this was a wonderful book, one I would highly recommend to any needleworker who loves animals!

The science of predictionReview Date: 2007-10-08
The next Isaac AsimovReview Date: 2008-01-25
This is the best, clearest explanation of the implication for useful predictions in areas governed by power law (as opposed to Normal) statistical distributions I've come across so far. It is intelligible without being patronizing. It manages to explain complex concepts without resorting to mind-boggling lists of arcane mathematical expressions, and as an added bonus it is laced with a fine, dry humor. David Orrell is, IMHO, the obvious intellectual successor to the late, great, Isaac Asimov.

A visually stunning bookReview Date: 2001-11-27
Very Pleased!Review Date: 2002-09-21
Beautifully illustrated, offering an abundance of recipes for lovely soaps, lotions, massage oils, shampoos, shower gels, facial cleansers, toners... help for digestion, circulation, skin-care, moods, stress, water retention... and lots more in there! These are quite easy and enjoyable to make.
This book is appropriate for even beginning hobbyists, as it explains the basics of working with essential oils (including cautions), and lists therapeutic values of the various EO's used in these recipes; also lists properties of several carrier oils. Each step is well outlined so that even the novice can prepare these to perfection.
Great for making gifts to give, or you could even give this book itself as a gift! It would be very well received by anyone with an interest in a more natural, healthful lifestyle - especially those who enjoy being creative. I'm ordering a few more to give as gifts along with sample items prepared from the book.
I look forward to many years of making special soaps and lotions for family and friends (and myself!). The several different massage oils are fabulous and particularly quick and easy to prepare. This book is most definitely worth the small price tag, I'm so happy I bought it.
It is magazine-size; firm, glossy cover (not hardback, but firmer than paperback); nice quality gloss pages and lovely photo illustrations. Highly recommended.

An excellent history of the 1998 Formula 1 SeasonReview Date: 1999-03-03
Apart from overview articles, it provides a detailed review of each team and the drivers as well as a detailed description of each race, including all the qualifying action. For the statistically minded there is a full set of stats including lap charts for each race.
There are also brief overviews of other motor racing formulae.
Overall, if you want a permanent record of the Grand Prix year, you will have to go a long way to find a better book.
