This is a great book about the Haitian Revolution it is different essay about this revolution impact on other nations in the Atlantic World. It not only gives various historians thoughts and ideas but a more rounder view of what this revolution really did for the atlantic world.

Like most of the recent work of David Geggus, this book provides a good frame work and introduction for a much-needed academic study of the Haitian Revolution and it's world-wide impact.

THE INDEPENDENT CAROLINA BASEBALL LEAGUE... is a masterpiece of regional history. Sure, it's about baseball and the almost religious nature of its practice during this time and place. But there is so much more in the details about social structure , convention and the fine line between the public and private.

Utley and Verner were quite diligent with their research. The collection of photos and the league statistics corroborate the many anecdotes and colorful player profiles. The linear narrative is perfect and puts some rails under what might have otherwise been a haphazard assembly of good yarns. I highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about baseball, the pioneer spirit, and well-documented history.

This is a wonderful book. Not only is it a story of baseball, but it is a story of the Depression-era South and life in the textile mill towns of North Carolina. Incredibly well researched and full of great photographs, this book will appeal to anyone with an interest in history even if they are not a baseball fan. As a baseball book it relates the great stories and legendary expoits of small town heroes from the Golden Era of the sport. As a social history it shows how textile mills were the lifeblood of dozens of small towns, a part of Southern life that is all to often forgotten today.

Excellent. We use it each time we go...the pages are worn...recommendations on places to stay, dining, etc. have been right on target. I know that using this book helped introduce us to the Outer Banks in such a way that our experience kept us coming back. Thank you Insiders' Guides for wonderful publications.

I was too long in purchasing a guide to the Outer Banks. I'd been going for years so what was there that I could learn? Certainly I'd learned all there was to learn in my visits. What was left? This book proved that the answer was plenty!

Even if you purchase this book to discover new restaurants, you won't be disappointed. I learned that there were restaurants off the beaten track, on roads that I thought had led nowhere, which actually curled around to an island and to a wonderfully intimate and wonderful restaurant. I learned what restaurants specialized in gourmet, which needed reservations, sometimes a year in advance, and which catered just to family.

Also, where could I take my pooch? Which beaches would accomodate us during the summer? Where were tennis courts and other facilities? Where were nature walks? What's to see where?

The pages have become dog-eared. Notes have been scrawled in the margins. This book has become indispenable for us, and I'm certain that if you are a visitor to the Outer Banks, it probably will be indispensable to you as well.

I had an old copy of this guide when we were vacationing on the Outer Banks. It was very helpful, but I loved it so much I bought the current copy to update, both were worth every penny. I could only wish all travel guides were as good as this one

This guide was extremely accurate and helpful in planning our trip the Outerbanks. It continued to be useful when we arrived. We used it to find affordable resturants and activities for the whole family. We highly recommend this book.

Gallant's book was the first clear and concise treatment of nonlinear statistical regression models. It provided general theory, examples of applications and was very well written. The book by Bates and Watts came out one year later and added measures of the degree of nonlinearity of a problem. Still the first source that I would go to when implementing a nonlinear model.

Item as described, arrived in good shape in a timely fashion. Very nicely compiled. Would do business with again.

When I think of the term "Irish," a few things come to mind: potato famine, green shamrocks, and Notre Dame Football. I also generally think of the large and prominent Irish populations in Boston, Chicago, and other areas in the North. But, one thing that never comes to mind is the term Southerner.

In his book, The Irish in the South, 1815-1877, David Gleeson brings the idea of an Irish Southerner to light by examining the nineteenth century Irish Diaspora to the U.S. and its impact on the American South. Ideas examined include the impact of the Irish on southern economy, the Catholic Church, politics, and the formation and destruction of the Confederate States of America. In all of this Gleeson implies that the reason the terms Irish and southerner are not automatically linked like in other areas of the country (New England) is they integrated with the southern culture and indeed helped to define the South.

The book is an exhaustive study of not only the Irish, but it also gives the reader a peek into the antebellum South as well. The book has given new meaning to the term "Irish" as well as a new appreciation for the impact of the Irish on the development of the South.

My fourth-grade son and I are reading "Jack Adrift" out loud to each other. We both love the book, which makes us laugh and nearly cry with the sensitive and humorous descriptions of a young boy's life. Gantos is an excellent writer, who really makes you feel sympathetic to the characters in "Jack Adrift." We are now eager to read his other books.

Jack Henry is back. The stories in this book weave together as Jack faces a new school with a nasty principal, a beautiful and smart teacher, irritating siblings, and parents who are preaching totally different approaches to success in life. The book has great humor and pathos. Gantos perfectly captures the mental state of boys at this age.

Some of the book's funniest moments are captured in the handwritten diary entries that precede the chapters. Be sure to read them. Also, given the fate of so many other Henry family pets, I have to admit I feared the worst when the vet tells Jack how to get his duck to put on new feathers. Like all his books, this one is a fun read aloud. You know the writing is terrific when listeners to the story put their hands over their eyes when the duck goes in the freezer.

Sweet! This book is wonderful in a sense that it is one of those "old" mystery books. I've absolutely loved Baldwin's writing ever since I recieved the copy of KILL THE BENEFACTOR from him personally. I encourage you to read Baldwin's KILL THE BENEFACTOR. I welcome his writing and absolutely love this book! CONGRATULATIONS BALDWIN! A job well-done!

Hurrah! A genuinely clever mystery plotter who reminds me of my old favorites. I've been a mystery fan for years now, and have found that I tend to prefer older stories and authors to new ones. So many of the new mysteries seem to rely on grisly "hooks" or "cutesy" themes to attract readers. I have missed the smarts of writers like Ngaio Marsh and Arthur Conan-Doyle and their cunning characters. A warm welcome to Mart Baldwin, Hawg Hackett, and their lovely North Carolina mountains.

Every night before bed my almost two year old daughter searches through her pile of books to find Kinnakeet (also known in our house as Ki Ki). As soon as she finds it, she screams in delight. The story is excellently written and the drawings are a great compliment to the story. We typically read it twice each night. It's a favorite in our house!

Kinnakeet and the Lighthouse is an absolute jewel of book. The storyline is clear, concise and abounds with colorful, easy-to-understand text. The artwork is beautifully done and complements the story perfectly. The authors do an excellent job of bringing out the noble Kinnakeet's character and it is a pleasure for me to read this book to my young niece and nephew. I recommend this book to anybody interested in teaching selfless values and courage to the young minds within their influence and look forward to seeing more inspirational stories by these talented authors.

I had read a review that complained about Bullard only using visible characteristics but for quick ids it is a good reference to have. It is a great addition to my collection. Short and easy taxanomic keys. I also have Paul Sandifers Decapods of the Chesapeake Bay and the two go well together. Bullard draws from Sandifer in his book but also has other good drawings for identification. For most species there are drawings for each zoea life stage.
