I loved the book from the very first page. I have sat for hours looking at the different postcards and reading the personal messages that were written on the backs of them. Every message in some way touches your heart. The books layout is simple to view but at the same time creative and catches and keeps your attention. It is a great coffee table book and I would highly recommend it. The author, Mr. Dixon is certainly very talented and was really able to capture the deep feelings people had of the seashore.

An Impressive Work, As Much Literature as History

I am extremely impressed with Taylor's book, which explores the real and imagined consequences of the Civil War on families in border states, where the question of secession was the most complicated and the most fraught. This book not only documents (in writing that rises to the level of great literary writing -- a rarity in young historians) the actual occurrence of split families and what they had to say for themselves, but also the psychological, moral, and political implications of families at odds with each other. That is, this book gets beyond the idea of "the brother's war" as merely a curiosity or a sentimental metaphor, and shows how the state of the society -- the relations between men and women, white and black -- itself is revealed in the experience of these families, observed in extremis.

The writing, again, is extraordinary. Fans of Doris Kearn Goodwin or David McCullough will love this book, and will be pleased to know that Taylor is of the new generation of historians and likely to be around and writing for a very long time.

This is an excellente book. It is extremely well written and gives you an easy explanation of how the lines in your hand show your real path in life. The author uses excellent samples in every single chapter. I strongly recommend everyone to read this book if they want to find a solution to the problems in their lives.

A thoroughly enjoyable book, especially for those familiar with Ocean City, MD and the Delaware beaches. Every summer these beaches swell to the sizes of large cities with visitors looking for sun and relaxation by the Atlantic. "Down the Ocean" takes you back, in picture postcards, to a time when these beaches were just gaining their popularity. Early hotels are shown in their heyday. There are views of the Boardwalks and of people in the sun bathing outfits of the early 1900's. I had so much fun with this book I finished it in one sitting and would highly recommend it to others!

Concise, up-to-date and very well-written intro text

This book is extremely well-written and covers ancient Judaism from the earliest times up through the beginnings of merkavah mysticism in the Talmudic period. It's not a huge book, and one might think it too slender to effectively cover the topic. But the writing is economical and very readable, and the opinions presented are contemporary and take advantage of the latest scholarship.

It's unfortunate that this title is so expensive -- especially considering the binding is of the cheapest kind. For this money we deserve signature binding, or at least better glue. Still recommended, most highly!

This is the second time that I have taken an illustrated, sightseeing tour through a small colonial town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. It was as informative and absorbing as my first tour of an Eastern Shore town with Mindie Burgoyne's book, "Snow Hill."

I grew up in Maryland, just north of Washington, D.C. and we always thought of Maryland as being in two parts: where I lived and east of us somewhere was the Eastern Shore.

We never knew much about the Eastern Shore except that we thought that it was old, "behind the times" and on the other side of the Chesapeake Bay. And so it was, in a quiet but elegant sort of way. Now, through Ms. Burgoyne's books, I'm learning more about the Eastern Shore that now rises as a gem of Americana, quite preserved in its simplicity and its modest grandeur.

The authenticity of this book rests upon Ms. Burgoyne's extensive, personal research in the accumulation of archival and cotemporary photographs, plus her research of facts for her editorial comments. In Ms. Burgoyne's hands, these photographs and facts make this book a truly historic document. I would certainly recommend "Easton, Then and Now" to anyone interested in the Eastern Shore of Maryland and to anyone who would like to take a stroll through a historic part of colonial Maryland that has changed "Now," since "Then"...but not that much.

Great Genealogy find, wonderful story of the first Willett's in Maryland followed by 12 generations into the 1980's, also indexed in back by names making things easy to find. Includes charts, pictures of people, crests, tools, copies of original handwritings, maps. First part describes European Ancestry of the Willett families. Many Willetts moved to Kentucky & Indiana.
