Connecticut Books

This title is currently being revised. While the latest title, the 6th edition, is available at this time, a new, 7th edition will be available in May 2002. These walks are interesting and for the most part easy. More, new walks are being added to the new edition, the best of what is already there will be kept....

The Smithsonian Natural Guides are my new bibles for travel. Who really cares about those guides for motels, restaurants and cheesy attractions anyhow? These guides take one to the real America behind (and often above) the tourist traps!

Finch and Wallen team up to the best of their expertise with splendid descriptive writing and photography (the latter always a trademark of this series!). Cape Cod, The Berkshires, the Connecticut and Rhode Island Coasts as well as other areas of natural interest are brought right to the reader and make you want to go there immediately and see what you've just read about.

This was my first project as a ghostwriter (although I was credited as one of the authors) and it was a great experience. Working with with William F. Buckley Jr. was a pleasure! If you live or work in Stamford, you should track down a copy of this magnificent book. The photos by Bill Hubbell are excellent!!!

For those who love the country or simply love Taber's accounts of her beautiful country home Stillmeadow, Stillmeadow Seasons does not disappoint. This book allows the reader to absorb and meditate on country living while gaining an understanding of the appeal Gladys Taber and her friend Jill found when they fled city life to move to Stillmeadow.

With her life-treasuring anecdotes, Taber opens up her world of good food, fanciful pets, friends, and a plentiful earth to the reader, while also being entertaining and nostalgic.

I find each Taber book unique. After having read several others, Stillmeadow Seasons captured the true Taber style that had me hooked the moment I picked up her first book. Her writing is poetic, at times matter of fact but always insightful and with a good message. She truly understands the language of the country and its lessons and truths.

Stillmeadow Seasons is a must-read for Taber fans and non-fans alike.

The Stratford Devil is a haunting historical fiction novel based on a true incident. In 1651, nearly half a century before the notorious witch trials in Salem, Goody Basset became the second woman in Connecticut charged with witchcraft, and was hanged for her alleged crime. The Stratford Devil is the tale of a strong-willed woman whose independent spirit is at odds with strict Puritan society, and the one event that set in motion a cycling chain of consequences leading to her destruction. Much like Arthur Miller's classic play "The Crucible", The Stratford Devil is a powerful allegory for the perils of religious fundamentalism and authoritarianism gone awry. Highly recommended.

One of the best ways to win a case before going to trial is using preclusive devices, such as summary judgment.

Freedman discusses the techniques you can use to win your case or narrow your liability before a trial starts. This can mean a huge savings in bringing your case to a satisfying close.

Freedman outlines the major preclusive legal devices, such as summary judgment, and backs up his discussion with support from case law and court opinions. He does not simply present the mechanics of how the various devices work, but also when and how you can increase your chance of winning your case or your motion by using these techniques.

Freedman's introduction gives a basic outline of preclusive device practice, while later chapters cover summary judgment adjudication without a trial in depth with great clarity, precision, and thoughtfulness. Accelerated judgments are touched upon here, but without the same penetrating attention as summary judgment.

Other important devices Freedman covers include discovery (requests for admission which are essential for a summary judgment motion's accompanying statements of fact), release agreements, dismissal and settlement agreements, and bifurcation (trying a case first on the cause of action and then on damages, for instance). Additional chapters cover the preclusive doctrines of res judicata and collateral estoppel.

Freedman presents a well organized, contemporary approach to how summary judgment and preclusive devices are used in courts today. It will come in handy for recent law grads looking to enhance their motion practice or pro se litigants who want to learn how to avoid the cost and hassle of a prolonged trial.

This book tells about some of the ways that government wastes our money and refuses to acknowledge it. Each chapter will raise eyebrows. Some of the things that our government is doing are unbelievable. The book can be read for its entertainment value as well as its revelations: the author's sense of humor is on every page.

I found this book to be another of Hal Borland's masterful descriptions of the nature around us. When Hal describes a brook to fish in, or a hill loaded with color in the fall, an animal's tracks in the snow,a weathered fence line falling down, the sound of geese far overhead on a cold clear night.....You can feel, hear, and see in your mind's eye... exactly what he was describing. You might have even experienced these things, yourself, at some point in your busy life, but never thought any more about it until you opened the pages of this and all others by Hal Borland. This book is not only a MUST read....It's a GREAT read. Enjoy

This book is an excellent porthole to the past. Mr. McGee's writting style makes it enjoyable and absorbable, as there is much historical information in this book. This book is a must for anyone who is intersted in New England history, mill history, or early American history. I live in one of the villages this book portrays and I appreciate all the research and information Mr. McGee has included, thus making this a "must have" book for local citizens.
