Alaska Books

This book is magnificently thought out and put together with the best photos of Alaska I have seen. The international edition appeals to the most frequent travellers to Alaska - German speakers, Enlish speakers and Japanese - as well as residents of Alaska, Canada's Yukon and the United States. There are MANY books out there on Alaska and the Yukon but the editors of this book selected the best photographs from the past 20 years and wove them together with acurate descriptions and inspiring prose. It is a 'must have' and an ideal gift.

I bought this book almost twenty years ago and have found none since that compare in information about sewing animal skins. A must have for any real purist.

From basic facts about what causes the Aurora Borealis to how it has been perceived throughout history, Secrets Of The Aurora Borealis is an amazing presentation intended for a general audience and is highly recommended for anyone who has ever marveled and wondered about this legendary northern phenomena.

We've read all the books in the series. At 9 my youngest has probably out grown them, but for a developing reader 5 to 8 its a good series, nice family and friends set in an interesting Alaskan setting, a sense of the frontier and nature. Highly recommended, should be in all libraries or school collections aimed at this age group.

This is a wonderful read for emerging readers. The story is simple and straight forward, and the wonderful illustrations help drive the story. Finding books that feature an adventure story [for young kids]can be tricky. Add in the fact that it takes place in Alaska, which could be used as a jumping off point for a quickie geography lesson..... Sam "reads" like a real life boy. His emotions are true and honest.

In this delightful story, Helen both tells and illustrates her people's customs in her childhood and shares how her family encouraged her to overcome any limitations from her polio.

This is a great book and I would recommend it to anyone from someone who is the least bit interested in sheep hunting to an expert in this field!

Shem Pete's Alaska: The Territory Of The Upper Cook Inlet Dena'ina is an informationally impressive geographic manual that reconstructs traditional place names and maps of Alaska as drawn from the life experiences of Shem Pete and other Dena'ina and Ahtna speakers. Historic comments, vignettes, a wealth of black-and-white photographs, shaded-relief place-name maps, and more fill the pages of this meticulous and substantive recording of the close connection Dena'ina people share with the land. Shem Pete's Alaska is a very welcome addition to Native American Studies, as well as an essential acquisition for Alaskan Regional History reference collections.

This is a wonderful book, full of Alaska Native history, names, places/maps, languages, music. Absolutely priceless. Worth every penny if you can get your hands on it. Written ABOUT the people BY the people. An absolute MUST for researchers.

Ray and Jenny chronicle their trip from Alaska's Bering Sea coastline northward around Alaska to Canada. In between the tales of frigid water, dodging ice floes and grizzly bears the reader is given a sense of the wonder and awe of what I would normally consider a bleak, frozen barren wasteland. Wildlife abounds, especially birds, and so do people. I was rather surprised at the number of villages they encountered along the way.

The photos are all in black and white. This helps to convey a sense of cold, but color photos would have been nice. I'm sure that costs a lot extra to print though.

While I will probably never do half the things this couple have done, this book is very inspirational to me. We are already making our own tarp, net-tent, backpacks and quilt based on Ray and Jenny's designs and I can't wait to hit the trails this fall. Books like this expand the mind as to what is possible. Buy a copy and give it to a couch potato near you.
