This is an excellent lower and upper elementary informational picture book. Rich language is combined with double-page realistic oil paintings as the story of a year in the life of an Alaskan river is told. The river is shown to be a constantly changing home and source of food to many ecologically connected living things.

I can best describe A River Ran Out of Eden as an epic. It's a tale of courage, morals, and combatting inner demons. I would also not hesitate to call it a fable. It clearly shows how a single person can disrupt a perfect little domain. It tells the story of a family that has lived alone on an Aleutian island for years, and are perfect, until a stranger comes to the island. The plot is well-paced, there aren't many characters, but they are very well written. This book also presents the plot from every character's point of view, making it great to read. Each character has distinct problems, and I think their mishaps could easily be applied to everyday life. The symbolism is also applicable, the stranger in the book could easily symbolize modern life, and the family could represent all that is traditional. How these two concepts clash is very real, and makes a wonderful story as well.

This is a great book!! If you live in, or are interested in visiting Alaska, be sure to read this. Then with all that is within you, attempt to check out what it says in the field. It is written by geologists who actually live in Alaska. It is great to read along with a rock and mineral identification guide, so you can more easily identify them in the field later. Buy it, read it.

Although this book may contain just about everything you'd want to know about the Stikine River area, it is by no means a dry, boring read just for scholars. It is beautifully written and a very pleasant read. If you are one of the lucky few who know the Stikine, you should read this book to learn more about it. If you don't know about this great, wild Canadian and American river, you should read this book to find out what you're missing.

Written by a Scandinavian woman missionary, this book shows the power and beauty of Christianity as it was being revived during the early 20th century. The writer starts by telling of her desolate childhood, which is a little hard to press through, but through this description you understand how she came to such a beautiful reliance on the Lord as her loving Father in later years. One chapter, in which she recounts her first message in a church to the Lapps to whom she'd gone to be a missionary, is a wonderful, faith-filled message that will encourage any Christian in taking the Lord at His word for any need, including healing.

I wish many such books were still available to help raise the standard of Christianity in modern churches. Too bad this book is only found at such a high price--I bought it two years ago for probably about $30, and it is now around $150.

I had the good fortune of growing up with Lori Yanuchi in a little place called Allentown, PA. What I didnt know back then was her talent for writing and zest for the outdoors! My hat goes off to Lori for capturing the hearts of young children and the young at heart with this great book "Running with the Big Dogs"! My boys were entertained and educated about Alaska and are waiting impatiently for her next book.....no pressure Lori! This book is not a dust collector!

Enhanced with both color and black/white photography, maps, a glossary, and a bibliography, The Sami People: Traditions In Transition by Veli-Pekka Lehtola is written from the perspective of the indigenous Sami people of Scandinavia and European Russia, the only ethnic group in Europe to be recognized as aboriginals. An economically and culturally diverse people who speak several dialects of the Sami language, they have been divided by national borders for centuries. In recent decades the Sami have been transitioning from their principle image as herders of reindeers to such contemporary enterprises as writers, artists, and political activists. The Sami People is written by academician and Sami native Veli-Pekka Lehtola (a Senior Research Fellow, University of Oulu, Finland), and is available in English thanks to the excellent and pains-taking translation skills of Linna Weber Muller-Wille. A unique and invaluable work of original research, The Sami People will prove to be of special interest and value to the study of circumpolar aboriginal peoples, and is an important contribution to the fields of anthropology, sociology, ethnic cultural studies, and European history.

-------------------
And Now, about the Sarah Palin Homepage:
With all the hype, you probably STILL want to get factual information about Sarah - her background, who she really is. We aren't getting real balanced information from the analysts and headlines - no real depth, but already it's being heavily spun and slanted right or left. So what's real and true? You can google and find it, but you really have to spend huge amounts of time to dig. You couldn't easily do and then follow all that on your Kindle -- but now you actually can.

After hours of sleuthing on the PC, I think I found the real sources, from Alaska, not just the Wiki that all the news anchors have been relying on. So I made a menued portal for your browser to access them.

With this, you don't have to bookmark things, you don't have to spend thirty seconds rolling and clicking every time you want to see something or search something in the browser. You just click and jump directly into sites that are clearly labeled. Kindle browsing is now fun.

Besides the real sources to read about what she's really done, details and photos of her family, and what that "investigation" is really all about, there's lots more here. (And yes, I just heard, in talking to a friend, a version that had gotten it all totally wrong - it's what they remembered from the "news")

You can use these same menus to track Sarah all through the campaign. Through the convention and beyond. Read her speeches, interviews, and what is being said about her and McCain from all points - the Christian right to the extreme left. All influential analysts. You can even access Obama, Biden, and Hillary sites.

This isn't a static eBook you read once, not a blog with yesterday's comments. It's a portal that jumps right to live, current minute news on the most important political sites. All you need is your Whispernet switch turned on.

Even if you're not decided, or firmly plan to vote for the other side, this is a great way to find out all about Sarah - on every issue, and from her long-time Alaska enemies as well as her friends. And you can follow the other players too, even Hillary and Bill as they participate in the fray. See for yourself what's real and what's hype.

If you think this is just bookmarks, it isn't. These are not obvious main website links. Often they dive way below right to where the election data is. You would NOT want to have to type these in on Kindle's keyboard, but we already did it all - pages chosen as the best. And it's not just a list of URLs, but organized in menus for you. Everything is English-labeled, in flip menus for quick use. Even with hyperlinks to jump you back to top with a click.

And More! Buy this then check back once in a while for updated versions. Ask for additions and we may add them. You'll get any and all added links without extra charge just by deleting your Kindle copy and re-downloading the latest version from Amazon.

And no paid subscription is needed. Buy this once and you've got them all. Try the sample download with a couple of working links and see for yourself how this is pure convenience, compared to working the browser by hand using individual random bookmarks. Don't miss a day of the campaign, click to try it right now...Enjoy!
-Don

PS: There are other portal menu eBooks focused on McCain, on Obama, or just on the Election in general - plus a homepage that does sports, weather, and a lot of non-political things. Each one has some of the same major sites, but also, each one is different with some links unique to it... Check them all out by typing my last name "Ursem" in the Kindle store.

This book was invaluable during our recent inspection of the property we purchased in Alaska. This format is easy to understand and it was easy to identify and differnetiate between the different species of animals inhabiting our land quickly just from scat and tracks. A must have for anyone wanting to live outside the city in Alaska.
