This book chronicles the life and legacy of a caring, vigilant doctor who ranks among Alaska's great leaders. Young Dr. C. Earl Albrecht arrived in Alaska during the Great Depression, the sole physician to a remote colony of impoverished farm families. At the Palmer colony he delivered babies, treated diseases, performed emergency surgery, built a new hospital, then raised money to keep the hospital open. He became Alaska's first full-time commissioner of health under territorial Gov. Gruening. Deeply concerned about the health of Alaska's Natives, he all but eradicated T.B. in the Bush, created programs to teach nutrition and sanitation in rural villages, and won the right for Natives to be treated at Alaska hospitals. He helped found The International Union for Circumpolar Health in 1967.
A great man - I'm glad that I read this fine biography.

Fascinatingly different!

These are not just typical Christian novels (4 stories in 1 book). All stories can be read on their own, but they are intertwined. The stories take you through different generations with people from different countries - all contributing to what America is now. You experience their struggles with the land, relating to the Indians, facing and dealing with injustice, and above all experiencing God in their daily lives.

The book is very hard to put down once you've started, so make sure you've got enough time!

For sixteen years Missionary Nurse Helen Frost lived at Igloo in the Sawtooth Mountains seventy miles from Nome. In emergencies, Helen cared for the sick or injured in her home. In the fall and winter, the families lived in the village, hunting and trapping while the children attended school. She often said, "Alaska is a place where you go ahead and do things you never had expected to do or thought you could do." As the village nurse, she was often the doctor and the dentist. During the war she was at times the school teacher, store keeper, the postmistress who radioed daily weather reports, the marriage commissioner, orchestra director, dressmaker, village cop...and excellent photographer. Helen later served at Teller, Shishmaref and Sitka. The book also covers her retirement years, tributes, funeral service and a bibliography section. Map on inside cover.

Get Mears! Frederick Mears: Builder Of The Alaska Railroad by Katharine Carson Crittenden is the eye-opening story of Colonel Frederick Mears (1878-1939), who was appointed by President Wilson in 1914 and served as chief engineer and later chairman of the Alaska Engineering Commission until 1923. It would be his mission to oversee the forging of the Alaskan Railroad, an act that would forever change the state, its wilderness, and the people who lived there. A solid chapter of Alaskan history and the amazing life of a determined and visionary man mark this incredible read, Get Mears! is especially recommended for students of railroading history. truth is revealed in this book and you will love it. webb's writing style can be difficult to follow but push on and don't be discouraged. he says things that need to be heard and understood. very heady stuff. our world is trapped in a horrific phase of wealth-worship and love of money. jesus provided the formula to break this cycle but the magic wasn't truly appreciated. webb helps expalin it. you will love it and grow if you push through this very intellectual but magnificent treatise. god bless you.

I recently traveled with Valparaiso University to Alaska to study glaciation and the glaciers of Alaska. This book was required reading prior to arriving in Alaska.

Let me tell you, this publication explains everything about glaciers from conception to melting. It also helps to have someone who is truly passionate about glaciers explain them.

I would suggest this to anyone traveling to Alaska whether amateur or experienced in glaciers. You will truly view and appreciate each glacier more after you read this publication.

Gold Rush Grub: From Turpentine Stew To Hoochinoo is not just a vintage-themed cookbook, but also an in-depth examination of culinary life on the frontier, especially among prospectors. Time-tested recipes of wild foods, or foods that stored well even in inclement conditions, formed the basis of many a prospector's diet; Gold Rush Grub reveals how to recreate the recipes of yesteryear with step-by-step, easy-to-follow instructions. Vintage photography of former prospectors and an amazing tour through history complete Gold Rush Grub, an authentic glimpse into the harsh life and culinary accomplishments of the old gold rush era.

An excellent account of Canadian history

This is without a doubt one of the most interesting books that I have read in a long time. The authors have in detail given us an account of what it would have been like to venture through the wilds of B.C. to cross the passes, and raft down a dangerous river to get to Dawson. Living in this northern region in their log cabin and panning for gold would be an adventure most people wouldn't even consider. A well written book Mr. and Mrs. Wilson and I am looking further to more of your adventures.
