Filled with recipes from "old style" southern cooking, not for the calorie/cholesterol counting folks. We all have a copy of this in my family and have for many years. Our favorite recipe is the asparagus casserole...yum!!!

I have had this book for 20 years and it is still the book I go back to each time I want to look up an Art Deco hotel/apartment in the Historic Art Deco district of South Miami Beach. The pictures were taken before much of the present renovations and it is fun to compare the differences. Very detailed information about the origins of Miami Beach and the pioneers who envisioned this tropical paradise. I lived on Miami Beach when the renovations were first starting and the area was nothing but deteriorated and boarded up buildings. I return time and again to see this area now thriving and returned to its original beauty. For anyone who is an avid fan of Tropical Art Deco, this is the book to use as a reference guide for the Miami Beach Art Deco District.

A wonderful representation of midwestern traditional cooking. It is hard to find a cookbook that consistently produces a winner. This is it!

In The Minor League Milwaukee Brewers 1859-1952, Wisconsin sports historian Brian A. Podoll presents a straightforward history of baseball in Milwaukee from its debut in that city in 1859 down to the Brewers' last season in 1952. Black-and-white illustrations fill out and nicely enhance this in-depth narration, which is packed from cover to cover with statistics, trivia gems, little-known quirks of great players of yesteryear, and an overall inner core of respect for this great and popular favorite game. If you are a dedicated Brewers fan, then Brian Podoll's The Minor League Milwaukee Brewers 1859-1952 is an absolute "must"!

As a collector of art photography, I am, naturally, interested in young, up-and-coming photographers and their work. I saw a published photograph by Andrea Modica, found out that she lived and worked in upstate New York relatively near me, and then, a short time later, saw this wonderful paperbound collection in the Smithsonian bookshop. These black and white, almost classically composed, portraits of minor league players are brilliant character studies which constantly surprise the viewer. They show friendship and athleticism, a competitive spirit and, yes, eroticism. They are magnificent. Strangely enough, the highly informative interview with the photographer is uncredited. If you are interested in photography and/or baseball, you owe it to yourself to buy this book.

Baseball's minor leagues, like the major leagues have had a long and storied history. This book details its history and shows how greed and paranoia among major league baseball owners denied the minors their chance to bask in the major league sun.

Many major league teams around today, like the Baltimore Orioles and Milwaukee Brewers were originally long-time minor league teams which should have had an opportunity to become major league teams on their own. The book devotes a chapter to the original Baltimore Orioles who had a dynasty of their own in the 1920s, and another chapter to the Newark Bears' dynasty of the 1940's and early 1950s. Chapters are also devoted to the American Association, the Texas League and Branch Rickey. Rickey revolutionized minor league baseball with his idea of developing major league talent by "farming out" new players to minor league teams.

Sullivan also talks about the PCL's attempt to become the third major league in the late 1940s. Alas, many minor leagues before had attempted this and all were 'shot down' in their attempts. The last section of the book details the fall and subsequent rise of the minor leagues.

Although it's a bit dated now, this book does an excellent job cataloging the history of the minors.

Very few fans have read this important report. Many will feel that it unfairly blames the players for the drug problems, and gives a pass to owners, commentators and fans. Nonetheless, the only major attack on the Report has been by Roger Clemens who disagrees vehemently with the Report's findings on his personal involvement with performance enhancing substances.

Whatever your views, I urge fans to read it for themselves. A copy is available free from Major League Baseball.
