and the patrons of colored baseball, to them I dedicate this book."

And what a book it is.

Originally published in 1907, Sol White is not just writing from a historian's perspective of the pre-NLB era, he was a major contributor as a player, manager and team owner on some of the best clubs from that era.

With an emphasis on box scores and photographs, the great teams, players and memorable games are chronicled in this 1996 reprint of the original book - with only minor editorial corrections - a supplement & additional articles by White and other writers. The original small run of copies was poorly printed and an end note explains the reproduction process for clarity.

A lenghty introduction by Jerry Malloy not only encapsulates the key areas in White's book, but provides a better understanding of a time when Jim Crow stepped into the batter's box of the professional game.

White was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006. What he gave to future generations of fans & historians through the book is a grand slam.

Thank you, Cooperstown!

When author Sol White was among the 17 people who were selected this week by the Baseball Hall of Fame, I got curious about this book of his. Until now, few people have known of it. Presumably and hopefully, the Hall of Fame selection will change this.

The book, originally published in 1907, was apparently the first major attempt at a history of black baseball, written by a man who was heavily immersed in it for many years straddling the turn of the last century. As a player, he appears to have been at least excellent and possibly great -- an infielder who played all four positions and hit in the .300's with fair power. White's commentary about himself as a player is very routine and modest; most of what we gather of his playing is from the lengthy introduction written by Jerry Malloy for the 1995 re-printing.

The original book is preserved and included in this edition. Much of that original edition was "non-text" -- photos, box-scores, and delightful print-ads. The text portion is full of fascinating detail belying its brevity -- and VERY well written. Much of it is a series of dry year-by-year accounts of what happened in black baseball, really exactly like what we see in the "mainstream" annuals of the period like the Spalding guides. But there are also some sections that are quite activist, getting into the segregation issue and the plight of the black player. Additionally there are interesting sections on hitting, pitching, and managing, some of the them written by other authors. This edition also includes copies of newspaper and magazine articles on black baseball from later as well as earlier years, including an article written by White in 1930 for the Amsterdam News.

There are many wonderful old photographs of teams and individual players, of a type rarely seen elsewhere. From the photos we see that the author seems to have had a strong resemblance to the recent player Chris Chambliss, which I mention just to help give a visual image of him.

Perhaps the Hall of Fame's selection committee gave Sol White some extra credit for his writing. If so, it was well deserved. Thank you, Cooperstown, for helping to bring this book back into view.

I have many cookbooks and this is probably the one I cook out of the most. It has a great variety of recipes (try the Snappy Cheese Waffers or Carrot Pineapple Bread) and isn't just full of "Southern Fare". I highly recommened buying this one for yourself.

I've had my copy for several years. It has been used time and time again. I've not tried a bad recipe yet. My children enjoy the food, especially the poppy seed chicken. Another favorite is the plantation rice. There are too many fabulous recipes to list them all. Get your own copy, you will NOT be sorry.

This cookbook is fantastic! Because it is theme based, it is easy to use and makes party planning a snap all year round. There are many delicious recipes that include gift ideas, too. The book is beautiful, fun to browse, and leaves you with some mouth-watering ideas. The recipes are easy to prepare, and reflect the style of the whole south, not just Georgia. This cookbook makes a great gift!

I have the first edition of this book, which I have used for many years. It has some of my all-time favorite recipes (Country Captain, Apple Torte, Helen Mary's Chicken, Shrimp Dip just to name a few). These recipes were well-tested prior to the publication, and I have never found an error in the ingredient list or instructions. There are recipes for every occasion, and every one I have tried has been great. I recently bought one for my thirty-year-old son who has become interested in cooking. When I gave it to him, he laughed and said, "Oh, yes, I recognize this!" due to the many times I used it when he was growing up. This is a great addition to your collection or a great gift for anyone on your list!

I have been using this book since my Missippi Magnolia mother gave me a copy when it first came out. There's not a bad recipe in it. Even the Crispy Chicken Cassarole, which my children called "glop" is good. In fact, I'm making the Strawberries Romanoff for a get-together tomorrow night. My copy has just worn out, therefore I'm ordering a new one, make it two, one for my new daughter-in-law in NJ.

The recipes in this book are wonderful! There are recipes from Bed & Breakfasts in KY, beautiful photographs of KY, menu samples for planning gatherings, and lots of history to read. The praline cookies are out of this world, as is the swirled pecan pound cake! My husband loved the grilled sirlion in Bourbon Marinade, and I loved the corn chowder and the blueberry citrus cake. This is a great junior league cookbook - both entertaining to read and great to cook by!

If it's information about any Minor League baseball player you want this book is by far the best source available. A must buy.

The best book available on evaluating minor-leaguers!
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-21
If you are in a "keeper" rotisserie baseball league that allows for the drafting of prospects, then this book is a must. I buy it every year, and believe me, it always pays for itself when I finish near the top of my league, in part due to players that I drafted when they were just reaching AA ball. An example: By now many people have heard of this year's favorite for AL rookie of the year, 3b Eric Chavez of Oakland. But how many people knew who he was before last season? Well, if you read this book, then you knew he was an excellent prospect, younger then most of his peers, with the potential to be a star. I drafted him in my league's reserve draft, and I expect I will be reaping the benefits for the next three or four years. It was the same with Ben Grieve the year before. The other great thing about this book is you will probably learn some things about evaluating minor-leaguers that you didn't know before, such as the importance of strike-zone judgement for young hitters(reflected in K/BB ratio). After reading this book, you will be better equipped to make your own judgements about prospects during the middle of the season, which will come in handy when making trade decisions. So trust me, when the '99 version of this book comes out, buy it. You'll be glad you did.

An absolute necessity to researching the minor leagues

I gave Bill James' '98 Minor League Handbook a 10 because I couldn't survive without it. It includes every relevant stat, plus extras, for EVERY player from AAA through to Rookie ball. This book also contains comparisons of different minor leagues (eg. hitters league vs. pitchers league) and Bill James' own projected major league stats for several prospects. I play in a fantasy league that uses minor leaguers at all four levels, and I would be lost without this easy reference guide!

It's almost impossible to find all the stats on all the minor leaguers to find the up-and-coming stars. This book solves that problem. Career stats of all AA and AAA players, and individual listings of all A players. A great way to keep track of your teams' minor leaguers progress.

Dothan Service League along with Wimmer Publishing has provided and excellent cookbook for the "ordinary cook" to present "extraordinary food". I would recommend that this book be a must for every kitchen, from the new bride to the great-grandmother who loves to cook. Many aspects of this cookbook separate it from others community or Jr. League books because it contains the must know "basics" of cooking such as the volume of common baking pans and measures and equivalents. Basing the chapters of the book on actual Sterling silver such as Strausborg(my wife's pattern), Old Master or Chantilly, this book includes beautiful pictures of the silver as well as how to care for it. The chapter Eloquence Extras also includes such simple things (or are they really simple) as making coffe in quantities of up to 100 servings, simple syrup for sweet tea, menu suggestions to include a Silver Anniversary Celebration for 50-75 guests along with favorites such as noodle kugel, tabbouleh, stuffed cabbage and mahmool (difficult to find these in a uniquely southern book). Buffet layouts, table settings, napkin folding and care of linen are also unique. I highly recommend this cookbook for everyone who spends any time in the kitchen.
