I've been waiting YEARS for this book to get reprinted. Like other Junior League cookbooks from across the country, each recipe has been tested (and tested) so you know they're good.

Not only do you get fantastic recipes that you know will be a hit at your next party or family gathering, you're also helping further the cause of an organization that has done amazing work in the community.

This book is fantastic. Not only are the recipes delicious, but beautifully illustrated and presented in the book. However, I just priced the book locally and found it $3-5 cheaper than Amazon.com

An excellent mystery for the Radio Amateur.

This was the first mystery I've read that revolved around Amateur Radio. Walker Thompkins had a wonderful flair for writing "easy to read and hard to put down" stories. The book gives enough background so that you have the chance to get to know the characters in the story. I find the main character, Tommy Rockford, to retain all the qualities of the young man you are meant to believe he is. The entire story had enough factual information that I was actually able to visit the area where the mystery takes place and see some of the landmarks mentioned. Although a bit far-fetched for the adult reader, there is enough of the childhood fantasy to make the story downright believable for the younger audience. The clues, the chase and even the last minute conversion of one of the bad guys to good guys reminds you of the movies where the audience stands and cheers at the end. This is a "happy ending" type of story that is all too rare nowdays. Although no H.G. Wells, Walker Thompkins was a gifted author with the vivid imagination that kept his audience until the end. If you began your interest in Amateur Radio as a youngster, this book is definitely for you.

Excellent resource for Amateur Radio and Mystery fans.

Satchel Paige is an enigmatic figure in american histroy. Mention his name, people inevitably think of the negro leagues,or thta terrible bingo long movie. In fact, Paige was ,in many repects, the first modern ballplayer. He played for a percentage of the gate, would only pitch a couple of innings in these contests, had no compuction about jumping from team to team{or country to country}The minstel show, stephifetchit aura that he calculated with the all too eager white press was, of course, a huge ruse. He was a sometimes bitter man{quite understandably so}He knew, instinctively, that he was the best pitcher in the world{although, curiosly, his peers voted Smokey Joe williams better in a 1950 vote in the Pittsburgh Courrier} He despsed the Jim Crow laws, and what he had to do to get around them. HIs civil rights stands were taken in the 20's 30's and 40's, when such things often meant death. He pitched for what might have been the greatest team of all time{the Pittsburgh crawfords of the early 30's] Dimaggio called him ethe toughest pitcher he ever hit against. All of these nuggets are in this book. Mr. Ribowsky did a fine job here. Paige is a figure who should be celebrated for what he was:an american original,a species often sighted but rarely seen. A wonderful book!

Demi-God

After reading this book, I am utterly convinced that Satchel Paige is as much of a baseball legend as a Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth. This book not only entertains but it fascinates, so much that I would'nt be suprised if someone mistook this biography for a peice of baseball folklore or a non fictitious work designed to capture the imaginations of baseball fans. This book portrays the life of Robert Leroy Satchel Paige in a most interesting way. In some cases he stands biggerthan life portrayed as a demi-god in the face of the gods of Major League Baseball and in some cases his mortality is revealed in the very midst of his immortality, and this is what makes this portrayal so unique.

Steps Toward the Distributive State
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-02
Hilaire Belloc wrote three excellent books setting forth his theory of economics, distributivsm. His first, in order of publication, was "The Servile State". In that book, published in 1912, Belloc argued that the distributive state, characterized by widespread ownership of property was the natural and proper political economy for man. But he argued that capitalism would tend toward a return to the Servile state, a state based on servitude. And, in the decades following 1912, this certainly took place throughout the world.

Belloc's "The Servile State" was well received. But he realized that there was a terrible lack of comprehension of economic issues in the reading public when his first work on economics was published. Therefore, he wrote "Economics for Helen" as a needed corrective.

With these two books in print, some criticized Belloc, and his colleague, G.K. Chesterton, for setting forth a doctrine that, though certainly ethically appealing was void of a practical program. Belloc's "An Essay on the Restoration of Property" and Chesterton's "Outline of Sanity" were the responses to this criticism.

This work is short, but brimming with wisdom. Belloc argues most persuasively of the importance, and even the urgency of a return to distributivism, the natural state of man. And he is even good enough to provide us with a workable approach to get there from here. The book is exellent, important, and well worth reading. God bless.

Towards a Restoration of Property.

_An Essay on the Restoration of Property_ by Roman Catholic writer Hilaire Belloc, reprinted by IHS Press, is an essay which outlines Belloc's distributist scheme to restore widespread ownership of private property. As explained in a previous book _The Servile State_, Belloc contrasts three separate forms society may come to take: that of the servile state, that of communism, and that of the proprietary state (or distributism). Belloc explains this as follows: "There is a third form of society, and it is the only one in which sufficiency and security can be combined with freedom, and that form is a society in which property is well distributed and so large a proportion of families in the state severally OWN and therefore control the means of production as to determine the general tone of society; making it neither Capitalist nor Communist, but Proprietary." Distributism arose as a response to the excesses of industrial capitalism in which many families had been ruined, and the vast majority of the population was reduced to the level of wage slaves. In contradistinction to communism, distributism allowed for the maintenance of private property (communism basically reducing all individuals to the status of slaves to the state). In the Middle Ages, the serfs were at least allowed to own the means of production and made use of them through a guild system. With the breakdown of medieval society and the decline of Christendom, property was seized by the capitalist class. Belloc makes the analogy that it is necessary to achieve a restoration of property in the same manner as it is necessary to achieve a re-afforestation of barren land. In order to do this, Belloc offers several proposals, including the return to a guild system as well a system of taxation on large businesses which operate at the expense of the small businessman. Belloc's theories along with those of his fellow writer G. K. Chesterton, both published in the periodical _The New Age_ by Alfred Richard Orage, continued in the line of Catholic social teachings which arose as a response to the excesses of industrial capitalism and the dangers of communism in the beginning of the modern era.

One of the great tragedies of the last decades is that Ann Saltenberger's groundbreaking book didn't recieve wider attention when it was originally released. However, that doesn't make her research or her observations any less valid today. Written with her gentle, there-but-for-the-grace-of-God-go-I perspective, Every Woman puts a human face on the bland statistics on abortion complications. Meticulously documented, Saltenberger draws on medical journal accounts of abortion injuries and deaths, placing them in the perspective of women's lives. A must read.

This is one of the greatest books I have ever read. I just could not put it down. It reminded me of "Catcher In The Rye" however I thought it was even better. It was exciting, sad, funny,it had everything. With all the great reviews I have seen on this book, I can't imagine that I have not heard about this character or this author. This character, I believe, will join all the other great American characters in literature.

This is one of the greatest books I've ever read.

This is an American tragedy. It is truly one of the greatest books I've ever read. The writing is so rich and so funny, it reminds one of "Catcher In The Rye" only I feel it is even better. The whole time I kept wondering if a movie is going to be made about this, because I believe this character, Darrel Skaitts, will be remembered with all the great characters in literature. It was one of the great reading pleasures of my life...
