I first saw this book and thought, okay, well, it's about some little Canadian hockey players in the eighties, that's weird. But having never played hockey nor lived in Canada or the eighties, I thought, well, I'll give it a try. And I loved it. Stephen Galloway's first novel is a remarkable story of two boys growing up together with a common love. The characters were wonderfully quirky. I've read this book about 3 or 4 times and I cry every time. It would make a beautiful movie as well.

A good canadian book! Finally!

If you like Hockey you'll love this book. If you don't like hockey you'll love this book. The book has relationships, between family, friends, and beaus. A wonderful, outstanding read.

Finnie Walsh in my opinion was an eye opening experience it is by far the best book I have ever read and everything about it made me feel more interested. There is not a single bad thing I could say about it! The characters alone made the book, how you understood how they felt at diferent times, how they were perfectly described! This book made me laugh, cry and made me feel emotions that have never occured before in my mind! I couldn't put it down and I will continue to read it over and over again because everytime I am sure that I will recieve more and more happiness sadness and information from the text! I am getting it for everyone for Christmas and I hope that everyone will enjoy this story as much as I did!

I picked up this book mainly because of my job working with high school teachers and students and ended up reading parts of it out loud to my own kids during a car trip. My 12 year old son was hooked, he read the book, then I finished it. It was amazing to have that 'secret book conversation' with my son. I/we both loved the book.

A Spanky Read!

Are you looking for a spanky good read? Look no further than this sly little Canadian book about a couple of kids living in the middle of the province of British Columbia who play hockey. This book is a swift, delicious thing that has a devilish way of not letting you free of it. You'll want to read it until you arrive at the last page--it is, in the classical sense of the hyphenated word, a "page-turner". I loved it. It was touching, heartfelt, and uncommon. A novel with an elegant plot, developed synchronously with its characters' motivations. Galloway is a secret talent ready to explode on the scene.

Mario Lemieux: The Final Period is a very nice book, mainly made up of photos of "Le Magnifique". The book has few words, but countless wonderful photographs. It features many game-action photos of Mario during his years as a Pittsburg Penguin, as well as personal photos of him and his family, and even hockey action photos of Mario before his NHL playing days. A must have for a Mario Lemieux fan.

This book is the best book I've ever read on an athlete. It gives plenty of information throughout his career and really shows you what a class act Mario is. Not only is it detailed well, but the pictures are awesome. If you doubt Mario as being one of the best athletes out there, read this book. You'll see why he earned the name Super Mario.

I like to call this book an "Adult picture book" because of the easy read and scrapbook of great pictures. I only wish it was written a few years later so Mario could tell us about his plans to save the Pittsburgh Penguins. This is one athlete that has never been arrested, has never done drugs, has been happily married to his wife (and he has only had one wife), and he's not going to go bankrupt anytime soon. Hats off to a great athlete and an awesome man.

This book is great! Steve Yzerman has been the heart and soul of the Detroit Red Wings for so long. It's nice to finally get the chance to learn all about him. Some of us were just 9 years old when he came to the Wings and don't remember how small, akward, and young he was. Also, great pictures! But, one warning, the book was written before the 96-97 season so you won't see a Stanley Cup chapter in it and you'll hear lots of mentions of how Stevie still hasn't raised the chalice.

He has done everything for this team and city, he has given us his heart, and in return we give him ours. He has captured our hearts and through this boook you can get an indepth look at the making of a SUPERSTAR!

I highly reccomend this book to any fan of the Red Wings and their Captain. Some parts will make you smile while other parts will make you teary-eyed, but all of it will make you very proud to be a Red Wings fan. And if you're not already a fan, this book just might make you into one. If you think all modern athletes are selfish and just in it for the money, this book will show you that there are still exceptions. Unfortunately, it was published before the Wings won their latest Cups, so you can't read about that in here, but that just makes you realize how special it is to win the Cup.

Teenage Life
Yours Truly Skye O'shea by Meagan Shull is a book about a young teenager. Skye just started [...]. She is trying to juggle sports, boys, and school all at the same time. When things get tough she writes to her favorite hockey player. She gives Skye helpful advice. I would recommend it to [...] girls and up.
Skye loves playing hockey but she is stuck in the shadow of her sisters legacy. She is trying to make the Ithaca 15U girls hockey team. Mean while, she starts to fail math, so her dad gets a touter. Then she meets Ashton, she thinks he is the most sweetest nicest boy she has ever met. Everyday after school they would walk to the library together. Everything was going good, maybe possibly, he liked her? But you never know what could happen! You will just have to read the book and see!
To sum it all up this book is truly a good book and teenage girls will love it , just like I do.

Yours Truly, Skye O' Shea is great book. Megan Shull writes so great that everyone can relate to it. With the funny parts and the sad you can find yourself feeling like Skye.
Skye has the same personality as me. Funny, loves hockey and wants to be great. I would do the same thing as her when she tries out for the hockey team, be the first out to show everyone, I'm serious. I would not want sisters like her though. I would want nice sisters that actually care about what happens to me. But I'm luckier the Skye because my parents are always there for me.
I think everyone should read this book because like I said, you can relate to how she is feeling. At some point in your life you've done the same thing or felt the same way. If you ever get a chance to read, you should. You'll never be able to put it down once you start!

Shortly after Skye enters middle school, she feels overwhelmed by her homework, her first crush, and her afterschool sports. Skye worries that she'll never be as skilled or as smart as her older sisters, twins Shannon and Shelby. At home, they always make Skye feel as though it's two against one. On the ice, all three girls excel at hockey. Even after Skye makes the big team, she thinks she has push herself even more in order to prove her worth.

Yours Truly, Skye O'Shea is just the beginning. Make sure that you read Skye's the Limit next and find out what happens when Skye goes to an outdoor summer camp. After you read these books, I bet that you, like me, will be wishing there were more Skye stories!

Overall rating= 3.625 stars, which I rounded up to 4 stars. Here's why:

Five stars to author Valerie J. Wood for having the courage to write about the darker side of professional sports--substance abuse: alcohol, cocaine, pain-killers and steriods.

Four stars for her characterization of Cole Bowman, the tortured "enforcer" of the title. One messed up guy, but doing what he's doing to stay in the game even though it's killing him physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Three and a half stars for the general plot, and associated subplots, eg Cole's assorted girlfriends and relationship with his father.

Two stars for the quality of the writing. The dialogue, in particular, was cumbersome at times, and the overall effort came across as a draft needing one more revision.

I would like to have given this book a solid 4 or 5 stars overall, instead of the 3.625 average, if only because there are so few adult fiction books about hockey(aside from the Rachel Gibson and Deirdre Martin romance novels). Still it is a credible effort from author Wood.

Reviews, press releases and more information is available on my website for Enforcer, as well as the Official Website for Link Gaetz. Please Google "Link Gaetz Official" and the site should show up on the top the search list.

In addition to being a sports, and hockey especially, fan for all my life, 4 years as a hockey photojournalist in the ECHL and AHL provided me the background for writing Enforcer. I interviewed players for a monthly magazine, and had an enviable opportunity for a glimpse behind the scenes. I got whacked in the ribs with a puck during a Bandits practice at Piney Orchard, by Jason Marshall, who was so terribly, terribly apologetic and appalled that this had happened. He signed the puck for me: "Sorry!" My acquaintance with the legendary Link Gaetz certainly kept up my interest in the role players, particularly the team's enforcer.

My next novel is underway, with a different sports-themed background.

I found it hard to put this book down. There is plenty of exciting hockey action, but the story is most captivating off the ice, where the title character's chemical, physical and emotional problems threaten to push him to the breaking point. The book illuminates the mindset of a hockey "goon," and the pressures that are unique to his profession. The author does a great job of describing the enforcer's complex relationships with his coach, his teammates, his girlfriends, and his father.

Hockey fans will enjoy the violent action on the ice, but the strong human drama should appeal to everyone.

From the beginning of the NHL's most succsful expansion team to the 2 Stanley Cups in the mid-70s to the 35 game unbeaten streak in 1980 to the sad death of star goalie Pelle Lindbergh to the firing of Bob Clarke in 1990 to the long story of the Eric Lindros trade to the trade for John LeClair and Eric Desjardins in 1995. The book also includes a brief story of the 1996-97 season, the first one at the Core States (now First Union)Center. This book is the best Flyers book around and is my favorite.

There is a scene in the beginning of the movie ANCHORMAN where Ron Burgundy says to his would-be conquest "You may not know this, but in this town I am really somebody."

In the 1960's, in the original six NHL, and on Chicago's West Side, Glenn Hall was really somebody. All the Black Hawks were. Glenn Hall filled out a line-up that was as charismatic as any on ice.

Hockey was a different appeal at that time. Jacque Plante first introduced the goalie face mask, and Glenn Hall was one of the very last to embrace it.

It wasn't until Bill Masterson of the Minnesota North Stars passed away after getting checked along the boards that players wore helmets. The game was more intimate. Local TV stations brought the product into the home, and because the players did not wear helmets, fans knew what players looked like.

Because there were only six teams in the league, we would see all the players many times in a season. As a boy, I could recite player numbers, goals, assists, and even penalty minutes of almost any player in the league. There were less than 100 players!

Glenn Hall had some quirks. He would vomit before each start. It was his ritual. But he pioneered the butterfly technique of goalkeeping, which is a standard today.

He was a workhorse, and one in a long line of great Black Hawk goalies.

The author revisits Hall, now in his 70's, and and gives him the due respect of an idol. Hall proves to be a worthy idol, being a down to earth and decent family man.

He also takes us through his life and times in the NHL, with the Red Wings, Black Hawks, and finally and most satisfying to Hall, winding his career down with the Blues.

In my eyes, the early and mid 1960's were the Golden Age of hockey. Hall was a worthy standard bearer. Was he the greatest goalie of all-time? Fans of Sawchuck, Esposito, Hasek, Roy, and Brodeur all have good arguments. The author makes his case for Hall, and I am not prone to disagree.

I enjoyed the book, for its simplicity, for the passion the author has for the subject, and for my own great memories of those great Black Hawk teams, and Hall himself.

For the Baby Boomer Hockey fan, two thumbs up.

the real #1 all-time netminder

Review Date: 2004-12-06
The author is basically a fan of Hall rather than a bitter journalist and because of this he gets it right. I was most interested in Hall's days sharing the nets with Jacques Plante in St. Louis and it shows how Hall basically helped turn St. Louis into the NHL's best new market back in 1967. Hall also comes across as no dummy and a very honorable teammate and man.

It's really great that when his story was told, it was told by someone who understands that Hall not Sawchuk, Roy, Plante, Hasek or Tretiak is hockey's greatest goalie.

The only points he missed were no action shots inside showing Hall's famous V, or butterfly, style that truly revolutionized goaltending (sorry, Patrick Roy, but it wasn't you) and he kept calling his "glovehand" his "catch glove" which I have never heard in all the years I've played or watched hockey.

This is a good book for hockey enthusiasts. Coach-Tom Adrahtas
traces Mr. Goalie's rise to stardom with a series of stories
and centerfold pictures. The height of the star's success
is the Stanley Cup earned in 1961. The author captures the
enthusiasm of the croud during the cheering in the St. Louis
arena. In addition, the author relates Hall's "Jack Dent Award"
for an MVP on the Windsor Spitfires. The NHL doors opened for
him when he arrived at the Red Wing Camp. The factual content
of Hall's career is conveyed at major juncture points by
the author. The book is a worthy investment for sports buffs.

This book is must reading for goalies, for St. Louis Blues fans, for Chicago Blackhawk and Detroit Red Wings fans, for NHL fans, for "Original Six" fans, for anyone who loves hockey today and wants to get a sense of the history of the game, and of course of the great Glenn Hall's place in that history. Tom "Chico" Adrahtas brings Hall's phenomenal career to life with passion and clarity. Whether it's the "slow-motion" detail with which Adrahtas describes some of Hall's career highlights, or some cutting and lucid insight into the mind and life of one of the best hockey players of all time, you cannot help but be drawn in. Adrahtas states up front that he intends to prove that Mr. Goalie was the greatest goaltender of all time, and then with a refreshingly unabashed dosage of heroe worship, he proceeds to do just that. And he does it not only with the cold, hard statistics that bear out Hall's greatness (e.g. his "impossible" 502 consecutive games in the NHL, the first "expansion" team player in the Hockey Hall of Fame), but perhaps more importantly by getting to the core of his character. Adrahtas, himself a goalie and a teacher of goalies, develops impressively throughout the book how goaltending is essentially a "character" position, what he calls "the most mentally demanding of all positions in sport." And while doing so he succeeds in convincing the reader that Glenn Hall's character is what sets him apart from, and elevates him above, the likes of Jacques Plante and Terry Sawchuk, his closest contemporary peers, and also apart from and above the best goalies of the modern era. This book is marvelous reading, a heartfelt tribute to a wonderful man who was surely the greatest goaltender of all time: Glenn Hall, Mr. Goalie.

A must read for goaltenders

Everyone who has ever donned the pads and has even the slightest sense of hockey history has waited for someone to tell the amazing story of one of the creases greatest denziens. Glenn Hall's amazing accomplishments on the rink have been enshirened in sport's almanacs and stat books for all to see, but no one has ever been able to bring his personal story to light. No one until Tom Adrahtas.

Mr. Adrahtas tells the story masterfully, skillfully inserting personal quips and candid comments from the people who knew Hall best, while narrating the career of this Hall-of-Fame goaltender. In addition to this unusual but highly entertaining style of sports biography, Mr. Adrahtas goes a step further and includes his own personal essays and thoughts on goaltending and growing up around the game of hockey. Normally, it is not recommended that an author try to add to an already amazing story, but Mr. Adrahtas pulls it off beautifully. Far from detracting from the subject matter, Mr. Adrahtas' sidebars are enlightening and essential for appreciating the authors passion for the game. What's more they are essential to understanding what drove great goaltenders like Glenn Hall.

In the end, it was hard to tell which was more enriching; Glenn Hall's life story or Tom Adrahtas' passion for goaltending. In either case, no goalie can afford to miss this book.

Hockey Days is a top of the line "feel-good" book for any hockey lover. Even if you're not into hockey you will enjoy the heartfelt tale that resonates love & laughter for fathers and sons.

This tale brought back memories of childhood friends and stories I have shared with my daughter about my childhood sports memories.

It's a great book to share with your children and it will get them interested in hockey too. It also tells a warm story of a father and son who relive the father's "glory days" and lead the son to believe his father is "pretty cool" after all.

I highly recommend this book to any and all. Hockey fan or not, you'll Love "Hockey Days".
