My son borrowed the book from a friend of his and I ended up having to buy our own copy. The 'off ice lessons' made both my sons think about what they were doing with their lives. The book is written with the kids in mind and it deals with the everyday challenges that they face in any sport. I have to admit that I really enjoyed reading the book myself. It was fast paced but definitely got the author's points across. I wish there were more books like this one out there that made learning life's lessons a little easier.

This is the best guide to goaltending I have ever read! I often find myself refering to this book in practice sessions as well as in games. Ian Young expalins each and every situation with detail, so as not to leave the reader guessing. Not only does this book provide solid instruction, but it also focuses on the mental aspect of the game, a definite key to minding the twine. Young's references to his playing days makes the instruction that more understandable. A definite plus! Every goaltender should pick up a copy of LORDS OF THE RINK today!

Mark Messier (Ice Hockey Legends) is a suprisingly informative book that takes an in-depth look at the career of one of sports must decorated champions. From his days in Edmonton, were Messier won 5 Stanley Cups, to his Stanley Cup season as a New York Ranger this book is a wonderful read!
One of the must exciting aspects of the book, are the actually quotes from Messier himself. It really adds to the diversity of the book and shows the type of character & leadership that Messier is so famous for. As for the pictures themselfs, I very impressed! They are black & white, but that does not diminish the book in anyway and there are some great shots of Messier from his earlier days as an Oiler.
Bottom line. Get the the book, it truely is a great read! Messier is without question one of the all time great leaders and champions of any sport!

***
When Carrier's Montreal Canadiens hockey sweater wears out, his mother writes to Eaton's to order a new one. Unfortunately, the company ships a sweater from the Canadiens' bitter rivals, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Carrier does not want to wear the new sweater, but his mother refuses to let him wear the old worn out sweater, and does not want to return the new sweater for fear of offending Mr. Eaton and it fits so well, unaware that the company would have been happy to exchange it. As a result, he is forced to wear the Leafs sweater to his hockey game, where all the other players on the ice are wearing Canadiens sweaters.
The story is widely considered an allegory for the linguistic and cultural tensions between anglophone and francophone Canadians, and an essential classic of Canadian literature. An excerpt from the story is now also commemorated in both official languages of Canada on the back of the Canadian five-dollar bill.
