Animals Books

I have a couple of paperback first aid books for dogs but I wanted something more comprehensive. We live in a rural area so a quick trip to the vet not possible. This does not take the place of seeing a vet when necessary, but the book gives easy to understand answers for many everyday problems and well organized.

Very helpful book, easy to use, full of information about different dog diseases and ailments. I highly recommend this book hand in hand with:
The First Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats (Prevention Pets) These books should be in every dog owners' home.

This is a excellant Book for any Dog Owner. Has lots of information that is useful.

Very concise and to the point. Great index in the front of the book to help quickly identify and find the dogs ailment. Very detailed and has a lot of incredibly useful information. A must-have for every dog owner.

Easy to use, good info, extremely helpful in deciding how quickly to get to the vet.

When Purple House Press reprinted this book, I recalled it as one of the memorable reads of my childhood, but for the life of me I could not remember why. I remembered the basic outlines of the story, but they didn't seem to add up to something that would have stuck in my memory so. (Since I never owned it, I had never reread it.) However, trusting that there must have been SOME good reason, I went ahead and purchased it. Now at long last I finally know why it stuck in the back of my mind for all those years:

The Phoenix.

David is a nice enough boy, easy to identify with, but in the Phoenix Mr. Ormondroyd has given us one of the most memorable characters in all of children's literature. Wise and all-knowing, but not quite as wise and all-knowing as he thinks he is, he exudes an exquisite sense of pomp and dignity... right before he trips over a windowsill and pratfalls into the bushes below or traps himself in his own snare or nearly electrocutes himself demonstrating his (less than complete) knowledge of electricity. A true rock of courage, unless something frightens him, he can be counted on to fully concentrate on the problem at hand, unless he is distracted by something...

like cookies.

I would love to know the people in Mr. Ormondroyd's life who inspired this character!

A surprisingly evil Scientist rounds out the major characters in this story of a boy receiving an unconventional education that will remind the reader a bit of Harry Potter's early education and an unforgettable ending.

Not to be missed. I am now greatly looking forward to reading his Time at the Top.

I read this book as a child and wanted to share it with my grandchildren.

I loved this book when I was a junior high teen, and at 57 I find I love it still. I have chortled for 40+ years over the mental image of the Irish Wail (tied up in a cardboard box, sealed with a bit of wax)voraciously devouring cabbages and growing in size, volume, and, of course, degrees of harmony.

THIS BOOK IS AN A++++ WINNER. Buy it for your kids, and if you can pry it away from them, read it for your own pleasure. Your life will change--for the better--after you meet David and the Phoenix.

Hallelujah!!! This book was in desperate need of a reprint. I just bought it, again, and let my children read it. With the original artwork included, this is a must have. People say if you like Harry Potter, but that doesn't do the book justice. This is the Holy Grail here. You will laugh and cry and fear for the characters and fall in love with them too. And sadly, you won't want the book to end, but it will. When will we see David and the Phoenix again?

I was thrilled to see this wonderful classic reissued. It is the result of a master writer with a fertile imagination. the intrigue that results as David tries to save the Phoenix from the scientist makes it hard for one to put the book down. Love the ending. I would also recommend "Moonspins and Widdershins" for those who love fastasy.

'Totoro' was the first thought that entered my mind when I saw this book. The author must have had some influence from the animation and nothing wrong with that. It is a beautifully water colored book and the familiar stories that I've heard as a child.

This book is amazing...not only are the pictures great, the story is one that you will want to read to your kids over and over. Zen Shorts has touching stories within an already creative and heartfelt book.

Great book for your preschooler and for you. The beautiful pictures capture the imagination, and the concepts introduced in the stories are springboards for conversation with your child (and can be just the right message for you after a long day).

As powerful for adults as well as children, Zen Shorts is a wonderful book that promotes deep critical thinking and discussion on topics such as family relationships, friendships, respect, disrespect, gratitude, greed, giving, taking, selfishness, selflessness, material attachments, material detachment, actions and consequences, luck, communication, anger, and togetherness. It is the kind of book that should be read and discussed in reading circles or at family time or bed time. For students who are beginning to study concepts in Eastern philosophy, this little book is approachable and the intended wisdom within one's grasp.

My favorite story portion of the book is "Uncle Ry and the Moon." My favorite illustration is the ones that depict the panda and Addy painting and eating.

Zen Shorts by Jon J. Muth is about Michel, Addy, Karl and a panda named Stillwater. Stillwater's umbrella lands in their backyard. He went to retrieve it before it would become a nuisance. This is how Addy, Michel and Karl met Stillwater. The day after Addy went to have tea with Stillwater. He was in a big yellow tent with a long red flag on it. He told her a story about his Uncle Ry and a robber. The day after Michel went to visit Stillwater. He was in a tree. He told him a story about two rabbits and luck. The day after Karl went to visit Stillwater. They went swimming. Stillwater told him a story about two monks and a puddle. This is how Addy, Michel, Karl and Stillwater became friends.

Stillwater is a good story teller. He told good understandable stories. Simple things in life reminded him of stories.

I like the way the author put stories in a story. The normal illustrations were colourful while the illustrations for the short story were cartoony.

Illustrates animals going to bed! I love books that show everyone is going to sleep!

What a wonderful story! The rhyming text is a pleasure to read, and the book progresses from day to night, making it a perfect bedtime story. I've read it so many times to my five year old twins that we now know it by heart. Get it!!!

My son loves to read books, but this one does not keep his attention. He likes Goodnight Moon, the Boyton Books, and others, but this doesn't keep his interest. I do like that it shows various animals and their noises.

This is one of my favorite books to read to my son. The prose is beautiful, concise, and profound. It's a very subtle book and takes some quiet time to truly appreciate it. The Big Red Barn is a picture of utopia; animals coexisting in peace, playing throughout the day, and then resting at night.

I was given this book as a gift just after my son was born. He is now coming up to three months and this is a book I just love to read to him. I am an animal lover myself and so I like the fact it is based around animals. I think the pictures are great and he is already taking a good look at them. The next step for me will be taking him to see the animals in person but until that happens we will live on the farm through this book. I have found it very pleasant to read as it has a basic rhythm to it, which means I don't mind repeating it which I am sure will help him with his development. I would recommend this book to many!!

This book is so innocent and unassuming. But inside its cover are so many things for your child to learn and wonder at. Illustrations are superb. I want to get out a flora and fauna encyclopedia so I can tell my son what each of these flowers, frogs and butterflies are. The detail is just astonishing. I wish to find more books like this. It can be read to a tiny baby or a 5 year old!

This book arrived very dry, which is good. Also, it doesn't smell bad like our other one did. Not that it smell good, mind you. I don't know if I'd say that it smells good, but it sure doesn't smell bad. Our last one smelled like cat pee and was wet. This one is way better. Besides, our boy loves this book.

this is a great book to teach aobut seasons and bring in new vocabulary and it is a great book because it is for toddlers but it is a board book so it can withstand younger siblings.

This book is delightful for children of 18 months to 3 years. The story is lyrical enough to capture their attention, the illustrations are delightful and Richard Scarry lives up to his excellent reputation as a chldren's author. It makes a great inexpensive gift.

The storyline is very simple, a good complement to illustrations that are colorful and detailed enough to hold the attention of very young children. We got this when my first son was about 9 mos. old; within the next year he had it memorized and could "read" it to us. My son is now 22 (YEARS old) and my husband and I can still recite the book . . .

Sheep in a Jeep tells the a rip-roaring story of a bunch of sheep who get into a lot of trouble with a jeep. These rhymes and more abound in Sheep in a Jeep.

The cute sing-song words to this book make it perfect for toddlers. It's short and sweet, so it can keep their attention. There are plenty of animals to capture the interests of little ones. And finally...it's short..did I mention that?

This is one of my little girl's favorite book and I don't mind reading it over and over again.

We got this book as a gift when my son was 2 years old. It's gone through two more kids and they all love it! We take it with us when we go for Jeep rides, too! We have "Sheep out to eat" and they don't like that as much as the Jeep one. It's a great book to have, especially if you own a Jeep!

This series is full of easy rhymes. It makes a great early reader, as well as a great read-aloud for a younger preschooler or toddler.

The sheep, in their jeep, have a run of rhyming problems, until they finally realize they're better off without it. Great fun, funny and cute.

I was first introduced to this book when a friend's toddler received it for Christmas. He loved it. That was 5 or 6 years ago. Recently we found it at the library and my boys loved it so much that we bought our own. My 2yo son loves it and even the 4yo still asks to read it. It's a keeper!

Sheep in a Jeep is a fun book using rhythmic wording. The pictures are humorous. My disappointment was with the small size of the board book. No where did it say the miniature dimensions of the book. I prefer board books that are in the larger format of 8x11.

I remembered this book from my childhood and ordered it in remembrance of my husband's grandfather whose last name was Ferdinand. It is a beautiful story and the illustrations are a perfect compliment to the text.

Ferdinand marches to the beat of his own drum. A great parable of being yourself, regardless of outside influences.

My mother read this to me as a little girl. I'm now 45. As I began to add books to the libraries of my nieces and nephews this was and still is the one book I consistently buy for them. Along with the gentle nature of the book in regards to Ferdinand's passive, gentle character, I love the illustrations. I'm also always looking for books such as this which can lead to discussions with children about the way to treat animals. In my family we learned and still our little ones learn the word gentle, gentle when dealing with animals and babies....I can imagine using the words gentle, gentle with our little ones discovery of a bull such as Ferdinand.

This is a must for my grandchildren. If it was good enough for my kids, it's good enough for theirs.

Ferdinand, Monroe Leaf's classic children's book, is a timeless story. It mesmerized my sons three decades ago and held the attention of my fourth grade students year after year. I always include it in any collection of books I purchase for a new baby. It's a delightful read-aloud for any child.

Bought this book for my wife for christmas. She heard the story on the news and really wanted to know the whole story.

The well-written book portrays a heart-warming story about friendship. Mzee's love and guidance, along with Owen's resilience, proves that Science can't always explain what brings species together. The book contains factual material, as partially told by the general manager of Haller Park, Dr. Paula Kahumbu. Photographer Peter Greste brings this story to life with his photos that capture all the main events leading to the remarkable friendship of Owen and Mzee. Further, they capture the amazing bond the two share. The pictures do a well job of telling the story. The vocabulary of the story is geared towards an average intermediate reading level, and can easily be modified to tend to a younger audience's level of understanding. Following the story are maps with facts about Kenya and Malindi, as well as facts on hippopotami and aldabra tortoises. The last section of the book also further discusses the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami. Lastly, this wonderful addition includes websites where teachers and parents can download discussion guides and take a virtual visit of Haller Park. This is a must for any parent and/or teacher to share with students of all ages.

The story of Mzee and Owen is a beautifully written story of two friends. The message of friendship and the bond of love shared between two souls makes this a must read for all ages.

I purchased this book after hearing something about their story. I believe it is intended to be a children's book, but I enjoyed the story and the pictures of the two together. It's a touching story of two misplaced creatures bonding together - gives you warm fuzzies. I pass it around to others who might enjoy reading it as a "pick me up". It is always returned with a smile.

No doubt about it - that's what this one is...

So here's what happens.

Heavy December rains sweep Owen and his happy hippo family down the Sabaki River in Kenya and into the Indian Ocean where, much to the chagrin of the occupants of the small coastal town of Malindi, they take up residence.

Before you can say hippopotamus, the tsunami of December 26, 2004 hits, and when things come back to normal, Owen is stranded by himself on a coral reef. The villagers, originally dismayed by the hippo clan, now work with courage and persistence to save the baby's life.

After being rescued Owen is transported to Haller Park, an animal sanctuary outside of Mombasa. Here he meets Mzee (Swahili for "wise old man") a 130 year old Aldabra tortoise.

They become friends, snuggle together, and soon are found to be inseparable.

While this is all quite heart warming, the eclectic pairing left me with an odd sense of dissonance. Mzee is exceptionally ugly, and the sight of a mammal and a cold blooded reptile snuggling together seems somewhat icky.

Nevertheless I'll give it four stars. For sure this is a book that kids will enjoy. And, if I give it anything less, my nephew just might clobber me...

This isn't one of the pigeon books where you talk back to the pigeon. Instead, the pigeon talks to the Special Guest Star - the Duckling!

My nieces (aged 5 and 2.5) can literally recite this one by heart. And they will! Oh, they will. They love every page of it, and if that's not a good recommendation, I don't know what is!

They even (especially) love the inside covers. On the front inside cover there's a lot of hot dogs, but on the *back* inside cover one of the hot dogs has been cut in half - just like the pigeon cuts his hot dog in half to share it with the duckling!

Mo Willems has done it again. This is a very fun book for small children. My kindergarten students love all of Mo Willems books but, this is one of their all time favorites.

This is one book kids of different ages love. My daughter bought this one for her daughter, she loved it .So she got it for my youngest granddaughter . She is 7 and she would not put it down. She read this book three times a day at least for weeks. She had so much fun with it . This is one for all ages .

Kindergarten kids and younger would get a kick out of this story. A great book to get all the kids laughing hysterically.

This is one of those books that tells a story with just the pictures. If you have a small child, you are 'explaining' the pictures and adding these words in that is all dialog. At 8pm, I don't want to make up a story around a book. I want to read a book to my kid.

Although the illustrations are cute, I still wish there was more narrative.

Mark's books are easy to read and offer the thoughts and insights of a true horseman. His methods are gentle and honor the horse. Delightful.

This is my favorite of Mark's books. Although I love them all. I have read all 5 and am waiting for more. I read them in 1-3 sittings, cannot put them down! I am starting to buy this book for friends and family, I think Mark's books should be a prerequisite for horse ownership! I have raised and trained horses for close to 30 years. I have read a lot, try to keep an open mind & keep learning. Anyway I have pretty much developed my way of doing things and had found in the past, by checking out more trainer's books that either I did not agree or they were for the "new to horses" person. I had read the reviews here on Mark's books, then just happened to find a couple Mark Rashid books used at a sale & thought okay, they're cheap, I'll try them! I could not put them down! Some things that Mark shares reinforce what I've learned myself, but I found lots to learn in these books too. We had an old cowboy/trainer/farrier/castrater/teeth floater/friend who lived around here for years. If I needed to learn anything about horses, I'd ask Sonny, the thing was Sonny never "gave" you the answer! He told you a story & let you learn the answer yourself! Mark's books remind me of that. Mark's books will follow you through your life. He offers the teachings of truly living well & with compassion in your daily life. 2 things always come into my head since reading his books . . . WHAT DOES MY HORSE THINK ABOUT THIS? and IS THIS REALLY WORTH WORRYING ABOUT? 90% of the time we worry about the little things that we don't need to. Mark's books are an AWESOME read for anyone!

Another good one from Mark. Makes you think of horses in a whole new way has you step into their world so to speak. A must read!

Mark has written a nice book, not clearly a manual or a How to.. book but a text full of experiences. It's not literature about horses but a book about different horses and experiences, giving clues about horsenalities and personalities. A fun and interesting book.

Quite simply, I love horses, and I loved this book.

What Mark writes about horses and humans gets to the heart of what life's all about. If I was the CEO of a big company, I'd bring this cowboy in to talk horse with my upper management, let them figure out why. I relate to his idea of quiet leadership.

I've since read three of Mark's other books. All of them have something unique to say, Mr. Rashid is a man with sharp prespective on life and a way with words.
