Sid is a favorite at our house! Even when my daughter is in a foul mood, by the end of Sid we're all laughing again. The pictures are extraordinarily expressive and the story is endearing. We've even taken to call one of our cats who likes to overeat Sid!

My kids and I both love this book. The art is pretty without being distracting. Sid is drawn very expressively, and as a real character, without being a talking animal. The message of sharing, openess, and flexibility are important and come in handy in our lives.

The book, Six-Dinner Sid (Aladdin Paperbacks, purchased in 2008) included an advertisement for Cheerios printed on the inside back cover of the book. So every time you read the last page of the book, your child will see an advertisement from a cereal company. No, thank you. We prefer not to have advertisements in our children's literature.

Sid likes six different kinds of dinners, being scratched six different ways, and he sleeps in six different beds. He's just that way!
And... when everyone talks to each other... everyone knows, so no one minds.
An awesome polyamory fable, great for kids and adults.

This gentle story, told in simple rhyme, shows animals in a stable getting ready for a special guest. The block-print art, rich in earth-tones, gives a humble and loving feel to the scene. Each animal does what it can to prepare the stable, and when Mary and Joseph arrive, the animals stand in hushed anticipation. The final page shows all the animals gathered around the new baby Jesus, saying, "Welcome, welcome to our house!" A perfect read-aloud for little ones.

This book is a favorite for my two pre-school-aged children. We read it year-round.
The rhymes of the tale are engaging. (I love the oft repeated line: "Someone, someone," says Mouse.)
My only quibble with the book is the art work. It is not to my taste, though I think that that is more a matter of personal preference than anything else.

I am SO SICK of this book. I have to read it over and over and over again all day long. My daughter (17 months) will pull it from the bottom of a pile of books and bring it to me to read. On the final page she pats the baby's face and says "Baby. Baby." It's a very sweet little book and worth getting; your child will love it.

My daughter brought this book home from her school library and both my husband and I were touched by this book so much that we ordered a copy for our family. This a great book for teaching the true meaning of friendship to all ages. I would recommend this book for anyone who works with children. It will be a tradition in our house for a long no matter what the season.

I loved this book but from the cover art to the copy there is a tone of sadness. I bought it for a niece who is particulalry sensitive and it bothered her from the beginning. While I stressed the 'happy ending' the cover art really held her captive but in a sad way. It is a beautifully illustrated book but just know the child you are buying for. She is 6 and capable of understanding the difference between a book and reality so I tried to make it a teaching moment. Sadness is a real emotion so we talked about it in the framework of how life can be sad but it also often works out just fine.

I love this book, because although it was designed for a younger reader (only about 160 pgs. with larger print and simple dialogue) it does not omit any goat raising information. Instead it presents even tougher concepts in goat raising in a simple and easy to read format - helpful for both younger AND (some of us) older readers! I read the whole thing in the matter of an afternoon, but came away feeling satisfied that this book answered my questions. The book is well organized, easy to understand, very informative, and even has pictures! A great buy for anyone interested in learning more about raising goats!

I originally became acquainted with this magical tale when my son checked it out from the public library about 20 years ago. Both of us fell in love with this wonderfully-told imaginative story, and each of us has gifted it to many young friends and family members over the years. It goes without saying that the illustrations, too, are a delight.

Every time people see Alexander they scream or chase him, but all he wants are a few crumbs. Willy, on the other hand, another mouse, is loved and cuddled and cared for. That's because Willy is a toy, a wind-up mouse.
Well, Willy (the toy) and Alexander (the real mouse) happen to meet and each tell about their lives: a happy one for Willy, a frightening and lonely one for Alexander.
Luckily, he thinks, Alexander finds that with the help of some magic from a lizard he, too, can become a happy and loved wind-up mouse. But just in time something shocking happens to make him change his mind about turning into another Willy: Something happens to Willy. (Suitable for preschool through the primary grades.)

This is indeed a holistic approach. I have been with horses for over forty years and I have read so many new ideas about our relationship with horses. It is an honest book of an honest man, concerned with the wellfare of horse and human. I am sad I have not read this book 30 years earlier (it was not published then). My horses would have deserved it and my relationship with them would have been all the better for it.

After reading several other books from trainers and horseman, I found Sam's book, wow! What a find. Sam has put into words what few other horseman can and in away that all will understand. Having worked with horses since he was a young man has given him wisdom to help both horse and man. His simple manner in which he uses in his book allows the reader to get the most from reading his book. I have learned more from his book than any other book, magazine or video I have reviewed. He has helped me to understand the horse form a perspective I never knew possible. This will be a book you will want to read over and over. This book has something for everyone that loves his or her horse. From the beginner to the advanced professional, you will learn a way of communicating that actually works. Communication that will open your eye to a new world for both horse and person, ENJOY!

I have always wanted horses since I was a small child, growing up with my Uncle's horses. There has always been a connection between me and horses. I just purchased two of the most beautiful Arabian horses, later in life. My little boy has been abused and is 4 years old and is in training. When I purchased him, you couldn't get close to him and put a halter on him, and now he follows me arround and wants to be right next to me. My little girl is 2 and has always been loved and is really sweet. I spent two weeks bonding with my little boy and we have such love and communication between us that he is a different horse and really trust me. I bought this book and realize that as a novice, I did the wrong thing of buying 2 green horses. I felt something when I saw them and knew that we were ment to be together. I will tell you that I could not put this book down until I finished it. I realized all the things I was doing wrong....and all the things that I was doing right. I love my horses so much and they know it as soon as they see me. I would really like to meet Sam someday and learn more from him. I highly reccommend this book to everyone. I know that I should of bought older, and trained horses, but the love I have for my beautiful babies grows everyday. I know I need to learn....and I belive in Sam's way of training. I know I will be alot more wiser in what I do now....but I have patience and hope I will be a good partner and companion to the two best horses in the world.

I had bought this book originally as a good all around read, but ended up needing a lot of its valuable information when I purchased a gelding at an auction. Something just made my hand go up, even though the horse reared in the ring. I thought I had brought home a mistake until I went back and started to re-read Mr. Powell's book. I even e-mailed him at his address for additional help. Needless to say, 18 months later, this horse is the friendliest, most willing-to-please horse in our pasture. The potential I saw him at the auction has come full circle thanks to the wisdom in Mr. Powell's book. Thanks Sam! This is a must read for all horse people!

I would recommend this book to anyone who has lost a beloved pet, or as a gift to someone who has. If you want to show you care without saying a word, give this book. In the privacy of their grief they will read this book and know that you understand what they are going through. Even more, they will know that many many people have come before us who have gone through the same hell.

There comes a time in every dog owner's life when you look down at the furball by your feet and come to the realization that this is no longer just your pet; this is your friend. Dogs surpass human beings in just about everything: from sense of smell to hearing, from loyalty to love. A dog's capacity to love is something profound; they want nothing more than to be accepted, to please you and to be loved in return. "Angel Pawprints" showcases some beautiful poems about this love which dogs have for centuries offered and received. Laurel E. Hunt edited some great pieces, including works by such famous poets as Rudyard Kipling and William Wordsworth. (My personal favorite is "So Long, Pal" by Ethel Blumann.)
One does not by any means have to have lost a canine companion to enjoy the works presented in this book. If you have ever loved a dog so selflessly, unconditionally, and faithfully, then all of these pet memorials will speak to you, even if you cannot comprehend the depth of the poets' pain. If you have lost a good friend in the past, this book could possibly be a fine method of therapy to help you feel better about everything. (It helped me when my friend of 12 years died.) "Angel Pawprints: Reflections on Loving and Losing a Canine Companion" is, in a nutshell, just a really great way of honoring your dog's memory and love. It may cause some tears but it'll get you through.

My kids' preschool teacher recommended this to me and now I rave about Nora Gaydos' "Now I'm Reading" level 1 and up series to other moms. Let me count the ways...
1) I credit this series with getting my kids to read sooner than they would have.
2) Stories are very short but engaging to little ones. They are very manageable for emerging readers and kids are so proud of themselves for having read "a book" when they are done.
3) Drawings are delightful!
4) Stickers that match the story characters add to the fun and motivation.
5) Author truly refrains from trying to stuff more than one new learning concept in each book. So many people try to do intro phonics but can't help themselves from putting in advanced sight words and several new concepts at once.

These books have cute, fun stories with simple words and interesting COLOR pictures! (I like Bob's books, but the pictures are little more than black and white stick figures.)The 10 books are very nicely contained in a larger holder. They can be taken out or left in while reading; this way the books don't get torn or lost. My daughter loves these books and is so proud to be able to read a whole story on her own!

I agree with all the rave reviews about how these books progress from basic to more advanced reading skills. I also appreciate the illustrations. I rarely buy a book for my children that is not beautifully illustrated, ala The Rainbabies by Laura Krauss Melmed and Jim Lamarche or Sophie's Masterpiece: A Spider's Tale by Eileen Spinelli and Jane Dyer. While not beautiful in a painterly manner, the illustrations by BB Sam are not at all garish and by far the best I've seen in any beginning reader.

My toddler loves these books. She can't get enough of them. Even though she isn't reading them herself, she loves it when we read them to her and she loves looking at the pictures. These books will be great for her when she starts reading herself!

It is so hard these days to find interesting books that focus on phonics AND child confidence that don't have an overwhelming number of undecodable words. This book is a treasure if you are looking for a program focusing on beginning phonics (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) and Consonant Blends and Sight Words in a format that your child will enjoy while building up confidence. Each soft cover book is about 5" by 5" and has about 10 easy reading pages that slowly builds up the sentences with each page, (e.g. A cat. A tan cat. A tan fat cat.) yet is still able to hold a story (e.g cat loses a race but his friends still clap for him). The books are Fat Cat, Hot Dog, Pig Jig, Rub-A-Dub Cub, Wet Legs, Crab Trap, Frog Cops, Fish Gift, Stuck Duck, and Elk Yelps. My daughter is so happy to be able to say she can read a book without help! It truly builds up their confidence and is exactly what reluctant beginning readers need. The set comes in a nice little hardcover case, easy for readers to carry around, and has individual see-through pockets to keep each book safe in or insert the back flaps to make one big book, and has a magnetic closure tab, to keep it all together and give kids that special-book/diary type of feel so they'll want to take it to bed. It also comes with a list of questions for kids, parents advice book and stickers. The illustrations are simple, funny and enjoyable. I am so happy I found this indispensable teaching tool! Highly recommended!

For a small, pamphlet like publication this handbook packs a surprising amount of information about bats and bat houses. It has several very detailed plans for bat houses and accompanying materials list that simplify the purchasing process. Very happy with this purchase.

My grand daughter's are anxious to get started building! I bought this and the Stokes Guide to Bats. They love the books. Easy to use and with a little help 8 & 10 years-old understand the blueprints.

Maybe I'm too sold on what's marketed as variety.
I agree with what other reviewers have said, that these are good bathouses and the instructions are easy to follow. I just wish there were a little more variety in terms of design.
The book, by the way, over and above the houses does have some reference information on bats including where to put the houses. That was helpful.
If you're into bats, and would like to make your own houses, this is the book I would recommend.

Lots of good information in here. This book went into detail that I'd never even thought about. Definitely worth a buy if you want a good house that will attract bats.

I was a bit annoyed to open the package from Amazon and see this glorified pamphlet inside. "There goes ten bucks!" I thought. Don't let the size fool you, though. When I opened the booklet and started flipping through, I saw that it really is an excellent guide. It is far superior to anything else I have seen on the subject. I have seen bat houses for sale in my area that do not come close to meeting the well researched guidelines described in this book. Worth buying, definitely. I just wanted to combat the mosquitos in my neighborhood -- now I will likely join the Bat Conservancy and build houses for any friends who ask.

The book I read was A Bear called Paddington, and it was very good. The author of A bear called Paddington was Michael Bond who has been writing children's books since 1995. A Bear called Paddington is a fantasy story.
A bear called Paddington has 8 stories in the book. First story...Mr. and Mrs. Brown find a bear who had came to America from darkest Prue. The train Stations name was Paddington so they named him Paddington. Paddington has no family so the Browns takes the bear to there house. Second story... Mr. and Mrs. Brown have 2 children, Judy and Jonathon, they really like Paddington. Paddington always has his hat o which actually saves his life. When Paddington was in the bath and forgot how to swim so he poured the water on the floor out of his hat. Third story... Paddington, Mrs. Brown ad Judy go underground somewhere, and o the way there, they lost all there money so as soon as they get there they don't have ay money for tickets. So all 3 of them looked for the money for the tickets. Fourth story Paddington, Judy ad Mrs. Brown go shopping and Paddington have never been on an elevator so he wants to go on one. They got off the elevator and Paddington hates it so much. Fifth story... On day a grocery man tells Paddington how to get paint off stuff. After hearing that, Paddington wanted to try, so he found an old and tried to erase it but it makes an even bigger mess. Sixth story... The whole family went to the theater. Paddington loves it so much that now he wants to be in show business. So he creeps I the actor's dressing room to find the main person, Sir Sealy. Sir Sealy gives Paddington a special part in the play. Seventh story... the whole family go's to the sea and Judy, Paddington and Jonathon enter a sad castle contest and one of them wins. Eighth story... Paddington gets a magic kit for his birthday in the end he vanished 2 thing's and broke one thing.
This book was one of my favorites, it was so good. One bad thing is that it was very easy to understand. I would recommend this book to third or fourth graders.

Paddington is very funny when he does little mistakes. Paddington is a very interesting character that is lovable to everyone. Whenever I'm bored I read it, usually, even though we have already read it. You should mainly buy it for your kids, but you should read it to them because adults like it as much as the kids do. I like all the Paddington books, but my favorite one is the first one. Paddington is a wonderful character and he is my most favorite on earth.

We LOVE this CD set! I bought it 2 years ago for my daughter to listen to for naps and bedtime, and now at age 5 she's STILL asking for it every night.
I like the fact that both CDs are over an hour long, she likes that there are several stories on each CD to keep her attention. The plots aren't too complicated for her to follow, but they do force her to pay attention and focus on the cd, which is key for naptime. :) Stephen Fry's voice is wonderfully soothing to listen to, and he does a great job of distinguishing between the various characters -- key for books on CD!
As she's gotten older Caroline has begun to appreciate some of the silliness that is Paddington, but the stories are nicely entertaining even without that element. We parents don't mind listening to Paddington in the car when we're on trips. All in all, I say this CD set is well worth this money, it's one that will really grow with you!!

A classic! I loved Paddington as a child and I'm thrilled to have this in our CD collection. (I'd even listen without the kids!). Stephen Fry reads the stories very well.
