Our family loves all the pigeon stories. The Puppy version is very cute and kids can relate to the pigeon's plea. However this story has not been as much fun to read as the other pigeon stories because it is less interactive. In Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, kids get to enthusiastically tell the pigeon "no!" on almost every page which is most of the fun. This story does not give kids as much of an opportunity to play disciplinarian--a big and unusual role for a preschooler.

This was our first Mo Willems book and my great grandchildren loved it!
Funny, well drawn, and contains a great lesson, too. We'll be adding to our Mo Willems library.

I mean, they just set such a high standard, really....
The thing is, my nieces don't find the jokes in this one that funny to start. I mean, they get them, but only once I kinda wink at them and highlight that "hey, that was just a joke", and it's not... that worth it. They request the earlier pigeon books much more often.
The ones at the end are easier for them, but by then the book is almost over.
Still a good book, just not as great as the others.

I was quite pleased with this book, especially the expanded edition, which includes information about his offspring. I wish it had more photos, but the photos that are there are choice. Wolfe did his research. And interesting read and a must have if you're a fan of Secretariat.

This book is great and chock full of beautiful, rich, and colorful photos; Secretariat almost looks real in some of them. It has just as much accurate information as Bill Nack's "The Making of a Champion," but doesn't go into the tedious detail of related bloodlines and the syndicate deal made for Secretariat. I found this book to be better than Nack's because of that, the pacing, and the gorgeous photos.

I bought this book as a Secretariat and general thoroughbred racing fan. I discovered it in a book store in St. Petersburg, FL a couple of years ago, and just recently purchased it for my very own through Amazon. At that time, I remember seeing it on the shelf and with wide-eyes, removing it to sit on the floor cross-legged and look at the beautiful array of photographs. I couldn't believe that a coffee table book had been put together about my favorite champion.
And that's still how I feel. If one is looking for photos and photos and more photos of this red legend, this book is the one to own. I am just now getting around to the text, as I have read two Secretariat biographies already, but that is also well written and captures major and interesting details about this horse's life.
Thank you Raymond G. Woolfe Jr. for composing a book that is worthy of our 1973 hero.

On Oct. 4, 1989 the evening news shows carried the story that Secretariat had been euthanized. I cried my heart out. Called in sick to work the next day. My personal hero had left us. The current generation of Barbaro-worshippers can't understand what it was like to watch The Red run. You knew you were watching history unfold, as much as when Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon. Secretariat lifted up an entire nation, kissed it and put it back down. We were sick of Vietnam, sick of Watergate, sick of being the trashcan the world kicks down the street. Secretariat, the most magnificent assemblage of bone, muscle, brain and heart walked out in front of us and said, "watch me." Simple and to the point. Bred in America. Homegrown and hardworking. And setting the gold standard for perfection. This book simply reminds everyone how he was and how he made us feel. Nearly 20 years later I still cry my heart out on October 4th. But I look at his photos and read the stories about him and I am grateful to have been a witness to something that defies description.

Tears of a Dragon is a great ending to a captivating series! You'll cry, and laugh, and cry some more. But is it really the end? Are all questions answered? Read it and find out, then move on to Oracles of Fire, to see if you questions are answered.

After three previous books, you might be thinking that Bryan Davis is about done. Hardly. The first three were only warm-up for Tears of a Dragon. It starts a bit slowly, but once you get going, look out! The pace picks up until it exceeds the speed at which the rest of the series moves.
The ending is satisfactory, while still leaving the story open for four more books, starting with Eye of the Oracle (Oracles of Fire). Wonderful!

This is a wonderful book for readers of all ages. Tears of a Dragon is the fourth book in the Dragons in Our Midst series. It's a great conclusion to the series. It is very well written and thought out, the plot is deliciously complex, and the characters are ones that you come to love. It's combination of fantasy, Arthurian legend, and the Bible make it a unique and fascinating tale! I recommend this book for all ages.

Stacey O'Brian is not a gifted writer, but once I accepted that fact and moved beyond it to the delightful story itself, I was enthralled. I have had a wide assortment of animals, including several birds. I currently am owned by a thirteen year old Maximilian Pionus parrot whose real name is Sweetheart but also goes by the moniker of "Mr. T" (testosterone) and who shares many of the traits that Wesley displayed over his nineteen years with Stacey. Sweetheart, like Wesley, does not willingly share his mate, me, as my husband can testify. This book will have great appeal to animal lovers, and once you move beyond the unsophisticated style (which improves somewhat as you progress further into the book), you will not only discover a most endearing tale but will also learn some very interesting facts about avian behavior.

Almost a year ago I lost my precious Dove (Heaven) and at times still find it difficult to explain to others what she meant to me. This book does exactly that. Not to mention helping to make more people aware how intelligent animals can be. Also, how they can change your life and help you grow spiritually. Stacy has honored Wesley and his gift to her by wriring this book. Stacy has helped me by talking about her grief and guilt and putting a perspective on it I needed to be reminded of as the anniverary of Heaven's passing on approaches. I know Wesley and Heaven are up there working together to help us humans become better people. I highly recommend this book for so many reasons, but mostly to increase our awareness and make us think of animals as equals.

On my daily walks, I now listen and look for owls and hoping I'll see another Wesley. You won't be disappointed with this story.

Bill Wallace writes this book as though it's real life. Once you start, you an hardly put it down!
Luke, a young city boy, is the son of divorced parents. he lives with his mom on his grandfather's farm. because his mom lost her job. Luke never wants to do anything at the farm because his mom made him leave all of his friends when they moved.
After a long summer, Luke befriends an old horse called Beauty. They share a special bond with late summer walks and secrets. But when a terrible accident happens, Luke does something that may break that bond.
This book is great for children and adults. It has adventure, suspense, and funny, laugh-out-loud moments, too. It shows that when you have a bond with a clase friend, keep it for it will become one of your greatest treasures. I give this book a four out of five star rating.

The best-known and best-loved of Robin McKinley's books is also one of the best of the fairy-tale retellings -- "Beauty," a more enlightened, fully-drawn version of "Beauty and the Beast." There's a depth and a richness to the story and characterizations, as well as a beauty of atmosphere and writing.
Beauty (real name is "Honour") is the ironically-named heroine of the story -- she isn't beautiful, but is very intelligent. She has two sisters, the beautiful Hope and Grace, and a benevolent, wealthy father. Then all their lives change suddenly: the ships their father owns are lost, and the money goes with them. One of the sisters marries a poor but worthy country lad, while the other lost her beloved fiancee who captained one of the ships. After selling their possessions the family moves to the countryside.
The father leaves on a trip -- and returns with a single rose, a gift for Beauty, which carries the price of either his life or his daughter. Beauty leaves to go live at the castle of the mysterious Beast, with only her plowhorse to accompany her. She arrives at a castle of invisible servants, magical books, friendly animals, and a melancholy Beast who asks her to marry him every evening...
There is nothing new in fairy tale retellings now, but when McKinley first wrote "Beauty," it was a relative rarity. And even now, few of them are as intelligently written and have such solid heroines. Rather than giving her story a contrived "twist," McKinley merely fleshes out the storyline and gives the characters personalities.
The writing is excellent; McKinley writes the more prosaic passages of cottage life and the surrounding friendly village, as well as the more dreamlike, fantastical scenes in the Beast's castle. Lots of atmosphere, either in the poor but warm surroundings of the house, or the eerie feel of the castle. The dialogue is nearly flawless: McKinley doesn't write ye-olde-formal prose, but the characters never sound -- or think -- like modern Americans.
Beauty is a great heroine -- brainy, kind, wry-humored, brave and strong. Though the "Beauty" element is discarded, it is done so with the apparent understanding that this "Beauty" has brains and guts rather than a pretty face. The Beast himself is a little more shadowy; we never get inside his head the way we do Beauty's, but then the book is hers, not his. Beauty's father and sisters are equally well-done, avoiding the cliches of nastiness in favor of being likable or haunted.
Robin McKinley's debut "Beauty" is still among the best-loved fairy-tale retellings. With the help of a gutsy, brainy heroine, it rises above a mere retelling and becomes THE retelling.

This book is a lovely retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I collect fairy tales and happened across this one several years ago. It is told in the first person. The writing is absolutely sure-handed and the characterization is beautiful. I have read most of the author's other books but none of them come close to the heights of storytelling she reaches in this novel. It drew me in from page one, and I was overcome with a rush of disappointment when I reached the end because there was no more.
This is also a great read-aloud book. It is too bad that it is out of print because I often loan my copy to friends. Fortunately all of them (so far) have returned it - with great praise. Everyone who is a lover of fairy tales should give this one a try.

My Down Syndrome daughter selected this book for my oldest grandson, and he loved it. He has 1 favorite page that he looks at repeatedly because he is attracted to the baby's facial expression. I would like to buy another one--new--for my second grandson and was disappointed to see that Amazon does not have any. I hope the publisher will do another printing because this book was a major hit.

My wife and I both graduated with early childhood education degrees and always love picking up books for children we may have in the future.
I bought this book to add to our collection. One reason I ended up getting it is because our first pet was a dwarf bunny.
The style of this book has a very metallic feeling. It has a semi-olde time feel to it. The colors are very pastelly and sort of dreary feeling...like old color photographs.
The story is short but very cute. It brought a smile to both my wife and my faces.
The pictures in this book are very nice and pertain to the story very well. If the pictures were drawn or digitally done, this book would not be that great. The pictures are really what make this book.

I have used this book with both of my children. Both of them became OBSESSED with this book. I started reading it to my oldest when she was only four months old. We have hundreds of children's books and this is always the number one choice every time. It is so worn that I have had to tape every page where it has been hugged and kissed so much by my kids!!! My youngest, who is two, actually reads it to me..every word!!!! I don't know what it is about this book but my girls have given it two thumbs up!!!

When my son was about two years old I got him this book. The story line is simple, but the emotions expressed are so real that my son, on more than one occasion, went to sleep with this book open on the crying baby page. He could relate to it in its most basic way. Don't worry though - the book has a happy ending...
The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and help create the protected atmosphere where emotions are OK.
Highly recommended. I buy this book for a lot of birthdays...

I stumbled across this book in a bookstore and was immediately enchanted! The pictures are so cute and the story that goes along with them is charming. Babies love to see pictures of other babies so this is sure to captivate your baby. The words are very rhythmic and one day you may find that your child has memorized all the words! If you are thinking about this book for your baby or as a gift, do not hesitate.

Jerry Smath, But No Elephants (Parents Magazine Press, 1992)
Cute little beginning reader about prejudice and the power that every member of a society (or a household) can bring to the table. Repetition will enable younger readers to get some of the words they might not grasp the first time around, the illustrations are fun, and the story is sure to keep the kiddies entertained. May strain parents' nerves after the hundredth reading, but it's certainly enjoyable enough the first ninety-nine times. *** ½

This was one of my very favorite books as a child and all these years later (I'm 25 now), my mother will still occasionally call and ask if I'd like to buy an elephant! :)
A great book that I can't wait to share with my children one day. I had several of these "Parents Magazine Press" books as a child and they were all wonderful.

But No Elephants (Once Upon a Time)
I had to read this story EVERY NIGHT until the book fell apart, and I LOVED every minute of it! This is a beautiful story of how one's heart can soften over time - and is now a classic family favorite. Shame on whoever decided to let this go out of print. I just bought three more, while I can still get them. 1 for each of my children to read to their kids (and they're not even born yet!) and one to donate to my local elementary school. Hopefully, that way hundreds of kids will get the same enjoyment as we have over the years. Long live Grandma Tildy!! :-)

This book is a childhood favorite for my three grown children. We cherish the one copy we have so I set out to order copies for all three children. This book is short and sweet with a cute story and great pictures. I treasure the memories I have of reading this book to my children.

Even with our children now in high school, college, and beyond, this book is still quoted at family gatherings. At the dinner table when someone is asked if they would like more roast beef (or salad, or whatever) a frequent response is "well, OK, but no elephants!" I recently purchased this book for my college-bound son as a graduation gift because he has such fond memories of reading it and having it read to him as a youngster. If you haven't read it, you're missing out on a real gem.

I actually didn't know quite what to expect when I picked up this book. But I found myself laughing out loud many times. And I never laugh out loud while reading a book. Dan's PETA work is merely the background to his wild and crazy life. He's never preachy, so don't let that stop you from enjoying his crazy antics. His comic timing in his writing is impeccable, and I can't recommend this book enough.

If you'd like to understand PETA a bit better, this is a good book to read. I've always had some issues with PETA, even though I'm a member myself, this sort of educated me a bit.
And Dan is pretty funny, which always makes a book fun to read.

From his early punk rocker days to carvorting with todays biggest celebrities, Dan Mathews spins a hilarious web of globe trotting adventures sprinkled with a dash a seriousness that brings light to an important subject matter; animal cruelty. From humble beginnings, success and notoriety certainly haven't changed his life long goals or sparkling personality. If you like Augusten Burroughs style of writing, grab this book and be prepared to laugh out loud. If I ever end up in a jail cell somewhere, I hope Dan is sitting next to me.

This book was simply fantastic! Funnier than David Sedaris, and a story that draws you in. You don't have to like PETA to love this book, by the way. My non-PETA friends are all enjoying it as much as I did. It's entertaining in its own right - a fabulous read. I honestly couldn't put it down. Highly, HIGHLY recommend it.

Major kudos to Dan for writing such an entertaining, honest (but not at all "in your face") and mind-shifting book about the suffering of the non-human animals that we share this planet with. I read Committed in one day. I loved it. This book proves that humor, compassion, optimism and love can change the world. If I was not a vegan before reading this book (I went vegan 5 years ago at age 37 and have never regretted it) I surely would have changed my ways after reading it.

That is the wonderful book I never read, very good pictures and good story. That is the way how we should treat animals.
It so touched me, the love and compasson from Master not only to her Dogs but also to all beings.
It is lot of blessing.

I LOVE the pictures! Benny and Lucky are my favorites, and Hermit is gorgeous. All the dogs are so lucky to have such a great mom!

Of course I love going through this book again and again, and so do my children. Each one of the dogs that Supreme Master Ching Hai adopted lastly, Hermit, Goody, Boyo, Lady, Pomas, Zolo and Hally are described in detail, their personality, their story, with beautiful intimate pictures. My soul seems to feel at peace reading the beautiful and touching love stories described in the book. Some dogs have had sad moments in their lives but thanks to the compassion of the Master who nursed them back to health and life, these stories have such a happy ending! Unconditional love incarnated!
As a result of this book entering my life, I now find myself very interested in the dogs I meet, and very keen on starting a friendly relationship with them - provided they are interested!!!
I offered the book to some animal lovers I know, and what makes me even happier is to watch them reading the book: they cannot take their eyes from the pictures, they seem to be mesmerized.
