I was really disappointed that I didn't receive this book from Amazon for my grandson's birthday. I guess it got lost in shipping. Ended up buying it at Barne's and Noble. My daughter said it was the best present her son received except for the sweater I knit him. I would highly recommend this book and hope you have better luck than I did receiving it.

Just as superior as Gomi's other books...even more pages to imagine and create! We have all of Gomi's books and one per kid. Makes a great gift, too!

My kids received Doodles & Scribbles for Christmas. They unwrapped them and quickly moved on to other presents with looks like "a book - who cares". However, after they had checked out all of their presents...what has been used the most? The coloring books. They love the fact that they can just follow the instructions on the page (i.e. add leaves to the trees) or they can embellish and add birds, rainbows, people, etc. and make a different picture than what they started with. Really a great book & worth the money.

Looks great!

I got this for my four year old. It will be a good opportunity for some one-on-one time with her and better than just a regular coloring book. Some of the pages are too advanced for her, but the book is so big that it will still take her a while to get through it. Highly recommended!

Love the idea! Hate the 'dead person'

I bought this for my 3 year old who loves coloring books, as long as they have dot to dots and "design the cookie" type pages. This is perfect for her. She loves it just as much as i thought she would. What I don't like is that some of the pages are landscape style. I mean, they go across the binding of the book which makes it difficult. I tried ripping the pages out, then glueing them to a bigger piece of construction paper. That can olny be done if you have already done the pages on the back sides (unless you want to waste pages out of a 20.00 book, i don't) it would be nice if the whole book were landscape, and the worst thing about this book is the page that says to "draw a dead person." What in the world? I ripped out that page, and good thing i saw it before she did. It has a box that resembles a coffin that you are supposed to draw the 'dead body' in. I would have considered returning the book for that reason alone had she not used over 1/2 the book already,a nd been in love with it. Seriously everyday since she got it, she has done 10-15 pages.

This is our new favorite birthday gift for our seven-year old daughter's friends. We love this book! It has great starts for fun and creative drawings that children can make. Great for the "established artist" or non-drawers! We look forward to trying out more of these books.

This is part of a series of books from Japan starting with Scribbles that has a bunch of interesting artwork and directs children to either color in or complete the pictures. My daughters find this book fascinating and we spend hours coloring. This is a great book for long trips either in the car or even in an airplane, though its size somewhat limits it's portability (it's a BIG paperback book). One other possible downside is that some (very few) of the pictures are a little morbid and appear out of place, but I wonder if some references to dead people are more related to a different culture regarding death. This doesn't bother my wife and I and our daughters really enjoy this book.

As a freehand embroiderer for more than a couple of decades, I purchased this book a few years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I must admit that I buy books like this as much to enjoy reading as to learn from. Unlike a prior reviewer, I won't criticize Ms. Fahl for having a different artistic vision that I might have--and my work is quite different from hers. So what? This book is presented as a jumping-off point for the buyer's creativity. This book is a great companion to Ms. Fahl's DVD presentation on working with thread; I have reviewed it separately. For a beginner, this can be a very good first resource.

As one reviewer says, this is a must have, must keep how to publication. As I read the introduction, it occurred to me that I could follow the directions and learn free-motion stitching, by which I have been terribly intimidated.

Ms. Fahl takes you from a first-class introduction to several practice exercises and projects -- all designed to allow the reader to become thoroughly comfortable with the process. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful, and the instructions are clear and well-written.

I use self-learning books all the time, and this is one of the best I've ever read and used. Learning how to draw with thread has been the most fun my sewing machine and I have had together in a long while.

Do yourself a favor and buy this one. It's surely a keeper.

We just cannot get enough time to try everything in this book It is absolutely inspiring. It is exciting just reading it and makes one long to get to the sewing machine. Why do we have to do housework, cooking and cleaning when there are such exciting things to create. Thanks to Ann Fahl for the work she has put into this book.I will always treasure it as I learn the art of Thread Painting.

Allburg is the best picture book writer out there. He gets a idea like a child would, such as how the cowboys in a picture book feel, and isn't afraid to go full speed ahead and explore it.

There's always layers to his works. An asset for all parents of young children.

It is a day like anyother in riverbend, where nothing ever happens, occasionally a stage coach will pass through, but wont stop, thats because no one ever comes or goes from the town, simply because theres nothing to be done or seen there. One day the Sheriff walks out into the road looks around, seeing everything normal, he looks down the road and then sees a bright light... and then it goes out. he wanders back into the station to ponder what the light could have been, a stage coach rides into town, with a horrible goo all over it, after several more discoveries of the "slime" the sheriff forms a posse to go after whatever or whoever is doing this destruction. Only for the reader to discover, riverbend.is.a.coloring.book.

I loved this book. this was by far my favorite chris van alsburg book ever, because its got the most irony of all of his books and is so well put together. he has such a great style with his writing and illustrations. I particualariy liked the part where they show the kids hand coloring in the sheriff. All young readers will enjoy this book, and older readers might just get a kick out of it too. enjoy.

Chris van Allsburg's imagination is amazing!

Like all Chris van Allsburg's books, "Bad Day at Riverbend" shows an astonishing blend of imagination and talent. The good folks of the tiny western town called Riverbend start to realize that there are all sorts of strange things happening--and no one can explain them. People are afraid. People are uneasy. People turn to the town's sherriff for help.

Adults will tune in right away to what's going on, but what fun to see understanding dawn on a child's face when they realize where the light and color are coming from--it's positively magical to watch.

Van Allsburg employs his usual stellar artistic talent in an unusual way here, and the end result is captivating. There is a sense of unease here, a discomfiting sense of mystery that pervades all Van Allsburg's work, and it works wonderfully well here to heighten the sense of suspense. Much to be admired!

I have loved this wonderful book since it came out. This is a grownup's book masquerading as a kiddie book. The children I know have not liked the book, but the adults howl over it. It's one of those books children don't really get because it subtly makes fun of kids...but that is what the fun is all about.

One past reviewer said this was not Chris Van Allsburg's typical illustration. There IS no typical Van Allsburg illustration. All of his books are totally unique. You will not find a copycat book in his whole award winning collection.

The whole point of this delightful books is that it mirrors a child's coloring book. The opening pages are uncolored and shows the typical western town with the peaceful citizens living their quiet daily lives with the usual sheriff in attendance to round up the bad guys. Suddenly a horse and rider pull into town. Hanging from the horse are greasy colored strips hanging from him. The rider was in the same terrible condition. He looked awful. The rider tells the sheriff that he was riding along minding his own business, when suddenly there came a sudden bright light and then he was attacked. The sheriff knows he must act at once to save the town from this terrible unknown threat. I won't tell you the ending.

If you are reading this book in a bookstore, be prepared for people to stare as you double over with tears streaming down your face.

I like the one about the 1970s and my kids like the ones about the seahorses. The markers that came with the book are good quality and are very bright. What a treat to get these markers with the book. I think this book would be appropriate for kids, teens, adults and especially for retirees.

If you miss reaching for the crayons and spending hours with a good coloring book, than this book is for you (that is, if you're an adult). Samaras's tongue-in-cheek take-off (literally, there are many topless devil girls in this book) on children's activity books is a riot - lots of hot'n'spicy recipes, mazes, even fetish paperdolls. It's really funny, but never goes so far as to be offensive, raunchy, or pornographic, and appeals to women and men. Samaras can really draw up a storm: she's obviously influenced by Catwoman from the old Batman series, Betty Page, and all of the other fabulous babes of the 20th century. We put this book on the coffeetable with a box of crayons and everyone finds it irresistable... Very unique and lots of fun!

Artist and illustrator Isabel Samaras has put the joyfully erotic sensibility of her paintings into an interactive format for the masses with Devil Babe, a clean-lined, well-coiffed, oh-so-wicked representation of the bad, bad girl inside us all (lucky us!). For women who love their bodies, love themselves, and men who love them for it.

This delightful little coloring book has 16 beautiful transparent plates of geishas (reading, dancing, playing instruments, etc.) that can be colored with any medium and then placed over a lamp or window to give the illusion of stained glass. My only wish is that there were more pictures.

This program with CD's and book is incredible! Both my grandchildren, ages 7 and 9, have listened to all the CD's. If they're tense from too many activities or just over-stimulated by the TV or video games, I hand them the CD player and they listen to one of the stories. It always relaxes them and gets them back to balance. They like to listen to the stories before bed as it relaxes them, and they sleep better. Wonderful for all children but a must for highly sensitive children. I wish I had been given a tool like this as a child. My grandchildren continue to listen to the stories over and over again.
