Great explanation of the evils of fractional-reserve banking
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-19
This is a brilliant work that shows with great clarity exactly what is wrong with fractional-reserve banking. While our politicians talk about stimulus packages and ways to save our ailing economy, they should read this book and work toward the reforms it proposes. The madness of boom-and-bust cycles won't stop until this wretched practice of fractional-reserve banking is stopped. The language is clear and the explanations very thorough. A great read that will give you a very deep understanding of our economy.

Informed and contemporary.

Review Date: 2007-06-03
The first eight chapters of this comprehensive book detail the historical failings of banks to observe the law and government's failure to implement the law with regard to the irregular deposit, and then goes on to explain how this has been beneficial for bank profits and government goals at the expense of an ill-informed and deceived public. Chapter nine considers how this state of affairs can be reformed by a return to the gold standard, the abolition of the central banking system, etc.

The language of the book is fairly straightforward, but it is a dense read from chapter five onwards, so be prepared to stick with it. A good study guide would be a useful addition.

Readers of this book should also consider George Reisman's, Capitalism: A treatise on economics.

In "Money Toolbox for Women" author Audrey Reed takes sound money principles and discusses them in a metaphor of tools in a toolbox. Just like a regular toolbox each of these tools has a specific purpose and you may find that one is more useful to you at one particular time than another one, but together they comprise a complete tool set for any occasion.

Some "tools" are concrete financial advice, others are more philosophical or psychological in nature, and still others cross into the metaphysical. For example, one "tool" is a process to figuring out exactly where you spend your money and how much you spend. This is a critical part of changing your financial picture and a very sound process. Another example is the fact that many people carry around false beliefs about money. These beliefs have to change in order for you to change your financial picture. This is also sound financial advice but since these contain psychological factors the process for removing them is also a psychological one. And still another example would be kinesthetic muscle testing to get in contact with your "inner knower" for answers to questions. This clearly falls into the metaphysical for most people.

The trick here is to actually use this as a toolbox. Use the appropriate tool for the job and use the ones that you understand how to use. If you don't agree with the metaphysical tools don't discard the book, just use the ones you are uncomfortable with. There is a lot of good information in this text and it is written in a light approachable manner that most people would enjoy. For example, she discusses the bargain trolls; those things that cause you to purchase an item just because it is a tremendous bargain, not because you need or want it. It's not a bargain if you would not have normally purchased it; it is a waste of money.

Although it is written with a definite slant towards women (most men would get little value out of a tool for organizing their purse), it is a recommended purchase for anyone who wants to take control of their finances and don't know where to start.

Good advice for men also!

The approach in this delightful read is engaging -- a gentle and very direct confrontation with our underlying beliefs about money combined with practical tips for "getting money handled."

I learned from the book and bought two for my daughters.

Belongs on Every Financial Bookshelf.

Here is a book that teaches us the philosophy of handling money wisely. It's not a book about investing, but one about becoming aware of where we spend money, communicating about money with our family, developing empowering financial beliefs, where to find money in our lives, and how to attract more financial abundance.

Audrey Reed has done a fabulous job of making this complex subject (financial belief systems) fun and easy to understand. She also gives practical, easy to follow advice on how to create new daily disciplines in order to get out of debt and enjoy a more stress-free money life.

This readable, non-intimidating book can save many financial lives from ruin. All it takes is one solid hour of quiet time to read. Even the words are simple! For those of us with busy schedules and lack the time to thoroughly contemplate how to improve our financial health, this book will definitely help fix major problems. Also, this book turns common financial wisdom on its head: for instance, never negotiate a car payment or any other sort of loan based on the monthly payment. If you want more details, buy the book!

Great book. The author leaves out the financial rhetoric, and tells you how things really are in an easy to understand format. A must for college students, and anyone else who is needs a little help making sound financial decisions. Do you really think the salesman who is working on commission is going to give you straight answers about the product he is selling. Get real and read this book.

As important as money is, most of us don't have a clue about how to manage it.

Most of us have the feeling we could probably know more than we do about our money, but we don't know where to find the information.

Most of us don't have the kind of money that requires us to have estate planners, financial consultants, or a full time accountant. However, we do have loans, homes, impending retirement, and hopefully, a savings account.

Tom Martin's book "More Bang For Your Bucks" plainly discusses important financial topics without going over our heads. Each chapter provides real life scenarios, charts, and comparisions to help readers make informed decisions about their money.

This book is great for people at any age, but it would make a great gift for college students. I have given this book to two, so far.

I really don't know much about investing. I even avoided those type of courses in college (majored in the life sciences). But I realize that now that I'm a home-owner and making money I need to do something about my future. I'm not a big fan (at all) of the "For Dummies" series of books, so I wanted something a little more informative but personal. While browsing the books I came across this book and found the layout appealing. With chapter names like "Understanding Mutual Funds: The Nitty-Gritty Details" and "Seduced by the Dark Side" I thought this would hold my attention. Upon browsing the first few pages of some of the chapters I also realized that the author took care to write for a varied audience, which I appreciate since this subject somewhat scares me. All in all: job well done! I have read the book from cover to cover and I even made notes in the margins and bookmarked some of the pages. I'm ready to start investing, and I'm much more confident now! Thanks!!

I was asked to review an early draft of this book. I'm really glad I did! Like many other people, I'm recently retired, need to stay tuned to the stcok market so that I can keep my "nest egg" wisely invested, but would much rather be outside playing golf, tennis, etc. I want to enjoy every minute of of each day, and the last thing I want to do is study and play the stock market! So, I don't, or at least not nearly as much as I should.

This book was exactly what I needed. I learned a lot more about mutual funds than I had expected to learn and it was written so that I could easily understand it. Subsequently, I'm making changes that will simplify and improve my investment strategies and will allow me to play golf without that little voice in the back of my head telling me that instead, I should be sitting at my desk studying the "market"!

If this all sounds familiar and you can relate to what I'm saying, then read it! You'll be glad you did!

I just finished reading this book and found that it filled in many inconsistencies that I have noted in my mainstream economic study. The author explains clearly and concisely the origins of and money and its importance to any economic system. He proceeds to describe the evolution of banking to its current inflationary state. He clearly shows that this inflationary states results from a combination of fractional reserve banking, the government's grant of monopoly powers through a cental bank (the U.S. Federal Reserve in the case of the U.S.), and the central banks open market operations to manipulate bank reserves (e.g., monetizing debt). Finally, Rothbard makes it clear that the banking industry's inflationary policies are beneficial to the banking industry itself and leave the reader no doubt that this industry has a vested interest in the status-quo.

Interesting and Revealing

I found this book to be the most interesting and revealing book I have ever read about the banking system and the Federal Reserve. Rothbard has a very different perspective than most conventional economists, but his explanations are very clear and compelling. He explains how fractional reserve banking makes banks inherently prone to bankruptcy, how the Federal Reserve and other central banks create inflation, and how money has evolved and been debased. Gene Epstein, the Barron's columnist, recently recommended The Mystery of Banking as the best book to read for anyone interested in understanding how our banking system works.

Resourceful readers can locate it for free online. Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch?

I am not a financial genius. I have struggled all my life with finances. I have read books, taken classes, and advice. I have never been able to get my finances under control. This book is easy to read, easy to understand and easy to follow. For the first time in many years, I have a balance in my savings account and am beginning to get myself into a better financial position. I really didn't think anyone could help me do that. I would highly recommend this book to anyone (any age) who has personal finances and wants to know the best way to handle them. --gail

What Bill has accomplished here, is the perfect storm, or shall I say the Perfect $$$torm of Kiyosaki, Orman, Cramer, and Financial Empowerment 101. Wow, the 401K section really did it for me!

This book is easy to read and even entertaining at times, and the author does not talk down to the reader. Like the other reviewers, I bought it for my young adult children, but I learned quite a lot more than I anticipated. Bill's ability to explain terms briefly and clearly clarified some of my misconceptions. The book also brings home the idea that budgeting needn't be torture, but instead ita road to real savings in the future. How to deal with your your paycheck inclusions and how to manage your taxes are covered well. Bill explains from soup to nuts a vast amount of information in an appealing way, I'm even giving it as a Christmas gift to some of my less than financially savvy friends.

I recently read "The No BS Handbook for Successful Investing" upon the recommendation of a friend. I am not a "financial investor" and ignorant to such matters. So, it was with a bit of skepticism that I began to read. As I read, however, I found myself saying, "ahh, so that's what that means" or "how interesting," or "good to know." Judge Smith passes on his wisdom from personal experiences and trusted resources explaining the whys and wherefores encouraging us to make good financial choices. I found this book very informative with practical financial lessons that I can put in to practice. I read with highlighter in hand, and will be using it many times over as a reference tool. I am also going to buy a copy for my son.

"No BS" is suitably named. Peter Smith begins his book by asking his readers to get their financial act together by spending a few weeks getting a sense of their financial situation. Most investing books gloss over this important first step, hoping that somehow they will change their ways after learning the benefits of investing. Instead, Peter Smith asks something from his readers and in exchange offers valuable investing advice and experience. He also focuses his critical, judicial eye in later chapters on the financial media, giving praise to some financial pundits and wondering why people even bother listening to others. A very readable book (I've assigned it to high-school students as an introduction to financial instruments), The No BS Handbook for Successful Investing is a great guide to the ever-expanding array of financial instruments available to investors.

Solid Investment Advice

Review Date: 2008-01-09
The "No BS Handbook" is a terrific little handbook and is aptly named. It is a very compact collection of common sense advice on a broad range of investment-related subjects such as mutual funds, taxes, retirement plans, etc. Complex tomes have been produced on all these subjects but Pete Smith's handbook focuses on what he considers the essentials without any wasted words or hint of self-promotion. The writing is concise, based on experience, easy to understand and also contains a glossary at the end for anyone who is not sure of the difference between an ETF and an Index Fund. It is also punctuated with humor which again makes it easier and more fun to read than the average money-related book. Another helpful element is Judge Smith's inclusion of examples from his own portfolio
that illustrate some of the do's and don'ts of investing. In sum, I highly recommend this handbook for anyone who wants to put in a little work to become a more succesful investor.

This is definately my favorite volume of the manga! Ryoko is my heroine, so I loved seeing her in action! This book is great because it shows both sides of Ryoko; we really get a good glimpse at the softer side which she often keeps hidden. The story itself is awesome, the gang ventures into space in search of a treasure Ryoko vaguely remembers, and on a distant planet they meet up with a mysterious stranger who Ryoko knew 800 years before! You have got to get this manga! This was the first volume of the manga I bought and after reading it I was convinced to exand my collection. Get it now!

Clearly THE book for the beginner and intermediate collector. It gives an excellent overview of each type of note (Nationals, Silver Certs, etc.) as well brief descriptions of each note within each type. A great way to learn the history associated with the engravings on U.S. paper currency from the Civil War (1861) to the present.

And, of course, the Friedberg numbering scheme is the standard method of referencing notes among collectors and dealers alike.

It should be noted however, that the values given for the notes are very rough approximations (very conservative). This is especially true for the UNC grade(MS60-64). There are no values for GEM notes (MS65+).

If you're looking for a comprehensive note reference with ball park values, this book is for you.

Great book for a beginner or Advanced U.S Currency collector

I find this is a great book for any collector of U.S. Currency. Crisp photos of just about EVERY diff Note 1861-Current (Very Nice color section in the back) and up-to-date pricing in the fast changing currency market. Also great for keeping track of your own collection. Definately Recommended!

A must have for the Currency Collector.

This is the standard reference work on United States Currency for the collector. While the prices given are pretty much obsolete in the volatile currency market, the Friedberg Numbering system is universally used by dealers and collectors alike. If you are considering participation in floor or online auctions, you cannot tell what you are bidding on without this book, as all notes will be listed by FR#. Well worth the investment!

This book is a must-have for the serious US currency collector, along with the Standard Catalog, 17th edition. Together they provide a great catalog and price guide for US Treasury issues. There are good sections on fractionals and Confederate currency, and decent treatment of colonials. No obsoletes or military payment certificates. The black and white photos are quite a bit larger than those in the Standard Catalog. The color pictures in the back are a nice touch, but the printing is not the world's greatest -- many of the reds come out as pinks, the greens look almost fluorescent, etc.

There aren't many anecdotes or interesting bits of trivia, but as a guide and catalog it is top notch.
