This is a well told, touching story. Krabacher's style of writing is fluent and fast-paced. I appreciate her honesty about her own sorrows and mistakes. This is not a guilt-laden book designed to make the reader drop everything and fly to Haiti. In fact, the author says what she does isn't for everyone, but believes God prepared her for this ministry from the time she was a child. I've read at least 20 books in the last six months and couldn't tell you much about any of them, but this one is worth remembering and passing on to a friend.

Wow! Great book.

I never write reviews. This was a wonderful book. I really know how to pray for Haiti now. Susan writes so well. I couldn't put this book down! I read it in a couple days. We hope to eventually adopt form haiti, or at least to give money to great organzations there. Enjoy!

"Angels of a Lower Flight," by Susie Scott Krabacher
I found this book to be a candid look at the life of a woman who overcame child abuse and life as a Playboy Bunny only to emerge as a saving force in Haiti. The story reveals the harsh realities of life in Port Au Prince, from gang life to corruption and the superstitions that lead thousands of parents to abandon their less than perfect children.

Susie Scott Krabacher landed in Haiti during its most turbulent political turnover in 1994 and began a mission to save children abandoned in hospital wards - children who had not yet been disposed of or sold for body parts or voodoo rituals.

It is a must read for all who are interested in Haitian culture and understanding it from the eyes of a Alabama woman from the Unite States.
Although heartbreaking at times, this story is purely one of triumph and courage.

One can only conclude that she is doing God's work - and that only God could have prepared her for this unique and unselfish role.

A powerful story of one person's impact

Susan Scott Krabacher's abusive childhood and stubborn growth into an international caregiver is an inspiring tale about the power of selfless living. Although I felt she occasionally lapsed for too long into stories of her childhood and days spent with Playboy, the narrative redeems itself in stories of the abject poor she ultimately helped by turning her pain into motivation. We could all learn from her story.

Incredibly helpful. Very easy read- although this may be because it was well written and extremely interesting. I use it daily during interactions with strangers on the bus to family members. Makes communication feel like cheating because of the way I can easily express my ideas and needs to people around me. I'd recommend it to my friends and family members, but I'm afraid they'll learn my tricks:)

Thanks so much Drs. Glaser!!!

As a psychologist, I appreciate books that carefully translate research findings into practical advice. This book does this. Rather than claiming a "brand new never before seen magic solution" (be careful of those), the authors present an excellent systematic summary of what has been learned from decades of research on effective communication research. Although they present some of the research to help the reader understand, I recognized far more research findings that influence their advice than they bother to mention. They give some simple yet effective strategies for common communication problems such as "raising delicate issues", and "responding to criticism". Careful explanations are given for how to prepare for and respond to such situations. The authors avoid the common approach of authors of giving one "right" response to problems, and instead guide the reader to understand the purpose of each step they recommend, allowing the reader far more flexibility in implementing the ideas taught. This allows the reader to create their own style without having an overly rehearsed feel to it.

I've read many books on communication, and this is the best one I've found so far. The authors take care to clarify how various problems can arise, and offer useful advice for dealing with them. This book is far more complete than many "pop press" books on the topic, which are more about sounding fancy and fun to read than actually being useful. Nevertheless, this book is surprisingly easy to read. There is appropriate repetition, elaboration and suggestions for practice to actually help the interested reader learn the skills taught and understand why they are helpful.

"Breakthrough Networking: Building Relationships That Last," by Lillian Bjorseth, addresses problems that many people have with meeting people, building relationships, and projecting a professional image. In an era where cradle-to-grave job security is a thing of the past, it is beneficial to continue building relationships throughout your career.

"Breakthrough Networking" makes it easy for anyone to network. Bjorseth discusses different networking styles, and through a series of questions about everything from appearance to desktops to office enhancements, the reader can establish his or her own networking personality type. Bjorseth addresses each networking style separately, listing strengths, weaknesses and suggestions for improvement. This personalized approach helps the reader understand how to effectively communicate with other networking styles.

In addition to networking styles, "Breakthrough Networking" also examines the effects of the personal and printed images. Bjorseth explores the positive and negative connotations of different colors, gender-specific discrepancies, and even the importance of seating arrangements.

Another valuable tool is Bjorseth's insight on setting networking goals. She includes checklists of questions to help readers refine their target market and networking strategies. Also included are suggestions on how to find groups to join in order to build a networking pool and how to get more specific results from those suggestions.

Bjorseth also includes a section of ice-breaking activities, games, and workshop exercises to flex the networking muscles such as "Networking Bingo" and "Networking Poker."

"Breakthrough Networking: Building Relationships That Last" is a guide to networking and building relationships from which anyone, regardless of profession, will benefit.

In a world where the current business ideology seems to be about maximizing short term profits, climbing over others, and getting the maximum return possible with the minimal effort or investment Larry Burkett draws a sharp contrast.

Using referenced Biblical principles throughout the book Mr. Burkett outlines what it means to run a business by God's standards. This does not mean becoming a non-profit or lossing money - but it does mean completely changing the way we view the business, our employees and customers, and our role as business leaders. The principles laid out are challenging and often contrary to the advice you are used to hearing.

I found it to be an extremely useful and informative resource that helped me to see how I could not only run a business successfully, but also not sacrifice my concience or ideals. One of the primary tenents of this book is that we are stewards of the resources God gave us, meaning that the money we have and the business we may own ultimately belong to God, not us, and he has entrusted us with them to use in a manner he would approve of. If you are comfortable with this premise I believe you will enjoy the book and find it challenging. If you are not comfortable with this premise you will probably have difficulty accepting the concepts he has outlined.

Our software firm needed something reliable that we could use to pitch to private equity investors. This easily did the trick. The book was written by investors who reveal what their interests are.

I would highly reccommend this for anyone in the business community. It also gave me deeper insights into the investment area and it also gives clear insight into how to grow businesses that can have a lasting global impact.

It also was quite fun (made me chuckle abit) and concise =)

Business Plan Wisdom Well Worth Your Time
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2005-10-20
This book is aimed at those entrepreneurs who are seeking a substantial equity investment for their fledgling going concerns. The focus is the view from the perspective of the professional investor, the venture capital firm officials; the people who say yes or no about fairly large sums of money. These professionals are most responsive to management teams, teams which have a decent quantity of the right experience and which include members who cover the management and necessary technical disciplines well.

Business plans, however, are needed and should be used in many other business situations including sole proprietor startups as well as established companies aiming to launch special projects, new products or other ventures.

The good news about this book is that

It is easy to read

It has sound wisdom to impart to virtually all who are considering the preparation of a business plan

It steers the reader away from "forms" (fill in the blanks formats & software) as well as sample plans.

On this last point the authors write: "Sophisticated investors disagree strongly with such "cookie-cutter" approaches to writing business plans simply because the financiers believe that each business is unique, with its own special marketing, sales, production, and other issues." If the book convinces the reader of this key point it will have performed a great service.

From my perspective the content covers all of the important issues that make up the business planning process. The advice is very sound if you can make appropriate adjustments for your particular business situation. Conveniently each chapter is neatly and briefly summarized with the key points to be retained by the reader.

Virtually all entrepreneurs need to sell their business concept. It may be to family and friends, to key customers or suppliers, to potential partners, private investors or key employee prospects and to one or more lenders. All potential entrepreneurs should read the final chapter titled "And Now It's Show Biz". This chapter tells how to cap off an efficient and effective business plan with an equally effective oral presentation.

For the book's primary audience this post-plan interview procedure is critical in securing venture capital funding. The advice contained in this last chapter, however, can be applied by any entrepreneur talking to any important audience (with appropriate adjustments). This chapter is, as the saying goes, "worth the price of admission."

Highly recommended as the "one book" if you should limit your reading to just one.

Great info, good read.

This ground breaking book should be read by everyone working in the elercare industry. Yes, yes, we all need to be aware of treating each other better and her thoughts and examples of this are brilliant but FOR ONCE DONNA STOOD OUT ABOVE THE REST BY POINTING OUT THAT THE CELEBRITY EXPERIENCE APPLIES TO OUR ELDERS TOO. These hidden and forgotten people are given their rightful place in the Celebrity Experience as Donna gives voice to how our elders should be treated. She has included celebrity care of our elders along with all of her other examples of celebrity and made it just as important. Eldercare sharing print time with Starbucks, imagine that. Thank you Donna for putting eldercare in with the "big boys" where it deserves to be.

You know what I was completely unprepared for when reading this book? The way my blood started--literally--vibrating! My brain was whirling around with this vision: what would it look like if I treated the people I work with in extraordinary ways? Who would I become? Who might the people around me become? What would have to happen in my life in order to, quite simply, start seeing the world through a different lens: the lens of treating someone like a star!? The book is fantastic--a totally unexpected surprise. It's SOOO easy to read, so well laid out, such a nice mix of professionalism and fun, such a great showcase for inspiring story after inspiring story. But really, now, folks: It is a really good thing the last four pages of the book are blank. WERE blank, I should say. I could NOT STOP flipping to the back and scribbling down one incredible idea after another for ways to treat my customers in a manner that would blow them away. A lot of the ideas I wrote down came straight out of the book. You don't have to work too hard--Donna's more than happy to lay it all out and make it easy for you. But, you know what? TONS of the ideas I wrote on those back pages came straight out of my own brain! I got inspired. The stories and suggestions turned out to be just a springboard for my own revelations about just how engaged and creative and attuned I am actually capable of being with my clients! I read the book yesterday, in one fell swoop! I filled up those four blank back pages as I went. And today--no kidding--I have spend the entire day creating amazing emails, making amazing phone calls, and concocting plans for a whole new way of thinking about honoring those people who are good enough to cast their lot with me! Take a deep breath, pick up this book, and get ready to amaze YOURSELF! I am a total and utter "Celebrity Experience" convert!

If you are in any sort of service-related field, do yourself a favor and buy this book! As the manager of a service department I know I will be using the tools I learned in The Celebrity Experience for years to come. I was not a third of the way through when I realized I already wanted to read the book again. The first read to just enjoy it and let the concepts and stories wash over me. The second read to really drill down and discover how I could use it as a guide to help my department provide better service and to help me celebrate my own staff. It showed me how to lay out the red carpet in both directions. And it didn't hurt that the book was so entertaining. After just finishing three dry, snooze-inducing business books, The Celebrity Experience was a refreshing joy to read. I laughed, I cried, I learned something. Bravo Donna Cutting!

I'm so glad that Donna has written this book. From the very first chapter my head started jumping with ideas that we could implement immediately for little or no cost. In fact, many of the pratical ideas and suggestions Donna has are all about thinking in new ways about ordinary events - which can then change how we are acting in those moments - which creates the opportunity for WOW!

Donna shows how easy and fun it is to treat each other well; you will be asking yourself, "Why in the heck haven't we been doing this from day one?" Even if your goal is only to create more fun in the workplace, this book will have you waking up in the middle of the night to write down the deluge of ideas that will come.

For example, we have some new job titles, like SURPRISE and DELIGHT,and DIRECTOR of WOW. At staff meetings everyone gets to spend time "bragging" about how they fulfilled those roles; exchanging ideas for even better service. A very simple change, with powerful influence as people take the roles seriously.

Donna has shown us that we can do anything we want and have a great time doing it.

This book is not terrible. I found it to be cliche at times, and it definitely contained a number of gender stereotypes, which the author would include and apologize for, which I found to be somewhat annoying. It's a quick read, so at least I didn't feel like I was wasting a lot of time. I have read a lot of books on women in corporations, and I didn't think this one was particularly new or innovative, and at times, the writing was poor. At the end of every chapter, there were exercises, and I did think those were helpful. For example, one suggestion was to write one hand written thank you note per week - not particularly innovative, but it is a good practice, I think, and a good reminder to do that.

In all, I think Lois Frankel's books are much better written, with much better advice.

Definitely Worth 10 Stars!

This is an excellent business book!

I recommend it to any CEO wondering how to maintain a profitable and healthy organization beyond next quarter's bonus.

John Abrams shows us how real business success can be achieved for the corporation and the community in this documentary of South Mountain Company. It is well written and packed with the tested principals and concepts that have built this successful, community centered business on Martha's Vineyard.

Imagine that true workplace democracy combined with commitments to ethical business dealings and social responsibility can lead to a high quality, sustainable, and profitable business! Corporate America should sit up and take notice!

I vote that we make this book required reading as part of the rehabilitation process of all incarcerated former corporate executives.

In an era in which corporations are measured on quarterly, single bottom-line returns, John Abrams presents a compelling case that a multiple bottom-line, values oriented, long term focus can be a successful business strategy in The Company We Keep.

In this well-written and compelling book, Abrams artfully examines the long-accepted American business concept of growth;and determines that growth for growth's sake is a short-term strategy leading to failure. He weaves over twenty years of experience in construction, design and sustainable building practices into a philosophical look at the meaning of work and success; the result provides the reader with fabric from which to examine his/her own company, work life, natural environment and style of doing business. Perhaps most importantly, the book is written in a warm, reflective style which makes it hard to put down and leaves the reader yearning for more insights and information from this writer, who provides substantial research and details to support his work and ideas. Just as a good movie creates long-lasting recollections of scenes, The Company We Keep brings daily reminders of wonderful stories and the confidence that strong personal and company values can indeed be the means to a successful and growing business.

A Must-Read for every MBA program and anyone interested in succeeding in business with integrity!

Can a company built and grown on Abrams's hippie values of kindness, love, respect, honesty, and freedom of the individual actually be successful in this era rife with competition?

A friend recommended this book, as am a business owner, MBA, Gen X/ Y, who embraces these values to the extent that I'll never compromise, and have built a small, successful business with similar emphasis on treating people involved extraordinarily well. Profit, like in Abrams's story, was simply a bi-product. And the joy of knowing I'm doing good for so many interested parties is priceless.

So many lessons to be learned in this wonderful book! I couldn't put it down once I started reading. Abrams's completely open, honest approach is heart-warming and inspiring.

One can hold true to one's values, and still build a fabulously successful company, one in which the coworkers are also owners with a vested interest. And customers, too, are treated like partners. Emphasis on quality of work, versus growth simply for the sake of growth, is often illustrated.

This is one of those rare books one remembers long after reading. Each day since reading the book, I hear ordinary words like 'cooperation', which bring me back to the wonderful stories in this book and to the many studies well-noted in the book suggesting further evidence of people's natural urge to cooperate (and success in doing so).

A beautiful story and a must-read for anyone in business who wants to keep his/ her soul! Thank you for sharing your heartfelt, model example of developing a very successful business with values, Mr. Abrams!! The book is a classic. Will revisit it often, and already sent several copies to friends.

Best business book I've ever read

In an age of every type of self-help tale imaginable, this is the best business book I have read period; it makes perfect sense. The Openness the author is willing to share and the research behind it is tremendously thought provoking. I have purchased numerous copies to share with my friends.

Like any avid reader I picked this book in the summer and put it in the pile of about 200 "to read immediately." To be candid, I very likely would not have picked it up as soon as I did, but with my business in transition I felt I would give it a try.

The substantive issues summarized on p. 238 really cause the book to stand out; the author takes the building of South Mountain and allow its principles to transcend the story itself. At my bedside I keep a copy of Anne Morrow Lindbergh's "The Gift from the Sea" and often read passages. In it she writes: "Island living has been a lens through which to examine my own life in the North. I must keep my lens when I go back. Little by little one's holiday vision tends to fade. I must remember to see with island eyes. The shells will remind me; they must be my island eyes."

Later she queries, "Can one solve world problems when one is unable to solve one's own? Where have we arrived in this process? Have we been successful, working at the periphery of the circle and not at the center?" Her question is similar to a familiar passage of Tolstoy's a deceased client of mine, a hero himself, often quoted: "Everybody wants to change the world, but they don't want to change themselves."

The leap of faith John Abrams took in changing the culture of South Mountain is a great example of starting from the center. He has worked hard and with creative aforethought in solving one's own corporate problems with a view to the outside world. This is not an idyllic story of a community business developed on the the Island of Martha's Vineyard. It is a practical guide, but how fortunate the author has been that view is with "island eyes."

Back to p. 238, you wonder: "I don't know yet, nor do I know whether I will ever know, to what degree we can build on the foundations we have created and to what degree we can improve our skills. Neither do I know to what extent our experience can help others go down the path toward economic democracy and community entrepreneurship. I don't know whether, in time, many more people will share ownership and control of the companies they work in."

I think John Abrams has the model right here to make great changes in our corporate world. One can only imagine if many small and large businesses utilized this modus operandi. One only needs to pick up the business page of any major newspaper to think the world(`s problems) would be better off.

I have been a part of the company for 21 years and took sole ownership a little over 4 years ago. Similarly to South Mountain, we are an established enterprise which, for a variety of reasons, are at crossroads in our growth and development. I would like to consider tailoring the South Mountain model to my company and go down the same path. Nonetheless, this read is for any business manager/owner with a company big or small as its applications ring true.

Full of good ideas, provokations, insights, this is another great book from Clancy et al. I'd recommend a full set of their books to anyone, not a dud among them.

Still the Best Marketing Book on the Market

The binding is falling apart and I've highlighted so many pages that my copy seems to glow in the dark, but there's no mistaking the value of this book. Counterintuitive Marketing continues to be THE best marketing book available today, bar none. Why? Because while it debunks many of the myths surrounding the marketing industry with crystal clarity, it also gives specific details on how to make your marketing better. This is not an armchair read (although it moves pretty quickly). If you're serious about marketing or if you aren't getting the performance you or your bosses are expecting, then read this book. It's an eye opener.

The first half of Kevin Clancy's recent book, Counter-Intuitive Marketing, is the best marketing book I've read. Period. The second half will fly a thousand feet over the head of most marketing practitioners, and can only be enjoyed by dyed-in-the-wool marketing researchers. It doesn't matter. The bottom line is these counter-intuitive concepts will probably change the way you plan and implement your marketing programs. I enthusiastically recommend this book to everyone involved with business-to-business marketing and advertising.

Counterintuitive marketing was an amazing book. I learned more about marketing and the decision-making tools that are available today from this book than I did in my MBA classes. If you are a serious marketing person, you need to read this book.

It's not BS--this is the way the smartest people in marketing make decisions. People who cling to outdated ways of thinking and are afraid of change probably won't like this book. The only way to make better decisions about marketing is to take the time to understand your customers. This requires research.

People who skim a few chapters, will miss important ideas. For instance, the authors explain how to use focus groups correctly--as a starting point in the research process. They never say don't use them, they say don't use them to make multi-million dollar decisions. That anyone in this day and age is basing a critical decision on the opinions of 6-8 people is crazy.

This book is the future of marketing. Anyone who says otherwise just doesn't get it.

I just read Clancy and Krieg's Counterintuitive Marketing and it was amazing. Loaded with content, solid research and practical advice. It teaches stuff about marketing I never learned in my NYU MBA program. I strongly recommend it. Then I read the screed (AKA review) by "Chanali from Asia." Who is this guy and has he worked for even a day in the real
world?

Don't let the cover fool you, Roz Usheroff packs a wallop in this insightful and dynamic read. At first I was skeptical when my Mother sent me this book as a gift to help me achieve my own goals in life. The book style looked like so many others I had seen before, but it was the content of this book which blew me away. Roz does a solid job in outlining all the key characteristics that can help one move to the top in a chosen profession. This book takes a rational, reasoned approach to finding career success. Unlike other books in the same vain, it is not filled with mumbo-jumbo quick-success schemes but rather, identifies what makes one stand out in the crowd without stepping on anyones toes.

My only complaint was the rancid cover. Other than that, this book is a 10/10. In any case, I used Roz's formulaic suggestions and the results have been better than average since I am now in my first managerial position since graduating University 2 years ago. Thanks Roz.

Well Done

Customize Your Career captures the essence of Roz Usheroff. In her successful career as a professional speaker, seminar leader and coach she has truly customized her career and developed and shared her winning strategies. How fortunate we are she has published her findings. This book records the keys to success in business and life she has used so successfully and has taught her legions of clients to employ in their lives.
For the many who have not yet experienced the personal presence of this inspirational speaker, this book is an excellent substitute. The ten chapters are truly ten steps everyone can use "to Move up, Move ahead, or Move on". This on not only a 'must-read' book, it is a 'must-refer-to-often' life guide. You will agree with Nido R. Quebein, who in the foreward urges those who look for fulfillment over mere happiness to "Read this book to learn. Study it to excel. Refer to it often to stay ahead of the crowd".
In today's pressurized world, Customize Your Career will save many people from having to try to re-invent the wheel as they move throuth life.
