I loved this book...

It has a very broad look into opening a Ebay business. It starts with the general how to establish a Ebay business. Then it onfolds into the details of everything you need to know about making money on Ebay. There are a few chapters where I would haved liked them to be longer, like the dropshipping chapter. But on general you have everything there. This book is a must.

This book is like a textbook of your favorite class from college... its very detailed and details are what matters on business.

I purchased a half a dozen books on creating a eBay business and I found this book to be the most complete and informative. Most of the others were junk. If you are starting an eBay business you must buy this book.

Skip knows what he's talking about and shares the wealth of his experience in this welcome guide. A Gold-level PowerSeller (not exactly Titanium, but high enough to show he's a pro), McGrath is also an eBay radio commentator, eBay Live speaker, and one of the most knowledgeable eBay writers around. This is a desk reference you'll want to keep handy as you build your business. Leaves no stone unturned. You can't go wrong with this one.

Skip is a very likeable writer who has obviously done well on eBay. I found this book to be well thought out easy to read. I met Skip at eBay Live last year and he was very helpful, which I appreciated. Unfortunately I also bought a book by Adam Ginsberg, only to find out through some news sites that he has been banned from eBay for shill bidding and failing to send multiple orders worth hundreds of thousands of dollars!

The only other comment I have about Skip's book is that I would have liked to have seen a few more real world examples of how his techniques can be applied. It's a small point though in a generally excellent book.

The Second Book on Research for Every Researcher
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-05
The first book each researcher needs teaches the research designs, methods and basic analysis techniques of the researcher's "home" discipline. It will be a different book for each scientific field. This book is not a substitute for such basics. It is an essential complement that teaches the attitudes, tactics, tools and organizational strategies needed to get research done.

A great way to read this book is to open to the preface and use the annotated table of contents to conduct an informal "needs analysis" of your research skills. Do you have the most trouble with organizing your work, with facing criticism, with presenting your work to an audience? Open to the chapter that addresses your greatest weakness and take 10 minutes to read practical, tactical advice that will improve your game.

It's that simple and you don't have to be embarrassed about your need to improve. The chapters are short and to the point. The resources range from web pages you can click to immediately to "Further Reading" books to explore in depth. Check out the book's web resource page at www.numbersintoknowledge.com .

Delightful excursion in thinking about how to think

It is different from, and for many purposes, better than a science textbook. More than enough science books have been written, but TNIK is better because it teaches readers how to think about the data on which science is built. Its fresh approach to understanding the natural world as well as human-made systems is a noteworthy improvement over the plug-in, grind-out perspective that academic classes typically offer and that turns off students.

Interesting & valuable, though philosophical > statistical

I expected the author to talk much about statistical analysis and related "technical stuff". I had been very wrong. In fact, the book can be regarded as a warning to common people about the "irrelevancy" and "inaccuracy" of data or information we encounter or process so that we can perform better analysis of on our own. As from pg 197, "of primary importance from this book are the following lessons:-"

- Don't be intimidated by anyone (esp those know-it-alls)
- Be a critical thinker
- Don't confuse what's countable with what really counts
- Get organized
- Question authority
- Dig into the numbers
- Focus on the essential
- Document, document, document
- Use the internet
- Remember that others don't care as much about your work as you do
- Synthesis follows analysis

In short, a good read. Dont miss it.

p.s. I like the following quotes from the book very much. (The author did use over 31 quotes with at least one for each chapter)

Just because I use a study to refute another study does not mean my study is right. It just means I believe it. Caveat Emptor. - Cynthia Crossen

Whether or not someone else knows it all isn't really relevant; the only thing that's relevant is what you know and what you do. - Robert Ringer

This is an entertaining and well written book on some of the do's and don'ts of data analysis. To quote from Dr. Beers review below, "The main emphasis is on the art of data interpretation." Indeed there are useful tools here for performing sanity checks and for asking critical questions about all sorts of data collections. ... The examples are, at best, sketchy and few in number. The anectodes are amusing but not terribly informative. I would have much preferred more concrete examples and further discussion on some technical matters. ....

While no doubt I've heard many of nuggets contained in the book over the course of my high school and college days, I found Koomey's book a pleasurable read and useful synthesis of approaches and tips for completing quality research and analyses. Internalizing Koomey's advice is going to help most readers be more discriminating consumers of published research and better authors of their own research. It's a reference source I've already gone back to myself in just a few weeks and a great training resource for new consultants my company hires.

Good Examples of Leading by Influence, Rather than by Formal Authority
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-01
Almost everyone dreams about being in charge. In part, that's because they imagine that everyone will jump to fulfill their every whim. If anyone actually tries to lead with that style, they are headed for big problems.

Russell Palmer understands that leadership is all about adjusting to the situation and drawing upon shared interests to get good results. He demonstrates that point best in this book through his personal examples of leading Wharton Business School as its new dean and while managing partner and CEO of Touche Ross. If the other examples in the book were as compelling as his own, this would be the ultimate book in leadership. But those other examples aren't nearly as instructive as his own.

I would observe that such a book isn't really needed except that those who coach CEOs in training tell us that leaders have a hard time learning to lead when they don't have complete authority. If you know a hard-driving talented manager or executive who yearns for a bigger role, this book could add helpful perspective.

russell palmer comes to the topic of ultimate leadership with a very unique set of credentials. palmer was a managing partner of a top wall street firm for many years, he served as the dean of the Wharton School of Business, and he, in more recent years, has begun entrepreneurial ventures. i think, in the middle ages, we might've called him a courtier. the book that he offers us is well balanced between providing insights on management and techniques and skills sets that work or, in some cases, don't. the clarity with which he describes the sets of skills necessary for success is crystal. most of the skills he describes are not unknown to you, maybe a couple might surprise you. with his diverse career experiences, he brings unique and unequivocally brilliant insights, explained in simple terms. one of the marks of success, i feel, of any book that is read, is that it motivates the reader to aspire to higher and greater forms of leadership, whether on the corporate board of the fortune 50 corporation or the rural PTA. this is an outstanding contribution to the literature on leadership and is recommended for those who aspire to make more of themselves. i don't think that it is tremendously scholarly or erudic, good for some readers and not good for others. it is simply, eloquently, practical, informative, entertaining, and inspiring and well worth the purchase, new. be sure to actually read it and not decorate your bookcase with it. you'll be glad you did. i shared it with other members of our management team and it has been very well received.

Although Russell E. Palmer may not be as well known as some of the prominent figures in contemporary leadership such as Jack Welch, Ram Charan, or Peter Drucker, his insights are just as useful. Palmer draws heavily on his widely diverse and highly successful business experience over numerous decades to provide a thoughtful and practical leadership primer.
One of Palmer's main themes is that leaders should tailor their methodologies to fit the particular context or situation in which the leader is engaged. Thus, for example, Palmer argues that the methods that work well for the CEO of a Fortune 100 company would not be equally effective for a managing partner of a professional services firm such as a large accounting firm or an educational institution such as a president of a university.
Overall, Palmer provides an insightful and thorough examination of leadership from a variety of perspectives and various contexts.

A Helpful Book for Congregational Leadership

Review Date: 2008-05-22
his book is written to the business culture in America. Books with a business mindset can be helpful or pointless for the ministry context. A helpful book from business is "Good to Great" and a unhelpful book from business is "Winning" by Jack Welch. This book falls between these two examples. The book is written by a man who knows how to lead. This is a nice difference from some of the current leadership books that are written by experts in academic organization. This author is a leader who has been successful in multiple leadership contexts. Some of the situations that are discussed are not applicable for a minister in a congregation. Churches do not run like top down leadership organizations. The best chapter and the most helpful was the section on "Peer to Peer" leadership. This chapter dealt with the common situation in most congregations. It would be a great chapter for preachers and elders in the church. Peer to Peer leadership is the mode of operation in most congregations because people are volunteers. People are free to come and go as they will. The last section of the book is worth the price of the book. It talks about how to properly motivate workers, but is easily applied to motivating the servants in a congregation.

The qualities of leadership and how context requires you to adapt them

Review Date: 2008-05-19
Russell E. Palmer has had a long and distinguished career. He became CEO of Touche Ross & Company (then one of the Big Eight accounting firms), served as a director on 12 NYSE listed companies, Dean of the Wharton School, and is now Chairman and CEO of his own investment firm, The Palmer Group. He has actually done much more than this, but the point is that he knows leadership from his own practical experience and from what he has seen others do in an up close and personal way. This book is not an academic exercise. Palmer also writes well, so his presentation is clear and concise. Another helpful aspect of the book is the broad list of contributors the author has sharing their insights into the topics most applicable to their experience.

No, Leadership isn't simple. If it were, it wouldn't be so rare and we would not have so many books written about it or courses offered trying to teach it. The author first offers a concise definition of leadership, while being very clear that there are many different styles of leadership. Some work better than others, but they all have similar underlying principles. These are: embodying personal integrity, context driven execution, understanding that in normal times you change what is ready to be changed and then move to the more areas of greater resistance, that leaders have to be ahead of the followers (but not so far ahead as to lose contact with them), and that the point of leadership is releasing human potential.

An executive manager who is also a leader will foster innovation, understand the goals of the followers and use those to meet the goals of the organization, and a sound leader will also possess good judgment. He or she will be personally confident and inspire confidence in followers, will know how to build a rational compensation and reward system, will be an effective communicator, embody good conduct and provide a good example to his or her company, and be a differentiator to their company's success.

The seven chapters showing how leadership needs to be executed within varying contexts are the heart of the book and make fascinating reading. Palmer demonstrates why certain styles of leadership work well in some contexts and not others. He also is able to explain why a leader who is experienced in one style of leadership has an easy or hard time transitioning to certain other contexts. For example, someone used to highly centralized command and control might not be quite as comfortable in a context requiring consensus building.

Do not think of the contexts as either good or bad. They just are and must be managed. The trick is to get the right leader and for the leader to understand the context and act effectively within it. Sure, the leader can transform the situation, but some organizations have a long persistence of culture regardless of the context of a given time period. The contexts Palmer covers are: the top down organization, an organization of peers, the organization in crisis, an organization in need of transformation, the entrepreneurial organization, the academic organization, and the role of national cultures and leading in a global environment. I found all this to be fascinating stuff.

The last two chapters discuss how leaders motivate workers to follow and do what needs to be done while building your leadership capital instead of burning through your credibility. The last chapter recapitulates the qualities of a leader in terms of what was discussed in the text.

I would think anyone interested in management or leadership in any way would want to read and learn from this very useful book.

If any American leader is known for using wit and humor in difficult situations, it is John F. Kennedy. He knew that ANY situation can be made palatable with the proper use of humor. I approached Tom Antion's book (and videotape) with the same skepticism I use in all such purchases and was very pleasantly surprised. Tom has produced a basic reference work that will serve in any situation. I'm sure it would have been in JFK's personal library, just as it is now in mine. In preparing JFK and leadership speeches for delivery anywhere in the world, I routinely consult Tom Antion's reference works. I recommend them in any format as the foundation for a professional approach to communicating with others.

I have taken advantage of the latest market volatility to confirm my long-term financial strategy. I ordered several books from Amazon on asset allocation and using low-cost index funds or ETFs for investment.

Rick Ferri's books (I also ordered his new ETF book) are well-researched, complete guides to sensible, long-term investing. He avoids the fads, and provides information in clear, understandable terms without all of the emotional "hype" present in many books about the capital markets.

In my opinion, Mr. Ferri's prior books (and the articles he has published in journals for financial professionals) have made me a better investor.

I highly recommend All About Index Funds.

This book does a good job of explaning the concept and history of index funds as well as the emerging presence of EFT's

I liked John Bogle's 1994 book on mutual funds better, but his book touched on facets Mr. Bogle's book did not. Of course that book was copyright 1994 IIRC.

I learned about indexing and the various indicies they emulate as well as the advantages and pitfalls of EFT's

A worth while read.

Members of AAII [...] have access to the 2007 EFT review which is excellent at analyzing the catagories and expenses of the various EFT's.

I value Richard Ferri's books and this one is no exception. While the writing is easy to grasp, it is most complete. The book covers just about everything you need to know to master investing in index funds or ETFs.

Although the book is not about allocation (Ferri has a great book on that subject), it does discuss it. He shows how to actually cut risk by using a more aggressive approach.

I found the history of index funds most interesting. But I also appreciated the discussion of tax advantage in indexing, the different benchmarks, bonds and commodities.

This book can make you money if you read it, study it and apply it to your own investing. The more you know about and understand index funds and their close kin, ETFs, the better able you will be to profit by using them.

Highly recommended.

Objective chronicle of a nation's collapse

Review Date: 2007-06-10
This book examines the economic history of Argentina from the early 20th century to 2004, with an emphasis on the time period from 1989 to 2002. The focus is on the financial sector of the economy, and how actions by the government and international financial institutions first ballooned Argentina's economy over a decade, and then collapsed it in just under 2 years. The point of view is from the top, as the book follows multiple important figures throughout this time, including officials at the IMF, officials in Argentina's government, and financial bigwigs in the US and Europe, both public and private.

The author is quite objective and impartial, and lays blame all around. The IMF gets some blame for not being more forceful in getting Argentina to change its ways. International banks and lenders get blame for contributing willingly to the financial bubble of the country. And the Argentinan government gets blame for refusing to consider floating its currency, devaluing it, or restructuring its debt before it was too late. Unfortunately, it was the citizens, mainly poor and middle class, of Argentina who took it in the pocketbooks. All in all a great book, with equal emphasis on economics, public policy, and historical analysis. I highly recommend this book.

This is a short book, easy to read and boy, does it deliver! An account of Argentina during it's economy's heyday and the fall, this book is a fascinating read. It starts off with a brief review of Argentina during the late 1800s and early 1900s but jumps right on the main topic after that. The author explains in extremely lucid prose (no finance knowledge required whatsoever) how the economy was fueled by international funds and how it went bust. Excellent examples, and written like a thriller ... 5 stars all the way!

Another Winner from Blustein

Paul Blustein may have have created a new genre: the real-life financial crisis thriller. Having dissected the Asian financial crisis in "The Chastening," he now turns to Argentina in "And the Money Kept Rolling in (and Out)." The book tells the fascinating story of how Argentina, after being lionized as the poster child of free market reform in the early 1990s, became hooked on foreign debt that ballooned far faster than its ability to service it. The outcome was default and financial ruin in 2001-02, with vast economic hardship for the Argentine population.

As in "The Chasterning," Blustein's narrative is clearly-written and based on in-depth interviews with decision-makers in government, the IMF, and the financial community. He takes aim at perverse institutional incentives and herd-behavior among investors who poured money into Argentina long after it was clear that the country couldn't pay its bills. This profligacy encouraged an attitude of policy-complacency in Buenos Aires that made the final reckoning all the more painful for foreign bond-holders and Argentines alike. Highly recommended.

This was a very interesting book about the IMF and its dealing with Argentina. Argentina has had a colorful past of financial blunders including one in 1890 which almost brought down Barings Bank when it defaulted on its bond payments. So it was not surprising when Argentina bankrupted again.

Not only does this book have the inner workings of the IMF with regard to Argentina but it also contains some short stories of average people and the catastrophies that befell them because of Argentina's currency devaluation. I found it interesting that because Argentina guaranteed an exchange rate between its currency and the dollar that a lot of people had taken out loans in dollars which proved to be disasterous when the peso was devalued.

All the information about the behind the scenes action of the IMF was very insightful as to the inner workings of global financing of emerging nations. The author did a good job bringing home the facts and helping the reader get to know the players in both the IMF and the Argentine government. In summary this was a good lesson on the economics of what debt can do to a country.

The book looks at the role of the IMF, US treasury, private markets, and the Argentinean government in the overall downfall of the country. The author writes very well about his subject and has a good understanding of international economics. The IMF is not completely vilified as it is in many of the current financial crisis's and although it shares a large amount of the blame the book hands it out equally. There is quite a bit of conspiracy theory and engaging in theories behind the IMF and Wall Street as well as the Bush administration. The author acknowledges in most cases that these are conspiracies but they did not really need to be discussed. The most interesting part of the story has to do with the role that the markets played in Argentina. It is an interesting foreshadow for the future of emerging markets and looking at the self fulfilling prophecies of debt and equity. This book deserves its credit for focusing on real issues without engaging in much ideology or theory. If you want to understand how financial markets are impacting areas overseas this is a great book to start with.

Wonder who bought this for "Only Sixteen?"

While their cover of Only Sixteen was all over the radio, I wonder how many folks bought the LP after hearing that song, and discovered this stoner classic? This is music to listen to with a lot of friends, with plenty of various libations on hand. A true party album.

As usual, the album contains great Shel Silverstein penned classics. Shel was at the top his game, and Dr. Hook delivers the songs with skillful wit. Interestingly enough, Dr. Hook as a band was bankrupt, and this album very well could have been their last. The success of Only Sixteen saved them, but alas, instead of more songs like The Millionaire and I Got Stoned, they went.... DISCO!!!! Bankrupt turned out to be the last, great Dr. Hook album. And what a great one it is!

Every bit as good as I'd remembered it to be

I love this album. I saw the 'Hook' in 1974 on The Old Grey Whistle Test doing it and was blown away - I went out and bought it the following day. The Millionairre is excellent, I got stoned...... just me at the time. I've just ordered on CD from this site - delivery in April - I can't wait. I've worn out 6 copies on 33 over the past 30 years. The only other album I've done that with is Neil Young Harvest

This album holds so many memories of my teenage years as I used to listen to this when going to Speedway with my brother. I have been searching for this to add to my collection of CD's and this is the first place I have been able to find it. As for the songs there isn't a bad one amonst them "Levitate" truly does lift me high, "Only Sixteen" reminds me of when I was ONLY SIXTEEN and "Millionaire" well listening to it will make us all feel like MILLIONAIRE'S

Since I named my son Graham after Bill, I thought perhaps I should know a little bit more about his life. I now now know alot more!

It is written in a narative style which makes it very easy to read. The stories are told by the people who were there, some happy, some sad ,some very funny.

If you are interested in the life of this man or even the history of modern day Rock and Roll Concert Production, how it started and evolved, I highly recomend this book.

This book is a little weird (to me) in concept but it works out really well in the end. The book goes from Bill's early days in Nazi Germany all the way to his death with no major stone left unturned. Lots of great stories with very little in the way of punches being pulled. I mean Bill really tells you what he is thinking. Very uncensored. Covers the drugs and the behind scenes stuff with no BS involved. Shows the guy for who he was, warts and all and lets him and the people he is talking about retort one another which I thought was weird in a good way. This book is of great interest to anyone who has probably gotten to this point in reading reviews. If you are interested in this type of subject then this book is a must.

This book is structured so that as Bill Graham comments on different times of his life, he allows the persons hes speaking of to comment in the next paragraph. This makes for some very interesting reading. Grham discusses his time in Korea and killing the enemy. This experience allows him to have an abundant amount of courage when it comes to dealing with band managers in the future. Bill discusses Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Zeppelin, the Stones, J Geils Band, Santana, the Who and all the tense dealings with each of these personalities. This book could have benefitted from better pictures of the bands. Thats my only critical comment.

A Unique Value Creation Model

Review Date: 2007-01-16
Business is an essential part of our lives. Doing business consciously, Fred Kofman, a co-founder of the consulting firm Axialent, is an essential part of living consciously. The author presents a business model where managers are more conscious of the inner and outer lives of employees.

Anyone who works intuitively understands there are two types of managers. As a professor of accounting, Kofman begin his classes by having students listen to one of Beethoven's pieces over and over. Gradually the students would realize that the music was not in the CD; but in the listening. In music as in business, Information's only value is in how it is interpreted.

Most recognize the need for smart employees with the latest in technical competency. Kofman argues it is more important, and less recognized, that organizations recruit and retain employees with high-level consciousness.

He draws a contrast between unconscious attitudes and their conscious counterparts. They are:

Unconscious Attitudes.....................Conscious Attitudes
Unconditional Blame.......................Unconditional Responsibility
Essential Selfishness........................Essential Integrity
Ontological Arrogance.....................Ontological Humility
Unconscious Behaviors....................Conscious Behaviors
Manipulative Communication..........Authentic Communication
Narcissistic Negotiation....................Constructive Negotiation
Negligent Coordination.....................Impeccable Coordination
Unconscious Reactions.....................Conscious Reactions
Emotional Incompetence...................Emotional Mastery.

These qualities are simple to understand; yet, they are difficult to implement. They represent common sense; yet, they are not found widely in common practice. They seem natural, yet they challenge deep-seated assumptions individuals hold about themselves, others and their world.

Kofman opens the reader's conscious to a unique resource for maximizing profit and potential in the workplace and beyond. Written concisely and coherently he communicates an uncommon wisdom about the truth of our emotions and healthy interpersonal practices in business and life.

I can't think of anyone who shouldn't read this

The hard part about starting or running a business is not the long hours, the tight deadlines, or the stresses of being overworked in the face of an insecure future. The real challenges that make or break us surround dealing with our own integrity, our priorities, and conflicts with others.

This book covers those challenges and offers many tools and examples of how we can manage them and come out ahead having built a stronger foundation and a stronger company.

I personally can't stand the idealistic tones of the book but I will admit, unlike most of these books that I have read, this one is much more grounded inthe harsh challenges of reality such as the fact that, while in business and in dealing with others failure is not an option but success is not always achieved.

If you read this book you will find yourself referencing it as you deal with life on any level because the authors clear mind and direct language gives you the language to describe and communicate the situation and how best to manage it.

CONSCIOUS BUSINESS

Fred Kofman does a good job explaining his concepts, however his accent can be a little disconcerting at first. If you are a Landmark Education graduate, the material on these CD's is very nearly a rip-off of the same concepts (i.e., having Integrity, Honoring your Word, etc...). For non-Landmark graduates, these CD's cover many soft-skills concepts that can be effective in your personal life, but he applies them (a little obscurely) to a work environment. If you are trying to get your own business off the ground, "Conscious Business" does not offer strategies for doing so, but rather best practices to remain successful. In other words, you won't find tips regarding how to file your returns, collect data effectively, or document discipline. You will instead find tips about the importance of keeping your word, how to stop stressing about work, and things of that nature. The program was not bad--in retrospect, I would have found it no more than $15 worth of value. Take that for what you will.

Written by Fred Kofman (co-founder and president of Axialent consulting company), Conscious Business: How to Build Value Through Values is a straightforward guide to applying conscious awareness to its fullest extent, recognizing the needs of others, and effectively expressing one's own needs order to build responsibility, integrity, leadership, and reputation - all of which are invaluable tools to a business' continued success. Drawing from real-world examples by such famous companies as Microsoft, Yahoo!, and much more, Conscious Business reveals how being mindful of fundamental human virtues and even "spiritual" questions such as "Who am I?" and "What is my real purpose here?" are positive, empowering assets. A clarion call for balancing fiscal obligations with ethical and moral responsibilities for increased success in all dimensions of business life.
