Weather Books

I'm a geologist who needed to learn about tides -- not something that is directly related to my field. This book is amazing. It has clearly answered all my questions with enough depth to be incredibly useful, yet also with enough clarity and simplicity that a non-specialist should have no trouble whatsoever understanding the subject. It's well indexed and extremely well organized, it comes with many helpful figures and graphs, and it's written in a style that's easy to read. It could be one of the best text books I've ever consulted, in any subject. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in this topic.

This is an excellent book on stratospheric chemistry and transport. It reads much more quickly than the denser "Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion" reports issued by the WMO, but it still includes all the important details. Even though it specializes in stratospheric chemistry, many of the concepts can be applied to tropospheric chemistry as well. Highly recommended.

My daughter and I read this book at night before going to bed. We both enjoy the book very much and even laugh at some of the poems. It has become one of our favorite books

This amiable board book is one of four in a weather series about Chloe, the white cat. In suitable simply illustrations and phrases, Chloe enjoys the wind, along with the clothing and pretend games that go along with it. Very young children will both learn from and enjoy this fine offering, as well as others in the series. This is one board book that actually caters to the intended audience of tiny children, as opposed to being a more complicated picture book for older children that has been watered down and resold by marketers.

This is an excellent little book and the start of an excellent series. It covers the chronology of major weather events and also how measuring instruments came about. The glossary is extensive and includes more than the usual text, with lots of charts and photos. A quick read with tons of chronological data up to 2003 (second/revised edition).

Cinnamon & The April Shower is a bilingual (English/Spanish) picture book entertainingly written by Amy Crane Johnson, superbly illustrated by Robb Mommaerts, and translated by Eida de la Vega. It's spring and the forest is filled with newborn animals and reawakened plant life. Pearl Squirrel, Lewis Cardinal, Cheri Cardinal, and Cinnamon (a friendly black bear) engage in a flurry of activity with their woodland friends when Solomon Raven warns them to seek shelter and while explaining the importance of rain for animal and forest survival. Children ages 4 to 8 will be informed even as they are being entertaining with this carefully crafted book that is a "must" for school and community bilingual picture book library collections.

I loved this book! Fox reminds me of Alice Munro sometimes and Lorrie Moore other times. The characters are all disconnected and desperately trying to change that, and their stories are beautiful, wry, and moving. It was very moved by the book. Get it now!

I bought this book while writing my thesis about the New Madrid Earthquake Scare of 1990. Iben Browning, who co-authored this book with Nels Winkles, was crucified by the press and the "professional" scientists about his supposed earthquake prediction of a major quake along the New Madrid fault in 1990. Rather than being the crackpot depicted by the media... I discovered that Browning was a brilliant and gifted scientist with many discoveries and patents to his credit.. this book describes his theory of how climate change has affected history. Its a hard read but worthwhile.. it's some thing that should be studied more by the historical community.. by the way Browning thought that human caused "global warming" was pure bunk!! JH

This book gives a readable scientific account of the climate we live in. If global warming and other forms of climate change are a "natural" hazard, shouldn't we be even more worried about its consquences? A great read!
