This book is a fantastic read for those just getting their feet wet into the world of cycling. This book covers equipment, maintenance, bike fitting, nutrition, and much more - including group riding etiquette. If you put the skills explained in this book to good use, you will become a better rider. The author uses a very conversational writing style and doesn't put you to sleep with incessant jargon. If you're new to the sport or just need a refresher on a few things, buy this book - you won't be disappointed.

A great book for new cyclists

This is a great book for those just starting to cycle or for those who wish they had a little more knowledge about the basics. Dr. Peveler begins with the bike its components and fitting. Next he illustrates the various types and designs and what it means for the rider. I have never seen a cycling book help the rider with this very important aspect of cycling. More over, there is helpful information on the body and different kinds of trainings - leg speed, strength/hills, endurance. Very readable with sound advice. A large part of the book is devoted to riding skills and communication. So for those who have ever wondered what they should be doing in a group ride look no further, this book will help answer those questions. And what is more Dr. Peveler demonstrates various exercises that will strengthen the rider and increase endurance. I've been telling my training partners about this book, maybe I shouldn't, so I can surprise them with my new skills!

Sunny Forecast for this book

I've always been fascinated by weather and its changes. However, having spent my whole life on the West Coast (and almost all of it in California), I can't say I'm that much of a "weather expert." I remember living in San Diego in the late 1970s and having a weatherman describe a passing storm front as a series of "squall lines." I always wondered what exactly that meant. While this book may not define "squall lines" specifically, it does go a long way in explaining our weather. And after reading this book I still may not be a weather expert, but I'm definitely much more knowledgeable about it.

I like the Idiot books because they explain a subject in some depth without going overboard, but at the same time don't "dumb down" to the point of telling cutesy jokes to get a point across. This book is no exception. Taking on weather topics from wind and rain, how violent storms (thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes) develop, how air pollution affects us, "global warming," even how a day to day forecast is put together and how to become a TV weatherman are done in a light but still informative style. There's also some excellent reference material (weather glossary, weather maps, etc.) at the back of the book too.

An excellent introductory book about weather and one that I can refer to time and time again.

A great learning tool!

This book was very interesting. It is great for people of all ages. It answers any question you ever had about the weather, and you don't even have to be a scientist to understand it! It would make a great gift too!

Poems that endure

This is a book I read and return to, its poems like pearls, crafted and luminous. Walton's resonant voice recalls at times August Kleinzahler's, Wallace Stevens', and A.R. Ammons', but is maturely individual as well. Whether he pays homage to Etta James, draws in the natural rhythms of Maine, or evokes characters from a Midwestern night shift, the poet guides his material (and indeed this reader) where it is already inclined to go, namely towards the spirit of survival as it runs a footrace with the ordinary and extraordinary elements of life. Walton delicately but deliberately shapes a kind of comfort out of the discomfort of mortality. To me, it is a book about quiet resilience, and Walton deftly fingers creative production as a means both to make sense of and form that stunning characteristic.

Cricket Weather is a collection of poems and prints of the specific. The poems range in subject from music to nature to the study of the human mind, each full of details that engage the reader. Walton's sense of timing and sound in the lines of his poetry is clever and concise. This is a small book of carefully constructed poems that the reader can enjoy on the first read, or with more study, can understand the layers of their construction. I highly recommend it.

This is one of our favorite books. The drawings are warm and clever. The writing is easy to understand but not condescending to children, and I love that they enjoy learning about nature. We read it over and over.

You can't go wrong buying anything by Jim Arnosky

I especially like this one because it goes through all four seasons of the year. He includes puzzles, hidden pictures, quizzes and activities. His illustrations are beautiful!

I also like his "Guide to Knowing..." series.

And "Drawing from Nature" and "Drawing Life in Motion" (I think that's the title).

Then there is "All about Deer", "Rabbits & Raindrops", etc.. Just click on his name and check out all of his titles (some unfornately have gone out of print). Check your library for those or try to find them used.

Just chalk me up as being a HUGE fan of Mr. Arnosky. Bet you couldn't tell! : )

One would think that after sailing for over 50 years one would have learned almost all sailng tips and techniques.

Sailing With Class presents a few very simple concepts that many sailors tend to ignore or forget.

If you cannot attend Stan Zimmerman's seminars, do yourself a favor and buy the book.

It's too bad the All-Star reader series is no longer being published. This line of books is one the best tools I have found to help my children when they are starting to read. They have interesting story lines, but with enough easy "sight" words to encourage the new reader to keep going. The star stickers they get to put in the front of the book each time they read it, is a great incentive, and gives them a feeling of accomplishment. What a great idea to put the reward chart right in the book! Then in the back every time they know a new word from the story, they can color in an empty star beside the word (every word is there). Can't beat this series for giving a child positive feedback and interesting beginning stories they can read. Good colorful illustrations help to keep their interest in the story too!

Excellent story line.

I have searched and searched for the just the right books for my kindergartner. This series of books have been perfect. This book has a very good story, which has been hard to find in beginning reader books. It also has a reward for reading the book, evey time you read it you put a gold star (which are provided with the book) on the inside front cover. This has been a great incentive for my son to read the book and read it again. The words are just on the level of a beginning reader but it also has a very good story.

I read this book as a bedtime story for my young son. The text flows nicely and the pictures are soothing and natural. He usually asks to read it again when we're finished, sometimes a third time. I think he has been dreaming about being in the desert in the pictures.

Great children's book!

This book has very good illustrations of the typical American desert animals (gila monster, jackrabbit, etc.) My six-year old has requested it every night for the past week. I tried it out on a cub scout group yesterday, and they were rapt at attention. Their favorite is "find the hidden animal." I recommend it.

This is such a great book for young children. My son loved the story and was so excited to turn the page to see what was going to happen next. He now wants to go search for his own "diamond" next time it snows!

A Darling Keepsake Book

When Mole emerges from his hole one day, the woodland is covered in snow. Even more marvelous is the magical "diamond" that appears at the base of a tree. It is beautiful and shiny, and it changes shape in his paws. He can't wait to show it to his friends!

Jonathon Emmett's gentle story is sure to delight young children, especially during the winter months when (if!) there is snow on the ground. Adults will be charmed by the simple fascination with one of nature's special gifts. Sweet woodland illustrations by Vanessa Cabban will further endear this book to children and "designated readers."

DIAMOND IN THE SNOW is a darling picture book that should find a cherished spot on family bookshelves everywhere.

My son used this book as a reference for a science project that involved raising spadefoot toad tadpoles. This is a picture book with a very simple story, but the excellent illustrations depict the toad's lifecycle and unique habitat. We have enjoyed watching the spadefoot toads for years. They appear in droves after big summer storms, lay their eggs, and disappear almost immediately.

This is a lovely book. Very well written, with delightful illustrations. My daughter begs for me to read it to her over & over again. It taught me new things about several animals, and it's fun to read aloud. We love it.

I bought this book for my 9 year old son who is a Weather Channel Fanactic and weather in general. It is smaller sized so it is good for the car or suitcase and it's thick. Tons of information, charts, graphs and illustrations. I assumed by the colorful cover it was more for kids but its really for every age. My son is just pretty smart! :) This is a great book, most books by Dk pubishing have been very good books and well above expectation.
