I am a huge fan of "24" and I collect 24 merchandise. This guide does a great job in breaking down each episode. It gives you all the major points you need to understand. When I ordered this book that's what I expected. However, I didn't expect all of the extra content. The first 28 pages are full of behind the scenes info about the shows conceptual design and how it was created. There are interviews with the shows producers and with Kiefer Sutherland himself. I highly recommend this to any fan of "24". It is a must-have.

Mike and I over at 2GuysTalking:24 have been waiting for a book like this to come out for years now. Our only complaint is why so long? This is a gorgeous book to have in your collection and is chalk full of all kinds of 24 data, background info, interesting tidbits and if that's not all, tons of great photographs to supplement.

The look and feel of the book is something you really want to get your hands on and keep. Its got more of a "Tab Newspaper" style feel to it then your ordinary book. The pages are laid out nicely and each page represents one day in the life of Jack Bauer! Each day has its own timeline of events similar to our own "24 in 60" segment we do in our podcast. A great reference guide if you need to go back to look something up.

Each day featured on a page layout also has a section where they link interesting pieces of information that you might not already know about 24. For example, the $200,000 Mason was accused of skimming in the first season is linked to his son in the second season. Pieces like that really present a whole new perspective to the show that you may not catch when watching it.

Mega Kudos goes to Tara DiLullo for writing such a great book. You definitely want to get this in your collection. Mike and I were so impressed with the book we decided to have Tara on the show to ask her more about what went on behind the scenes and what to expect in the future. Check it out at [...].

The Final Word on Doctor Who

I have collected many books about the Doctor Who series. Books about the plots, books on the history, books on the Daleks and so on. These series of books, About Time, are the final word. If you just became a fan don't bother with the other books. Buy these books. And if you are already a fan dump all the other books into a Black Hole, or sell them on Amazon.com, and buy up these books.
The first book deals with Seasons 1 to 3, the First Doctor, and really gets into the details about EVERYTHING. The characters, the actors, the plot, the writers, the social and historical events that shaped each episode. Not just the origins of the show but the origins of each and every episode. Plots, merits, flaws, sets are dissected, broken down, and debated about. 288 pages of Doctor Who. Get it used or new.

love it!

They said complete and they mean complete. This is not a book for the novice. This is a highly comprehensive look at each episode, from the Unearthly Child and onwards. Each episode is examined for it's own issues, then looked at in how it fits the series, and how it fits the culture of the day. It's so detailed, this book only makes it through the first three seasons and there are a total of seven books covering the orignial series and I'm guessing we'll get the new series soon (he does mention the 2005 season).

If you are a detail junky, this is the book for you. The cross referencing of the culture of the day, BBC politics, actors issues, development of the story and so forth are facinating. It's kept me turning pages and running to order the next installment. It's a definite must for the hard core fan.

not only of the start of a great show, but also details British television history and pop culture to put it into a larger context. Sometimes academic, sometimes fanwankish, but never tiresomely pedantic or boring. Can't wait to pick up the next volumes.

It's so great to see Doctor Who making a resurgence. I've been avidly acquiring the DVDs as they come out to replace the four drawers full of rapidly decaying VHS tapes on which, as a high school student, I recorded every episode that aired on PBS. So, though I don't think I've ever reached the heights of rabidity of some, I guess you could say I'm a big fan of the series. And now I've been able to read a priceless manual for the fan--About Time. In it, Wood and Lawrence fulfill every desire of those of us who have spent much of our lives mulling over the series.

Compared to some of the other volumes in this series, I would expect that this one would be somewhat less popular. There are good reasons for this, of course. Primarily, this is because it covers the first three years of the series. These years of black & white transmission where many of the episodes have been lost struggle in popularity with some of the later Doctors. Which is too bad because, as the authors point out, the series was very experimental during this time as it set the tone for what would be common ideas as the series wore on.

For those of us who have a love and respect for Hartnell's tetchy Doctor, however, this book is fantastic. I, for one, was very interested in getting the background of stories about which I knew very little because the episodes were lost. Additionally, the authors simply offer a wealth of information. Not only do they provide facts about plot, cast and characters, but they also offer their point of view through analysis of continuity and "things that don't make sense" as well as critique of the stories. There is also a series of essays that look at some "big picture" questions like what makes the TARDIS work? can you rewrite history? what's the dalek timeline? did the BBC actually like Doctor Who? and many more.

If there's a problem in reading this book for me, it's that I am, unfortunately, rather young and certainly American. I never got to see these shows in their first run as they were designed to be seen. Nor do I understand some of the references about British TV, movies, and actors, which I'm sure are quite familiar to some readers. Still, I wouldn't have passed up reading this book for anything. I'm already working my way through volume 2.

Lonely Pamela lives on Oak Farm with her two aunts because her father is always traveling for his work. After her father breaks yet another promise to take her away, he gives her an amulet that was passed down from her grandmother. Soon after, Pamela meets Ponyboy, a wild boy who lives in the woods with a herd of dainty pastel ponies. They spend wonderful summer days practicing circus tricks on the ponies. When Ponyboy goes into the sinister swamp to rescue the smallest pony, Pamela is forced to face her worst fears and things are never the same for her at Oak Farm.

I first read this as a child and the image of beautiful blue, pink, gray and gold ponies prancing across the meadow has never left me. Truly magical.

As a child, I read and reread the Season of Ponies, then tried to entice my friends to read it. It's hard to describe the author's ability to so subtly weave the magic, and the belief in that magic, into the thin novel, illustrated with just pen and ink. But surprisingly enough, the colors are what I remember most, the colors the story evokes with the hope of a beautiful magic. Now I have a daughter, and with some effort I tracked down a copy and read it to her. And again, after all these years, I was as affected by the magic of the beautiful cloud ponies as she was. The writing and the story are wonderfully rich and riveting.

Alone Yet Not Alone is an inspiring story of faith in early America. What is more is that it was written by a young author who is a descendant of those in the story. Tracy Leninger did an excellent job at capturing the emotion of two young girls living away from their family for many long years as Indian captives and then being united again with their loved ones. You will not soon forget thier story.

"Alone yet not alone," is one of the most readable books I have read. After chapter three it is impossible to lay it down. It assumes Christian virtuues, values, and actions, and presents them in such a way that it makes you want to assimulate them into your own life. It is a definite must read for all early to late teens and will be enjoyed by adults as well. The book will probably become a staple in Christian family libraries.

Horn Book
May/June 2004 -
Roemer invites young guests--both newly independent readers and pre-readers--to celebrate the seasons in this unusual collection of concrete poetry. In the spring, "The Happy Gardener" is busily at work:

"I take my little rake and my hoe, hoe, hoe;
And break up clods of dirt in each row, row, row.
I scatter tiny seeds as I sow, sow, sow;
With water, sun, and patience, seeds will grow, grow, grow."

Set in four vertical rows within a brown plot of soil, this poem, as do most of the others, depends on the background art to complete the concrete picture suggested by the arrangement of words. Far from intrusive, these illustrations provide images that will help youngsters to better understand the poem shapes. A triangle of words creates a tent in the summer poem, "Camper's
Prayer:

("Starlight, shine bright
on my little tent tonight.
If it should rain, and skies turn bleak--
I pray my tent won't spring a leak.");

the shape is reinforced by the illustrated background, showing a forest set against the night sky and allowing the triangle to encase the backlit silhouettes of a parent and child.

For new readers, this is an excellent introduction to concrete poetry, while the physical patterns of the words will help younger children connect the sounds they hear with word shapes they see. And the gift of that pre-reading skill is a party favor to cherish. B.C.

Dancing Leaves

Crimson and coral
And yellow as butter-
We reach up to snatch
Waltzing leaves as they flutter.
Hip hip hooray
For fall's festive confetti!
Let's heap the leaves up and jump!
Are you ready?

Picture those charming words falling like leaves across the page. Come To My Party and Other Shape Poems is a volume of thirty-eight seasonal concrete poems. There are very few collections of children's poetry whose focus is specifically on the concrete form. Ms. Roemer's poetry dances across the pages and in the imaginations of her lucky young audience. Her poetry form is enhanced beautifully by the playful illustrations of Hideko Takahashi. This would make a lovely edition to any children's library. I hope this talented new poet doesn't make her growing audience wait too long for her next collection.

Words come alive in this beautifully written and illustrated picture book. Reading poetry is fun in Come to My Party, where the words become the pictures. This is a kid-friendly book from the types of poetry written as well as the bright and bold illustrations. Words make up a jump rope, a flock of geese and a snowy hill. Children will delight in this book and ask to read it again and again. The good thing is that it is fun for adults to read too! It celebrates not only the seasons, but the essence of being a kid! www.weeonesmag.com

What a great way to present poetry -- through shapes! The text of each of these poems is cleverly patterned like its topic, with adorable illustrations enhancing them. For example: a poem about rain has the words drizzle down like rain drops and then form the shape of an umbrella. The poems themselves are fun and representitive of some of childhood's most engaging activities and holidays. Poet, Heidi B. Roemer, has a true poet's ear that taps into the heart of children. Hideko Takahashi's illustrations of children of all colors are irresistable. Her bold and muted coloring seem to find the right balance to add even more delight to each poem. This book would be great in the classroom when studying poetry. It's a great way to introduce new poetry styles to children. But, it's also fun to read and look at. If this book doesn't get young ones hooked on poetry I don't know what will!

Title: Danny and Life on Bluff Point
Author: Mary Ellen Lee
Ten year old Danny is very small for his age, and not very strong. This fact bothers him greatly. Still, he works very hard on the farm where he, his mom and dad and three sisters live. He does his chores and helps his father, along with the hired man, in the woodlot during the winter. Danny loves his family, including his aunts, uncles and cousins, visiting whenever he gets a chance and helping where he is needed. He enjoys his life on the farm and encounters many adventures. For all his small size, Danny is far more capable than he knows.
Out working with his dad, Danny takes a break to look for deer. His dad will need to shoot one for their meat this winter. He encounters a cougar that is also watching the deer. Lucky for Danny, the cougar is far more interested in the deer, but the warning he is able to give his dad, helps tremendously as the cougar continues to hunt close to their home. An incident with their team of horses proves how brave Danny is when faced with the need for his quick actions and small size, but dealing with a bully is almost more than he can handle.
Mary Ellen Lee has delved deeply into her family history to develop an enchanting story of childhood in the late 1800's. She brings her delightful characters, particularly Danny, to life through his thoughts, emotions and an in depth knowledge of life for rural children in that time period. This novel, recommended reading for children 8 to 12 years, would be a perfect addition to any school or classroom library. This is book one in the series.

I bought this series for my son as we live near Bluff Point. I pre-read them for content. "Life on Bluff Point" books are great reading on many levels. There is a bit of history, as well as daily life and lessons to be learned with in these pages. You do not have to be a local person to enjoy Dannys journals. My son liked the family dynamics of this era, with its joys and conflicts and I liked the many subtle lessons on good behavior. Reading about the daily chores and responsibilities of the children was an eye opener for my ten year old, as was the fact that all these years later, boys will still be boys.

What better way to experience history than through a firsthand account! Author Mary Ellen Lee has loosely based this novel on her grandfather's journals. She has creatively combined some real-life people and events with a dash of fiction to bring young readers a taste of this time period.

Ten-year-old Danny lives on a large fruit and livestock farm in upstate New York. The year is 1894 and life is decidedly different than today. These pages chronicle his everyday actions as he helps out at home, interacts with his parents and three sisters, and goes to a nearby school. Written in the first person, young readers will see things through Danny's eyes and might find their own eyes blinking in astonishment!

The book has a delightful cozy and conversational feel as Danny recounts ordinary events. His daily routine starts with many farm chores and ends with a family supper. A description of his school and studies, as well as his recreational activities, all provides a true sense of the time period. Danny's life is physically hard, and as a small boy he often struggles with the tasks that are set before him. His perseverance and courage provides many excellent examples for young readers to follow. Danger is often before him, which is seen with startling clarity as he comes face to face with a cougar. He also deals with a bully at school, and takes a higher approach to solving this problem than just using his fists.

This book is simply written, but leaves a lasting impression. These pages offer a fresh look into our own world, as it was over 100 years ago. Danny's family life and activities subtly speak of profound issues like morality, honesty and faithfulness. Young readers will spend their time wisely and wonderfully with Danny.

Danny & Life on Bluff Point is a delightful story of farm life in upstate New York State in the 1890s. As readers share 10-year-old Danny's everyday life, we can feel the essence and warmth of family life and values of this loving, caring family. Today's children reading this book can learn how life was different in Danny's time but how the attitudes toward family and community are still very necessary in their growth years as they become responsible adults in our world. Danny has chores to do but he also has fun. I hope he doesn't grow up too soon! I am anxiously awaiting the author's next "Danny" book.

Danny and Life on Bluff Point is a story based upon the real life accounts of her grandfather in 1894. The author's father, Danny, is an average ten year old boy who yearns to become a man and make his parents proud. The only son in the family with three sisters who try his patience. A boy who does okay in school but has a bully that makes his life miserable. Basically, Danny is a pretty typical boy who finds himself in not so ordinary situations- like coming face to face with a cougar.

Danny and Life on Bluff Point is reminiscent of the truly timeless historical fiction accounts about the old west and life in early America that continues to intrigue every new generation of readers. That the stories are based upon true events and that the characters are realistic helps add a fresh aspect to this traditional type of literature.

The late nineteenth century springs to life once more in E Dee Merriken's tale of a young man of humble background whose closest contact with the game of his dreams is copying down the next week's baseball schedule from borrowed newspapers, or being invited to pitch in pick-up games by the local Mexicans because he can speak Spanish.

This is more than a sports novel. It is a splendid piece of period fiction, in which the reader can hear the strike of boot heels on hardwood of porches and storefronts of Norwalk, and taste dust on dry lips on its arid streets. Dream Season takes place in a century before time-saving luxuries such as cars and telephones, but which allowed the luxury of taking all morning to pick up the mail. It is in this simple time and place that one glimpses the athletic potential of young Walter Settle--a potential better appreciated from our modern perspective than by the young man himself, who has never seen an actual professional baseball game until his eccentric aunt hatches a plan to take him to Los Angeles for just this purpose.

Walter is so un-worldly, in fact, that he must ask the adopted uncle with whom he shares a bedroom the meaning of the word "Negro." And Uncle Frank is a black man.

Norwalk is populated by pioneers, a preacher, Mexican ballplayers, a Jewish tailor, Walter's drunken father and cultured aunt, and a husband-wife team of thief and con artist, all wrapped up in a story line that is truly a gift. Give it to someone you know who appreciates a good read. Better yet, treat yourself. The baseball angle makes it tempting to call Dream Season a homerun, but this fine book reminds us that even a walk can be gratifying. Enjoy it.

Dee Merriken sure knows her baseball! I'll admit it; I never was much of a baseball fan before Dream Season, but just like I learned to appreciate a Mozart opera by digging into its construction and evolution, I grew to appreciate the intricacies of baseball by watching (so it seemed) Walter Settle perfect his pitching form. I have to thank Ms. Merriken for whisking me, with the ease of a master storyteller, into this by-gone world of fast pitching games and slow Southern California life; wheeling & dealing owners and dedicated preachers; and exciting minor league and nail biting small-town baseball.

Dream Season is a must-read for baseball aficionados, history buffs, and people like me who can't seem resist a well-told story.

Dream Season is one of those books that lets us peek into a little corner of American history and savor what we see. A 14-yr-old son of a pioneer family dominated by a Bible-strict father happens to be a pitching whiz. Add to that a theft, a fire, some social prejudice, and a weathered-board look at the early days of Los Angeles County--and, oh yes, an eye-opening take on the infant days of Natonal League Baseball. Put it all together and the result is an instant remembrance of what we are, and how we got here. I recommend it highly.

I totally enjoyed this book, it's ideal for a newbie Flyers Fan as well as a seasoned veteran who was with them through thick and thin; like the 1974 and 1975 Stanley Cup years, the six year playoff drought, the Pelle Lindberg accident, et al. I would recommend this book to anyone.

I have read hundreds of hockey books in my life, and no book comes close to Full Spectrum. It is the ultimate book for any Philadelphia Flyers fan anywhere, at any time. Even if your not a Flyers fan or even a hockey fan, you will enjoy this book. From the beginning of the NHL's most succsful expansion team to the 2 Stanley Cups in the mid-70s to the 35 game unbeaten streak in 1980 to the sad death of star goalie Pelle Lindbergh to the firing of Bob Clarke in 1990 to the long story of the Eric Lindros trade to the trade for John LeClair and Eric Desjardins in 1995. The book also includes a brief story of the 1996-97 season, the first one at the Core States (now First Union)Center. This book is the best Flyers book around and is my favorite.

I have really enjoyed this book. One thing I like about it is a daily study with scriptures to back it up. I like to sit and read each morning with a cup of coffee and my bible. I really recommend it as a daily devotional.

I would like to give some compliments to this book, I once had a copy, but am now trying to reaquire another. Charles Swindoll has devided his book up into 144 essays so a person can read 3 a week. Some of my favorite essays is called the electronic drug (reference to television) taliking about how TV can be so mind numbing almost like some of the illegal drugs. And the other essay refers to consistency. Charles Swindoll talks about being consistent in daily habits toward toward virtues like kindness, generosity etc. Also choosing to be diligent in working your way to a goal. This book may not be a quick road to wealth, but it can lay the foundation for the use of other wealth building books. I highly recommend it.

Charles Swindoll talks about life and spirituality in a down-to-earth, easy-to-grasp fashion. He shows a keen understanding of the human condition...it's strengths as well as weaknesses. He suggests practical, sometimes fun actiivities after every chapter to start the readers on their way to true, meaningful change. A very helpful guide to daily living....
