The collaborative effort of Timothy Josling (Emeritus Professor at the Food Research Institute and Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for International Studies, Stanford University), Donna Roberts (Senior Economist at the Economic Research Service, US Department of Agriculture), and David Orden (Senior Research Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute and a professor in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University), Food Regulation And Trade: Toward A Safe And Open Global System is a seminal and ground breaking study which examines the current state of regulation with respect to the increasingly global food system. Analyzing the underlying causes of trade conflicts precipitated by conflicting national interests as well as such emergency anomalies as the outbreak of "mad cow disease", Food Regulation And Trade outlines the steps that need to be taken in order to ensure that food safety and open trade become not only compatible but mutually supporting. With the use of illustrative case studies, suggestions for improving regulatory authority performance, the focus on what international institutions can do to coordinate international efforts among developed and developing countries, the necessity for international rules focused on reductions in transaction costs, Food Regulation And Trade is a timely and critically important contribution to corporate, governmental, and academic International Economics Studies reading lists and reference library collections.

Fascinating Bites
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-28
What is "the food system" and do we want one? Reminds me of hospital dining or "mystery meat" in the high school cafeterias of yore. But here we are: the food system describes the biological, economic and political, and social and cultural intertwining of processes by which people and food come together. This is a global construct, "developed, run and promoted worldwide by economic institutions in the rich and powerful nations."

Tansey, a visiting research fellow at England's University of Bradford, and Worsley, director of the Food Policy Research Unit of CSIRO, Australia (and we don't know what that organization is, sorry) have seemingly put together a truly unique book. It examines everything and everybody from the key players in food production, farmers and workers, processors and distributors, and consumers, to legal, scientific and technological control of food, with, understandably, heavy emphasis on findings from the UK, Australia and New Zealand. The book's most easily accessed information comes from numerous fact-filled boxes, so labeled, with headings such as "Ancient Rome's bread and circuses," "breast milk is best milk", " the Euro biscuit," "mind-mapping," "targeting children," "Norway's food policy," "unwelcome food bugs and their effects," "per capita spending on fast food in selected countries, 1992," and so on. Fascinating "bites" on a range of food subjects.

A must have for your vehicle

This manual is the first resource I go to everytime I need to work on my truck. The information it provides is informative and very helpful. It does NOT give incedibly detailed information about many things but provides the right information to get you started in the right direction. With the slight variances manufacturers make from year to year. (i.e. wiring diagrams, fuse locations, etc.) it would be almost impossible to cover every detail. With this manual, some background knowledge, and some additional resources, you should be able to do any task you have the motivation, and tools, to undertake.

No Better Book For a Worker on the Foundry Floor
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-13
This is a great book for the foundry worker that wants more background about his/her job. I work in a foundry and often didnt understand why i was doing certain things(eg, what exactly does inoculate do and what does it consist of?) My knowledge of the foundry was strictly mechanical, without exactly knowing WHY i was doing certain things. This book was a great enlightenment as far as my work goes. It is easy to understand without being "dumbed down" as so many technical books are today. It is a small book(especially given the price) but every page is packed with helpful information and it is well worth it, especially if you work in for a foundry.

The only book on the subject, and a good one.

How many times have you seen one of those big old French marble clocks for sale at auction or in a shop? Were you intrigued by the craftsmanship, curious about the history, or just impressed by the size? Wonder no more, now that Nicolas Thorpe has written this useful guide to these relics of a past age.

These clocks were made during the 1830 to 1930 period, and they fall into my definition of an investment antique. They were expensive when new, still useful, and won't be made again. Yet they seem undervalued in the market. Thorpe discusses the aesthetic, historical, and practical aspects of these behemoths. Much of the book is a simple, practical course in cleaning and restoring these cases and movements. It is directed at the LAYMAN, not the expert. If you have never repaired a clock, if you are reasonably handy you can follow Thorpe's directions and do it right.

Even if you only own one French marble clock, you should have this book. Whether it's a petite boudoir timepiece or a fireplace mantel juggernaut, your understanding and enjoyment will be enhanced by this book.

A Great Non-Fiction Book for Young Readers and Pre-Readers
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-02-13
This book is a very interesting short explanation of the processes involved in making blue jeans. It uses simple words, but is not a dumbed-down narrative. It's great for that budding process engineer in your household - the one whose favorite question isn't "Why?", but "How?"

The book is illustrated with a variety of stock photographs, many with children as the focal point. This helps grab and maintain youngsters' interest.

Since blue jeans are a common item in most kids' lives, this overview of where they come from can serve as a springboard for many interesting discussions of where other everyday things come from.

The book does contain some unfamiliar words, but at about one sentence per page, the book will not frustrate newer readers - probably 2nd grade level or advanced 1st grade level. It's also a great book for reading to younger kids.

Highly recommended.

Fun with David E. Carter!

Enhance mental imagery on any printed project by experimenting with fonts! In "Fun with Fonts," David E. Carter shows you how to "speak" to others simply by choosing the appropriate type font for your project. More than 170 complete type font alphabets are featured in his book, along with an amusing application of each. The designs and color combinations are whimsical and the anecdotes are delightful!

As a journeyman typesetter for nearly 30 years, I'm a self-confessed font lover - Carter's book satisfies my font"sweet tooth!" He even goes as far as addressing this "addiction" by offering the names, addresses, and phone numbers of the firms selling these designs!...
