I purchase this book to learn more about ESD control and management. This book contains recommendations, best practices and procedural models that really help me look at the EPA in the context of quality control and management. i recommend this book to plant managers, repair center managers who would like to get an understanding of the context of ESD program management. The book provides information on audits checklist, ESD standards implementation, ESD layout, ESD cost justification, etc.

Review Date: 1996-08-16
I am somewhat biased for my review of 10. This book is out of print and has been replaced by Handbook of Pulping and Papermaking. The first 20 chapters of the second edition are unaltered except for some clarifications where necessary. The second edition adds about 300 pages on wet-end chemistry, colloid chemistry, printing processes, optical properties of paper, wood and fiber anatomy, and issues of processing and process control

Excellent dictionary for Medieval Textiles
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-22
This is an excellent book on Medieval Textiles. The dictionary not only describes the textiles as identified by cloth names from the period, but often has photos of examples.

Written in French with no English translation, it is still worth the effort for an English speaking person to painstakingly translate the passages one wants to know about.

There is a new edition out. It is exhaustively revised and available in Europe. Hopefully, Amazon will soon show both new and used copies on its website.

I think this book explains very well how the economic integration in the Europe affects on the Korean consumer electronics firms. In particular, the empirical survey is very useful for not only Korean firms but also firms in other less developed countries, which consider to make FDIs in the Europe.

I agree with Michael Feldman's take on this book: fascinating! The author takes you into the world of how things are and were being made at the end of the twentieth century in the American Midwest: dolls, insulin, gyroscopes, caskets, steel, veneer, cookies, globes, glass, and cars. In the process she fabricates essays of lyrical beauty, a fitting tribute to the well-made objects she explores.

Excellent reference for the 19th century cotton industry
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 1999-07-25
This book is unique in its subject matter. It helps today's reader understand the importance of the entire cotton production, trade, and manufacture.

Ms. Willoughby writes that the cotton trade's impact rippled over many other segments of the national economy and she quotes from another writer that this fiber has been called the most significant ingredient in the economic life of the whole nation [United States] before 1860.

The book describes the connection of cotton to currency and to banking and shows in detail how the banking system was vastly different from our present financial institutions.

The author stresses that much of the cotton business depended on the reputaions of individual men from the planter to the final purchaser and she gives short biographical descriptions of many key individuals.

Transportation facilities were vital to the moving of the cotton from the farm or plantation to the mill. The book describes the importance of vessels and shipping in every phase of the process and also the part that the early railroads played in making important changes in the entire ecomomy.

I would give this book a 10.

Things you won't find anyplace else
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2000-05-30
This book is full of things you won't find anyplace else, maybe because most of them haven't been around for a hundred years or so. The book is like wandering through a living museum. We bought a country place a year ago and this book (and Farm Devices, Harris on the Pig, Farm Conveniences and fences, Gates and Bridges, all of which we also own) are exactly the right thing if you want to add an authentic touch to a porch or a barn. My friends love reading through them. I enjoy them immensely. The "introductions" are wonderful, too. There are three by Dennis Boyles and they are the best - hysterically funny!
