The definitive history of harpsichord makingReview Date: 2006-08-08
Worth reading repeatedlyReview Date: 2003-05-30
Hubbard's book, though nonfiction, has a kind of plot: he documents a slow-moving miracle of instrument-making that took place in Europe over a period of several centuries. Hubbard follows the important changes in building practice as the centers of innovation shifted from Italy, to Flanders, to France, and finally to England and Germany.
This book is a beautiful example what can be accomplished by scholars in the humanities--it's careful, rigorous detective work. Hubbard's endless labors made possible the lovely authentic harpsichords we enjoy today.
This is not a book for everyone, but if you're one of the many people who once put together a harpsichord kit, I'm almost certain you will enjoy this book.

Must Read For Any Transactional Six Sigma StudentReview Date: 2006-01-27
Transactional ExcellenceReview Date: 2006-01-26
Many businesses forget or ignore the impacts that need to be made in their "transactional" processes much to their detriment, Mr Windsor has written a work which brings to the fore an urgent need for companies to address these processes, he's also supplied the tools and techniques in a wonderfully simple way.
This book ought to be a priority buy for people at all levels in business. Senior managers ought to encourage those in "Transactional" processes to get this book. Much better would be for Mr Windsor to teach these revolutionary concepts and further breed his fresh approach to business excellence.
Most certainly one of the best transactional business books in years !

THE BEST BOOK ABOUT CIGARSReview Date: 2000-04-23
The best source on cigars that I could find for a beginner.Review Date: 2002-02-20
The beginning of the book goes into such topics as tobacco, how cigars are made, shapes, guide to sizes, cigar quality, purchasing, counterfeits, packaging, labels, bands, cutting, and of course smoking and more. A fair sized book with 256 pages. I bought my copy off the bargain rack and to this day, I would have paid twice as much for it.

A very fine work for Pipe-lovers!Review Date: 2000-06-27
By the Ultimate Pipe LoverReview Date: 2004-04-27
Hacker's dedication of this book to Joan reminds me that the first pipe I ever owned was a Father's Day gift. There was a paw print on the card indicating that our dog, Jacob, had given me the gift. I understood. It would be a couple more years before our oldest daughter was born.
Since then the number of my pipes has expanded and some have been retired. Before I read Richard Hacker's book, I knew that I liked to smoke a pipe. But my interest does not match Hacker's by a long shot. What might one want to know about pipe smoking? The origins? How to pick the right pipe? Pipe accessories? Collectable pipes? Hacker puts it all into his book.
Though I smoke a pipe myself, I have to admit that this book is by the ultimate pipe lover.
