The definitive history of harpsichord making
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.

A definiteve study by one of the leading exponents in the contemptorary rediscovery of the harpsichord. Strategically illustrated. Exhaustive bibliography. Reading this book will immerse you in the past practices of harpsichord-making, from sawyers and lumbering to varnishes and decorative painting. Amazingly juicy, written in a very engaging style. If you want to know the difference between the German and Flemish makers and their instruments, for example, you will find out about them here. I first read this book when I built a harpsichord kit in my teens. For a kid who hated history, I could not put this down. Hubbard exposes the reader to a well-hidden side of music-making. Stay away if you hate anything baroque or eloquently discursive.

Frank Hubbard had an amazing combination of talents. As a harpsichord builder, he was one of the principal founders of present-day harpsichord-building practice, which produces superior instruments by imitating the masters of long ago. Hubbard was also a fine scholar: thoughtful, careful, endlessly knowledgeable, and often witty.

Hubbard's book, though nonfiction, has a kind of plot: he documents a slow-moving miracle of instrument-making that took place in Europe over a period of several centuries. Hubbard follows the important changes in building practice as the centers of innovation shifted from Italy, to Flanders, to France, and finally to England and Germany.

This book is a beautiful example what can be accomplished by scholars in the humanities--it's careful, rigorous detective work. Hubbard's endless labors made possible the lovely authentic harpsichords we enjoy today.

This is not a book for everyone, but if you're one of the many people who once put together a harpsichord kit, I'm almost certain you will enjoy this book.

As an accounting manager, I have found this book to be extremely helpful in increasing the efficiency of my staff and the overall performance of my office. The book's ease of use allowed for rapid implementation of some of the Six Sigma principles for problem solving. The user-friendly text made a complicated technical system realistic and accessible to this lay person. I highly recommend this book for any professional who wants to improve the quality of the work environment.

Transactional Excellence

I sincerely hope this first release from Samuel Windsor is not his last. He has shown a magnificent grasp of his subject matter, which he's made simple to understand in this book. I have read through the book twice, the author, seems to have the knack of making you feel like he's living his subject. Truly excellent.

Many businesses forget or ignore the impacts that need to be made in their "transactional" processes much to their detriment, Mr Windsor has written a work which brings to the fore an urgent need for companies to address these processes, he's also supplied the tools and techniques in a wonderfully simple way.

This book ought to be a priority buy for people at all levels in business. Senior managers ought to encourage those in "Transactional" processes to get this book. Much better would be for Mr Windsor to teach these revolutionary concepts and further breed his fresh approach to business excellence.

Most certainly one of the best transactional business books in years !

THE BEST BOOK ABOUT CIGARS

Review Date: 2000-04-23
It's really a great book to people who like to know everything about cigars. It has information about more than 200 cigar brands, 100 colour photos and many more! No more comments, it's really the best book about cigars!

The best source on cigars that I could find for a beginner.

This is a great book! Opinions are based as a newcomer to cigar smoking. Its biggest attribute are the pictures through out; even though one of the cigars being built appears to be a counterfeit, page 35 (Cohiba). The cigar directory has just about every popular brand from every major contributing country. The pictures in this section are fabulous. Each different size is clearly shown with crisp bands. Also each brand is accompanied with a summary about itself.

The beginning of the book goes into such topics as tobacco, how cigars are made, shapes, guide to sizes, cigar quality, purchasing, counterfeits, packaging, labels, bands, cutting, and of course smoking and more. A fair sized book with 256 pages. I bought my copy off the bargain rack and to this day, I would have paid twice as much for it.

This is an excellent work by a man that appreciates good cigars and pipes. Both cigar lovers and pipe lovers will find this book enjoyable and useful. Mr. Hacker is also deliciously politically incorrect, which makes it even better.

"To paraphrase that venerable corncob connoisseur..." So begins the Foreword to Richard Hacker's book. And out of due reverence, I picked up my corncob pipe, packed it with my favorite tobacco, and began to indulge myself in a pleasure that I have known for years.

Hacker's dedication of this book to Joan reminds me that the first pipe I ever owned was a Father's Day gift. There was a paw print on the card indicating that our dog, Jacob, had given me the gift. I understood. It would be a couple more years before our oldest daughter was born.

Since then the number of my pipes has expanded and some have been retired. Before I read Richard Hacker's book, I knew that I liked to smoke a pipe. But my interest does not match Hacker's by a long shot. What might one want to know about pipe smoking? The origins? How to pick the right pipe? Pipe accessories? Collectable pipes? Hacker puts it all into his book.

Though I smoke a pipe myself, I have to admit that this book is by the ultimate pipe lover.
