Luminous Landscapes exceded all my expectations. I was fortunate to attend Gloria's workshop in 2004 in Durban, South Africa and enjoyed every minute. It is wonderful to have the book now to refresh my mind, to give more inspiration and to learn new techniques. The book is very good worth for money and very well and clearly illustrated. Instructions are easy to follow. I can highly recommend it to fellow-quilters.

This book is one of the best I've seen. There are some well written and well-organised sections dealing with the principles of composition, colour and stitching techniques. Gloria usually starts her landscapes with a painted background, so she gives a short well-illustrated section on fabric painting. Most of that stuff is available elsewhere, but it is assembled and illustrated particularly well.
The second half of the book contains details of her construction methods. One of those is using freezer paper on the right side of the fabric for appliqued shapes. The second - her signature style - is pieced sections on point, blended into the applique design. She gives clear diagrams
and inspiring examples of this technique. She then gives some examples of how to achieve different effects for trees, water and reflections. There is a gallery of student work, and two fully illustrated projects with paper patterns included at the back.
In my view this is excellent value, a perfect blend of practical tips and inspiration.

Lots of ideas.

I like this book because it shows me lots of different ways to make designs on fabrics. I can use them in my own designs. Don`t have to make copys of others designs.

Just as the title describes, this book is filled with luminous, georgous quilts and every secret you need to know on how to make your own. Gloria has given detailed instructions and methods on how to create every aspect of landscapes, backgrounds, forgrounds, sky, oceans, animals along with details on how to combine fabrics, apply paint and she has even included patterns. This book is easy to understand and recommended for beginners or advanced quilters wanting to take their creative abilities to a new level.

If you love Gloria's quilts you will love this book. I have done two workshops with Gloria and it is very useful to have this book to put everything she covered in the workshops and more as a permanent resource. It is very detailed so is wonderful for people who have not had the opportunity to attend a workshop.

An uplifting and informative journey of a loving daughter caring for her mother with Alzheimers

Review Date: 2005-08-26
This book is fascinating reading, and very inspirational for anyone who desires to make the most of the time remaining with their loved one with Alzheimers. This is not a "Stage of Alzheimers" primer, but a fascinating memoir of a daughter caring for her mother with Alzheimers. Elinor Fuchs' story is unique because she finds ways to turn the difficulties of her mother's Alzheimers into opportunities for love, care, and family healing.

Elinor Fuchs, a professor of drama at Yale University, seems so comfortable in her mother's fractured world, and finds the laughter within always. One very poignant moment occurs when the author is trying to determine whether her mother would rather return to her home of 30 years, or stay in an assisted living facility. Her mother responds: "Why go back in life when you can go forward."

This book will bring tears, laughter, and wisdom to those who take the time to savor it.

Elinor Fuchs writes of navigating the long-distance caregiver role, first with the help of part-time paid caregivers and then live-in caregivers. Care eventually moves to an assisted living facility and finally a nursing home. Fuchs marks each transition with mixed feelings over meeting her mother's dependency needs while trying to preserve her independence. Fortunately, her loving uncle was available to make decisions with her until his own death. Fuchs' intelligence, good humor, and compassion enable her to enjoy her mother in spite of her limitations. She begins to reframe the meaning of her mother's fractured language: "I see Lil not only as a `patient' and `sick.' But as an artist, spinning poetry of a private world, and I began to carry a little tape recorder to catch these exchanges." As a result, each chapter of the book begins with an excerpt that reveals their playful, wacky, and sometimes profound conversations. This memoir is filled with funny anecdotes that show how her mother retained her essential self well throughout the disease.

This book is a joy to read. More than a narrative about aging and loss, it is a story of love's triumph. "The last ten years," writes Fuchs, "they were our best." If only more family caregivers in the midst of such adversity could grasp such an unexpected gift.

A treat and a tonic...

This is a wonderful book. It's about a downer subject-Alzheimer's---but manages to be funny, inspiring, hopeful and informative about the process of AD. Other reviewers are right---it is a page turner.
So what an achievement---an upbeat, engrossing book about a human tragedy. I've read a lot of first person accounts about the dementia of a relative and this is the best. It should become a classic. And now the author Fuchs, who teaches at the Yale School of Drama, should make a play of this.

Laughter is the key to surviving a mother with Altzheimers. This story is so full of laughter and love that it eases the pain of the adventure, maybe not while its going on, but certainly after the "exit." It's a non-stop read at any stage of the experience even if you got along with your mother just fine.

I was home at my parents house recently for a wedding of a friend. In searching for a t-shirt to wear in my sisters closet I came across a box of books she had used for a children's literature course. Among them was this book. I instantly remembered it being one of the very first books I learned to read on my own. For hours I would read this book over and over pretending I was the little boy in the book being scrubbed by all the different stations. I was so happy to find the book that I immediately grabbed it and put it in my suitcase. I can't wait to for my son to learn to read, I'm sure it will be his favorite as well!!

This was my favorite book when I was a kid back in the 70's. I purchased this for my 5 year old nephew who is learning to read. He likes it too. While the words are repetitive, it reinforces what he is learning as he reads. The pictures are the best part and it is fascinating to see this boy with his mud washing machine contraption, getting cleaned up for dinner. He truly enjoys it and I think it is his favorite too.

We bought this book for my son at 6 months. By 9 months, he was opening it, and touching the pages. His favorite is the back page where he can feel the spiky bale of straw. At 19 months now, he still enjoys turning the pages. He also has the Touch and Feel Dinosaur book in the same series by DK. If you venture into that one, just be prepared for the stickiness of the T-rex's tongue. I've seen it make several adults jump a bit. :-) All-in-all, these books encourage young children to turn pages and interact with books, and they grow with them too. My son will now sit, point and name what he sees, jabber a/b the contents, and let me read the text to him. We liked this tractor book enough for our son that we bought 2 additional copies to give as gifts to friends.

Molly's Newest Power, and Newest Adventure
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-19
"Molly Moon is back from the future-- and this time, she can read minds."

Sometimes, to lose something is to find something. In Molly's newest adventure, she's certainly trying to find something. When things left off, Molly learned a stunning secret about her past, and someone she never knew. This time around, she's trying to find that person, but their fate is something worse than she ever imagined and it's going to take some new power and all of her daring and her courage to unravel this plot.

The opening of the book sees Molly feeling somewhat depressed. Let's just say that she's grown somewhat used to the idea of settling into something resembling a normal life and isn't eager to place herself or those she loves in more danger. But ultimately Molly does what it is right. And the fact that this is *her* adventure sets a different tone from the past stories, when she was rather dragged into danger. Let's just say that Molly is finally taking control of her destiny. And once again, her friend Rocky is along to help her, as is her precious pug, Petula, who must also find new depths of courage and power if they're all to survive this journey.

The story zips along, making for another exciting read. This story features a fun new cast of characters, with some unexpected reversals and twists. Just what is this mysterious mind-machine hinted at in the title? And how will Molly's thrilling new power manifest itself? You'll have to read to find out!

So what's next for Molly? Teleportation? Some other power we can't even imagine? I can't read minds myself, so I can only guess, but I'll be eagerly waiting for Molly's next adventure.

I could reduce the number of service calls I perform by over 50% if the pin owners simply followed this manual. The truth is, there isn't any other book that puts pinball repair in layman's terms. How many pinball owners can actually read schematics? How many really do their own circuit board repair? The point I would stress is that all the repairs in the book can be performed by just about anyone, no kind of previous experience necessary. It is truly an outstanding manual and should be required reading for all pinheads, novice or skilled.

This book has step-by-step help for people who have never maintained or repaired a pinball machine. The book has a full section on general repairs, another full section on fixing flippers, and chapters on what to look for when buying a machine, disassembling and setting up the machine, protecting the painted backglass and playing field, checking fuses and checking batteries for leaks.
The book has information about the balls, rubber rings, locks and missing keys, lightbulb types that should not be used, wiring problems, tips for making the machine faster and more fun to play, and where to find parts and game manuals.
This book gathers all this information in one volume, with a separate terminology section that describes the parts and operations of a pinball machine, a lengthy index, and over eighty illustrations. Highly recommended, best guide of its kind.

If you're thinking of purchasing a pinball machine, this book will give you all the guidance you need to making a smart purchase. If you already own a machine, Bear's book will help you make repairs that you never dreamed you could do without a professional repair person. The explanations and drawings are presented for the novice. If you are a professional repair person, you will still probably pick up a tip or two from this book. I have many detailed repair books for pinball but I keep coming back to this one.

I acquired a 1971 Williams Klondike that had almost no maintenance performed on it in almost 25 years. Mr. Kamoroff's layman terms and step by step troubleshooting technics and hints saved me considerable money in returning a dead game into something special again. His simple approach to what may seem a difficult problem coupled with a everyman's writing style made for not only a handy manual but a very good read as well. I recommend this book to anyone who has an old pinball machine and I would not recommend anyone to even consider purchasing one without reading this book first.

'With hindsight, maybe dressing up as Satan was a step too far, but sometimes I just cannot resist. When a consultant psychiatrist called me to book an appointment to "confront her Catholic guilt", then something inside my head just started shouting "Go on!! She's a psychiatrist! Do it!! Do the session dressed as Satan!!"'

If you like that extract, then you'll love this book. It's a series of bite-sized articles, case studies and "Tales from a neurolinguist's journal" drawn from Austin's practice as a hypnotherapist and former career as a psychiatric nurse.

The book comes with heavyweight endorsement from the likes of Steve Andreas and Bill O'Hanlon, who describes Austin as 'the British Milton Erickson' - although given the degree of irreverence for the psychiatric establishment and the willingness to satirise some elements of the NLP community, "the British Richard Bandler" might be a little bit closer to conveying the flavour of the book.

Published by Real People Press, the Mark Andreas hippy-art cover makes it look like classic NLP works such as 'Frogs Into Princes' and 'Trance-Formations', and it's good enough to stand in that company. There really is an insight on nearly every page. The psych nursing background gives Austin an unusual depth of knowledge of the oft-neglected 'neuro' part of NLP, which provides useful perspectives on disorders like OCD.

Many people will be familiar with the "That's so obvious - why didn't I notice that before?" moments that come thick and fast when you first encounter NLP. I'm pleased to say that after 10 years as an NLP trainer, this book could still give me plenty of those. Of course a decision-making process that uses movies is going to get better results than one restricted to stills! Damn!

Did I mention that the book is often laugh-out-loud funny? He got away with that "Satan" thing too - in fact the client was so pleased with the results that she paid about six times what he asked. One thing I'm taking away from it is to be braver in my changework sessions.

For my money this is the most significant NLP book of the last five years. Luckily it's also one of the most readable. More please!

NLP has taken a lot of heat over the years for not being "scientific". It's not! And, with that being said, Andrew shows us once again, that if you are willing to access the right states, NLP can be a tool to work seeming miracles. More than anything, Andrew demonstrates the willingness to adjust as wildly with his behavior as Bandler, Farrley, Erickson, etc. My hunch is that the "magic" is found in the state of the therapist, and NOT in the technique being utilized. That has been my own experience.

This is a most surprising lesson in the unexpected. Andrew comes up with unique and innovative responses that get the person to think, interpret and change. A forward moving book that readjusts your thinking as you read it.Flexibility and freedom from frozen maps of reality breathes life into this work.Thank you for your courage and inspiration.

I got this book in the mail on a busy day and didn't surface until I finished it some five hours later, smiling. Full of outrageous stories showing therapeutic NLP in action, this book is loads of fun. Although intended for people already familiar with NLP and/or therapy, it's accessible to anyone. I've read it twice so far and learned lots both times. Prepare to be shocked, to laugh, to change, and to look at the world differently after you're done.

This book sets a standard that would be hard to beat. The author knows his subject and the production is superb. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the field covered, and to others as an example of how a book should look.

An excellent review of automatic weapons for the technically inclined. There is little or no operational history involved, but this book's detailed development histories of weapons and their ammunition is more comprehensive than anything I've seen since Johnson's books from the '40s. If you are into the details of automatic weapons and the ammunition they fire, you must have this book. If you are looking for operational military history of how these weapons were employed, this is not for you.

Very informative, easy to read text - not too dry or technical. Great photos & diagrams. Really helps to understand the auto loading mechanisms of many different weapons, their performance data, specifications. Glad to have this in my collection, definately recommend it.

Great book, a mine of information

This book is a very well written history of large caliber automatic weapons. It gives a good coverage of the mechanisms and characteristics of the weapons, but it's real importance to me is it's well illustrated gallery of the rounds used in the weapons, complete with specifications of the rounds and the weapon and country using them, something that is rare to find in other works. In a library of over 1000 volumes on weaponry, this is one of the most used references I have.
