a brilliant 20th century inventor
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-24
In THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF LIFE Paul Heiney introduces us to a lively 90-something gentleman gleefully showing off something he invented -- a folding wooden bench. When Paul also learns that this spry fellow was the inventor of the first successful kidney dialysis machine back in the days before the (...)occupation of Holland, as well as a member of the American team which created the first artificial heart, he is moved to write the biography of Willem "Pim" Kolff.

Nowadays, kidney dialysis machines are so much a part of the medical profession, it is difficult to grasp what life had been like before their invention for people with kidney failure -- a sentence of a horrible, complicated death. As Paul Heiney writes in his Introduction about his first visit to the Kidney Unit in a British hospital: "Like the organs themselves, which lurk around the back of the body, inconspicuously keeping us alive, kidney units are often at the rear of hospitals, taken for granted and expected to get on with their routine task, basking in little glory." (Page 2)

RebeccasReads highly recommends THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF LIFE as a conversational biography, well-researched, rich in scientific details & the dramatic life & times of this venerable inventor.

This book had me laughing out loud and craving a good beer! I couldn't put it down until finished, and thouroughly enjoyed the whole thing, sad it had to end. Ms. Peavey has a wonderful sense of humour and a fresh perspective on life, especially hers and life in Maine, especially hers, especially her life in Portland, Maine. This book and her other, Maine & Me, are both very funny and enjoyable reads. Mainers will especially appreciate them, of course.

Must-have for Bally EM owners. Worth well more than the price....

For owners of Bally EM Slots, this book will prove to be a precious resource in understanding how the machines work, a little of their history, how to clean, lubricate, adjust, and repair. Includes far more detail than most will ever need but that is the beauty of this book; it is very thorough and was clearly a labor of love for its authors. Jam-packed with photos, explanations, advice, and the appropriate warnings. Editing, photos, printing and binding quality are all very good. I only have two minor complaints: an index is sorely lacking and spiral binding would allow the book to lay flat to free my hands for working on the slot machine. Worth every penny and then some....

Quilter or not, Vicki Johnson's techniques will inspire the fiber artist with new ways to express herself. Although the methods were simple, the results are sophisticated. The illustrations of works-in-progress and variations on theme as well as the discussions on problem solving were all quite helpful and well done

Wow! A professor brought this book to class and I had to have it! Featured are early works by Neil Denari--Neil, I love you! (a personal God of mine/director of Sci-Arc) Krueger and Kaplan, Peter Pfau, Wes Jones...a theorists dream! The book is so thin, that I go back and forth in it wishing there were more! A definite must have if you're into theory!

Applied Agile Oriented Book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-08-05
The book is really useful for an agile beginner who knows a little about the practices and wants to apply them to his/her project. The book does not explain the practices in details but it tell you when and how the practice is applicable on different scenarios. The book takes the pattern approach to help you choose agile adoption strategy. The word pattern seamed to me a bit complicated but the way the book describes it made it really easy. One other thing that I liked about this book is it explains the reasoning and the benefits of the agile methodology. It helps you understand how to be really agile and adopt to real life situation. It really explains the difference between agile and any other methodology. It shows how flexible it is, as it lets you pick and choose the practices that will make you achieve your business driven goals. This book shows how to pick and choose your practices and provide a way of measuring your success. It's a quick read too.
