The only Symbolics book you'll need outside of DocEx.

Review Date: 2000-09-20
Symbolics Lisp Machines running Genera have possibly the most complete online manuals of any operating system ever made. They are excruciatingly detailed, erudite, exact, and best of all are completely searchable and browsable. So one may ask why a Lisp Machine user might ever need a book outside of the Document Examiner? Well, despite the vast amount of documentation and the fantastic interactive searching and browsing capabilities of the online documentation, a new user can barely hope to learn anything from them because they are entirely too detailed and complex. Symbolics helpfully provides some simplistic teaching manuals but it's often very difficult to keep switching back and forth between DocEx and the Dynamic Lisp Listener or Zmacs. There's also a fairly large gap between the exercises provided in the Genera docs for a new user to become familiar with the system, and for a programmer to start writing new software. That's where this book comes in.

Although the book was originally written for Genera 7 it is still in most ways very up to date. It provides simple examples of using the Genera system, and how to get around in the network. More importantly it provides lots of information and examples of writing both simple and complex software for Genera. Toy programs are given, along with intricate programs using most of the advanced features of the Genera environment. One of the more entertaining examples is a Solitaire program. Exercises are given at the end of each chapter, and every exercise is well tuned to the expected knowledge of the reader as they progress through the chapters.

The only drawback of the book is that it is somewhat out of date. Instead of object-oriented programming with CLOS, available in Genera 8, the book gives examples in New Flavors, which was superseded by CLOS but is still heavily used in the internals of Genera. New Flavors is however a generic function style of OO programming, which isn't too far from that of CLOS, although the message passing paradigm of Old Flavors is still evident. Other advanced features of Genera only available in the more modern releases of this decade are uncovered in this book as well.

All in all, a fantastic book for anyone who works with Symbolics Lisp Machines to have around. Unquestionably the ideal book to learn the system from and to learn the feel of programming in Genera. Users of other flavors of Lisp Machines may also find it helpful, although the book is unashamedly biased towards Symbolics systems.

I bought this book for my grandson who loves to read, but sometimes gets discouraged by the length of "chapter books." Most shorter books at this reading level are fanciful fiction. This book is not too long, and it's informational as well. He loved reading about a "real man" who invented a "machine" we use daily.

This belongs on every programmer's bookshelf

This is a wonderfull little book that not only introduces the reader to object-oriented programming, but also describes the implementaion of a SmallTalk-like language. The book does not cover the more advanced topics of OO programming, but is an excelent tutorial and introduction to OO concepts. The section that covers the implementation of the language provides hard to find insights to how OO languages work at a very low level. Just as learning another spoken language will aid you in understanding the one you speak, reading "A Little Smalltalk" will help in your understanding of OO languages.

It belongs on the self of everyone who programs in an object-oriented language.

Great miniature quilting book

This has some lovely patterns for making quilts for dolls and dollhouses or other miniature uses. (The only book I know about on the topic, actually.) It gives instructions for cutting the fabics and sewing them together as well as the patterns themselves, so is good for both beginner and someone more experienced. There are over a dozen quilting patterns and some other projects as well, such as name tags, eyeglass case, needle case, checkbook cover, pincushions, etc., and the instructions are very clear.

If you are looking for something a little different, you've found your book! From the full-sized patterns to the subject matter, this book fills a niche that the usual applique books don't. The eight projects, ranging from size 17"x24" to 35"x49", include two unique angels, a jester fishing from a moon, a terrific Santa, Jack Frost, Uncle Sam featured in A Star-Spangled Salute, a charming Fairy Garden, and a rakish Fred A. Scarecrow, all in full-color. Though I would not consider this an instruction manual, and the patterns are probably not for beginners, there is good basic instruction included. Just a delightful book!

Professor George Edward Challenger is the lesser known creation of Sherlock Holmes' creator, Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930). Unlike the cool and calculating Homes, Challenger is irascible, domineering and extremely outspoken. In short, he is a lot of fun to read. However, unlike Holmes, Professor Challenger never caught on and as such only five Challenger stories were ever written. This book combines all five of the Professor Challenger stories together in one book:

The Lost World - originally published in 1912 - 5 stars - This is the greatest, and the best known of the Professor Challenger stories. Professor Challenger has heard of a plateau in South America where dinosaurs still roam, and he loses no time in setting up an expedition to this strange place. However, when the expedition finds itself marooned on the plateau, the team faces many dangers and adventures.

The Poison Belt - 1913 - 5 stars - Professor Challenger has learned that the Earth is moving towards a poisonous section of space, and has figured out a way that he can save a few members of the human race - the last people left on Earth!

The Land of Mist - 1926 - 1 star - The worst of the Professor Challenger stories, this one is really just a polemic, written to convince the reader of the wonder (or whatever) of Spiritualism. This story might have been what killed the series.

The Disintegration Machine - 1927 - 5 stars - A Latvian scientist has created a machine that can disintegrate matter, and reintegrate it again...or not. This is something that Professor Challenger must see for himself if he is to fully understand its ramifications.

When The World Screamed - 1928 - 5 stars - Professor Challenger is digging a well or mine of some sort in southern England, but what is he up to? It seems that the eccentric professor has a new theory - that the Earth is really a living creature!

Although more than a little dated, scientifically, I found these stories to be well written and quite exciting. (Well, four of the five that is.) They reflects a world that is now gone, but is quite interesting to read about. If you like adventure stories, then you will like this one. Read this book, and learn about A.C. Doyle's other hero!
