An Introduction to Machinery Reliability Assessment
Published in Hardcover by Butterworth-Heinemann (1994-10)
Authors: Heinz P. Bloch and Fred K. Geitner
List price: $55.00

Incredibly useful, packed with reliability review checklists
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-08
One of the authors once made the statement that, given permission to take only a single book on an overseas machinery reliability verification or improvement mission, this Second Edition (1994) would be in his luggage. About 100 of its 456 pages comprise by far the most relevant and comprehensive sequence of machinery reliability assurance checklists available to both newcomer and seasoned practitioner of machinery reliability assurance. Both narrative and checklists refect decades of the authors' experience in Engineering Quality Control, also known as NPQC, or non-process quality control. This up-front, pre-procurement and "while being constructed" activity has clearly been a key ingredient of companies building (and operating), safer, better, less maintenance-intensive, and more profitable plants: plants that set themselves apart from their less profitable competitors. The straight-forward, "low fog-index" text is readily guiding the reader through this extremely important reliability assessment activity.

Introduction to Process Algebra (Texts in Theoretical Computer Science. An EATCS Series)

This is a delightful new presentation of Process Algebra, which was much needed since the classic text by Baeten and Weijland is getting outdated. In comparison, I find Fokkink's text more easy to digest, more precise and going significantly further. Indeed, it should be for a theory that has evolved rapidly in the last decade. Process Algebra is on its way to become the tool to build full-proof software that will lead us out of the present day software jungle. I have used this text in my one semester class in Trier and can recommend it to any serious student of computer science.

Isabelle is fantastic, and this is an excellent tutorial.
With Isabelle, all the mystery of math and proof goes away
and everything becomes concrete... just like programming.
The only improvement that I'd like to see is that the
tutorial be rewritten using the Isar proof language.

Blassberg's vindication
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

I was only going to give this 4 stars, as it is quite polemical, but the facts and truths are undeniable. Blassberg has consistently been proven truthful and accurate at every turn.

He was considered a bit of a crank for a while, as no one believed Pirro was as horrible as he described her and she is now turning out to be. He has been the ONLY journalist to stick to his guns and not qualify his convictions with the usual defensive excuse making.

Even defense lawyers who know the truth can't handle the fact that Blassberg knows more and has done more than any of them to bring the truth of Pirro's prosecutorial misconduct to light.

He was a court reporter for years in White Plains NY, and sat in and wrote on every important case Pirro prosecuted while she was DA.

BTW the DA's office hates this book so much they have repeatedly taken down every review posted about it on amazon for years (including my own- this is my second edition!)

PS Blassberg now is editor of his own newspaper in Westchester County called 'The Westchester Guardian'. Not on the web yet, but it will be.

Provides the Basic Theories
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 5 total.

There has always been an interface between man and machine. In the earliest cave man days it was learned that fastening a rock to the end of a stick made a club, or if sharpened an axe. But it is only in the 1900's that the man machine interface began to be really complex. And it was only in the late 1900's that serious work began on how best to handle this interface.

This book was written by pioneers in the field and offers a principled approach to studying human work with complex technology. It describes a conceptual framework for analysis and concrete methods for the design of man machine interfaces where the amount of information to be transfered between man and machine can be analyzed and structured for its best effect.

This book takes a rather theoretical approach to the problem giving few concrete examples. It seems destined to become a clasic in the field.

Somebody knew what boys like!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-04-08
One of my soon-to-be-nine-year-old nephew's first words was "backhoe," so I knew his abiding interest in heavy machinery would make this book of great interest to him! This colorful and informative book is listed as suitable for ages 9-12--I think it's for people of all ages. Even adults can learn from it (it's chock-full of information, and a lot of it I, at 39, didn't know!), and very small children would still enjoy being shown the pictures. The only complaint I have--and it's very mild--is, I wish this book had an index. It would be nice to be able to instantly find the various cranes, bulldozers, hydraulic excavators. But then again, maybe this is a good thing: the book is short and sweet, and paging through to find the exact giant machine you're looking for doesn't take long, and leads to a lot of interesting diversions!
