Steve's book on SOA adoption strategies is absolutely a must read for SOA architects - if you really want to understand what SOA is about. The methodology outlined by him is really worth looking at as detailed out in this book. The methodology will help you get your SOA act together and deliver services that matter to the business - that's where the true value lies!!

Brilliant Family Fun!

Wowee. I've read hundreds of children's books to my children, and this one is the best. `Erasmus James and the Galactic Zapp Machine' is hilarious and brilliant. It's a rarity of a book these days that can be enjoyed by children as young as six all the way up to adults (and everyone inbetween)!

I read a chapter or two every night for three weeks to my daughter (aged seven). She said it is her new favourite and I am reading it again. My son (aged 10) also loved it, he read it on his own in record time. Ditto, me!

`Erasmus James...' is about an 11 year-old boy (Raz) who uses his dad's experimental invention to zapp to another planet: Uponia. On this world, chickens and horses talk and live in peace and harmony with humans. At least, they all did, until Raz turns up! As the fate of Uponia falls into his hands, Raz is forced on a great journey with a lovable Master of Horse Fu named Franklin. There is a lot of laughs, adventure and growing to come!

Every chapter had laugh-out-loud moments, great dialogue, action and revelations. There were also nice messages about family and the environment to make us parents happy too! Apparently, there are two more books to come in this series. We can't wait.

This is a wonderful book for elementary age girls. The reading is fun and light while sending a message that self esteem is something you can find inside yourself. The illustrations are also well done.

Estimation of Distribution Algorithms: A New Tool for Evolutionary Computation (Genetic Algorithms and Evolutionary Computation)

Many topics covered, some chapters are a little weak

This is a good book to learn about Estimation of Distribution Algorithms (EDAs or also called DEAs or Iterated DEAs). These algorithms are similar to evolutionary algorithms, but do not use the crossover or mutation operators of evolutionary search. EDAs instead create a probabilistic model of good solutions and use the model to generate new search points. It's a nifty idea and it works.

Most of the chapters of this edited collection were authored or coauthored by the editors. So, algorithms developed by other people do not get a lot of attention. However, the editors (or is it the authors) manage to include chapters on combinatorial, continuous, and discrete optimization.

There is a section on machine learning applications that is OK, but the last chapter on training neural nets with EDAs is very weak (look ma I used this and it worked...). Except for this chapter, the rest of the chapters in this section use careful experiments and statistics to make their points.

Making the source code available would have improved things and would make it easier for people to try these algorithms.

What a wonderful book for inquisitive children!

This was the very first book I read cover to cover. This is a wonderful book if your child prefers leggos to video games. It's not for everyone, but if your child is in the second or third grade, this book could set them on a lifelong voyage of inquisitiveness and discovery.

GREAT FOR A YOUNG INVENTOR TYPE!

Our 8 year old son is fascinated with how moving parts on machines work. This book has been such a treasure to our family! He has read this book too many times to count, and now has our 6 year old and 3 year old intrigued by it as well. The age range says 4-8, but I think it would easily interest an older child as well. (It is interesting for this Mom to read!) It explains, through the use of "mechanically correct drawings", how things we have in our home, and use in our daily lives, work. I would recommend this for any youth who is curious about the world around them.

Unique contribution for signal processing

The book is excellent. It provides a comprehensive description of evolutionary computation applied to almost every facet of signal processing: classification, clustering, time series, system identification, etc. The final chapter provides some real insight on how to design evolutionary algorithms that is very helpful. The material is well presented and easy to understand. I really like it and the cost is reasonable.

A Must Read For LIR Players!
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-30
I have played using the information that the late Mr. Frome wrote and I found it to be very beneficial! I watched people at a Casino play the game and lose alot of money. By using the information in the book, I was able to take $100 and turn it into $1000 in 20 minutes.

Mr. Frome was the person that had completely calculated the game and the house "edge" so that the Nevada Gaming Comission could allow it to be played in its' Casinos.

The information is invaluable! I recommend this book to anyone that has watched the game and was unsure if they should play it or those that play the game and want to win more!
