I got a few unexpected bonus' with this book. It has a pattern to make a vest with a landscape as well as several patterns. The work is explained and the color pictures were a help in understanding the methods outlined in the book. Good graphics as well as examples are in the book.

My book arrived just 2 days ago and I stayed up late scouring it from cover to cover (had to wait until the kids were in bed for quiet time). I'm not much into quilting, but love creating unique and unusual things, especially wearable art. This book is perfect. If you are a quilter you'll love the ideas to take your hobby to the next level. If you are more of a sewer, you'll be impressed by the detailed (and simple)instructions that make this form of quilting quick, easy and intriguing. To top it off, the book comes with 4 of the authors very own landscape quilt patterns plus another pattern for turning a lanscape quilt into a vest. The patterns alone are worth the cost of the book.

I ran out today and purchased fabrics to make a woodland scene and can't wait to get started. I also happen to be lucky enough to have a top of the line sewing and embroidery machine, so I can use it to further embellish my landscape quilt. But to be honest, with all the great ideas, techniques, thread and fabric suggestions the author has given, you do not need one of these fancy machines to make a work of art. This is a neat, neat book!

For anyone interested in interplanetary space travel or the detailed design of the first spacecraft to travel our neighboring planets, such as Mariner 2 to Venus, then buy this book. The writing is excellent, much better than a typical journal or design handbook. This book reads like a good novel. Highly recommended. I knew the author personally. Oran also taught me to fly gliders, and I worked for him at a wind tunnel near Texas A&M University.

This was my first book in computer game/graphics programming, and the book from which I simultaneously learned C. Though some things are dated, the basic ideas are fundamental. It is well written, well explained, and really fun. It leaves the careful reader who practices the code with a solid background and ability to proceed.

Although some of the techniques in this book are outdated, it is one of the best books I have found that teaches the foundations of 3D computer graphics. Despite having newer references, such as The Zen of Graphics Programming, by Michael Abrash, I often find myself going back to this book to debug my applications and to develop new techniques for 3D graphics.

This book starts with the most basic methods for 3D graphics, and goes through step by step optimizations, ending with the code for a flight simulator. With the understanding of 3D graphics that this book provides, one can confidently tackle the more advanced 3D techniques used in Quake, Quake 2, and beyond.

A great new way to create a beautiful quilt if someone doesn't like to applique with templates. The results are truly different, but very easy to achieve. I would recommend this book to my friends. I just checked it out at the local library last night and am ready to purchase it.

I bought this book used on eBay. When I saw the cover, I knew I had to have it. First of all, there are plenty of how-to photos in color, explaining how to paper piece. It can be difficult to learn how to paper piece, but once you learn, it's like riding a bike ... you don't forget. But it does take time to figure it out. There are 36 quilt blocks, one per page. I love the author's use of color for her blocks. It really makes it look like stained glass. There are more pieces to piece because every black line is another addition. I'm anxious to put together a block or maybe a small wallhanging with four blocks.

Colorful Quilt Patterns Inspired by Stained Glass

This is a book of patterns for quilts that resemble stained glass patterns to produce distinctive, colorful quilts of both traditional and dramatic new designs. This book contains some 36 squares that are described in great detail. These squares are then to be multiplied, perhaps using different colors and patterns, to cover the surface of the quilt.

Along with the patterns is a brief but fairly complete description of how to make the quile. This includes procedures for cutting out the patterns to the actual sewing.

This book is the second in a series produced by the same authors. The first volume, without the II in the title (ISBN: 1891497022) was so popular that these new patters were created.

I bought this book quite a few years ago and have used the techniques described. If you are interested in working non traditionally this book has great ideas for piecing solutions. I use it as a great resource book.

Excellent book for serious art quilters!

If you're the kind of quilter that takes a design and looks for ways to implement it - this book is for you. Although it has a lot of design ideas and inspirations, it's main objective is to teach the reader/quilter techniques to achieve the designs we dream of. I bought it a trifle too late - when I was half way through a major quilt commision in which I needed exactly the techniques described in the book and found that I successfully reinvented the wheel. Still, it helped me a lot. Some of the techniques (especially for curved piecing) could be simplified - from experience. Otherwise, don't hesitate buying it. Pity it is out of print.

Great for beginners

I own several books on gear design and this is one of my two favorites (the other being the Dudley's excellent Handbook). What is interesting about this book is that it feels like a cross between a reference book and a college textbook--so it is very good to study if you're starting and does a fair job as a reference book. My only complaint is that it barely acknowledges the metric system, where there are a few concepts and technical standards which would enrich the content of the book (well, written in the 80s; metric was less common then). Great book if you can find a copy!

Just the best book yet written for someone new to gears

If you can find a copy, this is the best book yet written about gears for someone starting from scratch with no prior knowledge of gears. The book is lavishly illustrated and thoughtfully organized. While it has the rich feel of an art history text book, it is all the time practical, never pompous or stuffy.

Used, the book is almost impossible to locate. The publisher, Butterworth-Heinemann, told me they are planning to release a new edition of this fine, important book in 2001. It certainly deserves to be available once again.

[Update 3/2003] Unfortuenately, the 2nd edition did not happen yet. I've emailed the author, Ray Drago, and he tells me he's been pressed for time by his consulting practice and hasn't been able to complete the manuscript of the 2nd ed. Maybe next year...

Excellent Dalek story. (Wonderfully atmospheric cover art too!).

The Daleks sound very urgent and menacing as though they really do mean business! And with different sounding voices for the different Daleks speaking so you can follow which one is talking. The special weapons dalek, the Dalek Supreme and the Emperor Dalek especially sounding very distinctive, the emperor sounding quite creepy. I loved the character of Mr Elgin, the head librarian, his voice and character were extremely well put across, very distinctive. Sylvestor McCoy and Sophie Aldred played their parts to perfection and the sound of the raindrops and continual rainfall of the planet were also very effective too. One of the best from Big Finish, especially the first two episodes which were quite simply superb. A treat for all Dr Who fans everywhere.

The way Doctor Who should be like!

This is the 2nd Big Finish story I have heard. The other one is available on the BBC as a web site -- "Real Time" (6th doctor Colin Baker.) This is the story that takes the cake!

Even though it's only audio, the sound effects and the atmosphere from this story is superb! It's a storyline with a lot of depth but easy to follow at the same time. Where The Doctor and Ace stop by on the Karcharat Planet to return some library books. The librarian is concerned that they were taken in the first place basically because they contained vital knowledge. Various alien races are involved the story, the Kar-Charratians, Daleks, libraians and explorers like Bev who are after a valuable artefact called the ziggurat.

I guess the attraction to Big Finish is they give a chance to upon the doctor's enemies and characters. For example more information is given on the Daleks' conquest, the Timelord's and the matrix. There are lots of twists and turns to the story, you don't know what's going to happen when Ace leaves the library or when the Doctor is still chatting away with Elgin. Each proceeding episode gets more and more interesting! The varying episode lengths gives more time to give background information as stated before but also with the planets history, it's various environments and life forms. You can't help but being amazed by all the background information and how "3D" the whole story seems! You think to yourself -- imagine if this story was filmed! It would be a Doctor Who classic!

If you don't mind listening to 'lost' Doctor Who stories from the 1960's (thanks to the loyal fans from the 1960's who recorded on audio tape!) well stories like this are a must! I have a lot of respect for Big Finish and sure that there would be lots of other cool stories out there too!

This is a purely unique story. This is exactly what Doctor Who should have been like for Sylvester in the classic series! It feels like this story is apart of the canon!

If other Big Finish stories are like this, I would rate them better than as a rank lower than 1970's Doctor Who but better than how it was in the 1980's!
