Eleanor meets Sue in one of the most delightful of her quilting how-to books. If you're familiar with Ms. Burns' books and/or videos, you know that she's getting better with almost every volume...clearer instructions, more detailed illlustrations, and enticing photos of the finished projects. An added treat in her Sunbonnet Sue volume is the clever series of illustrations featuring the famous little faceless lass engaging in the various steps in quilt-making (Sue earnestly plugging away at the sewing machine, etc.) This would be an excellent addition to a quilting library, and even a great first-time quilt project. Thanks to Eleanor's consistently excellent instructions, you'll be able to follow along with no difficulty...and even a chuckle or two.

I bought this book for myself because of Eleanor Burns. Her books are so easy to understand. The book is in black and white with some color photos of Sue & Sam. You get directions for a wall hanging (18 X 32 1/2) all the way up to a double coverlet (76 X 89). This book tells you how to make the patterns using an interfacing you have to trace the pattern onto. I have gone to Eleanors website and bought the preprinted fusible interfacing. Makes it much quicker and easier IMO. This book reminds me of the quilts my grandmother used to make. A little old fashioned, but you can change how the Sue's and Sam's look by using different material and things like lace, buttons, ribbons, and rickrack. The book does come with a pattern for Sue & Sam and a kite & tie.

A funny tale of time travel paradox.
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.
Review Date: 2000-09-20
This is a genuinely funny time travel paradox story, that really makes you think. It very cleverly introduces and explains the idea of time travel paradox, in a way that even a novice to science fiction could understand, and that a veteran will also learn from. Harrison does this by having plain ordinary people (well, if you can call a desperate movie mogul and a film director plain and ordinary), as the central character. The inevitable nutty scientist, who invents the time machine, has to explain it to them in a way that an impatient non-technical mogul can grasp, and if he can get it, anyone can!

The story is that Climactic Studios is going broke. They need one great epic movie to get them out of trouble. But the banks are breathing down their necks, and they are only days away from bankruptcy. Here's where a time machine comes in very handy! (In a lovely touch, referring back to the unwieldy names early science fiction used to find for things, the nutty scientist calls the machine a "Vraemetron", after the Lithuanian - I think -for time. No nice flowery name, oh no! It's a "vraemetron"!).

What follows is a really funny story of vain Hollywood types, going back in time to shoot a Viking Saga. There they meet the Viking hero, Thorfinn Karsefni, who turns out to be a bit of a slob, and cares for nothing except for booze, food and women (fits in quite well with the Hollywood types then). Barney, the director and hero of the book, travels back and forth in time, desperately trying to avoid bumping into himself, and leaving cryptic clues for people just for the fun of it. The storyline is easy to follow, yet complex enough to keep it interesting. The paradoxes are well explained, yet keep throwing up new problems to be solved. The characters are all well developed, and I really got to like them. When the book finally finished, I actually missed them! Afterwards, it made me want to research all about Vikings, which I did! Just think of the hours of pleasure you can give your friends explaining everything you just learned!

This is a great book - funny, accessible, and intellectually stimulating. Not too long, it's ideal for a train or plane ride, or maybe a nice relaxing evening in front of the fire. Just great.

Technicolor Time Machine is not only classic 60's Harry Harrison (fast, perfect characters, bizarre plots)but an acerbic and dead on send up of both the movie business and the scientific community. Washed up producers, ivory tower physicists, buxom starlets and Vikings--all at cross purposes and all perfectly drawn. Please read!

This book is great for kids interested in tractors or farms. The pages are collage-like and show the tractors in action, as well as really nice close-ups of different tractor parts. There is also alot of information on tractors that most grown-ups won't even know. I highly recommend this book.

Tractor would more accurately be entitled farm machines. Some of the machines described are seed drills, crop sprayers, various harvesters, bailers, hay tredders, ATVs, and monster tractors. The photographs are excellent. One shows a machine where seven people are carried along just over the soil weeding seedlings on an organic farm. The text is full of fun facts. There is a glossary and an index. Karen Woodworth Roman, Children's Science Book Review

This book is very concise and yet includes all of the details necessary for completing a first time quilt or instructing a child to create one of many quilts. I like that there are instructions given on how to deviate from the sample to create your own unique quilt. The tips for teaching children are excellent. The tools and supplies section and finishing techniques are also very helpful. I will be refering to this book when I plan my next children's quilting class. A must have reference for any new quilting teacher.

This book is full of beautiful photos and wonderful instructions. Some great quilt ideas for boys too.

An excellent book for beginners, young or old. I love the variety of blocks, 15 of them in all. Most books for kids do not contain as many. Kids Start Quilting with Alex Anderson, for example, has only 5 blocks to choose from.

The author's other book, Kids Can Quilt is also wonderful and I recommend having them both.

Where other titles limit projects to wall quilts and blocks, this provides larger more satisfying kid-friendly projects for 15 traditional styles and larger pieces.

Debra starts a chapter on binding with the sentence "I adore piped bindings". Thanks to the well-written instructions & great illustrations, I do too! She covers more than piping - making it easy to try some of the other techniques that can change an ordinary quilt into a WOW quilt. This book is definitely a MUST-HAVE for me.

Ricky Tims raves about it

In machine-technique workshops, Ricky Tims refers to this book as his "Bible." Crammed with great techniques, and many are EASIER ways to do things that look NICER than what you've been taught to do. From the cover it looks like a book about applique, but it caused a big reduction in my cursing about binding and finishing.

Twombly Mcgreen Vs The Mean Steam Machine gets better every time I read it. It tells the story of Twombly Mcgreen and the people he encounters, as well as other fantastic poems. Paul Nandzik displays (almost flaunts) his talent by displaying versatility in his poetry. Especially when writing about Twombly and his entourage by changing styles depending on which character he's writing for. This book is worth a read, even if you have no appreciation for poetry.

Managing the unpredictable predictable
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2005-08-22
I like this book, because I don't like technical marketing books that want to make us believe that the consumer is an easy to manipulate object. We all know people act differently in reality after we have asked them so much in research. So why then act as if the research outcome was 'right'? Paul Postma tells marketeers (become human beings too!) how to dare look at the always changing unpredictable 'seaside' in stead of looking at the 'safe' but false thruth of the 'landside'.
Paul does this in a very pleasant style, combining a serious message with light, original thoughts that make us look into the mirror of our marketing 'professionalism'.

Excellent Authorship by Paul Postma

Paul Postma's authorship results in a rare combination of educative and entertaining literary work.
The concepts of the paradox of the beach and hypothalamus-limbic areas-cortex theory stay in memory long after reading the book.

Paul Postma has indeed crafted an excellent piece of text that can be equally enjoyed by academicians, industrial practitioners and also general readers who would like intellectual stimulation without losing humour and interest.

This novel customer-centric approach to management, at times touching neurological concepts, creates new insights in marketing and how to deal with customers successfully.

I'd like to positively recommend this book.
