Solid treatment of techniques. Half a material is repition from Lyons other title. But if you dont have that, its a solid one. Little expensive for its size though.

As a DSP (digital signal processing) practioneer for over 4 decades, I give this book my highest praise. It's an extensive "how-to-do-it" compilation of tips and tricks that lead to efficient processor design. The presentations are lucid and the DSP configurations are well proven and established. This book is a ready reference and is absolutely indispensible to anybody who works in DSP.

I wouldn't advise that students of digital signal processing buy this book. It is a well-written and unique tool for the professional, but it will likely not be useful for students unless you are working on some specialized project or Ph.D. and need advanced and specialized help. The tips are well-written, thorough, and well-illustrated. Part one, on efficient digital signal filtering, will be helpful for anyone from novice to professional. The rest of the book, however, deals with specific and complex topics. Quite frankly, Lyon's excellent book "Understanding Digital Signal Processing" includes most of the tips and tricks in part one and is aimed at the novice at an affordable cost. That book is a much better choice for students. I was looking for discussions on implementation of the arctangent function - don't ask me why - and this was the only book that had an accessible section on the subject. It is THAT kind of book. Have your copy of Oppenheim & Schafer's "Discrete-time Signal Processing" handy, though, because in explaining the details of some of these more difficult subjects the background material had to sacrificed for the sake of producing a compact volume that flows well. Highly recommended for the right audience.

Rich is a unique author in the world of engineering writing. Many years ago, when his first book came out, I was so inspired that I found him. Didn't take too much looking, he was local then in the SF Bay area. I had to tell him personally that his book was awesome! (pre-cliche AWESOME!). Well, he himself turned out be as unique as his book!

"Understanding Digital Processing" made such an impression on me that I have been trying to write a book on communications ever since (chapters at complextoreal.com) If all engineering books were written as well as Rich writes them, we would not have so much fear of sciences and math.

Be be honest, I have just ordered this book. It has not arrived yet. BUT, I am sooooo sure, it is going to a great follow-on, as great as the first. - Charan Langton

Survived To Tell is the autobiography of Edward Keonjian who is the great-grandson of a Russian serf, and was once brought to the brink of death in a German slave labor camp in World War II. Rescued from a mass grave by a lone woman, Keonjian survived, eventually emigrated to American in 1947 with his wife and young son, and went on to become a pioneer of microelectronics. An amazing personal tale of struggle, perseverance, desperate times and the quest to make a good life for oneself, Survived To Tell is a remarkable story from beginning to end.

This is a short, easy to read autobiography of a man who went through a lot of suffering in the first part of his life. This book is a personal account of the horrors of war in Leningrad and the horrors of communism. This is also an uplifting story of a middle aged man coming to America with no English skills and having a tremendous success. The first part of the book describes his life as a slave, the second part is about his life as a free man.

An absorbing account of life in the Soviet Union, pre-WW ll, and during the incredible siege of Leningrad, for those, who, like the author, did not share the privileges and powers of membership in "The Party". Keonjian's subsequent life and career experiences as a scientist in the U.S., and his tales of meetings and friendships with an astonishing array of notables in various fields thoughout the world make delightful reading. In short, the heartwarming story of a remarkable individual whose life's path ran the gamut from incredible suffering and deprivation to international recognition for his contributions to our modern technological society

Christophe Basso worked very hard giving years of his life to produce the best Switch-Mode Power Supply book available, by far. I have a large collection of books on SMPS and although many are very good books, they are not nearly as complete or practical as Basso's book. He derives all his equations and then shows many real world example designs from start to finish. In my opinion and the opinion of many power electronics professionals and power electronics college students, the averaged switch model is the easiest to create and most intuitive to understand and use. Basso has digested the best information from the best references and then creatively enhanced many models and invented new SPICE models/sub-circuits you need for large and small signal analysis and simulations with the SPICE of your choice. His knowledge of creating analog behavioral models (ABM) that perform just like the real components or circuit functions, is amazing. He created ABM PWMs from individual ABM components. Everything he creates, he verifies. You buy this book at a bargain price and get a CD with all the models/sub-circuits you need to check your existing designs and start new designs with the highest confidence. Once you look at his ABMs, you will want to create some of your own because it is so much fun. In a short time, I've used his models/sub-circuits and his techniques with PSPICE to identify lack of or no phase margin in Switch-Mode Power Supplies for a huge corporation. I have many more power supplies to analyze/simulate and several new ones to design.

I've worked as a power electronics engineer for many years and I'm so thankful to Christophe Basso for working so hard and smart to produce the best Switch-Mode Power Supply book ever written. Very thorough and very practical. Get this book and apply Basso's knowledge, techniques, and SPICE models/sub-circuits to your designs and you will never have another unstable Switch-Mode or Linear Power Supply.

Once in a while a book comes along that covers a subject in such detail and yet is chocked with examples that are easy to prove and use by students and designers in the field as this one. It is evident that Mr. Basso went to great lengths to make sure that users of different spice software platforms were included by supplying a CD with models and demos for all the major platforms. I don't know of another offering that deals with closing the feedback loop in the detail as this book does. I think any serious graduate program should consider including this book as a text. Money and time well spent; it is my second reference for serious SMPS work.

Despite I have great experience in other fields, I don't have it in power electronics. I found this book very original and didactic. I gess that his author has a big experience in this matter and hi has also the experience to transmit it. I think is an useful book for any designer that must deal with power electronics.

I have a lot of switching power supply books but this one is by far the best. The author talks to you like a real person not like a computational robot. He speaks as if he really wants you to learn about switching power supplies not just to show you how much he knows. You can tell that he is very fond of this subject and he wants to share it with you. There are plenty of examples and a FAQ section; yes the math is there as well. You can clear you shelves of all the other books because this is the only one you will need.

I have been trying to find a book that explains in simple text how a feedback loop control works. There are two books that I find useful. One is this book and the other one is 'Practical Design for power supply.' In this book, the author went through close/open loop analysis, compensation network, current mode control, etc. He used a lot of pictorial explaination, which is great, as I don't like to read words :) Also it has a good chapter on switching power lose.

The only draw back that I found is the language used. Sometime I will get confused and have to go back and read it a few times. But other then that, I think you will find this book pretty helpful. Enjoy.

Dear Reader

If you are Power Engineer/ IC Engineer / Applications Engineer entrying the field of Power Electronics, or someone who wants needs to re-educate in the field of power electronics I strongly urge you to keep a copy of this text on your desk.

The author has spent many years gathering precious gems which only exist in the realms of universities or so called experts not willing to share the pitfalls of power design. He and has written the material that anyone who wants a good grasp of power electronics will easily gain.

His chapter on stability is definitely worth its weight in gold. Such topics from the various classic textbooks either suffer the formulae syndrome, or basically the cookbook either leaving the reader, confused or tell me more syndrome. He even explains how the Laplace transform is used without having to go into lengthy math analyis, wow. It took me years to learn this.

This book is written in a straight forward manner you have to go through it chapter by chapter to gain the reap the full benefits.

I wish I had this book many years ago, I could have avoided a lot painful hours of debugging power circuitry.

As mentioned in the preface the four areas that differentiate this book from others are (1)only *digital* synchronization is discussed, (2) Maximum Likelihood metric is used throughout, (3) for performance measure the Cramer Rao lower bound is used and (4) in addition to PAM, CPM is considered in detail too.
However, what I like most about this book is (1) its organization where you can directly jump to the chapter of interest with minimum overlap between chapters and (2) its coverage which is very fundamental, deductive and solid, staying away from ad hoc arguments.

This book summarizes authors' works on synchronization in digital comm over the past ten years. There are very few books specifically dedicated to this topic. According to my knowledge, several books on sync are now out of print, and the publication of this book can fill this blank. The most important feature of this book is that it provides valuable information on the sync techniques for continuous-phase modulation (CPM) which will play an improtant role of the next generation of PCS.

Review Date: 2003-03-27
This book covers a wide area of topics in systems and control theory and applications. In addition to the analysis of stability and optimal control in linear and nonlinear systems, the text provides a very good introduction to fuzzy systems, neural networks, genetic algorithms and chaotic systems. As the author states, the scope of the topics presented tries to emphasize the multidisciplinary role of nonlinear dynamics and control. By providing examples where the techniques of fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms and neural networks are used in real life control problems, it is shown how these new approaches complement the classical ones. To this end, Lyapunov's stability theory is employed as the common medium of analysis. This type of presentation facilitates a deeper understanding of the material by bringing the focus of different areas in the context of control and stability problem.
The book is well suited for senior or graduate course work and its comprehensive nature makes it also an excellent reference text for people who are interested in dynamical systems and control theory. A basic knowledge of linear algebra and calculus would be sufficient to understand most of the material covered and a brief mathematical background review is provided in the appendix. The fundamental concepts and how they relate to each other are clearly presented. The detailed worked out examples, taken mostly from literature or practical applications, form an integral part of the book and in some cases, used as a means to illustrate the theory itself. Many exercises, some involving software projects in MATLAB, are also provided at the end of each chapter.
This text offers a thorough and practical treatment of systems and control and provides a solid foundation for anyone in the field and is highly recommended.

A valuable addition to your library

Review Date: 2004-01-14
The important link between modeling and control of dynamical systems is once more emphasized in "Systems & Control" by Stanislaw H. Zak. The book is an excellent addition to the control literature as it revisits the mathematical modeling and analysis problems of dynamical systems while addressing the controller design problem by means of a variety of modern techniques.

Chapter 1 introduces the notion of a system and includes numerous examples illustrating the mathematical modeling of dynamical systems by ordinary differential equations. Chapter 2 is devoted to the analysis and approximate solution techniques of the model equations using phase-portraits, numerical methods, linearization and describing functions. Chapter 3 discusses the linear systems and serves as a warm-up for the nonlinear control methods to be addressed in the subsequent
chapters. Chapter 4 presents a thorough stability analysis as well as the essentials of the Lyapunov theory for both linear and nonlinear systems. With a section on the stabilizing state-feedback controllers, the reader also gets acquainted with the controller design based on the Lyapunov theory. Chapter 5 is dedicated to the optimal control of the dynamical systems. Especially, the section titled "A Glimpse at the Calculus of Variations" is very helpful in the sense that it equips the reader with the necessary tools required for the rest of the chapter. Variable structure systems are discussed and the design of sliding mode controllers is illustrated in Chapter 6. In Chapter 7, a combined controller-estimator compensator is designed for a class of dynamical systems using Lie derivatives and the vector field methods. Chapter 8 provides a comprehensive discussion of fuzzy logic and illustrates novel control strategies by fuzzy models including stabilizing and adaptive controllers. Chapter 9 is devoted to the study of neural networks from a dynamical system point of view. Genetic and evolutionary algorithms are studied in Chapter 10. Tracking control of a vehicle is accomplished by using an evolutionary fuzzy logic controller. Chapter 11 discusses the chaotic systems and fractals. The control of chaotic systems is also illustrated by an example in this chapter. An appendix on the essentials of mathematical background complements the material presented in this book.

The book is written in a textbook format and makes use of an understandable notation. It is well structured and the presentation is easy to follow making it useful as an upper level undergraduate or graduate level text. It will also be beneficial to researchers and practicing engineers as it covers the state-of-the-art control techniques. Each chapter is accompanied by a variety of examples and exercises to illustrate the applicability of the methods discussed. The book uses MATLAB/SIMULINK as a tool to provide a unifying environment for simulation purposes. With its extensive coverage of the current literature, it also serves as a reference book. The most powerful aspect of this book is that it establishes a bridge between the classical control problems and the most recent trends in control engineering. In conclusion, "Systems & Control" will be a valuable addition to the libraries of those interested in control of dynamical systems.

Taming The Electronic Beast: Conquering Computer Fear is "must" reading for anyone who is even the slightest bit uncomfortable with computers and computer technology. Designed and written specifically for the computer phobic, Taming The Electronic Beast is the perfect "non-user friendly" introduction for those who must become computer literate for reasons of business, education, or simply giving in to the demands of their kids (or grandkids!). Michael Bremer has a positive knack for explaining in clear, ordinary language (nicely laced with humor) how computers work and what can be done with them. Bremer cleanly and clearly demystifies the computer and in the process, instills within the reader a new found confidence -- thereby opening up whole new worlds of information technology.

I read Michael Bremer's book, Taming The Electronic Beast, cover to cover, and found it fun, very entertaining and inspiring. In fact, I was so inspired I spent six hours recently learning basics on my computer without a single moment of stress. It was the most fun I've had yet on the Beastly Bin of Boorish Banality! (See three-part insult starter kit in book.) I've had a pc for about three years now, and whenever the thought of trying to use it appeared, I would feel aversion to even turning it on. I avoided spending time on it because I saw it as a joyless waste of time. I simply wanted to be able to turn it on and know how to use it without spending too much time. The suggestions and the voice of the book changed my attitude. I now see the time spent during the learning phase is not a waste. The Edison example was inspiring, and the idea that learning something new exercises the brain makes the learning curve much more palatable. And making mistakes represents progress. I knew all this, but I needed a reminder. I see the light and it looks like fun! I loved the humor of the book. Just the thought of embarrassing my computer with a pair of big, pink, floppy, ears makes me smile. The three-part insult starter kit has the potential to be very useful in many situations. And I may even try spending some time on a computer game or two. I hear The Sims is quite entertaining. Really, the book was been very helpful. I'm loaning it to my Mother now. We're both looking forward to future Advice From The Neighborhood Nerd books. There are many questions beginners have. For many people it is a challenge to become computer literate. We appreciate having someone like the neighborhood nerd out there to hold our hands, and the voice of the book was comforting. I recommend it to anyone preparing to learn about computers.

I was really impressed with the lay-out and full page color pictures as the main learning element for dreamweaver. This breaks down step by step all the things neccessary to begin building your very own webpage, and is perfect for novices.
Although I found this book perfect for someone only starting out using dreamweaver, if you want a more complete, detailed description of html, or other elements inside dreamweaver, don't choose this book. But if you are just starting out, this is a perfect way to learn. Using full page color pictures rather than confusing computer talk is a lot faster. I recommend this book in conjunction with another detailed book once you become an advanced user.

These visual books are awesome for beginners. If you have never touched a program before and need to learn from scratch then these are the books you need. These books spoon feed the information to you using visual graphics of each window and option you would see on the screen.

If you have used a specific program before and are looking to increase your knowledge you will find this book more like A,B,C's. So unless your brand new, novices and experts will find these books a waste of time. They do not go into specific advance features but do teach new comers how to become novice users.

This is an amazing book. A professor suggested that I check it out, and I'm glad I did. I became a Dreamweaver expert without having to attend a class or ask a lot of questions, because everything you could possibly want to know is right in front of you! When I bought the book, I had a good grasp on how to use Microsoft FrontPage but wanted to learn a more sophisticated program. The book details everything I needed to know in order to build a professional site in Dreamweaver and provides picture tutorials for every step. It is the equivalent of taking a Dreamweaver class and watching the instructor go through all the different steps using a projected computer screen, but this is even better because you can go back and re-read things if they don't make sense at first (although that rarely happens). This whole series of books is worth checking out if you need an introduction on how to use a new program.

This book is more than the five star rating. Visually Excel learning the only right way to go. The book is excellently done too.

One of the newest and brightest features of Microsoft 2007 which includes Excel 2007, is the addition of The Ribbon, which replaces toolbars and menus in previous editions. This is quite complex and not very user friendly, but when you learn it, it can be great! If you struggled with old menu bars, you will definitely struggle with the New Ribbon.

The series of Visual Books has been quite popular, mainly because anything as dry as instructional material is greatly enhanced by pictures. The colorful graphics that define the category of work you want are bright, amusing, informative and large. An example is for the section: protect a password shows a big yellow book with a key lock; or change data color shows paint cans and one color spills onto a worksheet. The computer illiterate can "get the picture" even if you don't know what the book refers to.

However, my grief comes with too many big pictures and not enough pictures of the screen. A most important element is viewing the screen, but each pic of the computer screen is way too small. But you do have explicit instructions in the sidebars.

My question remains, why couldn't the writer incorporate larger-size views of the computer screen. This is so needed, because of the elaborate menu bar...or ribbon as it is called in Excel 2007.

Other than that, one point is the Database section has been advanced from the 2003. This element of the software eliminates the need for ACCESS 2007, which is much more advanced. So, if you don't want to explore the challenging ACCESS, you can simply use the Database function on Excel. This works great for smaller projects.

Overall, this is one of the best books for learning excel. Graphic and text are well spread out, it is user friendly, colorful and includes a ton of help.......Rizzo

I use this book everyday, easy to understand, easy to use. My spread sheets look just as good if not better than those in my work place that do this everyday. I am just slower, but who would know.

For those of us who lack computer savvy, a book like this is an essential. Personally I learn much better if I can read text AND look at a picture. Never really having done a spread sheet before, I learned in no time at all. I keep the book right by my computer. I have found all the 'Visually' books to be helpful
