Imagine, just some odd years ago you knew this and that, and imagine just today how you wish you could remember what you knew and not having to recollect the variant resources required to recompile that body of knowledge. Cavanagh pools together his years of experience and incorporates this working knowledge into a single resource that covers material most of us picked up from a number of different sources. The author's style of nailing down details leads to clean comprehension of the material. This book is not the kind of book you know that you need until you have it in hand then you realize how much it simplifies your life as a digital designer.

Good and detailed theoretical book for students. But others (and students too, btw) should keep in mind that the book does not contain any string of any HDL's code.

This book provides an in-depth discourse on the subject of sequential state machine design, which is the backbone for implementation of computer architectures, information transmission protocols, and other digital logic systems. All concepts and theory is exhaustively covered, and backed by plenty of examples. This book will serve well as an undergraduate text book for digital logic design, and is a definite companion to the practicing digital design engineer.

Cavanagh has done it again. Like his book on Digital Computer Arithmetic, it is grammatically polished and comprehensive. This is one of the best books on sequential logic and finite-state machine design. It is something that the real world can use -- the practical design of state machines. At least five stars.

I got an old version copy of this book. I was wondering if they have published an updated copy yet. This is "the" book you need to know everything about internet server administration. I wish the publisher print the book in a new updated edition.

Almost two years ago I was lucky enough to find this wonderful reference book. At the time I was just getting stated as an Internet consultant and was in great need of some technical material. Little did I know that this book would play such a big part in my future. I'll admit that at first, some of the material was a bit over my head. However, as my work drew me deeper into the tech aspect of web servers, I always had the answers I needed close at hand. It's hard to believe that with all the advancements in technology, this book has not been outdated. In fact, until recently, I would reach for it on a frequent basis. I would still be reaching for it today, but unfortunately my copy was book-napped!

This book is two years old and is still the best one on the market.

It covers all the topics a webmaster needs to know: bandwidth calculation, httpd server setup, html, and cgi forms. The information is presented in a clear manner for the novice without talking down or being "cute". Read it cover to cover and it will take you to journeyman webmaster status.

Good series

Review Date: 2007-05-13
Its hard for me to treat the books of this series separately (ShaderX 3, ShaderX 4, ShaderX 5). They are all very good books of GPU-Gems level or higher. In comparison with GPU Gems, they are more academic, i. e. they are rather short and more applicable to wide range of applications then GPU Gems ones (while GPU Gems series is more scientific, state of the art, considering one particular research) and the accompanying CD is much more better (lots of working examples, most with source code).
Sections (Image-Space, Shadows) are also very helpful to figure out what is useful for you.
This series is not for beginners anyway, so please, go Cg Tutorial or DX SDK Tutorial and don't put 2 or 3 marks for these books because you can't cope with them.

a good book for game developers

I've bought many other rendering books like GPU Gems series, and I think this book is more practical for game developers compared with the other books. It explains many useful algorithms in good details and covers many aspects that a serious game developer should consider. As a game engine programmer, I think this book is a very good reference for me.

Up To Date View of the State of the Art
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-20
This book is a collection of forty-seven articles around the common theme of shading images in real time. Many of these effects have been common in the movie world for many years, but in that application the shading can be done on very expensive machines and the time it takes to produce an image is not important because the resulting image is to be shown on screen rather than immediately on a display. Now, with the increasing power in the PC's in widespread use, these techniques are being brought down to the standard desktop.

In this book a wide selection of authors discuss the start of the art in shading. They are, for the most part, active professionally in the graphics display business. A number of them work for ATI, the video card manufacturer, a number work for gaming companies, or for companies producing software used in gaming.

This approach provides for a fast time to print, rather than one author taking a year to write the book. In this industry a year is a lifetime, well, at least a generation in the software.

Shader X3: Advanced Rendering With DirectX And Open GL compiled, organized, and deftly edited by Wolfgang Engle (Senior Special FX Engineer at Wings Simulations) is packed from cover to cover with 630-pages of insightful new techniques, innovative approaches to common problems, as well as practical tools and tricks that will help in all areas of shader programming. This comprehensive collection of ready-to-use techniques will enable even the most novice programmer to get up to speed quickly, and the more experienced programmers will find a wealth of insights and techniques to improve efficiency and avoid redundancies. Shader X3 is an essential, "user friendly", and highly recommended instructional reference for shader programmers.

As a new user of Sibelius and someone who is not real computer savy, I was so happy to hear about this book!! It was the only real comprehensive guide that I've found, and it has done wonders!!! It makes using the program not only easy, but fun! I bought this program so I could get my creative ideas down on paper and now I can! I highly recommend this book for any Sibelius user!!!

Yes this is a well-written book, and yes I use it frequently when encountering a new technique I haven't tried yet. Sometimes it's faster than searching the "Sibelius Reference" PDF that comes with the software.

I was, however, disappointed that this book was specifically written for Sibelius 4.0. Not that the info contained is that out-of-date or inaccurate, but there are so many new features now in the current Version 5 that it makes this book incomplete for new Sibelius users just jumping in on Version 5 like I did. I did not see anywhere in the Product Description that told me I was buying an outdated manual. The book still is helpful, but I wish I could have waited for a version 5 guide to come along. (I heard one is "in the works" somewhere by a different author.)

This book is an excellent addition to the original Sibelius manual. The original manual that comes with Sibelius is extremely well written and is very effective at explaining the software. The authors do not try to replace, but to clarify the Sibelius manual and add additional shortcuts and illustrations to help all Sibelius users more quickly learn how to use the software.

Sand Pirates is not only a romance, it's a breezy mix of suspense, mystery and thrills beyond ones wildest dreams. It takes you far away to a land of fantasy. I was intrigued by the characters that were well developed and interesting. The story moves fast and keeps the blood pumping. The twist and turns of the plot and the island of Sava made me feel as if I were there.

A solid Intermediate-wanting-to-win-at-Diety-Level book...
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-02-04
This is a fairly good book, but is rather thin for the price. It seems targeted to the Intermediate Civ2 player -- anyone who is looking to refing winning high-level play strategy will find it rather redundant.

However, if you are struggling at King or Emperor level, this book will help you. It's targeted to building a sound empire, then winning (albiet sloppily) at Emperor and Diety levels; however, it will not help with most of the more subtle play at those levels (e.g., getting your score from 3,000 to 15,000 by 1850 AD, etc.).

This book does discuss solid fundamentals, how to deal with unhappiness, how to start a strong empire, etc. It does not cover things such as the OCC (one city challenge), getting your top Diety score above 20,000, and the game's more subtle idiosyncracies (max advances, the food caravan 'trick', cheapest way to rush build, etc.).

The cutting edge strategies still reside on the Internet, or maybe you'll discover them during extended gameplay.

PS, If you still seek a challenge, take the OCC (though this book does not help). OCC game rules are simple: you are only allowed ONE--that's right--ONE city, no cheating, no takebacks (unless a hut gives you a city); game setup: Diety level, small world, 7 civs, raging hordes. Your single city against the world... Top players can LAND a spaceship by 1900 AD, and the best have done it before 1850... Questions? My email is civII@bigfoot.com

A good book, I would reccomend it.

This is a great book for types on building your civilization from scratch. I learned many strategies from this book. It is not like other Civ2 books I've seen, that are pretty much a extension of the manual and the Civilopedia. The only thing lacking is the tip's for scenarios from Civ2 Conflicts in Civilization (to be bundled with Ultimate Civ2: Gold Edition.) It had two pages for tip's on some scenarios, and only a half on others. It also didn't rate any of the scenarios. Still, if you are yet to fully master Civ2, I would buy this book.

Excellent guide with real strategy

Review Date: 2000-05-04
Unlike most so-called strategy guides, which are really rehashes of the game manual, Rymaszewski's book outlines a legitimate strategy which players of CivII can use to succeed at the game on its hardest settings (Emperor and Deity).

The author knows his book is different; he recommends that the most effective way to use it is to simply "read it, and then play the game again". In other words, _Advanced Strategies_ is not a step-by-step walkthrough, nor is it a comprehensive references source full of charts and tables. Instead, it is an outline of a new way of thinking about the game.

I recommend this book to anyone who is struggling with CivII. While Rymaszewski's advice cannot compete with the level of detail available on some CivII-related Web sites, his clear writing style and no-nonsense approach to the game make _Advanced Strategies_ well worth its list price.

This book isn't about just creating a website--it's about running a business! With the help of this book, I was able to come up with a plan for expanding my business into e-commerce. The book is very readable, and full of sensible advice. Each chapter moves you closer to making your idea a reality. It starts with getting real about what's going to work and steps you right through everything you need to know, all the way through building your site in the most economical way and right up to marketing it. My hat's off to this author for writing a book that's a good read and good advice, too.

A seminar for the E-ntrepreneur
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2001-06-15
Here, at last, is a concise introduction to the world of e-commerce for the semi-savvy professional. Terminology, strategic planning, branding, advertising, traffic generation, and, oh yes, technology... every topic budding e-ntrepreneurs need to consider before risking their futures is here presented with clarity and grace. One caveat: those looking for strictly the technical or strictly the business side of e-commerce will find this book lacking. To explain the whole, the author had little choice but to abbreviate some of the parts.

Like most titles published by Microsoft Press, this book has a decidedly pro-Redmond feel, with frequent references to bCentral, FrontPage, and other MS products and services (most notably in the section on server platforms... the author would have you believe your only choices are 2000 or NT). However, these product placements do not diminish the flow of the chapters or the value of the advice.

Alas, no one book can turn you into a dot-com success story overnight (unless Jeff Bezos' diary is for sale). But this one should certainly help.

An excellent basic primer for e-commerce entrepreneurs.

`... excellently written and produced book ... David Attwood is a respected teacher and renowned researcher in all of the topics covered in this book, and is to be congratulated on its timely publication ... there is no doubt in my mind that it will very quickly become a primary source for beginning graduate students (and high level undergraduates) and experienced researchers alike ... Unusually, I cannot think of any way in which the book could be improved. It is comprehensive and enjoyable to read, the figures are illustrative and clearly drawn and the mathematics is at an appropriate level for the intended readership ... it will serve as [an] important reference source as well as a teacher's and researcher's handbook ... I shall certainly be using this book in my future teaching and recommending it to advanced students.' Alan Michette, Contemporary Physics

A very good textbook

Review Date: 2000-05-05
I took the class taught by the author at UC-Berkeley while he was finishing up this text (I also proofread a couple of the chapters as part of the class - you can find my name and the names of my classmates in the acknowledgements).

The text is very clearly written. An undergraduate physics / engineering level of understanding of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics is sufficient background for most the textbook. Most of the calculations are done semi-classically which helps for people not well versed in quantum mechanics. It also serves nicely as a reference text.

Topics covered include:
- Grazing incidence optics
- Normal incidence multi-layer mirrors
- Synchrotron radiation
- Cyclotrons, wigglers and undulators
- Plasma physics with applications to EUV and X-ray sources
- Fresnel zone plates
- Coherence
- EUV and X-ray lithograpy
- ...

The textbook stands alone nicely ... you do not need to constantly look up results in other sources and texts.

The textbook also contains a wealth of reference materials (several appendices of atomic data for X-ray transitions, cross sections, mathematical tables, ...)

Read this book, learn as much as you can about the IP Filter implementation on Solaris 10 (lots of questions about IP Filter), have considerable hands on experience with Solaris 10 and you should pass the exam. Page 6 In the swimming section it shows Rouge using her treasure scope instead of swimming. 3. Page 39 For Mission 4 In Metal Harbor it says you have 5 minutes.
