Read cover-to-cover and it is a worthwhile readReview Date: 2002-01-05
I set out to learn how Outlook works. I decided that Outlook is a valuable productivity aid and that the "trial and error" method of learning it was not how I wanted to learn it. I found this book recommended on a web site, bought and read the book (cover-to-cover). I now feel I know what outlook can do, and how to do it.
And no. I do not know the author or have anything to gain from this review.
Comphrensive, but not for beginnersReview Date: 2004-07-29
If you're a novice, however, you may find the information in the book overwhelming and confusing. This book may well be too much information for the casual individual user. If you are a casual user who will use Outlook only to keep track of your calendar and your date book, you may want to buy a simpler book that just focuses on what you need to know in order to use Outlook.

Essential resource for creating successful mobile servicesReview Date: 2006-03-07
The Voice of ExperienceReview Date: 2006-02-26
They start by reviewing the big apps, customized ring tones for instance that can be sold for a few cents but which when multipled by any fraction at all of the number of phones sold equals a huge market. The number of phones sold in 2005 was somewhere around 680 million. A dollar, or a Euro for a customized sound and you have lots and lots of money.
But after ring tones, music, and TV, what comes next?
The authors discuss some things that have been tried, some of the problems and the opportunities. But when all is said and done, remember it's just a phone. It's got a very small screen, coarse resolution, not too many buttons, limited processing power, memory and storage.
These people clearly understand their marketplace. Their advice seems sound and well thought out. Perhaps more than thought out, it's the voice of experience.

in fixed environment (better than many books I've read on this very topic).
I also recommend this book for its cellular technologies and networking technology in depth tutorials, for those who needed them... Finally, I found the views on the direction wireless data services are going to take very interesting.
Excellent Book for Beginners to advanced readers on wirelessReview Date: 2003-02-11
didn't have this much detailed knowledge on the subject (even being a
networking professional for over 20 years). The book is definitely lives
up to the expectations, in fact I am yet to see a better book on
cellular wireless data (though this is not a main topic here). This book
goes quite in depth on some very unique aspects of GPRS and CDMA2000
data services, while presenting fresh view on the problem and uncovering
some of the interesting industry secrets. This book is a must have for
any one who wants to master wireless data and learn what Mobile or
wireless VPN is about.
Shneyderman and Casati do a great job of writing about this fascinating
topic. This book makes a great reference for data and wireless pros as
well as a good (but not too easy) introduction for any beginner. Style
is great and fresh too. Recommend it to all.
- Enjoy

Modern Magnetic Materials: Graduate TextReview Date: 2007-10-14
Modern Magnetic MaterialsReview Date: 2000-04-04
Excellent reference work and study guide for magnetismReview Date: 2003-08-11
the-art quantum electronic interpretation of the physics of magnetism. Doctor O'Handley has masterfully organized his lecture notes and has produced a magnum opus.
I had the extraordinary good fortune of attending his lecture series at the University of Florida in 1994. The class was primarily for materials engineering graduate students, but I was allowed to take the class because I was doing research in magnetic devices for electrical engineering. Even though the physics involved was at a higher level than I was used to, Dr. O'Handley was able to communicate the necessary concepts in a lucid manner.
His intelligible explanations in the lecture hall are repeated and expanded in this well-crafted volume.
If you are interested in the science of magnetism from an electrical engineering, or material science, perspective, I wholeheartedly recommend purchasing this book.
Modern Magnetic Materials: Principles and ApplicationsReview Date: 2001-12-01
This invaluable book should certainly be present in the library of any department or institute carrying out magnetism R&D work. In other words, it deserves to be on the shelves of any lab or research institute library. I strongly recommend this book to every student and teacher who intends studying or teaching magnetism.

Great Gaming Guide!Review Date: 2003-08-02
I was drawn to the book because it had a chapter on modding and enhancing game hardware (which turned out to be really good). But the more I read in the book, the more I liked. I didn't realize that there were so many interesting resources for gamers such as places to get old vintage games.
This is the sort of book that every gamer should get a copy of and read cover to cover. It's quite funny in places and just a blast to read in general. The author even included a chapter at the end of the book about what it is like to be a game developer, which was a treat for me because I'd like to develop games some day.

For the Hard Core GamersReview Date: 2004-03-13
Chapters span all the important topics of computer gaming. From personalising your hardware through overclocking the CPU to tips on searching eBay for items. Plus, of course, on the latter, you can sell various gaming memorabilia.
He also provides ancillary data on books and movies spawned from games. Though he thinks most of the movies are purely dross. There is a fascinating table of the books in Chapter 7. You may be surprised by how extensive it is, with several books being written by well known authors like Mercedes Lackey and Alan Dean Foster. (The money is good for such purely work-for-hire, I guess.)
Most importantly to some of you, he tells how to hook up to the competitive gaming scene, with lists of various regional conventions for the hard core. Interested?

Korchnoi's LegacyReview Date: 2002-09-06
Impartial Analysis!Review Date: 2004-04-18
Wonderful game collectionReview Date: 2003-02-26
Dispite being one of the best players in his day (and indeed, he continues to be very strong to this day -- still at 70+ years old in the top 50!), the annotations are at a level class players like myself can understand. Variations are kept to a bare minimum in the book.
This book is very similar to Yasser's Winning Chess Brilliancies, but more games, and a little less depth. Victor just gets to the point rapidly, explains the nuances of the position, and moves on.
This book was also named BCF book of the year, for I think good reasons. A third volume in this series should be out soon, I look forward to it, and will purchase the first volume as well.
Thank you for this masterpiece, Terrible Viktor!!Review Date: 2002-03-24
Viktor Korchnoi - two times challenger to the title of World Champion - has been around for ever, he has played and beaten the stars of the 1950s through to players who are stars now at the beginning of the 21st century.
Here Korchnoi has chosen 50 of his games with Black from 1952 to 2000, he stresses that he is rather old-fashioned about his black opening strategy, not being a regular exponent of the King's Indian or the Pirc or other `nihilistic' ways of playing with Black.
This is the second volume of a two volume work and there is no doubt: this is the most eagerly waited book of recent months; the first volume last year won the British Chess Federation's Book of the Year award: the decision was unanimous. If you are a chess player you can't live without this book.
Furthermore this OLMS edition is very well done.

Why Aren't All SQL Tutorial Books Like This?Review Date: 2008-06-24
The book starts with introducing you to both the product as well as database design and efficient database/table creation. Following this is an excellent overview of using MySQL and the MySQL-flavor of SQL focused on language (query language keywords, functions, etc), table types (MyISAM, InnoDB, etc), and transactions. You're reading is concluded with an excellent overview of general administration and optimization. Each section is broken down into discussion, fully-functional examples, a quiz, and to-do exercises, ensuring that you get to implement and solidify the skills you just acquired.
At the time of my writing this, the book is 4 years old, and the version of MySQL it addresses (4.x) has already been upgraded. I knew that when I purchased the book, and it doesn't matter as the fundamentals haven't changed. MySQL may have released improved GUI tools to accomplish many tasks as well as introducing additional features, but the underlying SQL language, design methods, and structure is the same, and knowing/understanding the fundamentals improves your efficiency and makes using the product easier.
As the purpose of this book is to teach you the fundamentals of database design and creation, this will not be your last purchase. But for those new to MySQL, you can not go wrong starting here, even now.
A concise introduction to the fundamentals of MySQLReview Date: 2004-05-01
"MySQL Tutorial" is the perfect companion to any security tool which depends on a MySQL database. For example, no one seriously expects to collect large amounts of data with Sguil and Snort unless a MySQL or similar database is working in the background. "MySQL Tutorial" gives the right details on the right subjects for those running integrated MySQL databases.
This book is not for Oracle gurus. It's for people who need basic understanding of MySQL installation, configuration, security, and administration. I found the authors' explanations clear and relevant, hitting the high points I would expect in a 267 page book. The text is example-driven, using a sample "employee" database to demonstrate various administration tasks.
The only real fault I found involves the scripts at the publisher's Web site. They create a sample database whose naming convention differs from the book's description. For example, the scripts create an "employee_skills" table, but the book speaks of "employeeSkills". The best answer to this problem is to manually correct the scripts prior to running them, or to type in the examples by hand.
"MySQL Tutorial" met my expectations, with a page count and price far more reasonable than many tech titles available today. I recommend this book to anyone who uses MySQL in a role supporting intrusion detection systems, Web servers, or similar applications.
Nice introduction and overviewReview Date: 2004-01-12
Its a nice overview of MySQL's capabilites and quirks. After reading the first few chapters I am more convinced than before that MySQL is the best database choice for all but the largest, most critical applications.
If you're an experienced techie and you want the heavy details on MySQL, get one of the $50 encyclopedia-weight books. If you want a nice introduction and instructions on how to work with basic queries, try this book.
Add This To Your LibraryReview Date: 2004-10-12
It is nice to see books of this size (250 pages) at this price point coming out. Nothing is worse than those large tomes that weigh a ton and cost an arm and a leg. You should be able to get through this in a week, which is perfect for busy professionals.
This tutorial is written very clearly and does what I want from it - nail down the 80% of the necessary information needed to get work done. After each chapter there is a quiz to test your knowledge. The authors tackle both the user and administrator side of using the product. One of my favorite sections in the book is the Database Crash Course which discusses normalization.
If you are serious about using mySQL in your web projects, look to this book to get you started quickly. This book won't turn you into an immediate mySQL expert. But what it will do is give you the skills to be proficient. It was good enough to get my projects started on my website, KerryOnWorld.com. This is a top 30 book in my 15-year technical library. That is how much I like it.
