This is a very fascinating book to read indeed. It takes the reader through thrilling rollercoaster rides into the past and future across so many disciplines in science and philosophy that is it hard not to feel enlightened. Prof. Syed Ahamed¼s visionary perspective into the future of internet, knowledge, and artificial intelligence from a platform firmly founded on science and robust rational is very compelling to read. I found the chapters III and IV of the book particularly impressive and truly enjoyable to read while being educated. I highly recommend it.

Do you need ideas in how to expand and/or absorb the Internet world of knowledge about anything?
Do you seek knowledge on topics that are hard to find explanations about them?
Are you overwhelmed by the amount of unfiltered information you get every time you search the Net?
Don't you feel mentally exhausted after spending hours looking to find good articles on subjects of your interest only to realize that the ones presented to you are of no value?
Couldn't the system be 'a little' smarter and pick up notions of your interest from your previous query and reach for those information that you are really in need of?
An excellent way to start to find answers to these questions lies in reading professor Ahamed's Intelligent Internet Knowledge Networks.

An Ambitious Text

This is not an easy book to review. It is a text filled to brim with interesting information.

Because of that fact it would very hard to write a brief and yet complete review. I will simply provide a small thesis of what I had extracted from the work.

First of all it will be a book that I will read more then once.

This is an ambitious work that will provoke contemplation as well as spawn interesting research ideas for the coming future.

"Intelligent Internet Knowledge Networks" is the kind of book that is hard to categorize.

On the one hand I could easily see Computer Scientists digesting the material. On the other flank I could see this book having a place in a Masters Level or PHD Philosophy program.

It begins by building it's foundation on the cutting edge technologies of our day.

Early in the work Professor Ahamed discusses the implications that telecommunications and fiber optic technology have had on the present internet community - the technological and physical characteristics that have facilitated the current internet environment.

He then builds on this discussion naturally by getting into the concept of Intelligent Networks.

There is also a discussion of electronic government as well as medical networks both of which I found to be very interesting.

The bridge is then laid down which connects the technology to the human element. The AI concepts...embedded intelligence, sensing and monitoring networks, intelligent knowledge sharing....the technological framework which reflects how machines and programs may resemble or imitate human characteristics.

After this point we enter into the area which I found most fascinating - the wisdom machine.

While I write this review I think of an essay that I read last night written by Cardinal Ratzinger in which he discusses the foundations of Democracy - he conferred how a ruler may not in fact know what is just but may in reality merely be the manifestation of process and procedures. Where a ruler did not necessarily care about what was true or even virtuous but was simply a cog in the Democratic machine.

But what if wisdom or even truth could be pursued through the machine?

These are the implications which I find to be the most powerful. Can you imagine instead of getting into a senseless debate one could take facts and data and merely compute the outcome of an argument? I believe that this is the direction the wisdom machine would move us ultimately towards and the aspect which fascinates me the most.

This is the part of the work which I believe is the most fascinating and which carries tremendous implications for the very society in which we exist.

This text has brought me full circle from where I started my original major in philosophy almost 14 years ago - when I studied advanced quantification where similar ideas where discussed.

In conclusion if you are a thoughtful person, scientist or even philosopher I highly recommend this work. You will not be disappointed.

Review Date: 2002-04-13
Despite the downturn in the corporate business world, the Internet still exists as a means for enterprising people to market their business ideas to make a living. Opportunities are boundless and growing numbers of people continue to give the Internet a try. There are plenty of resources available to help them succeed.

Internet Prophets offers readers an excellent collection of business concepts, strategies, and instruction to help them start online businesses. The book features information about creating sound business plans, managing businesses - including money matters, creating effective Websites, marketing business Websites, online resources, and general business information that will make an impact on the way people do business - while being mindful of operating budgets!

Throughout the book readers are reminded about setting clear goals and objectives. Planning every stage of one's business is of paramount importance - the business plan, the Website, marketing, search engine strategies, and knowing what the competition is doing are all aspects of a business that demand close attention to detail and determination to carry out.

Most fascinating about the book - in my opinion - are the business strategies provided. Readers are exposed to some exciting and very practical ways to draw attention to themselves and to maintain professional and profitable business-client relationships. Strategies include establishing online communities, setting up auction services, creating portals, providing visitors access to information, joining e-marketplaces, adding interactive tools to Websites, hosting live online events at Websites, adding dynamically updated content to Websites, and thinking globally when planning the action.

The tone of the book is serious and the rewards for gleaning from it are enormous. The strategies are sound and the resources provided will put people in touch with the companies, products, and services they need to develop a meaningful online business presence that will produce positive results for them. The book is ideally suited for start-up business operations and those existing businesses that want to and probably should make the move to the Internet to promote themselves. Essential reading!

This is a book for any small business that's thinking about how to use the Net to build their business. Thank goodness, this book is past the Internet hype and on to what really works in the real world. Chapters cover topics such as online shopping, digital delivery, "think globally, click locally", and (hello!) customer service.

Although it purports to apply to small, medium and large businesses, it's most appropriate to smaller businesses who need a practical guide to moving their business on the net. I especially liked the chapters on "Marketing Your Web Site" -- practical, spam-free advice on raising your profile online...

A Great Audio Engineering Resource

Review Date: 2001-11-06
Before discovering "Introduction of Electroacoustics and Audio Amplifier Design" by Dr. Leach, my knowledge of speaker design was limited to a handful of formulas and some tabulated data. I have found this text to be the most important "missing link" among my resources for designing speakers.

This text develops models for the acoustic, mechanical, and electrical elements that are all present in electroacoustic devices, such as speakers, microphones, and amplifiers. It is presented in a very methodical and thorough manner, complete with clear qualitative discussion and the mathematics to go with it. The math used in the text involves logarithms, complex numbers, and some calculus.

This book has enabled me to effectively design speaker enclosures, vents, and crossovers. It is very well written, and has proven to be very useful. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand electroacoustic systems design in more depth. It would also be an excellent complement to any audio engineer's library.

Most books on loudspeaker design just don't provide the design equations to support the qualitative descriptions, but this book, an outgrowth of a college course on audio engineering, has the supporting math needed to design audio products. Years of teaching experience are evident from the qualitative descriptions which are factual, not wordy. Work with this book, chart out the equations, and you will well on you way to a solid educational foundation required to competently design loudspeaker components, speaker boxes, crossovers, microphones and amplifiers.

Simply the Best!

Introduction ... is not an introduction! It's a complete book to correctly design speakers systems and gives good hints for audio amplifiers design.
It makes you back to school, with problems and tricky questions. It is well written but you need some mathematics skills to read (study!) it without stops.
I own many books about the subject (Electroacoustics) but this is simply the Best!

Electroacoustics is that part of acoustics that pertains to the modeling of acoustical systems with electric circuits. This book is an outgrowth of a senior elective course in audio engineering taught at Georgia Tech by the electrical engineering department. The first part of the book teaches basic acoustics as it pertains to audio engineering. The remainder of the book concerns the application of the tools of electroacoustics to the analysis and synthesis of microphones, loudspeakers, crossover networks, and acoustic horns. The book concludes with a chapter on the basic theory of audio amplifier design. Because most acoustic devices have a mechanical part, the modeling of mechanical systems with electrical ones is also part of electroacoustics, and is also covered in this book. This book is therefore aimed at electrical engineers that are interested in the analysis and design of acoustic systems. This book is not for recording engineers looking for studio construction techniques. The table of contents is:
1. Basic Principles of Sound
2. Fundamentals of Acoustics
3. Analagous Circuits of Acoustical Systems
4. Analogous Circuits of Mechanical Systems
5. Microphones
6. Moving-Coil Loudspeakers
7. Closed-Box Loudspeaker Systems
8. Vented-Box Loudspeaker Systems
9. Acoustic Horns
10. Crossover Networks
11. A Loudspeaker Potpourri
12. Audio Power Amplifiers

This is an excellent book on the subject. The reader should have however, a good understanding of probability/statistics and signals/systems. A linear algebra background will also help. The author is very concise. My only criticism is that it makes little use of examples to help explain the theory.

This is probably the best book on Spectral Analysis. A undergrad level probability / statistics is all that is required for reading through the book. The book develops the fundamentals of Spectral Analysis clearly and thoroughly and takes the reader through the various methods of spectral estimation. Parametric and Non-parametric methods are discussed and there are a variety of simulations that the reader can do in Matlab. The Matlab code is also provided in the website for the book. After going through the book, the reader would have enough knowledge in the field of spectral analysis to make her prepared for advanced reading / research in the subject. Also note that the book does not require any in-depth knowledge of Digital Signal Processing so it can be read by people in other areas who might need a knowledge of spectral analysis.

The chapters are well-organized and up-to-date. If you have this book at hand, don't forget visiting the book's homepage (you can find the address in the book) and downloading some useful information, including lecture notes and MATLAB files. Those materials are really informative and helpful. I highly recommend this book for textbook in classroom or reference book for researchers.

the classic text of VLSI design
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-03-07
Mead and Conway's book is still quite germane. For those of you new to VLSI, this book is one of the key texts in the field. In 1980, the authors managed to abstract the common steps in chip fabrication. In such a way that chip design could now be taught at the undergraduate level, using this book. Plus accompanying layout software. And the student's design could then be taped out and sent to a fab and actually made.

This was a huge breakthrough. Prior to this book, if you wanted to actually make a chip, using a reasonably current fab, then you could not, as a university student. You had to work for a semiconductor company that had a fab. A large gap in your education. It also meant that a lot of chip knowledge was not transferable if you changed companies.

In software terms, this book is a refactoring. Though this term itself did not come into use for software till the 90s. The book can still be profitably read. Its layout ideas have not become obsolete. In fact, if you were to compare this book with more current undergrad VLSI texts, there is little conceptually new introduced in the latter.

This kind of technical talent is much more common in men than in women. But Lynn Conway (2nd author of the book) is a woman--who used to be a man. Several folks have pointed out that transsexuals with autogynephilia are especially likely to have hard core male-typical mathematical technical talent. Why should this be? Who knows? I don't. But the talent that went into this book is immense.

Review Date: 2000-11-27
This reference continues the construction of actual integrated circuits introduced in the Feynman reference listed above. Theory behind various parts of a stored program (ie, von Neumann) computer, and its fabrication through VLSI techniques is clearly presented. As well, there are chapters on concurrent computation, for example arrays of processors to perform matrix computations, and the physics of computation. Connecting numerous components together is an important issue in biological computing architectures, and while the latter is not covered, this reference provides valuable insights with regards to the former. This reference was a classic on the subject in 1980, and its concepts still largely remain valid.

This book is a long-awaited tutorial on factor graphs. From a bottom-up approach, it gives a comprehensive insight into the theory and applications of factor graphs. The author does not shun the mathematical derivations, but balances them with a lot of exemplary material and clarifying interpretations. I am somewhat familiar with factor graphs, and I found this book to provide a compelling survey. What's particularly nice about this book, is that it's accessible to anyone with a minimal background in communications.

Review Date: 2007-11-06
I bought this book to understand state-of-the-art iterative algorithms for digital receivers. The book spans from basic elements in digital communications to more complex concepts that involve iterative detection and decoding, all in a unified framework based on factor graphs. These concepts are applied to a number of fundamental problems in digital communications such as decoding for turbo and low density parity check codes, and detection for MIMO and multi-user systems. I found that the book provides a good mix of theory and practice with many worked examples. In fact, the theory is so well handled and presented, that the concepts are easily grasped. It must be pointed out that this text attempts a formidable task, that of providing a theoretically sound development of iterative techniques to be used for modern receivers. It essentially succeeds in this goal.

I discovered this book at a conference, and bought it as I wanted to read a good introduction to the design of turbo-algorithms for wireless systems. While it has met my expectation quite well in that sense, it is actually more than just an introduction. A nice aspect of this book is namely the large variety of topics, covered in a clear and concise style. I particularly liked the part devoted to Kalman filtering. Another advantage is the very intuitive way used by the author to establish relationships between factor graphs and estimation theory. In short, a very good book for a large audience.

This book reviews a large variety of digital communications algorithms in the notation of factor graphs.

It is an ideal starting point for researchers who are entirely new to the field of digital communications and wish to gain a quick overview. Since all algorithms are consistently described in one framework, it avoids having to parse the confusing mix of notations occurring in the existing literature.

It also of great use for experts in digital communications, since the factor graph notation will give them new insights, and will allow them to appreciate surprising connections among the different algorithms. Moreover, the framework of factor graphs allows one to design new receiver algorithms in a disciplined manner.

This book gives a well-selected precis of the basic math needed for the first two years of enginnering but with enough explanations, examples, and short derivations that the reader can actually make some sense of the results. This should be a much better overview that standard references. Its clearly written and very readable. I defnitely plan to recommend it to my students in engineering physics.
