Great Introduction for Optoelectronics and Waveguide DesignReview Date: 2000-12-09
This book has example problems aimed at both the advanced undergrad/early graduate student, as well as the industrial engineer. Some of the problems are nicely worked out as to give you an idea how to use it on your own. An example of this is how the effective index calculation is done. Most text just describe the theoretical foundations. This book covers the theoretical, but also works out a problem showing you the intricacies of an effective index calculation.
I highly recommend this book as a text for a course in optoelectronics and as a more advanced introduction for the self-learner. You do need some background in calculus, being comfortable with working problems in electricity and magnetism. Optics background not required to read this book, so it's also ideal for the engineer/non-physics scientist.

Easy to follow explanations from the horse's mouthReview Date: 2001-06-17
Generator concepts are in bite size chunks and easy to follow, yet not so easy that they bore the reader. The book follows a natural progression in complexity and will be usefull to developers of all experience levels stepping up to the Generator plate.
The level at which the author's stand in the developer community gives them the opportunity to bestow their knowledge in "we know it all" manner, but instead they maintain a humbleness that says "hey, we're just developers like you who've had a lot more time on our hands."
Chock full of all the essentials, and the non-essentials, this book is a must have for the Generator developer (or the developer wanna-be) and looks to have a long shelf life.
Chris, Phil, Mike-nice work!

As a Generator and Flash trainer I always look for good material to add to class for future reading, this book will not only top the list but will be integrated into all future classes. Having used Generator since 1.0 I thought I knew many of the tricks but this book showed me a few that I have never seen before and will use immediately.
If nothing else know that the authors are top of their game and that the material for this book matches their excellence.

The authority on batteries - Lithium Ion out of dateReview Date: 2008-07-28
This handbook contains sections that are "basic" enough that it is useful for any engineer specifying a battery for a product. It also contains the "advanced" material such that it is useful for those in the battery industry itself.
THE Authoritative Book on BatteriesReview Date: 2003-02-26
The chapters are divided by battery chemistry, and each is written by an expert in the field. Most chapters include detailed technical descriptions of chemistry, electrical characteristics, construction details, applications, and pros/cons charts.
The 3rd edition features significant changes, including updates to older sections as well as new sections on progress in advanced battery systems, and an immense new section on lithium-ion batteries.
My only complaint is the lack of uniformity across chapters in terms of informational content and format. This can make comparison of battery technologies difficult. Some chapters go into too much technical detail, while some others leave out critical considerations.
These are relatively minor quibbles, however, and do not make the Handbook any less valuable to anyone dealing with batteries or other energy storage systems.

One other reviewer suggested it helps for taking the Physics GRE. Well, that may depend on who you are. If you are already conversant enough with physics by the end of your undergrad years, then needing an extra text like this for the GRE may be superfluous.

A Program on the CD solved my problem.Review Date: 2004-09-13
The answer, of course, is that it's free to send out e-mails in any quantity to any list of addresses. What I don't understand is why the congress has allowed it to continue, but they do.
The answer is that you have to be prepared to defend yourself from these unwanted intrusions. I thought I was doing pretty well, until a particularly nasty adware program managed to get into and install itself in my system. One of the packages included on the CD in this book solved the problem, that alone made the book worth its price.
Stay a step ahead of spammers and hackersReview Date: 2004-08-15
The same is true with viruses and spyware. You first need to learn how these nasty things spread so you can avoid getting infected. The book goes into great detail on this issue with clear explanations and very helpful advice. For those already afflicted, it explains how to remove a virus or spyware infection. The software on the included CD helps with that as well.
The section on pop-ups explains what pop-ups are and where they come from. It then teaches you how to effectively use pop-up blocking software.
Make no mistake, this book is written for the general user; it's no reference text for IT professionals. But even experienced users will find a lot of worthwhile material.
Remove the trash and keep what you need.Review Date: 2004-09-21
Having spent that last several months working on a spyware lockdown, this book has provided some very important information for me to the project. The book does give you a great deal of interesting reading that is written for just about all levels of comprehension.
The author has given you a number of ways to configure, install, setup and troubleshoot the various ways to block spyware, spam, the ever annoying pop-ups and even viruses. What this book does is lay out a way for the reader to first take in the concepts and then try it out. As always you need to make sure you have a backup of the system you will be working.
The book does come with a cd that has several demos and even a couple of freeware utilities, although the Spybot and Ad-Aware are out of date since the printing, they are still useful and best of all free. Overall the book does a good job of informing the user without being over technical and if you are new to computers this might be a good pickup to see what you are in for.
Useful Tips To Help Keep Your PC Pest FreeReview Date: 2004-12-05
Home users generally think of the computer as an appliance. They don't want to know more than they have to in order to use it for its intended purpose. They aren't trying to become computer security experts any more than they want to understand the physics behind how the microwave oven works.
Unfortunately, you can use a microwave oven without understanding the physics, but at least a rudimentary understanding of the threats out there and how to protect your computer or network from them are required to effectively use the computer.
Feinstein does a good job of explaining what the threats are and why you are at risk, and then providing the reader with fairly simple instructions to help shield the computer from that threat and protect your data and your network bandwidth so you can use the computer as you intended.
This is a good resource for a home user trying to learn about protecting their PC

A Great SkimReview Date: 2001-08-11
McGarvey's slightly filling low-calorie read begins, flows and ends logically. He covers all the expected aspects of "dotcomming" with little waylaying, getting right to the fruit on the bottom. It is not unreasonable to expect to get this book, get the point, and get on your way to a website in a matter of hours. But if you are looking for in depth internet discussion and information, it will not be found under the lid of this book, which, quite frankly, was okay with us.
A few points were particularly appreciated. The design was quite excellent, highlighting the important information in sassy side quotes, and the "how to" chapters were broken up with "how we did" chapters, neatly preventing information overload and inspiring action to follow in the profiled entrepreneur's footsteps. If we were to bestow one gripe upon this book it would be some of the Cheap Tricks chapters. A few of the segments included achievements of folks who had certainly not taken the cheap route; in fact, one entrepreneur had used $75,000 to start up his fledging business. Folks who stayed in the range of $500 to $1,000 all-inclusive would have been more like it.
Get this book. Whether your budget is $100 or $100,000 you will not be remiss in helping your bottom line with this tasty and appealing piece of the dotcom pie.

A Great Choice for e-Business Beginners!Review Date: 2001-03-10
There are lots of reasons why "How to Dotcom" belongs on your bookshelf, but let me just touch on the two most important: First, McGarvey knows what he's talking about. He is a meticulous researcher who works a little harder and digs a little deeper than other writers covering similar topics. The second reason you ought to buy this book is that it's well written. Believe me, writing about technology in a way that is engaging and entertaining is no small achievement. And even the best content is of limited value if you can't work you way through the book. McGarvey's writing style hits exactly the right tone...not too breezy but certainly not too ponderous.
Bottom line: If you find the idea of e-business tempting but you're not sure how to get started, you will not go wrong if you begin your research with "How to Dotcom."

A Unique HandbookReview Date: 2002-06-20
published in Beacon, house journal of IEEE Delhi Section, Vol.21,No.1, (June 2002)
The release of a new title by the renowned technical publishing house of Newnes / Butterworth-Heinemann is usually a noteworthy event for the technical fraternity. The title under review has come as a surprise, not only because it far exceeds the standard usually set for handbooks but also because it has achieved the unique distinction of being a reference work equally useful and valuable for industry professionals, practising engineers, consultants, technicians, students, teachers, research scholars and all others professionally interested in industrial power systems.
By virtue of their diversity, complexity and size, industrial power systems throw a formidable challenge to the electrical engineer. Standard electrical engineer's handbooks do not address the requirements of this special field completely. For the large number of day-to-day problems faced by production, operation and maintenance engineers working in industries there are few dedicated reference books to fall back upon for guidance. The ones that are available also do not cover the ground adequately. The present work is perhaps the most complete industrial power systems handbook currently available.
This is a reference for all engineers in design and application, protection and testing, production, project engineering, project implementation and maintenance. The text is structured into five parts. The essential theory of each topic is covered first, followed by industrial practice information. The idea is that detailed theory can always be gleaned from textbooks. Agrawal knows where exactly he must draw the line between theory and application engineering.
Mr. Agrawal has effectively bridged the gap between theory and practice in his book. Clear application data and guidelines, manufacturer's practices, application practices, commercially available ratings of machines, selection, operation and maintenance of equipment and plant, troubleshooting - all are covered in every conceivable detail. The material is cleverly keyed in to the recommendations of international standards organisations like ISO, IEEE, ANSI, BSI, DIN, IEC, etc.
One detailed flip-through leaves you convinced of the publisher's claim that "never before has so much ground been covered in a single volume reference source". Apart from doing yeomen's service to practising engineers, the author has done a great favour to teachers at technical institutes who have limited access to information from the Industry. Students will now not be deprived of this kind of information since teachers can always refer this excellent handbook to reply to questions raised in the classroom.
The production values of the book are excellent. Each page is lavishly illustrated with high quality drawings, graphs and photographs. The overall structuring of the book is excellent.
There is no capsule biography of the author anywhere in the book. For most readers Agrawal will remain only a name.
At the end of it all, the book emerges as a landmark achievement in its field. When you put it down, you cannot help wishing there were separate handbooks of identical character in the areas of transmission, distribution and utilization too.

I thought Coldfusion was rather difficult to learn, because the tips of the week by Macromedia were a little to quick for me. But Jeffrey Bardzell proved it is easy. In a straight-forward way you are taken by the hand to take all the basic steps for building a data-driven website.
Professor Says, "A+"Review Date: 2003-08-31
Working my way through a copy of Macromedia MX eLearning is changing all that. Wow! The book teaches how to develop interactions in Dreamweaver and Flash as well as offering several chapters on putting ColdFusion to work in eLearning. Each chapter includes a fine combination of hands-on work and explanation for why we are being asked to do what we're doing, especially at those places where some task is counter-intuitive. The book is also free of mistakes, typos and muddled language, a welcome plus when so many computer books seem to have been rushed to press without having been edited or proofed.
Bardzell's book is giving me two things: (1) hands on work with the software that introduces and reinforces learning without devolving into busywork and (2) a model for developing materials (like the book itself) that teach effectively from a distance. A+
