This book is an excellent application of formal methodologies for e-business cases. The examples are useful according to the explanations. I was expecting more emphasis on cost of IT resources or methods in order to calculate. But, the authors guide the book in the resource and performance chapters showing an approach on how to measure from regular sites not from new e-business projects which begin from nothing, without any data from logs or similar metrics. However, the estrict compliance with the methodology presented and the explanation about security provided me with a good reason to have it.

Highly recommended

I think it is the only book that deals with the e-business implementation methodocally and lays down a formal procedure. It is very well written and contains appropriate examples. It is recommendable not only for designers but also for managers.

There's not much else I can add to the string of reviews before mine, which ALL give full marks. The words in this review's title are the only that might add value.

This is one of those rare works which does not care to have one eye for the wannabe market. Suitable for both technicians & those folk needing to see the "big picture" (e.g. Managers)

Excellent performance &n capacity approach for app layer
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 24 total.
Review Date: 2002-07-20
This is one of a series of books about performance and capacity metrics by the authors. Each of their books covers a specific environment (client/server, mainframes, web services), and each explains the theory, quantitative methods and practical approaches using common tools like Microsoft Excel.

This book's focus is on performance and capacity of applications in the e-commerce infrastructure, and like the other books by the authors, it covers every facet while explaining the what's and why's. More importantly, this book will not overwhelm readers who are rusty in math because the authors weave in refresher material as they go along.

What makes this book valuable is the blend of business and technical topics, particularly in Part I where business models are thoroughly discussed. I personally believe that this material is as important as the more technically focused material in subsequent chapters because it wakes up the technical reader as to why their job of developing scalable solutions is important by linking the technical aspects to business imperatives.

Parts II (Evaluating E-Business Infrastructure and Services) and III (Capacity Planning for E-Business) are the heart of the technical matter, and the chapters systematically dissect each aspect of an e-commerce infrastructure from the application layer point of view. This is where quantitative methods are introduced and where the value of the spreadsheets on the CD ROM increase. Note that there are more up-to-date versions of these spreadsheets on the book's associated website, as well as errata for the book.

Practical considerations that blend the business and technical perspectives are presented in Part IV (Models of Specific E-Business Segments). This chapter consists of case studies that tie together all of the preceding material using real world examples.

Because this book is more focused on performance and capacity at the application and business model layer, you should read the authors' newest book, "Capacity Planning for Web Services: Metrics, Models, and Methods". That book covers the lower level details of the infrastructure
to round out the picture of an end-to-end view of performance and capacity management.

Great, but whats with the units??

Going to an engineering school, we deal strickly with SI units. For the most part the book deals with them too. But often, it seems like the problems that would be good for me to try, are in inchs and mils and lbs and all the imperical crap.

Now i only gave it 1 star less. Considering most of the engineering world laughs at imperical crap, which i dont blame them.

Besides for that, the rest of the book is pretty good. The lack of explanations could be worked on. (not in the problems, but in the information prior to the questions). I luckily took a physics on electricity before i got this. Which helped me alot, especially when dealing with OhmMeters.

I would by this book if you want to great in your EE classes. But you may want to have someone who can explain some things. Or just do some demensional analysis to figure out why things are the way they are. And resistance and others like that will make sense.

I initially picked up this book to do remediation on my first circuit analysis course, and have continued to use it through the second course. I call the Shaum Series my "secret weapon" for doing well in EE classes (and physics too, actually). The few pages of exposition at the beginning of each chapter are clear, concise, and mostly complete (Electric Circuits by Nahvi is more rigorous), and the problems, half with detailed solutions and half with just answers, are on-topic, perfectly-tailored, and numerous.

If you are taking circuit analysis courses, EE or not, you would be a fool to not have this book in your bag.

Excellent supplement on the topic of circuit analysis

Review Date: 2006-06-02
This is an excellent supplement for electrical technology and electrical engineering students taking a first course on circuit analysis. It is a particularly good companion to Boylestad's "Introductory Circuit Analysis", which is a standard circuit analysis text that has insufficient examples on several subjects. This outline starts with the analysis of DC resistive circuits, goes on to AC circuits, and also covers power circuits, transformers, and op-amps. There is a good chapter on complex numbers and phasors, an understanding of which is essential for the study of circuit analysis. There is no need of differential or integral calculus although the book uses derivatives in the chapters on capicitors, inductors, and transformers as needed for voltage-current relations. Even though there is not one integral shown in the book, the outline is still useful to engineers since circuit analysis courses mainly use only algebra.
This book also presents necessary tools such as PSPICE, the computer circuit analysis and simulation program for PC's. SPICE is the standard for analog circuit simulation across the electronics industry, and knowledge of its syntax is essential. The outline also covers the use of advanced scientific calculators in the context of solving actual problems.
Besides being a good source of examples and solved problems, this outline does a pretty good job of outlining the basic theory of circuit analysis. I highly recommend it.

A testament to this book and it's methods is that many of the latest software tools, using the latest technology, still build on the methods and diagrams used in this book. And it's all still valid. Every consultant, business analyst, and systems designer MUST have a copy of this book in their library!

The index is not useful. Very difficult if not impossible to find topics of interest.

The chapters contain a lot of material that is meaningless to the technical subject. My guess is that the book size could be cut in half to 1.5 inches thick from 3 inches.

An electronic copy of the book would be handy. I did try to access the "online version" and it seemed like I was being asked to pay for each chapter that I accessed. I gave up.

This book has been a valuable tool in both revising for 70-400 SCOM exam and maintaining my SCOM infrastructure. All levels of complexities are covered from single server deployments to huge scalable solutions.

It contains information on all areas of SCOM and general network administration, as well as helpful weblinks every few pages to internet resources on the subject. In most examples this book will walk you through the GUI for completing a task, and will cap it off nicely with a powershell cmdlet for those of you who like to streamline the power of two great products.

The only negative I've found with SCOM Unleashed is a couple grammatical errors, but I could not take a star off for this! A 5-Star book for a 5-star application. Suitable for those of you just starting with SCOM or already serious knee deep in alerts from every area of your network.

Thanks for another great book.

This is the most comprehensive OpsMgr book on the market. This book contains more real world information than the Microsoft white papers and runs circles around the Mastering Operations Manager offering.

Operations Manager Unleashed offers excellent guidance for planning your deployment including database sizing tips. In addition topics such as deployment and operations are thoroughly covered. Insight on management pack tuning, step by step guides on alerting and some of the best advice on the ACS feature are included. You will have more than enough information at your fingertips to get the most out of your OpsMgr investment. Think of this book like the Pocket Consultant series that Microsoft has for Exchange, Windows etc: it's not meant to be read cover to cover, but will provide you with advice at the right time.

In short if you have already invested thousands of dollars in System Center Operations Manager, spend the extra $40 and get the best available guide for this product. (Strange that Microsoft Press doesn't have a admin companion for OpsMgr)

A wonderful adventure!

I've only got a few things to say here and that is if your looking for a good game to buy GET THIS ONE because it is not only a good game, but a Great one!

You play the role of hero/treasure hunter Nathan Drake on a mission to find the road to El Dorado...amongst other things. Here are a few of my thoughts on this game.

CHARACTERS--Top notch voice acting, some of the best dialogue I've seen in a game in a long time...it makes the game seem more real when the characters in it seem like they could be people that you would meet at the grocery store or something.

GAMEPLAY--I am in love with the gameplay, it's a perfect blend of running, ducking, hiding, shooting and butt kicking that you will never get tired of it's many antics. Also, it's not a super Gory game that you wouldn't want your kids playing, there is blood and shooting, but for some reason it's not like what you think when you think of gore and violence...it seems somewhat like shooting ducks at the carnival...yeah your shooting ducks but it's fun. I know that sounds kind of weird but it will also keep any hardcore shooter gamer's eyes glued to the screen.

The enemies are actually smart, they won't just shoot at you in one spot. They'll fire at you, duck and when your aiming at the top of the block waiting for him to pop up to get a head shot...he'll sneak around the side and shoot you. I love it.

GRAPHICS--The best on the PS3 right now other than Metal Gear Solid 4. I came to an area in the jungle and I stopped playing and just looked out at the ocean and couldn't believe that what I was looking at was a game. I have an HD TV so that helps but I've also played this at a friends house on a 19' tube tv and it looks great there as well. The HD just does what it does for most things...adds crispness and sharpness to an already great looking picture.

FUN FACTOR-- As I said earlier, this game can be enjoyed by pretty much anyone of any age. I am a big fan of shooter games like Call of Duty 4, Battlefield, Medal of Honor and I haven't touched any of those games since buying this.

Sony also just released trophy support for this game meaning that you unlock in game trophies for special things you do...for example if you find 5 treasures you earn a trophy for that. Now when you go to your gamercard outside of the game there will be a trophy added to your overall level.

And...there are a lot and I do mean a lot of things to unlock in game, like 'making of' videos and sketch work. It definetly keeps you coming back for more.

THE BAD--The only thing I can knock on this game is that sometimes throwing grenades gets a little difficult if your in a intense fight against 15 enemies but that is more of a lack of skill probably than a knock on the game.

OVERALL--You can get this game for around $30 to $50 bucks now since it's been out for a few months and also depending where you get it.
So if you want a good investment and something you can really sink your teeth into...buy this game, you will not regret it.

Those without the budget for a commercial product will especially appreciate do-it-yourself practical code and easy to follow examples.

Review Date: 2003-12-04
This book provides practical advice and examples on integrating XML into existing business systems. The book is easy to read and follow. The approach of the book is to break the problem down into a chain of simple problems, addressing each as a data 'filter'. The end result is to connect the input/output of a legacy system with the input/output of an XML parser.

I recommend this book to anyone faced with the problem of using XML to extend the reach of existing applications.

Step-by-step, covers the details well

Review Date: 2003-12-11
Mike Rawlin's book deals with the reality that legacy business applications are not readily converted to processing XML-formatted information. While XML works fine as the interchange format, you need to convert between that interchange format and the format your applications understand. Mike covers all of the minor nuances that you need to consider, presents a wealth of knowledge in an easily-understood format, and provides examples to boot.

The most usable book I read in ages
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-22
A lot of IT people are busy making different applications running on different platforms "talk" to each other. XML was invented as the "Esperanto" of the IT world to get these systems to understand each other. In practice however it just isn't that simple, as most of these applications don't talk XML yet, until this book.

This book is a real do itbook. It does not teach you XML or XSLT but shows you how to use it. What I especially liked is that he discusses his design considerations, he wants you to understand the whys. Once he thinks you know the basics he goes back to his basic design and improves it to make it make it fully reusable and modular, making it even beter.

Mr. Rawlins gives you toolbox of utilities, with the source code, that can become the building blocks for your own application integration system.

I have not come across a book with as much usable code in my IT career. We have already redesigned quite a few of our systems because of it. If you are into connectivityyou cant be without this book.

Ps. The word Legacy in the title does not imply big mainframes.

Unpretentious and Useful

Easy to read, in a refreshing unpretentious style, Rawlins explains numerous complicated concepts associated with using XML. Especially useful are the chapters covering the conversion of EDI formatted data into and out of XML and the converting of one XML format to another XML format. The inclusion of Java and C++ considerations in appropriate chapters provides excellent practical advice.

Work for Fun: Not quite as simple as it says on the title, but definitely doable -- and a worthy goal

Review Date: 2008-10-06
I love this book. It's very inspiring, and it provides an outstanding overview of one major aspect of the internet marketing field -- from the perspective of someone who's been in it for both fun and profit for longer than the internet even officially existed.

When Alan Bechtold says "Fun," he means it. And he spends a good part of the book laying out the process of how to find the subject area that excites you that also provides you with a market interested in buying your products -- eventually.

The idea is this: if you have fun doing what you're doing, it's not really work. And if there are longish hours involved, at least initially, you may not mind all that much -- after all, it's fun and something you're passionate about. All true, of course, at least to a point.

When Bechtold says "3 simple steps," he's correct on one hand (they really aren't rocket science), yet I wonder how many people's idea of "simple step" includes "write book" or "write sales letter."

Okay, so the simple steps aren't quick steps necessarily, and getting them all done properly can take a while.

Then again, this isn't a get-rich-quick book, but one on finding a way to make a living while pursuing your passions. Not that the possibility of riches isn't also there, but the focus isn't on rich so much as on fun. Making a comfortable living is definitely part of the plan though, so he's got us covered there.

The three-step process is also not quite as tedious as it may seem at first. We're given a number of short-cuts that do make things a whole lot easier than it would seem from the "write book" step.

In fact, writing that book can be a lot less work than you'd expect, and Bechtold provides the step-by-step instructions on possible ways to do it very quickly and easily, without much writing at all.

The instructions are embedded in an ongoing storyline, where we follow 3 cubicle slaves from their J-O-B-S to liberation as they turn their hobbies and passions into incomes. It makes for entertaining reading and it also makes the potentially abstract process really come to live. Especially when it comes to Jenny and her Strawbarbie Barbie doll custom clothes, who is the primary example and whose progress is spelled out in great detail.

Can it work? A particularly inspiring aspect of the book: several profiles of people who have actually successfully achieved their work for fun lifestyles. It shows that Bechtold's system is not just theory but that it really can be done.

I find it very easy to become motivated by what I read initially. I find such great stuff that I get fired up about it and this book is no exception because it appears to be the bible to a business I can actually do well. However, do the products actually deliver what they promise? I don't think I have ever seen a review that is approached from the standpoint of the longevity of the product. How does it rate 6 months after you buy it and have used it for awhile?

I can say that some of the links in this book are outdated already and this book is hot off the press! Overture is gone, it was bought out by Yahoo so if you want keyword searches, you will be required to pay for it. Fortunately there is a free 7-day trial period you can sign up for which might just give you the time you need to make your initial searches.

It is all about figuring out what it is you are passionate about and combining it with skills you have. This books teaches you how to publish without actually having to write a book to establish yourself as an expert, publish an e-zine and give the info away for free. After you draw people in with your free information, you will be able to sell them product.

It also teaches you how to come up with a brand identity for yourself that your competition will be unable to touch and it will be difficult for them to take business away from you because of it.

So, I thought I would use part of this review to actually make updates about my process and how the book worked for me so that others can get the layman's view of this. I will adjust my rating as I go along to help you make your decision about whether this book is right for you. Maybe I've already tipped your decision one way or the other. At any rate, I hope this information will be helpful to others.

Alan Bechtold's "Will Work For Fun" is the most powerful book I've read to date when it comes to launching your very own Fun Business. When I was only half way through the book I already had a rough business plan in place that will allow me to wipe out the competition in my home town.

Will Work For Fun has revealed how easy it actually is to create a business you'll have a passion about that pays you to have fun at the same time! Thanks a ton Alan for writing this book, it is sure to change the outlook of the many people who are stuck being wage slaves.

If you're looking for a way to cash-in on the Internet Marketing boom... here's your answer.

This book lives up to all its good reviews. Guarantee yourself a better grade by using it. It is exactly what it says, a "Study Guide". Although you may pass the exam with just this book, I recommend learning the material in a lengthier manner. Either take the instructor-led courses or buy the Microsoft training kits (I bought the kits), and then read this book just before you take the exam, using it as a "Study Guide". I passed the exam by a wide margin on my first attempt.

This is a great book. I passed my Workstation test with no problems. This was not my only resource. I do like this book better than Exam Cram because it did not have a lot of filler. It was concise. Most technical authors have problems getting to the point. This book was easy to study with.

well-written, well-edited and seemingly free from the typos and horrible grammar that plague most of the other mcse material i've seen. great writing style, very easy to read, and to-the-point (i love how it concentrates on what you need to know to pass the exam).

workstation was my first exam, and i aced it. this book was one of the main reasons. i'd recommend it to anyone trying to self study for their mcse. however, i still recommend getting a few other manuals if you're going to self study. no one manual emphasizes everything evenly, and even the poorly written ones will cover things that others won't. nevertheless, don't neglect this book. it's one of the best out there.

The only book you'll ever need to pass Exam 70-73.

There is only one way to say this: This book was awesome!!! The authors target what you should know and what to watch for on the exam. The book places all its emphasis on what you need and should know, not only to pass the exam, but to administer the operating system sucessfully and with ease. I am recommending this book to my friends and colleagues. Simply stated, Accelerated MCSE study Guides are your one stop shop for success. Don't get lost in all the fancy wording the other books hit you with, read something you can read! Trust me, once you pick it up, you won't want to put it down. Once I read this book, everything made sense. I can assure you that you will never have to purchase any other books on MCSE subjects for use as test preperation guides. Real world experience and this book made it possible for me to Ace the exam.

I purchased this book solely for the ratings obtained from other readers and because I wanted a quick MCP. I must warn you: For my Networking Essentials test I used two study guides, each with sample questions at the end of each chapter and final sample tests to prepare for the real test. This method helped me pass on my first attempt with 900. For this test I tried taking the short path of cramming this study guide with all the information required to pass the test and it didn't work for me, period. I passed the test with 866 on my second attempt (the first was a 633, passing was 700), and I only passed because I reinforced in 3 days my weak spots using a borrowed Exam Prep study guide (which, by the way I found out later it had terrible reviews). It doesn't mean that this book is not worth it, on the contrary, this book is worth more than its price, but it is only a review book, you can not expect to obtain all the necessary tools for the real test with it (or any guide of this type)only. This book should be a supplement to a formal study guide or NT Administrator's book and you need to test yourself using one of those CD practice tests (like the Exam Prep or Sybex's).

Excellent areas of this book: Test taking hints (specially for scenario questions), sources of information for the test, the "cram card at the end of the book", share and NTFS permissions (excellent), policies and profiles.

Acceptable chapters: Troubleshooting, Users

Weak chapters: Installation (the test requires more detailed knowledge here), Hardware configuration, RAS (the information was there but in an disorganized fashion, I got confused), Netware, It doesn't tell you which objectives are being covered (you don't know where to read to reinforce knowledge on a particular objective area)

To all candidates: Being an MCP requires experience, total mastery of the Microsoft test objectives, a detailed study guide, practice tests and a review (cram) guide. This book is an excellent review (cram) guide only. Out of the possible five stars, one star was taken for claiming to be the only tool for passing (read the back cover of the book section here in Amazon), the other for the weak areas for the real test.

Solid understanding of wireless propagation channels is necessary to be a good wireless system designer and also a researcher. Part II of this book provides an excellent coverage of channel models and propagation mechanisms. It is a must-read material for graduate students in the wireless communications field. I also particularly studied chapter 19 on OFDM. Related concepts are very well explained.

I highly recommend this book for graduate students and researchers. It will surely be one of your favorites.

There are many reasons to recommend this excellent book. First, it is a very thorough review of important basic and new concepts in wireless communications. No matter what you are searching for, it is very likely that you will find a first answer in this textbook. While offering different levels of detail, the author has also managed to remain very accurate in the explanations, which is a rare quality among general textbooks. Finally, the list of references is really extensive for readers highly interested in very specific topics.

I bought this book because I needed to brush up my wireless skills for a project during this summer. I liked the table of contents; it seemed to include pretty much anything I would need. But when reading it in detail, I was even more impressed by the skill of the author in explaining the most tricky aspects of wireless systems, mixing verbal explanations, math, and examples. And the book is at just the right level to bridge the usual communications courses I had heard, and the really advanced research monographs and papers. To summarize, this is simply a great book - 5 stars without a doubt.

This is a very excellent textbook for both advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. It covers almost every aspects of wireless communications without losing depth. The further reading section at the end of each chapter is very usefull to readers who want to explore more on particular topics. It is a good sumary.
The book will be a good tool for those who want to get more detail understanding of emerging technology like UWB, MIMO, OFDM propagation model and wirelss standards such as GSM, WCDMA, WLAN,...

This is an excellent book that can be used both as a reference for practicing engineers and as a textbook for teaching wireless communications. The book provides the tools to understand the state-of-the-art wireless technology, theory and practice. Topics covered are wide-ranging starting with the presentation of the requirements of wireless communication systems and the technical challenges involved in communication under multipath fading conditions. The book proceeds to present a thorough description of the wireless channel. It then continues with an in-depth presentation of techniques for designing transceivers for communication over the wireless channel. In this part, the reader will find clear, detailed descriptions of technologies currently in use such as CDMA, OFDM and multiantenna systems. In the last part, the book discusses wireless standards covering both cellular and local-area networks. Review questions and exercises are collected in a separate chapter.
