THIS NOT YOUR NORMAL RUN-OF-THE-MILL COMPUTER CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION BOOKReview Date: 2005-08-08
Caloyannides begins this book by defining what computer forensics really is. Next, the author discusses effective ways for users to permanently remove from their computers data that should not fall into the wrong hands. In addition, the author describes in detail the different types of specialized forensics applications like digital watermarking. He also describes how sensitive data can be stolen from one's computer. Then, he looks at the computer privacy and anonymity. The author then delves into the practical measures for protecting sensitive information. Next, he exposes the most common ways whereby one's privacy can be compromised while online and spells out specific ways of defeating those threats to one's security and privacy. Then, he deals with individual file encryption, with regards to protecting the file while it is in transit. The author then deals with encryption of all traffic over a given channel, which aspires to protect even files that have not been individually encrypted. Also, the author is concerned with the overall security of wireless connectivity with regards to WiFi and Bluetooth. Next, he covers other computer-related threats to privacy. Then, he looks at the use of biometrics with regard to privacy versus nonrepudiation issues. Finally, he includes two separate classes of legal issues: Legal issues of interest to the user of computers with or without the Internet; and, legal issues pertaining to computer crime and legal evidence.
With the preceding in mind, the author has done an excellent job of helping the professional or business person who has the legal and ethical obligation to protect proprietary business information or intellectual property stored in a computer, which is entrusted to that person or persons from being stolen by an unscrupulous competitor or by a thief. At the end of the day, because most computers are connected to the Internet and/or network at one time or another, you and your organization have the responsibility to make sure that security and privacy are at the forefront of everyone's mindset.
Excellent book on protecting information in computers.Review Date: 2004-11-04
require expertise in the field to read it.
Finally, a practical and readable guide to computer privacy.Review Date: 2004-11-04
practical specific information on how to protect yourself from
anyone accessing your sensitive data in your computer or PDA.
It also shows which popular methods are, in fact, not effective,
and suggests ones that are effective.
Also very useful in protecting your provacy from such other
threats as GPS-enhanced cellphones, toll-gate "easy pay" transponders, and other gizmos of today's everyday life.
Worth its weight in gold. Highly recommended.

Essential Purchase For Oracle DBers Working With Spatial DataReview Date: 2008-09-02
Great work by Apress as per usual and a must buy for any Oracle admins and/or developers that need this package.

Oracle SpatialReview Date: 2008-04-22
Must a read bookReview Date: 2007-11-30
The book consists of six parts (including appendices). All the parts cover following subjects:
- Introduction to the technology. Technologies, to be exact; architectures of both, Spatial and Locator options are described -
differences between them.
- Basic concepts - basic know-how. The part, I needed the most met my expectations in 100%. It helped me to start coding really fast.
- Network analysis - more advanced subjects covered, the mostly ARE NOT available in Locator option (one I have access to); network analysis and routing engine, geometry engine. Also indexes and operators are described in one chapter of the book.
- Map Visualisation and creation - a lot of knowlege about MapBuilder, MapViewer and it's API - really helpful for anybody, who needs to visualize maps stored in Spatial.
- Sample applications and case studies - I always look for such chapter in every IT book I read. This is the place, where programmer might find a lot of answers to one's questions. There is also a chapter in this part, the belongs to the category "MUST read" - "Tips, common mistakes and common errors".
There is also sample code available for the readers - to be downloaded from the publisher's web page. It is really helpful to have it while reading the book. There is only one "but" - was, to be exact. About two weeks after the book had been published, the code wasn't available on the page. At least, I couldn't find it. Now it is possible to download it from here.
The book is really good - "must have" of every Oracle Spatial user. It might be helpful for the beginner and advanced developers as well. I would recommend it to everyone, who needs to get to know Oracle Spatial well. All the 756 pages (excluding index) are filled with reliable knowledge, especially that one of the authors - Ravi Kothuri is a member of Oralce spatial development team, where he works as software architect and team leader.

good Intro to Quantum ComputingReview Date: 2003-06-08
It also has some helpful appendices for beginners in the end.
Quantum Algorithms are covered fairly well, but as the author himself acknowledges, Qm. Info. theory, Qm. Communication, Qm. error Correcting, Qm. Crypto. etc are not covered.
On the whole, a good read. Highly recommended.

Great For PHP Developers!Review Date: 2008-05-20
Rails is one of the newest "hot" technologies in the marketplace and it's due to ease of use and rapid deployment. PHP has been a web technology long popular for dynamic content. If you are an existing PHP developer that is looking to add Rails support to your web app, this is a great resource to have by your side. Content is good, and the "all bells no whistles" design serves well for the reader.
Easy to recommend, great to learn from.

*The* Rails book to get if you're a PHP developerReview Date: 2008-05-15
The author is clearly an expert PHP programmer, and while you will certainly come away with an appreciation for the elegance and parsimony of Ruby the programming language and Rails the web application framework, the book is by no means "down on PHP." Indeed, I learned a couple of PHP tricks, that let me do a few (simple) Rails-like patterns in PHP.
In all, this is a terrific book, and if you're a PHP developer interested in learning about Rails, this book is *the* way to do it.

very helpful book in getting more out of SSIS 2005Review Date: 2008-04-05
immensely useful, a gemReview Date: 2008-04-06
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Integration Services (SSIS) is a tool for developing and running data integration tasks, such as reading from files, transforming data, and loading data into databases, including, but not limited to, Microsoft SQL Server. It is an "ETL" (extract, transform, load) product, very powerful but easy to get lost in the product's documentation and whitepapers trying to figure out how to accomplish a given real-world task. Farmer's little book is a gem because it is short and it makes an effort to help a developer with real-world data integration tasks. This book's main theme is using the scripting facilities, but it does a good job giving a perspective. Donald Farmer is the SSIS program manager at Microsoft, and besides technical knowledge, he has the skills to educate. I have always felt that there are lots of great software products available, but that developers trying to solve problems have a hard time getting past the product demos and slides. This book, in the tradition of K&R's "The C Programming Language" helps developers take that step. In contrast, books that describe step-by-step procedures that are already described in the product documentation are not nearly as useful.
While SSIS has lots of toolboxes to do standard ETL tasks, scripting tasks are meant to add facilities that are awkward or impossible to do with standard designs. Scripting has access to the NET Framework and user-developed NET assemblies. Farmer's examples are helpful and inspiring. I hope he will write more books like this, but at the same time I like to see him, as product manager, take some annoyances and weaknesses out of the otherwise great SSIS product. Those who like to watch instructional videos will enjoy his presentations on MSDN TV.
Powerful and conciseReview Date: 2007-06-29
One of the best things about the book is that it is only around 200 pages. This book won't put you to sleep with the history of relational databases and ETL or trying to teach you Visual Basic.net. You will appreciate that if you are an experienced database and .net developer. [...]
The author helped to develop the product and is thoroughly knowledgeable about the subject. He is active in the Integration Services support forums.
There are some typos but they are easy to spot and do not cloud the information. I highly recommend this book.

Gutsy and Honest approach to Process Improvement!Review Date: 2004-04-20
Unexpected gem - read before leaping!Review Date: 2004-03-22
Here's what to expect from this book, and why you should read it cover-to-cover before embarking on a CMMI implementation or other process improvement initiative. How to spot and avoid common pitfalls such as:
- focusing on the process instead of the benefits, which of course, can be counterproductive when the process itself is applied blindly and without regard for real efficiency.
- avoiding the 'when all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail' effect; i.e., attempting to apply the CMMI to everything
- mis-diagnosing problems with the process and applying the wrong solution; for example, scope creep in a project causes a reaction that often results in claims that the requirements management process is broken when the real problem is a lack of discipline or standards (not the same as a process)
Besides showing what does not work, and forcing you to look at your real goals before embarking on a CMMI implementation or process improvement initiative, the author leads you through a realistic appraisal of your goals and objectives, and shows you how to accomplish them. He is a strong proponent of using a systems view, and shows how to apply systems thinking principles to achieving your goals and objectives. This is the real value of this book, and why it's a sanity check for any organization that is about to embark on any improvement initiative.
Of course, if you are going to implement the CMMI, in whole or relevant parts to improve your capability, this book provides a clear roadmap for doing just that. Do not let my previous remarks lead you to believe that this book is anti-CMMI because it's not. It's merely anti-unrealism.
Regardless of your end goals, much of the material in this book applies to any activity, from strategic planning to process improvement to embracing a methodology. It's one of the best books I've read, and one that anyone contemplating CMMI should read before they read anything else about that model.

Detailed, but....Review Date: 2004-11-05
This book will take you from beginner (but not novice) to advanced intermediate. It won't take you to expert; but then expert comes with experience. Given that each prepress environment has its own peculiarities, you'll have to work within your system to take it to its limits. This book can help some of the way.
My only complaint is related to my personal situation. On occasions, concerning some particularly fine points, the book suggests "ask your prepress partner". I am trying to become that prepress person, so I found this frustrating. Understandable, but frustrating.
I Concur... This book has a wealth of useful informationReview Date: 2003-09-20
This book not only covers the general abilities of Acrobat, it discuses little known intricacies and technical issues that will make you a power user in record time.
Remarkably, the information is explained in simple, ordinary language.
Just Buy It... You Won't be SorryReview Date: 2003-02-23
The best thing about the book is that it breaks down PDF creation by program. For example, if you use Quark Xpress there is a chapter dedicated on how to use Acrobat with Quark. If you use Microsoft Word there is another chapter on using Acrobat with it. These chapters present you with real world scenarios and how to deal with them.
This is not some kind of quick start guide. It does get in to some detail and that helped me a great deal. It doesn't just gloss-over a subject or give you bare-bones steps on how to do something.
This is an easy to understand book that will help out anbody at any level with using Acrobat. I can't say enough good things about it. This is the first book I have purchased in the "Real World" series of books... it won't be my last!
