Managing Expectations is a book for everyone who deals with customers or other people with expectations. Using a customer service model, Ms. Karten describes the ways in which people successfully and unsuccessfully manage what people expect. She advises on how to create better working relationships by fostering clearer understandings of the circumstances and limitations which exist in any situation.

Failure to manage expectations often has catestrophic consequences to projects and relationships. Those who want to build long-term relationships and successful projects will consider the cautions and advice presented here.

Ms. Karten uses gentle humor and warmth to tell us the lessons that we need in order to better communicate what we know to our clients.

People who are clients can also use this book to better understand the process of working collaboratively.

It's a fine book for evoking new insights and inspiring better communication.

Learn how to communicate the good and the bad news

The key message of this book is that you must listen carefully to your customers and co-workers, hearing every word, but also the broad message. Many of the primary problems in the business-customer relationship are due to different definitions of commonly understood words, such as "regular", "extended", "timely" and even "month." Whole phrases are subject to different interpretations, and the author recites an instance from a trip to her physician. After examination, the physician pronounced her condition as "unremarkable." At first she was angry, and yet having the sense to think before making a fist, she realized that was the doctor's way of saying she was fine.
Which also points out what is the most critical condition for success dealing with anyone, whether they are in the group described by the book title or not. As e-mail use has shown us, it is almost impossible to avoid saying something that can be taken in an offensive manner. Business is about getting things done, and you don't complete complex tasks by making small talk about the weather. You do things by communicating the current situation as it is, even if it is not what the receiver wants to hear and it is necessary to take people to task. Therefore, your best policy is to avoid getting angry quickly, developing a thick skin and concentrating on completing the tasks at hand.
Naomi Karten puts forward advice that is simply not heard often enough. Forget about all of the sensitivity nonsense and concentrate on forms of communication that can be used to explain frustrations, demands, concerns, and all of the other things that go wrong between people trying to work together. Understand that ambiguity is the natural state of affairs, so look for the real meanings rather than the individual words. Whenever you hear something, put your feelings aside for a short time until you clearly understand what the message really was.
The phrase "People who want more, better, faster, sooner, NOW!" is just a long way of describing "customers", so anyone in business must be prepared to deal with such people. In this book, you will learn how to approach customers with your feelings placed in the background and all of your information receivers on high-band. With business growing more competitive every day, this may be the only way to remain a viable economic entity.

Customers are ignorant fools... or is it us ?

This book is an essential read for anyone wishing to improve his relationship with clients. However, it also applies to teamwork and employee-manager relationships (even husband-wife relationships). Everybody has expectations and you shall not assume what their expectations because there are big chances that you are wrong.
In this book, you will find how to communicate better, listen better, be skeptic and establish policies and pratices that should make your life easier. All of this discussed with her life's experiences.
Most of the advices will appear as common sense, but it really takes a book to realize what common sense is.

A useful guide to create good understandings with others.

Of the numerous books regarding the recent online learning movement that I have read, this book provided me with the most useful, applicable insights. I enjoyed the author's perceptive knowledge sharing. The resources provided in the book are definitely worth the price of the book. This author illustrates both the advantages and disadvantages of the unique contributions that technology can make in this evolving and exciting realm of online learning.

Tony Bates writes an immensely practical guide for coping with changing technological needs and developing a rational and strategic process for making sound decisions. As a manager in a university department, I appreciated a resource that focused on the academic environment. In addition, I think the issues he raises and the process he proposes have relevance for other educational institutions and training facilities, especially those in the public or non-profit sector which tend to be financially conservative by nature. Bates offers best practices and expert advice on factors to address when confronting technological change, especially as it relates to teaching. As he points out, technology is a means to an end, so in order to best manage technology one must be aware of the inevitable impact technology has in society and, consequently, position the institution within changing markets and needs. Major investments in technological infrastructure must be paired with a corresponding vision of the organization. This book is about the art of managing cultural change as much as it is about incorporating new tools, taking into account the human factors and the hazards implicit therein.

The format of the book is also helpful. It begins with an executive summary, provides concluding summaries at the end of each chapter, provides a balanced perspective on the pros/cons to choices that the institution must make, and presents real-world case studies to give a flavor of principles in action. I highly recommend this reading for anyone in an administrative or teaching capacity who finds himself or herself faced with the difficult choices inherent in a technology transformation. The only thing that would have increased the value of the book for me is a deeper discussion and emphasis on the role of the library or technology center within this transformation.

This book is highly recommended. A regret is that I should have read it sooner. There are intricate details about the transfer of risks from buyer to supplier that would have been invaluable in our project.

Dr Tho's book contains compelling propositions that address many anxieties in managing risks in the ITO exercise. The risk management methods proposed for the supplier as well as the buyer of outsourcing services is new (and I am a practitioner is this area for over a decade). We have used the method he proposes in our current outsourcing project with tremendous success and response. Highly recommended reading and a must before starting a IT outsourcing endeavour!

Dr Ian Tho has expounded both the basics of ITO as well as risk management very well in this book. The concept of the risk dimension signature he refers to has certainly added significant value to our ITO endeavour with our suppliers. The fundamental concepts he refers to are invaluable. Some of the theory he mentions are controversial but have also served to extend our ideas. This has been a real help!!

I want to recommend this book to anyone who is attempting to work an on IT Outsouricng exercise. The examples given are a little complex but it is worth every minute spent to understand. The Risk Dimension Signature the author proposes is exactly what we needed. The writing style could, however, be clearer.

I do research in machining at the University of New Hampshire. This book is the essential resource that all of my graduate students refer to on a regular basis. I recommend it for anyone doing research in the machining field. I would also recommend Tlusty's book, "Manufacturing Processes and Equipment" as a second essential resource.

Due to my job I am forced to read a lot of technical literature. I never got as much technical up-to-date information explained in such an intelligible way. Compared to other books dealing with manufacturing processes (which are mostly written by scientists in a very, very scientific way), in this book you've got the impression that the author virtually tells you the modern fundamentals of manufacturing. This makes this book easily understandable. Nowadays, High Speed Machining is well established in manufacturing. The future will bring High Performance Machining which means that the metal removal rates are significantly higher at high cutting speeds. As far as High Performance Cutting is concerned, this book covers also the theories of the dynamic behaviour of the cutting process. Therefore, chatter is of great importance. The author explains the two present "Chatter Theories" in detail and enables the reader to perform his own calculations on process stability. I strongly recommend this book to all engineers and students of mechanical engineering who want to know the latest scientific results explained in a comprehensible way. This book is a must in the bookcase.

I had the great fortune of taking a course with Dr. Altintas at the University of British Columbia and I have to say that he is very thorough in his teaching methodology.

This was the textbook for the course and we covered most of it... I have to say that the book is very thorough and really teaches you in a practical way. The contents are very up-to-date and full with his own research results (which are cutting-edge). Also, the book's price has been kept very reasonable so that it is "student friendly".

The perfect C64 reference

Review Date: 2008-09-22
This book is the most complete and perfect reference for those who want to know what the chips in their C64 are capable of.

If you want to learn machine language, look for something else. But if you've always wanted to know how those special effects are made, or how that cool music is churned out, or what you need to know to communicate with the outside world, or all those other dark and esotheric things you have always wanted to do with your C64 but didn't know how, get this book!

It is nothing more than a long list of memory locations and their uses. Some locations have a single line of information, others have several pages of high-value information and examples. For example: it tells you all about you need to know about handling the Raster Compare Interrupt, used for many graphical effects that have puzzled this reader for years. Everything I wanted to know, neatly organised under a few memory locations.

Basically, this is my C64 Bible. All you need is a book on machine language and you can be the master of your C64. Even if it is 20+ years after it came out :)

A must have for C64 programmers

Most other books fail to deliver the specifics in one regard or another - if you're interested in the guts of the '64, this should be in your bookshelf.

Mark Carlotto's book is a must-buy. Every page is a discovery in itself; the author makes his case, and makes it extremely well: Mars is probably home to non-natural features well within our technological ability to investigate (preferably through manned exploration).

"The Martian Enigmas" is a satisfying piece of popular science that effectively sounds the death toll for "skeptics" who insist it's all our imaginations.

this book is just what I was looking for, when implementing some reporting functionality to our web app. The owc11 charting engine is powerful and flexible, and gives the developer a lot of control for customization. This book was very helpful, especially considering that there are not very many resources on the web on this topic.
I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to develop their own charting and spreadsheet controls. The book is a nice starting point with a clear explanation and lots of code touching up on a lot of the owc functionality.

Review Date: 2005-05-14
The Microsoft Office Web Components Black Book with .Net grew out of a desperate need for documentation on the Office Web Components. The Office Web components are fine pieces of software well suited for harvesting Microsoft Office functionality in web and windows applications. However, many developers are often frustrated by the lack of resources available. This book aims to address this need and is crafted primarily as a programming resource so the material is technical in nature but there are 2 chapters that discuss licensing and usage in non-technical terms. These chapters allow decision makers to quickly determine whether or not the components are suited to their need. For the developers, the book explores every angle of development for commercial applications. There is an abundance of code examples to help explain the concepts. But, the Black Book also discusses and implements wider strategies for using the components in Enterprise Software.

It is great for someone who is just learning about cabling. However, there were quite a few typos (there's a newspaper editor for you!), and some of the drawings were too small. In all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

This is the long awaited sequel to Mike Gorman's other book, Mike's Basic Guide to Cabling Computers and Telephones. Although a great companion edition to the author's other book, this book stands on its own.

Broken down into seven chapters that are logical, easy to read, and instructive, this book will teach you how to cable your home or apartment. It starts off with planning and site inspection for cabling your home or apartment. Every home or apartment is different, so you will need to know the basics and some interesting features on the place you will cable.

The book moves on to the tools you will need, including detailed illustrations to show you what it is even if you never heard about it before. Next are the details on how to connect the wires to punchdown blocks and patch panels. After that is instructions on how to connect the wires to connectors for cable TV, telephone, and network.

Now if you have any problems with your installation, or want to troubleshoot your current wiring, the books explains in detail some great techniques to shoot troubles.

Finally the book discusses some difficult installation problems that you may encounter and how to overcome them. Specifically, what if your house is all brick? How about sheetrock walls and ceilings? Or are you lucky enough to have a raised ceiling with ceiling tiles? No matter your situation, you will come out ahead with this book.

If you are a homeowner, apartment renter or landlord, a homebuilder or construction foreman, or even just a real estate agent, this is THE BOOK for you. Last Sunday I wired a duplex home for a 100 Mbit network. It included 5 rooms over 2 floors and it took only 4 hours! Without the techniques used from this book it would have taken three times as long.

Very clear, some editorial work needed

This is the first cabling book I've ever purchased, and I'm very happy with it. It's made clear a lot of things that the phone techs are doing at work while I'm just staring blankly at rows of punchdown blocks. Now it makes some sense!

This book has excellent diagrams and it presents information at a very basic and understandable level. It covers the very basics (what is a network interface device? what tools should I have?) all the way through suggestions for keeping your newly installed cables safe and neatly bundled. That said, there are some things that could use some work:

1) Some (really not very many) of the diagrams are a bit too small to read easily. They can be read, but it sometimes involves a bit of squinting (or I suppose I could use a sheet magnifier, but I'd rather resist that sign of aging).

2) There are occassional references to chapters and topics that don't seem to exist (e.g., reference to a discussion of terminating DB25 or DB9 connectors in chapter 9 -- there are only 7 chapters!)

3) There are some sentence fragments, typos, and other minor editorial matters, but they're generally nothing worse than mildly irritating. As a beginner, I can't really say whether they've changed the meaning of anything important.

As others have mentioned, this book can stand alone, but I think it's really at its finest as a complement to Mike's Basic Guide to Cabling Computers and Telephones (which I've since purchased; that one talks about terminating DB25 and DB9 connectors).

All-in-all, a really excellent book. Very basic, direct, and well-priced.

Outstanding book for the do-it-yourself wire installer

The book is very concise and clean. I am moderately familiar with installing phone and computer network cable so it only took me 45 minutes to read the whole book. Don't let the small size confuse you though... It's easy enough for a novice to read, but a veteran who looked at your cable installation would be impressed by your work.

It has a lot of very good illustrations that take you through the most popular types of networking equipment and tools. The knowledge could easily be applied to wiring your own home, apartment or small office. It also mentions some of the techniques used for very large phone systems supporting hundreds of stations, but the most applicable writing to me is about how to take care of wire in homes, apartments and smaller to mid-sized offices. Someone who wires large companies is probably being trained through a different set of reading material... It is VERY obvious that the writter is speaking from years of cable installation experience.

It would be difficult for me to believe that anyone running cable, even a single phone line to a handful of stations in a home, wouldn't find at LEAST the cost worth of value in the book.

Though not perfect, it is still the best book around on wireless networks. It was chosen as the course book for mobile and wireless networks course during my graduation. I liked it very much and enjoyed reading it. It is written in a simple and easy to follow style, avoiding unnecessary text and explanations. It covers a wide range of topics in wireless networks, e.g., MAC for wireless, telecom networks, WLANs, mobile network layer (Mobile IP and etc), mobile transport layer, and satellite and broadcast systems, along with an introductory chapter on wireless transmission fundamentals. However it is SERIOUSLY missing IEEE 802.16 WiMAX.
I have consulted a few other books in this area. In particular, I found it better than William Stallings's Wireless Communications & Networks.

When you pick this book up, it looks completely boring! Neither the title nor the cover is enticing. However the content is excellent - it has a thorough coverage of all kinds of current and upcoming wireless technologies. Not many books today mention anything about technologies such as bluetooth, however this one has a couple of pages coverage. If you're looking to get an overview of what is happening in wireless, this is a good place to start. I would definitely recommend picking up a copy of this book - I was very happy to have bought it.

An extremely informative book

This book offers an excellent introduction and exciting insights on latest mobile technologies; from wireless transmission, telecommunication systems, satellites to wireless LAN/ATM, mobile network/transport protocols and the WAP development. The contents are not only well-organized and balanced, but also easy to understand and interesting.

I have read a few books on the overall subject, and this is by far the best-written book. I recommend this book very highly to IT engineers, managers and others who are interested in learning how the latest mobile technology works and how it is becoming the next-wave for the Internet and Web phenomenon.

Very interesting

Very good book that explains current research and technologies covering especially OSI/ISO layers 1 to 4 in mobile/wireless communications. WAP is also discussed. Managers, some developpers may find the first 10 chapters too detailed as the book goes far (up to single bit description in packet headers) in protocols explanations.

This book is ideal for communication systems and telecom engineers and give an excellent up-to-date idea of the mobile/wireless communications field for others.
