This book has already proven to be extremely helpful in making appropriate plant selections for existing conditions in the
landscape. I highly recommend it for anyone who finds themselves choosing which plants to purchase for a yard or gardens.

I loved this book. The pictures are adorable, it inspires great ideas, and it gives great information about bonsai trees.
Its kind of informal and is more fun than function, so buy this book it for into bonsai but not extremely serious about it.

This is the only book you will ever need for pruning fruit trees. Once again, the RHS outdoes itself (as usual) and the many
beautiful photographs and drawings inside the book, along with the hows and whys of each individual fruit's needs are brilliantly
written about here. I think I made another wise career investment, as well as having picked an interesting book from a horticulturist's
viewpoint. Highly recommended are the articles on training soft fruits, creating espaliers and fans; and in general, creating
a successful fruit garden no matter how large or small.

It's an excellent first discovery book. It tells you a lot about the Amazon Rain forest and the river basin.
This book shows children the rain forest plants and animals and things destroying this area today. It has many colourful pictures, some on transparent flip pages. From lazy lizards to beautiful birds, from chattering capuchins to wet water lily, this book shows some of the rarest species living in the rain forest.
This book would be excellent for children under the age of eleven.

When I learn about the things around me, forever after that they look more interesting to me. This book taught me a great
deal about trees and led me to learn more on my own afterwards. Stop and smell the roses, AND stop and appreciate the trees!
This book enabled me to do that more than before.

How to think about -- and thus practice -- growing roses

An outstanding new reference for rose growers because Harkness, a member of the highly regarded rose growing family in England,
helps us understand how great, easy-to-grow roses distinguish themselves from their more troublesome, but still lovely, fellow-travelers.
Only 75 roses made the cut for this book, which is not a very wide scope. This narrows considerably for gardeners like me who contend with truly frigid winters and shorter growing seasons. But the depth! Each rose receives the full Harkness treatment for flower properties (color; shape and size; scent; production), plant properties (shape and size; position; hardiness), foliage properties (color; health check; garden uses), a rating in each overall area of flower properties, plant properties, and foliage properties, and an overall assessment and rating. Harkness provides a framework and 75 examples of how to evaluate a rose, which is tremendously useful for those of us who have space to grow only a few beauties. The detailed directory of roses combined with sensible and lucid explanations of rose-growing make the book ideal for beginners or rose-phobics.
Some haughty rosarians might consider themselves beyond the information presented here. More's the pity for them because the photographs -- all full color and many full page -- are remarkable for their clarity, detail, and loveliness. I hope I am never sufficiently expert at rose growing to pass up such a beautiful book.

This volume presents the most comprehensive summery to date of the effects of air pollution on coniferous forests of the western
US. While highlighting research conducted between 1986 and 1990 by the Western Coniferous Research Cooperative, the authors
also synthesize an extensive review of the literature on the effects of ozone, acid rain, and other pollutants on Western
forests.
The book has background chapters on Western forest types, climate, patterns of air pollution, soil sensitivity to acid rain, and methods for assessing the impact of air polution on forests.
The second part describes five regional studies of forest growth and condition in the West. The book closes with a look at the future of Western forests including possible interactions between air pollution and stresses such as climate change, increased UV radiation, and forest management.
This book is of interest to ecologists, foresters, resource managers, and environmental policy makers.
